Customer Reviews:
Dinah does it right.......2007-06-08
This CD by Dinah Washington has some great tunes on it...the title Relax Max just makes you want to smile and is actually very timely in that a major hotel chain is currently featuring it in there TV ads! Really nice CD -- Dinah left us way to soon !!
She Swings and Sings.......2007-06-08
This is an excellent album with Dinah backed by Quincy Jones and his Orchestra. Some of the highlights include "They Didn't Believe Me," Makin' Whooppee," and "Relax Max". But you will enjoy each and every tune on the album. Dinah has a voice that captivates from to start to finish. And when she's done singing, you wish she'd sing some more!
A superb performance with an incredible band to back it up!.......2007-05-22
I stipulate to all the other comments already made in previous reviews... but since I didn't see this information on this page... thought I'd pass it along. Dinah's performance is indeed incredible... not a bad song on the entire CD... but the orchestra (big band) that backs her up is also incredible... and is it any wonder... with Quincy Jones (conductor); Hal McKusick (alto saxophone, flute); Anthony Ortega (alto saxophone); Jerome Richardson, Lucky Thompson (tenor saxophone); Danny Bank (baritone saxophone); Don Elliott (trumpet, mellophone, vibraphone, xylophone, bongo); Bernie Glow, Jimmy Maxwell, Ernie Royal, Doc Severinsen, Charlie Shavers, Clark Terry, Nick Travis, Joe Wilder (trumpet); Jimmy Cleveland, Urbie Green, Quentin Jackson (trombone); Tommy Mitchell (bass trombone); Clarence "Sleepy" Anderson (piano); Barry Galbraith (guitar); Milt Hinton (bass); Jimmy Crawford, Osie Johnson (drums). This was recorded in 1956 with 23-year-old Quincy Jones arranging. Nothin' like the sound of a real BIG BAND and a singer who's got the pipes to compete with all the horns... fantastic...
swingin Miss D.......2007-05-13
This is a very good CD and and the hotel chain TV ad introduced me to Miss Washington.
Foot tapping, beautiful Quincy and Dinah, FUN!.......2007-05-09
I am listening as I write, will try to get through the whole album before I finish this review. The sound on this album is very rich for an old, restored album...amazing, really; the sound is as good as a newly produced album. It has 18 songs on it; the original only had 12. Has anyone seen the Doubletree ad with the wonderful graphics...and Dinah singing "Relax Max". Well, that's what got me onto this album, and it was not a mistake...this album is truly a winner. Lots of foot-tapping joy, with some nice ballads to calm you along the way. I'm so glad my mother wasn't a fan of Quincy and Dinah, so I can enjoy this as new, with no offending memories attached. I will not name a song that is better than any other...they are ALL good. Well, on second thought, "i'll drown in my tears" is a very old fashioned bluesy song, so great! "you let my love grow cold" is very swingy, irresistable. I must stop my review at this point, but this album is a winner. The songs on it are ALL winners. The best of the best of this genre.

Customer Reviews:
LOVE IT!.......2007-05-13
Love this kind of music - can't get enough - have most all of the CDs. Excellent New Jersey-based company with excellent foresight and retro-understanding for the best party and jazz combos. Excellent choice for any kind of day or evening, party or relaxation time.
I love the Ultra-Lounge series........2006-12-10
The sound quality of the Ultra-Lounge series is excellent, even though the songs were recorded mostly in the 50's and 60's. Capitol Records packs each CD with carefully chosen tracks consistent with the theme of the particular volume in the series. Many of the selections that appear here aren't available elsewhere, either because the original album on which the song appeared is out of print, or because the song was issued as a single and never collected in an album. A few 'previously unreleased' tracks also appear here. This series is a wonderful introduction to the music of a by-gone era, and each album includes detailed notes on each track (artist, writers, date recorded, how released, etc.). I heartily recommend it to anyone who has an interest in this type of music.
Great lounge/cocktail sampler.......2005-10-12
The UltraLounge series definately covers the genre throughly, and this one is about the best in the series. Not every song is well-known, but most are very very enjoyable. This is a good place to start if you are introducing yourself to the genre. I thought Bobby Darin's More was the most lush and enjoyable of the tunes. You'll get a chuckle out of Prima's Closer to the Bone, a song not found on the usual Prima samplers. You certainly get a "you are in old Vegas" feel off of these tunes! Check out their UltraLounge website for a good look at the full series. Definately recommended.
Grab a Gin and Tonic, sit in a booth in the back, and enjoy the show........2005-09-29
This is one of my favorite Ultra Lounge discs, as it combines many of the great live acts of the 50s/60s. If you close your eyes while listening to it, you may think you're sitting in the Copa room of the Sands in Las Vegas. A little Louis Prima, some Dean and some Bobby Darin make the night just right.
Great.......2004-07-13
We love this type of music in our house, and this is a wonderful collection of fun, snappy music to entertain your guests in style.
I highly recommend it!

The back of this two-CD set may say "File under Lounge," but frankly, lounging will be the very last thing on your mind once you put Louis and Keely on. It's simply impossible to stand still while the duo, backed by Sam Butera and the Witnesses, gets going. When Keely sings "Hey boy, I can really cook," there's a tiny chance she's talking about something that takes place in the kitchen, but the galloping bass line behind her says that she really belongs to the dance floor. Whoo-hee! Cole Porter's "Just One of Those Things" is taken at a frenetic pace--do these people ever pause to breathe? The bulk of this collection was recorded between 1957 and 1962, and it makes for an explosive document of a now-gone era when men in sharp suits hung out at the Copa, babes with pointy rocket-launcher breasts at their arms. The sheer effortlessness of it all is still supremely exciting. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

fun swing.......2005-02-12
i just started to appreciate louis prima's band-this remastered double cd offers an excellent listening experience.
Jump, Jive, An' Wail!.......2004-06-17
Songs from Louis Prima and Keely Smith with Sam Butera and the Witnesses. Songs are great. Compilation includes songs from "The Wildest", "The Call of the Wildest" and "The Wildest Show at Tahoe".
Fast, funny, and worth every penny!.......2002-09-09
I was skeptical about buying a compilation CD set for fear it wouldn't be good... but I was wrong! I can't get enough of these CD's. I do Swing dance and Lindy Hop, and I think some of the tempos to these songs are a bit fast for dancing, but excellent for listening to when you just want to be in a good mood! Keely has a great voice, and Louis is just plane hysterical :D
A trip to the Moon on nuclear wings!.......2001-12-08
What a blast!
This was my first introduction to Mr. Prima & Co. What a swingin' treat!
You can tell from each and every cut on this twin CD set that these guys were having fun. Many of the songs have little ad-libs between Louis, Keely Smith, Sam Butera, and the other band members. Louis jumps in between solos to throw out comments, he'll scat, even proto-rap, and is having such a good time he'll try to keep from laughing while he and Sam duel with brass. Only true professional musicians can get away with that sort of thing and make it sound good. Louis & Co. are top-notch pros.
Keely solos on a few cuts to round things out, and basically, you get the feeling of what it must have been like to be kickin' it in Vegas back in the swank era while taking in Louis Prima's act. Maybe tomorrow night, you'll catch Dino at the Sands, and take in Torme on Tuesday. Or, maybe you'll just keep coming back here to see Louis, Keely, Sam, and the Witnesses again and again.
Many of the songs are just plain fun ("Robin Hood/Oh Babe", "Banana Split For My Baby", "Felicia No Capicia", "Greenback Dollar Bill", "There'll Be No Next Time"), and even the old standards take on a wink and a smile when Louis gets ahold of them ("The Music Goes 'Round And Around", "That Old Black Magic", "Just One of Those Things", "Embraceable You")!
Get yourself a martini, sit back and relax, and get ready to be swung back to swanksville. This set is one swingin' good time, whether you're six or sixty!
Fun with the swing masters.......2000-11-09
Louis Prima and Keely Smith with Sam Butera and the Witnesses constitute probably the single greatest influence on today's swing scene. I am not exaggerating. And this double-CD is a great place to start: Over two hours of remastered music, a great production design (neo-retro), and long liner notes. My only problem with the presentation is that the individual musician credits are left out. A must for all swing dancers and jazz musicians! ///// KOBY.

LOVE ULTRA-LOUNGE!.......2007-05-13
Love this kind of music - can't get enough - have most all of the CDs. Excellent New Jersey-based company with excellent foresight and retro-understanding for the best party and jazz combos. Excellent choice for any kind of day or evening, party or relaxation time.
Great Compilation!.......2007-03-20
I would recommend this CD as well as the original "Wild Cool & Swingin'".
You'll like them both!
Wild, Cool & Swingin' Too is #1 in my book.......2006-10-10
Don't get me wrong - I've got most of the Ultra-Lounge discs and I love them all - but this one is the best. Each disc focuses on a facet of Lounge music (Bossa Nova, Mambo, Exotica). Most of these are a kick in a "They sure did some crazy music" way, but the two Wild Cool discs focus on the more popular acts of the era.
The disc is hopping starting off with Eydie Gorme in a blistering read of the latin classic "Frenesi". Steve Lawrence follows with a barnstorming take on "Night and Day". I can't even listen to Sinatra's version without falling asleep now. The pace doesn't let up with Bobby Darin's phenomental "Charade" and Nancy Wlson's "A Lot of Livin' To Do".
Dinah Washington contributes the hot jazz classic "Is You Is Or Is You Ain't My Baby" (a.k.a. the song from the Tom & Jerry classic) and the sultry "Destination Moon". Tony Bennet does "Plenty of Money and You" which was featured on the Swingers soundtrack. Mel Torme sings the cheeky and hilarious "Midnight Swinger".
Other standout tracks include everything. No seriously, there isn't a bad track on the disc with one outstanding cut after another. If you want some classic lounge tracks, you've found them. I think this is better than Wild, Cool & Swingin', but it's great, too, so why not buy both of them?
Perfect for the midnight swinger in all of us!.......2006-07-26
This CD is chock full of great songs performed by some of the greatest talents of the 20th century. There is a total of twenty-one (yes, twenty-one) tracks on this CD making it both a lot of fun and a great value. It's also excellent for lounge music lovers and fans of classic pop vocals.
The CD starts off with Eydie Gorme doing a smash "Frenesi." The song is beautifully arranged and Eydie's voice is in excellent form. Her other half, Steve Lawrence, follows up quickly with the beautiful "Night And Day." Awesome!
The songs on this CD are all wonderfully musically arranged and the quality of the sound is excellent. No excess noise here! Bob Norberg at Capitol Recording Studios did an excellent job of digitally remastering these tracks.
I loved Nancy Wilson's electric version of "A Lot Of Livin' To Do;" and Peggy Lee does some hot job of "The Boy From Ipanema." Bobby Darin fans will delight that two of his songs are on this CD: "Charade" and "Call Me Irresponsible." Dinah Washington fans get an equally nice treat; Dinah sings both "Is You Is Or Is You Ain't My Baby" and "Destination Moon" on this album.
Wayne Newton does a particularly good job with "Strangers In The Night" and I also liked the style with which Louis Prima delivers "5 Months, 2 Weeks, 2 Days." One playful number that I really enjoyed was the medley of "Just A Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody" by Louis Prima. A chorus accompanies Louis on this number and the result is thrilling!
The liner notes are very, very good. You get song credits and the dates the songs were recorded by the artists. There's an extensive essay by R. J. Smith--and there are even two drink recipes: one for a "blue blazer" and the other for a "millionaire." Not bad, not bad.
I highly recommend this CD for fans of classic pop vocals, lounge music, and the great vocalists of the 20th century such as Tony Bennett, Dinah Washington, Louis Prima, Dean Martin and Bobby Darin. All these performers and many more can be found attacking their songs with all their might here on this CD! Get this CD, turn down the lights and enjoy your favorite drink--and maybe enjoy a little romance while you do!

Doc Severinsen Can Do A Lot More Than Blues.......2001-02-03
If there ever was an album worth giving a cookie over to Amazon, this is it.
Amazon found out I liked Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Frank Sinatra from the '50s, even Lawrence Welk 22 Big Band Favorites.
Amazon found out I liked the "Tonight Show Band" Volume 1 and then Volume 2.
"Doc" has got Dixie, he's got ragtime, he knows about gospel, and he obviously has studied everything beginning with Duke Ellington and from there on.
This album has a LOT of the sheer glory of BRASS but it also has a LOT of the glory of DRUMS and many other things (such as vocalists).
With this album from Doc, the Big Bands have come of age! Big Bands have all grown up and are yours for the taking.
Swingin' Blues Lover from down South.......1999-12-04
Doc is THE BEST! with lots of swing in blues style. The addition of a vocalist makes it truly a classic for all true blues fans. The whole CD keeps you swinging with Ellington and Tommy Newsom greats. There is NO music like it anytime or anywhere!
Superb Big Band Jazz from one of the great Trumpeters.......1999-09-04
Doc has hit the mark big time with a ferocious, tight, swinging, and wailing album of big band blues. The charts (by Tommy Newsome and John Bambridge) are superb, and the band responds by playing the hell out of them. Some of the out- standing soloists include Ernie Watts, Ed Shaugn essy, Snooky Young , and of course Doc. As for the aforementioned, he is playing extremely well. Check out his solo work on "West End Blues" --- he is one of the handful of truly great trumpet players. Another highlight is Bill Holman's sizzling arrangement of "C Jam Blues" - this kicks off the album and will knock your socks off!!! In summary, this is an important album which should not be forgotten when the Grammys are announced. Doc and the band do them- selves proud with this one. Don't miss it!!!

Album Description
"Swingin' on a Seven-String" was recorded on August 12th & 25th in 1982 and originally released in 1984 as "When Lightn' Strikes" on LP. In addition to being the last studio album that Lenny Breau recorded before his untimely death in 1984, "Swingin' on a Seven-String" also remains as the only studio recordings of his seven-string acoustic guitar playing. In addition to the five tracks featuring Lenny and acoustic bassist Jim Ferguson performing duets, Lenny is joined by pedal steel guitar legend Buddy Emmons and drummer Kenny Malone on the remaining quartet tracks. Eight of the eleven tracks feature Lenny on seven-string acoustic guitar, while the other three tracks feature Lenny on six-string electric guitar. All tracks have been digitally remastered from the original analog master tapes using 24-bit digital technology. The CD also features one previously unreleased bonus track, "Blue Eyes Crying In the Rain". The 12-page booklet includes extensive liner notes! by author Ron Forbes-Roberts as well as commentary from Buddy Emmons and Jim Ferguson.

A pure Joy. You should check this cd out!.......2006-03-10
This cd is a unique blend of Jazz and country where Lenny displayed some incredible solos. What a great fusion album this is. It seems to be that some thing happen at the recording and the excitement of this session will not stop from the beginning to the end. A must have!
I've always been a huge fan of Lenny's and this recording is one of his most satisfying. .......2005-09-17
Recorded in 1984 as "When Lightin' Strikes", this Lenny Breau set features the pedal steel guitar playing of the great Buddy Emmons in mostly "country" standards as "I Can't Help It If I'm Still In Love With You" and "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" by Hank Williams. In case you didn't realize it, the seven string Lenny plays is a high seven string. This is the last recording by the incredible Lenny Breau. He himself didn't live to see the release of this recording. There are some fantastic sounds by Lenny and company. I recall when this record was first put out, many fans of his were distressed and thought this was an attempt to make a totally "commercial" recording. That's rather funny when you listen to the beauty that Lenny can coax from a simple tune. Lenny uses his wonderful artificial harmonics plus the classical tremolo he's so famous for. The few tracks Lenny plays electric guitar (1,11) are I think, a six string. The nylon guitar is a seven. The CD starts with "Back Home In Indiana". Lenny and Buddy go crazy exchanging solos with Buddy sounding positively possessed. The warm and delicate "You Needed Me" is Lenny at his best, emotional and controlled. "I Can't Help It If I'm Still In Love With You" (Track #4) and here's Lenny making you feel as if he almost wrote the tune. Fabulous harmonics and you get right into the spirit of what this simple but beautiful tune is all about. The touching "I Love You Because" "Please Release Me" and "She Thinks I Still Care" are delightful renditions. Lenny Breau goes for it all on this record. The wonderful Buddy Emmons plays on all the odd numbered tracks and is sensational. The interplay and fun between them is easily apparent. This is still mostly Lenny's recording. What's interesting to me is that someone like Lenny can take a tune that most people would think of as a country or pop tune and play it like a Kern, Porter, or any other great composer and make it sound like a standard tune that we are all so taken with. It's a joy when these records are released on CD and this is one all Lenny Breau fans will love. I've always been a huge fan of Lenny's and this recording is one of his most satisfying.
Jack Wilkins - Guitarist
For those unfamiliar with Breau's magic, Swingin' on a Seven-String is a perfect place to start. .......2005-06-26
While guitarist Lenny Breau's innovations may not seem so significant now, he was like a bolt of lightning when he emerged in the `70s out of Manitoba, Canada. A true self-accompanist who integrated virtuostic skills in jazz, country, and flamenco into an unmistakable voice, Breau made his guitar sound like an ensemble. Legend has it that Chet Atkins was walking down the hall of a Nashville studio and, hearing music coming out of one of the rooms, said to himself, "Who are those guys?" When he went into the studio and found Breau playing by himself, it was the beginning of a friendship that would last until Breau's untimely and still mysterious death in '84.
With the upsurge of archival Breau sessions in recent years, Art of Life Records' recent rescue of Breau's last studio release, When Lightn' Strikes-now remastered with a bonus track and retitled Swingin' on a Seven-String-finds him at the peak of his musical powers. That Breau was a substance abuser for most of his adult life seems miraculously to have had absolutely no effect on the pristine perfection of his playing. Breau pioneered a number of techniques, including a self-accompaniment that roots contemporary players like eight-string guitarist Charlie Hunter, as well as an uncanny ability to wring rapid-fire harmonics out of his instrument that gave his guitar an almost bell-like timbre. He was equally at home on classical guitar-and a seven-string variant comprises the majority of Swingin' on a Seven-String-as he was on electric.
The new title is wholly appropriate, given the way the entire session swings along comfortably with an unhurried pace. Five duet tracks feature bassist Jim Ferguson; on six tunes, Breau fleshes things out to a quartet with drummer Kenny Malone and pedal steel player Buddy Emmons (both of whom Breau had already collaborated with on Emmons' '78 recording, Minors Aloud, to be reissued by Art of Life in August of '05). Breau's growing posthumous discography has plenty of high points, most notably his '83 live duet set with bassist Dave Young, Live at Bourbon Street (Guitarchives, '95), but he has never sounded so completely relaxed as on Swingin'.
The record draws from popular tunes of the time, like singer Anne Murray's hit "You Needed Me" and Engelbert Humperdinck's faux country tune "Please Release Me," as well as country tunes like Bill Monroe's "Blue Moon of Kentucky" and Hank Williams' "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry." Breau reinvents and reharmonizes, shaping a programme where a wealth of musical riches are masked by an unforced and easy-going complexion.
Breau may not have broken any turf in terms of pushing jazz out of the mainstream, but his interpretive skills and ability to retain a tune's essence while reimagining it in a pure jazz context remains evocative to this day. For those unfamiliar with Breau's magic, Swingin' on a Seven-String is a perfect place to start.

Highly recommended........2005-06-22
Lenny Breau was a talented guitarist steeped in Country music with an interest in Bebop. He blended both loves during these 1982 sessions, playing both acoustic seven-string and six-string electric guitars. The previously unreleased track, Blue Eyes Crying In the Rain, is an added bonus to this CD reissue. Highly recommended.

It is a long-overdue joy to have this highly enjoyable music available again.......2005-06-22
In 1982 the great guitarist Lenny Breau decided to combine a couple of his strongest musical loves, recording Country songs with Jazz chords in a swinging setting. Half of the music on this set is comprised of duets with bassist Jim Ferguson, while the remainder is played in a quartet with Ferguson, pedal steel guitarist Buddy Emmons and drummer Kenny Malone. It has long been an open secret that many Country standards have fairly simple chord changes that are ideal for jamming. Breau, who splits his time between an acoustic seven-string guitar (on eight tracks) and a regular electric guitar (and takes a completely spontaneous off-mic vocal on Bonaparte's Retreat), is in exuberant form throughout this laid-back but happy release. But because Jazz/Country fusions were not exactly in vogue in 1982, this date was only released very briefly by the tiny Tudor label before the company failed and the record went out of print. Lenny Breau was killed in 1984 and this was his last studio album. It is a long-overdue joy to have this highly enjoyable music available again, and it is highly recommended to anyone at all interested in Lenny Breau's artistry.

Words to ponder: it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing. These are words that Big Joe & the Dynaflows live by, making their third album a rare swing-revival treat. Whether tackling original compositions or covers (including Louis Jordan's obscure "Lemonade"), they do it with a panache that makes both sound equally good. I'm Still Swingin' weighs substance over style, swing over speed; "On the Other Hand," for instance, has a slow sultriness that most modern swing bands would be hard-pressed to match. Big Joe pays homage to his considerable influences here, going so far as to include a cover of B.B. King's "Early Every Morning." But whatever the source, it all still swings. --Genevieve Williams
Customer Reviews:
Swinging R&B of the jiving kind.......2006-09-10
Having never heard of Big Joe and the Dynaflows before, this CD was something of a revelation to me. This is swinging music, with the emphasis firmly on 'swing'. The main models here are the small jive outfits that emerged just after World War II, especially the likes of Louis Jordan and his Tympany Five, and the music of Lionel Hampton. Other influences are the New Orleans sounds produced by Dave Bartholomew and Smiley Lewis. The latter's 'One Night of Sin' is included here in its original form, as it was before being cleaned up to provide Elvis Presley with a hit as 'One Night'. Cover versions of songs associated with B.B. King, Percy Mayfield, Little Milton, Roscoe Gordon and Ray Charles also appear, together with four originals by Big Joe himself.
Washington, DC-based Big Joe Maher has assembled an amazing band. The lead guitarist, Alex Schultz, is an excellent player who previously spent years on the road with Rod Piazza. Saxman Mark 'Kaz' Kazanoff blows in that wailing, soulful style of the great tenors of the '40s and '50s, with Joe Stanley joining him on some tracks. Their sound is augmented by piano, acoustic bass, trumpet and trombone, with Big Joe on drums and vocals. Together they swing like the clappers, really capturing the spirit of the early post-war R&B outfits, and it's good to hear this music in the fullness of sound which modern recording techniques permit.
A most enjoyable performance, with plenty of variety between the numbers, and the talents of the individual musicians shining through the swinging ensemble work. If this release doesn't make them better known, it's hard to say what will. Thoroughly recommended to all lovers of jivey R&B.
