About the Artist
Alan Roubik was a child protégé, having played his organ keyboard by ear at the age of 3. By 9 years of age, Alan performed his own compositions as well as classical and ragtime music in numerous talent shows, competitions and fundraising events. At the age of 16, Alan sustained severe damage to the Ulnar nerve in his right arm, making it nearly impossible to move his fingers. Not only immobility, but tremendous pain prevented Alan from competing. He could no longer hold a fork or spoon in his right hand. Doctors suggested surgery, but Alan refused. He was determined to continue playing the piano, and he began to focus on creating compositions that suited his limited hand movements. Unbeknownst to Alan, he had been utilizing one form of music therapy that would eventually strengthen his hand and allow him full mobility to perform again. Ironically, Alan would later become most well known for his music therapy recordings. Over a period of nearly ten years! since his accident, Alan had developed enough strength in his right hand to compose and perform more complex music. In fact, by 1992, Alan had plenty of original songs and the courage and confidence to produce his own record, entitled "Promises". The popularity of this recording lead to the production of the music video "Promises", which was an instant hit on such programs as MTV, Star TV Asia and MOR Music. Since then, has numerous popular recordings, including CD2000, The Four Seasons, Keys To My Heart, Seven Chakras, Elements, and others, as well as other music videos, a film score and commercials. He is also recognized worldwide as a "healing music" artist and producer. His first music therapy recording released in Japan in 1996, entitled Hado Music Series 1 (also known as The Four Seasons), fetched an unprecedented retail price of $100 per CD. Scientifically tested and endorsed by an independent research laboratory in Tokyo, Alan's music is said to have the most healing properties of any modern music. He is the only non-Japanese recording artist to be inducted in the National Archives of Japan for his healing music. Today, Alan's music is used and recommended by doctors, professional athletes and trainers, health, fitness and yoga instructors, as well as spiritual healers.

Tom Petty's love affair with the more pop-oriented output of the Byrds and Dylan at their mid-'60s prime continued to find an increasingly wide audience in the '80s--and damned if some people didn't persist in calling it "new wave." Go figure. If writing hook-laden, instantly memorable pop-rock songs was both a sign of genius and one of music's toughest feats, Hard Promises (and its FM evergreens, "The Waiting" and "A Woman in Love") confirmed that Petty was one skinny, little, hard-working prodigy. Picking up effortlessly where Damn the Torpedoes left off, Petty and the equally conscientious Heartbreakers took nothing about their newfound fame for granted, delivering their fourth strong effort in a row, this one increasingly seasoned with touches of their Southern roots. The title hints at the tough underbelly beneath the jangly veneer of Petty's ever-accessible songwriting, exemplified here by "Nightwatchman," "Something Big," and "The Criminal Kind." All tracks on this edition have been upgraded via digital remastering, and the album's original inner artwork and lyrics have also been restored. --Jerry McCulley

Another Masterpiece From A Righteous Rocker.......2007-04-22
HARD PROMISES is yet another masterpiece by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, featuring such great FM standards as "The Waiting" and "A Woman In Love (And It's Not Me)", as well as such forgotten gems as "Letting You Go" and "King's Road." This CD features great remastering, greatly emphasizing a style whose inflences run the gamut from the Allman Brothers And The Outlaws to the Eagles and the Steve Miller Band to Springsteen, Seger, and the Band. Petty's advocacy of sanctions against Indonesia in retaliation for that country's trumped-up 2005 drug-smuggling conviction of a young Australian tourist makes HARD PROMISES an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.
HIS FINEST WORK!.......2006-07-05
I have been into Petty since day one and I can honestly say that this is the one. Every band has that one album that is brilliant. Torpedos came close, but this is it. Best song in my opinion is Kings Road. A close second is Something Big. Other noteworthy tracks (I mean classics) are
The Waiting
A Woman In Love
Letting You Go
A Thing About You
Insider
If you've heard Petty over the years and haven't purchased anything. Don't start with the best of collections. Start right here. It doesn't get any better.
A TRUE Classic !!!.......2005-12-30
This is, without a doubt, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers' finest moment! I can still remember the battle he had with the record company over the pricing of this album! Due to the rise in oil prices (a main ingredient used to press vinyl albums), the record companies raised the standard list-price of an album from $7.98 to $8.98. TP fought his record company, going as far as threatening to name this album "$7.98"! Finally, the record company relented and priced the album at $7.98, thus allowing "Hard Promises" to be released to the masses! In addition to the classics "The Waiting", "Woman In Love (It's Not Me)" and "A Thing About You", also included is arguably the best TP & THB recorded song: "Something Big". BUY THIS DISC NOW!!!!!
Hard Promises (1981).......2005-10-09
While two years came between Damn the Torpedoes and Hard Promises, Hard Promises tends to be the weakest entry in Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers catalog so far. There are classic Petty tunes here like The Waiting and Insider, but much of the filler is weaker than it had been on previous albums. Songs like Nightwatchman tend to be rather goofy to me. Hard Promises is still a worthwhile edition to your Tom Petty collection, but it is just not as good as the albums that came before it.
Common man.......2005-09-22
If you don't like this album you're dead to the world. Best song - Something Big. Makes you wanna pull a gun on the man before you put a gun in your mouth. Classic period. Sorry all you music aficionados it's a feeling not a review.

In the late '90s, Burt Bacharach--thanks to a boxed set, new collaborations, and numerous reissues--just keeps popping up. And for good reason: his music is nostalgic, filled with great melodies, and instantly recognizable. For many, he's the essence of pop. Promises, Promises, the composer's 1968 Broadway collaboration with lyricist Hal David, is based on the 1960 Billy Wilder film, The Apartment, written by Neil Simon. Jerry Orbach's performance as Chuck Baxter is powerful (it also won him a Tony Award), and though some of the music in Promises, Promises is dated, it's simply infectious. As Fran Kubelik, Jill O'Hara (Hair) performs reflective numbers such as "Whoever You Are" and "I'll Never Fall in Love Again." Bacharach's title theme (a hit for Dionne Warwick) sounds better than ever here--both performed instrumentally and sung by Orbach. At 45 minutes, it's a short listen, but for fans of Bacharach or Broadway, it's highly recommended. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
Ton of Fun.......2007-03-06
This musical is unique in the Broadway literature, having been written by Burt Bachrach and Hal David. Bachrach was the king of pop composers in his time, and he assembled a score that still is infectious and listenable. Almost all of the songs in this score truly advance the plot and help to further define the characters.
I'm sorry that I can't be as generous in my assessment of the singing, particularly that of the late Jerry Orbach. Don't get me wrong...he sings with great energy and characterization, but his intonation is quite sketchy in several numbers. He does shine in "Half as Big as Life", but sort of goes downhill from there. Jill O'Hara has a voice that may be polarizing to several listeners. Her style and aesthetic fit very well with the aesthetic of the late 60's and early 70's. It's sort of a Joni Mitchell meets Minnie Mouse sound. She has her own intonation issues.
But, there are several great moments. The pit orchestra was just fabulous, as were the offstage female voices. The production was very well conducted. The ensemble plays in a very relaxed, jazzy style, but they are always on top of the beat. The solo trumpet was worth whatever they payed. The music in general is outstanding, particularly the overture.
Despite the intonation issues, the cast does bring great energy to the production numbers. Jill O'Hara's ballads ("Knowing When to Leave" and "Whoever You Are") are showstoppers. Orbach's "Half as Big as Life" and "She Likes Basketball" were energetic and fun. His duet with Marian Mercer ("A Fact Can Be a Beautiful Thing") will make you smile. Edward Winter's ballad ("Wanting Things") was poignant and well-sung. "Where Can You Take a Girl?", sung by the four Coastal Life execs, was snappy, brisk, and funny. I would have liked to have seen it done live.
In the end, music is not about perfect. It is about performances that touch you, and that are genuine. That's why this CD is a good addition to your collection.
Highly recommended.
Burt : Please return to Broadway.......2007-01-03
One of the better scores from a 60's musical.
Promises, Promises Original Cast CD.......2006-11-10
It's nice to have this lively Burt Bacharach score on a CD. I was the show back in 1969, and listening to the CD brought back memories of a good time in the theatre.
a stunner of a score.......2006-10-13
PROMISES PROMISES was based on the popular Billy Wilder film "The Apartment", jazzed up with an energetic score from Burt Bacharach and Hal David (their sole musical theatre effort).
The story concerns a meek young man called Chuck Baxter (played by Jerry Orbach), whose working relationship with his boss, J.D. Sheldrake, is tempered by his infatuation with J.D.'s mistress, Fran Kubelik (Jill O'Hara). The story was quite grim and pessimistic in "The Apartment" with a bittersweet Wilder/I.A.L. Diamond screenplay, but the subsequent PROMISES PROMISES featured a new book from Neil Simon (still riding high on his successful and long-running "Barefoot in the Park" and "The Odd Couple"), and the story was prettied-up for the Broadway musical stage. The overall tone and shape of the original story remained but certain areas were streamlined and adapted around the Bacharach/David score.
And what a score it is! It's almost criminal that a score can be so enjoyable. PROMISES PROMISES is filled to the rafters with memorable melodies, and performed so perfectly by a company headed by Jerry Orbach and Jill O'Hara. O'Hara definitely has the classic 'Bacharach voice', an instrument ideally suited to his jangling melodies and inward ballads. "Knowing When to Leave" and the wrenching 11 o'clocker "Whoever You Are", are given definitive readings. Orbach joins Marian Mercer for the fun "A Fact Can Be a Beautiful Thing". Edward Winter, playing Chuck's conflicted boss J.D. Sheldrake, scores heavily with "Wanting Things". Bacharach's dance arrangement for the "Grapes of Roth" sequence is inspired. Which brings us to the choreography...
PROMISES PROMISES featured routines from the then up-and-coming choreographer extraordinaire Michael Bennett; and his future "Chorus Line" stars Donna McKechnie and Baayork Lee lead the manic dance number "Turkey Lurkey Time". McKechnie (playing Vivien Della Hoya) would be the only cast member to reprise her role in the subsequent London production starring Betty Buckley and Tony Roberts. Incidentally (and quite controversially), PROMISES PROMISES was the first Broadway musical to employ the use of body-microphones (at the request of Bacharach who wanted the vocals and orchestra mixed perfectly). Right or wrong, a new era was dawning for musical theatre, and PROMISES PROMISES was at the very forefront. The show opened and ran for 1,281 performances at the Shubert Theatre.
Following a brief CD release from Rykodisc, the good people at Varese Sarabande have reissued the original 1968 Broadway cast album (in beautiful remastered sound) for a new generation to savour.
[Varese Sarabande 302 066 647 2]
Great '60s sound!.......2005-09-23
It's really great to have this cast recording available again! And so appropriate, given the passing of Jerry Orbach, that one of his best performances can again be purchased.
When I think of the sounds of the 1960s, the Beatles and the Beach Boys come immediately to mind. BUT - the music of Bert Bacharach (often with the wonderfully honest and unsentimental lyrics of Hal David) is almost the "official" soundtrack for the period of the second half of that decade. Promises, Promises is a snapshot of that time, when corporate life was almost exclusively dominated by men, sexual liberation was coming on fast, and New York was (or thought it was) the cultural center of America. With this outstanding Broadway cast recording, you can't go wrong! Great to be able to stop playing my sadly worn vinyl LP!

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

It's no coincidence that UB40's biggest hits and most pleasurable songs have been their reggae-rock remakes of other acts' songs--Neil Diamond's "Red Red Wine," Sonny and Cher's "I Got You Babe," the Chi- Lites' "Homely Girl," Bob Dylan's "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight," and so on. Only 1 of the 11 numbers on Promises and Lies is a cover tune, but the band's remake of Elvis Presley's "Can't Help Falling in Love" is a real treat. Featured in the film Sliver, the ballad gets a new momentum from UB40's horns and rhythm section and finds its obsessive quality reinforced by the reggae-dub echoes. The album also includes "Reggae Music," a delightful dancehall workout which neatly balances Astro's reggae toasting against Ali and Robin Campbell's sweetly sung pop-soul hook. Unfortunately, the other 9 songs are full of steady grooves and admirable sentiments but little in the way of melody or fresh ideas that might separate them from hundreds of similar reggae exercises. --Geoffrey Himes

The fourth album from Idlewild, Warnings/Promises sees these Scottish rockers drifting further and further from their genesis as feedback-toying moshpit gremlins; mostly conceived on an acoustic guitar and fleshed out later in the studio, it perhaps makes sense that this is an album that's at its strongest when it catches its creators at their most reflective. Clear stand-outs come with the folksy "I Understand It" and the cello-and-xylophone-accompanied "Not Just Sometimes But Always", restrained moments where frontman Roddy Woomble's vocals--sounding more like R.E.M's Michael Stipe than ever--are granted enough room to spread their wings. However, some of the rockier moments misfire--see the blustering "Too Long Awake", which cuts off abruptly after a few minutes of fairly aimless guitar screech as if suddenly aware it's outstayed its welcome. All in all, there's a feeling here that this is a transitional album for Idlewild, one that catches them in the process of morphing into something else entirely. But who knows? Maybe their Automatic for the People lies just around the corner. --Louis Pattison

It's often said that rock critics are frustrated musicians, but it seems the phenomena isn't restricted to music scribes since Rolling Stone photographer Mark Seliger confessed to Jakob Dylan during a shoot for the august magazine that he wrote and sang alt country tunes during his off hours. The young Dylan offered up his own studio, starting Seliger on a year and a half long process, which ended with the release of Broken Promises, a very credible alt country album that recalls some of the best work of Pure Prairie League and early Poco--but with a darker cast. Seliger recruited a few more of his musical pals, like Gillian Welch, Willie Nelson, Lenny Kravitz, and Meshell N' Degeocello to provide musical and moral support, but the disc is much more than the sum of its stellar parts. Seliger shows he has a strong lyrical sense, and can infuse even the most banal aside with a southern gothic twist, his voice; a mournful, fretful presence that conjures up the baleful winds of the West Texas plains where he was born. --Jaan Uhelszki
