I have followed Jeff Lorber's career for as long as I can remember and I have almost every Jeff Lorber Cd. This by far is the best! It's sultry and soulful and Each track from start to finish blends beautifully. My personal favorite.... Enchanted Way! I can't stop listening to it. I love the beat and I find myself dancing to it nonstop.
This is an excellent Cd and I highly recommend it to anyone. Special shoutout to my nephews who gave me this cd as a christmas gift! Way to go Joshua and Geoffrey!!!!!!!

Jeff Lorber has achieved that coveted pinnacle so hard to climb and inaccessible for most of smooth jazz musicians. Jeff combines freshness, originality, flair and inspired melodic vein in every single track. There is no any minor piece; every one of them in its own way has a special taste. The magnificent arrangements, the presence of Lenny Castro in the percussion and congas, John Roberts in drums, Gary meek flute, Eric Watt guitar Steven Dubin, Nelson Jackson, David Mann and the min star Jeff Lorber make of this album one of the top ten smooth jazz albums of 2005, without restrictions of any sort.

So given these circumstances, the rest of the previous comments how can you fail acquiring this excellent CD ?

Buy it as soon as possible before it is too late.

I would have expected more from Jeff Lorber. He sure can play, and yes, there is a certain catchy quality to his tunes, and yet and still...... something is missing. Maybe a little more variety, a bit more tempo...? All in all, this album is the musical equivalent of a nice, satisfying meal but not out-of-this-world gourmet food.

It was a grave mistake for me not buy this album a bit earlier, i just cannot imagine what i have missed all these months, this album is pure masterpeice and Jeff Lorber is a Genius. I used to only listen to Brian Culbertson but i guess there is one more talented artist to be added in my collection.

Just one of the best, the only downside i can think of is that it could have more then 10, but you know what they "Good Things Come In Small Packages"

When the consensus is that you're the new Dylan, it's your prerogative to rewrite the record industry's rules. So in 1994, the same year Beck had major-label hits with "Loser" and the album Mellow Gold, he saw fit (and was allowed by his label, Geffen) to release three other records on various indie labels. While none challenged Beck's "real" album in quality or sales, Stereopathetic Soul Manure is his most successful collection of unpolished toss-offs. Collecting various low-fi recordings made between 1988 and '93, the record alternates between folkie strumming, pedal-steel country, noise-guitar freakouts, and bizarre soundbites. This is collection of random stuff recorded by Beck between 1988 and 1993. It features folk music, country music, guitar freakouts, spoken word tracks and some indescribable weirdness. One of the odd things is some random guy named "Ken" singing a few lines from the Jimmie Rodgers' song "Waiting For a Train". "Rowboat" is a country song (written by Beck) that was famously covered by Johnny Cash. There are two unlisted bonus tracks on the CD. Track 24 features someone saying "Stuck out here in the sand, they shot my mule and burned my wagon. Ran out of sourdough two days ago. Ain't got no more lard. God bless all you folks." Track 25 features five minutes of silence followed by twelve minutes of noise. Serious Beck fans will enjoy this CD, but it may be too "out there" for some people.

This will be the first in my series of brief reviews spanning Beck's major discography. Technically, "Stereopathetic Soulmanure" was an indie release set to accompany "Mellow Gold" in 1994 as part of Beck's innovative contract with Geffen, which allowed him the privilege of putting out records on independent labels alongside his "major" albums. This arrangement would collapse in 1999, after one such indie effort, "Mutations," was considered by Geffen so good as to warrant a widespread release - naturally, lawsuits and general nastiness ensued. But, in the beginning, all was well and in 1994 Beck virtually exploded on the alt-rock scene with the Loser single. Fans were treated to three albums coming out in the span of one year, of which "Stereopathetic" is certainly the weirdest, most varied, and ultimately head-scratching offering.

The album was recorded over a long period of time, consisting of various demos, experiments, and a few finished songs of stunning quality. As such, it is a mere patchwork of "best-of" goodness from Beck's vault. Other albums, such as the early "Golden Feelings" and demo tapes such as "Fresh Meat + Old Slabs" (put together for Beck's mom's birthday) are also out there, and may be more thematically and temporally consistent, but I will not consider them and focus instead on the few moments of genius found on "Stereopathetic." Beck-ologists could spend hours talking about the stories behind each piece of tape ever uncovered, but this is not the place.

So, one of those stunners that immediately hit the listener with the kind of force that accompanies the birth of a major artist is Rowboat, a classic country song that is so woeful and mourning it even made a fan of Johnny Cash, who covered it a few years later. The superb pedal steel that anchors Rowboat and the album's best track, the dusty travelogue ballad Modesto, elevate the two songs to the sublime. There is a tender, windswept elegance to Beck's delivery that flies in the face of his descriptions as a "slacker," "Gen. X icon," "indie prankster" etc. He is being, or if not, he damn well sounds, deeply sincere. This Hank Williams-inspired character would show up later on "Mutations" and especially on his magnum opus "Sea Change," but the world took little notice when shades of this future were already apparent on "Stereopathetic."

I also have to mention "Puttin' It Down," a rejection-themed acoustic piece that is perfect in its conciseness. Beck's defiant, assured tone and the fuzzy, powerful strumming makes for one of those songs destined to become lost gems.

Finally, it is a bit strange for the smallest and most obscure work in Beck's official discography to produce two of the most popular songs among fans, but so it is. One Foot In The Grave is a raucuous harmonica stomp, presented here in a murky live rendition, which has somehow found its way into almost every one of Beck's shows thereafter (for almost twelve years now, when the harmonica comes out fans go wild, and the improvisations on this song have been endless and remarkably creative).
Satan Gave Me A Taco could almost merit its own review, although, unlike One Foot, it is notable in its subsequent elusiveness. Along with Beck's debut 7" single, the brilliant MTV Makes Me Wanna Smoke Crack, it's the one song a Beck fan would die to hear live (and such events are rare). A story-song of uncommon hilarity and wild inventivity, it unfolds with a slowly developing surrealist twist on the wackiest of ideas and images. Oh yes, and a banjo starts playing. Beck's talent at free-flowing writing (in the purest sense, apart from musicianship) is exercised at various degrees and with various forms of success throughout his career. But Satan Gave Me A Taco is a perfect example of Beck's creative potential when untempered.

As is, in fact, "Stereopathetic" as a whole. There are many interesting moments, and a few extraordinary highlights, but it must be ranked 8th out of 8 in terms of official albums because of the simple fact that, by comparison with all his other efforts, even with "One Foot In The Grave," 1994's other independent release, there is little unity and little polish (ironically, the most disjointed album besides "Stereopathetic" is his latest, the best-of-collage-type "Guero"). As a starting point, it is however a revelation and an unending source of interesting and promising material.

I like all beck. But everyone knows that what made them like beck in the first place was, "Mellow Gold". I've been searching for a beck album that gave that same feeling as mellow gold for a long time. You know that mellow gold feeling?......And I've finally found it. This is a GREAT cd. You should buy it!

This album is fantastic if you are a true, deep down, die hard Beck fan. If you're not, don't buy it! This album is filled with a lot of noise and very experimental sounds. I am a Beck fan but this album turned me off, with the exceptions of "Satan gave me a taco" [which is absolutely hilarious, as well as one of the few musical bright spots on the album], & "Puttin it down" [a great song from beginning to end]. Songs like "Ozzy", & "Rollins power sauce" are great for their comedic value. Other than those listed, I'm not a big fan of most of the music on this disc.

I'm surprised this CD isn't 5 stars yet. This captures Beck's finer expirements. "Rowboat" and "Satan gave me a taco." On Johnny Cash's '96 album "Unleashed" he did a pretty darn good cover of Rowboat. That just is a sample of how royal Beck is.

    5 out of 5 stars Easy contendor for my Favorite Album.......2005-12-15

    Many people know At the Drive In are not the best musicians around. For a band with great musicians, one would do well to look elsewhere. However, At the Drive In make this up by putting all their emotion and raw power into each record they make. Their debut is no exception. Acrobatic Tenement is At the Drive In's strongest record because they are able to convey such power even over bad production. Opener Starslight is roughly over a minute, but it sets the tone for the rest of the album by focusing on the intense delivery of the vocals and instruments.

    There is not one bad track on this album. You can listen to this one without skipping over anything because each song conveys its own message and maintains its own power. That is to say, each is powerful. A particular favorite of mine is Paid Vacation Time, as it matches beautifully with sensation of driving at night through open space, such as California's Central Valley. However, the other songs are just as compelling.

    I found this album to be a bit difficult to get into, but of all of At the Drive-In's albums, it is the most rewarding. The emotionally charged music is enough to make listeners put the repeat button on again and again. Not to compare this album to Punk, but I can understand now why fans enjoy Punk music. The emotion coming from the speakers speaks directly to the listener, much like this one. Acrobatic Tenement is a modern classic, much like Kyuss's Welcome to Sky Valley or even Soundgarden's Badmotorfinger.

    You might know ATDI from their last studio album relationship of command or for bieng the mars volta's and sparta's roots, but if you dont know this album you're missing a great era on Omar Rodriguez and Cedric Bixler's musical ride, this is how it all began, 5 guys from latin america and United States met at El Paso, TX and recorded this garage gem, which goes...

    1. Star Slight: it takes you away from reality and lets you in ATDI's dimenssion

    2. Schaffino: great guitars intro and lyrics...TO BE ALIVE!!!

    3. Ebroglio: a tribute to Julio Venegas that makes you admire him without even having known him...BUT NOTHING REALLY MATTERS!!

    4. Initiation: amazing melody, great song to sing along and yell your lungs out

    5. Communication Drive-In: listen at it a few times and you'll get it

    6. Skips on the record: great composing, not just another punk band

    7. Paid Vacation Time: great vocals n lyrics...A TANK FULL OF FUEL

    8. Ticklish: best song on the album, a preview of In/Casino/Out and Relationship of Command

    9. Blue Tag: strange but great...like Omar and Cedric, reminds me of 70's shows and movies

    10. Coating of arms: loud, disorganized, mess, good...punk

    I'm torn between giving this album 2 or 3 stars; one minute I feel like giving it three, the next I can't quite do it.

    I got into ATDI after they had already gone their separate ways via their Relationship of Command album, which from what I understand from some of the die-hards wasn't very true to their sound. This should come as no surprise since the album was created under the direction of uber-producer Andy Wallace, who took the originality of their raw sound and added considerable polish (and I'll leave it to you to decide how you feel about said "polish" -- I happen to like it).

    As a disclaimer I will say that I've never seen ATDI's live show in person, although I've watched plenty of video. Which is my loss as they certainly had an incredible energy that would have been quite a spectacle to see in person. I have seen The Mars Volta (and am a huge fan) and the energy is still there, although Omar has calmed down a lot.

    Enough digression. True to their sound or not, I loved Relationship of Command and set about adding Acrobatic Tenement, Vaya and In Casino Out to round out my ATDI collection. I have to say that, IMO, Acrobatic Tenement is the weakest and most musically immature of their albums. Unlike some, I don't have a problem with the garage-quality sound and out-of-tune guitars as I think they lend a sense of immediacy and character to the music. I just don't think this is their strongest material. From what I've read in interviews with Cedric and Omar, they don't hold this album (or much of the music made in ATDI) in very high esteem. Not that they denigrate it, but they regard this music as beginning steps in their musical evolution to The Mars Volta.

    Having said all that, this album does have its moments. And it's kind of fun to play armchair quarterback noticing the seeds of divergence between Mike's and Cedric/Omar's stylings which would eventually lead to their split into two very different bands.

    I would recommend this album mainly for ATDI completists. If you're new to the band, check out Relationship of Command for starters.

    All the songs this CD encompasses have a true identity; this gives them a surreal power, specially when you account for the low recording budget. This low-budget production-feel also gives the CD an endearing charm to the band; who contended with all their hardships and made a gem of an album who has the most heart and passion that I've heard in a band of this genre.
    If you just gives the songs a chance you will come to the conclusion that this is a perfect album (you can neither add nor subtract to the overall experience, to emerge with a better result).

    What has happened in todays world of musical bull-sh*t. Why cant a band come along and offer genuine intensity, poetic lyrics , and a lead singer whos voice echoes down from the heavens. ATDI combined rage, anger, love, emotion, raw talent beyond anything I had ever heard. Along with In Casino Out we see cedric hit pitches unbeknownst to mere mortals like ourselves (the audience). If you are a true music lover and can appreciate poetry, intensity and raw emotion/honesty combined with cedric's gift to captivate your soul through the gift of voice......i beg you buy, this album!

    I've never heard anything like this before. I don't know if it jazz, cool jazz, lounge, chill out, or what kind of music it is. I just know it blow my mind away!

    Perfectly is the best of the best. The VERY BEST of Minga.

    I wonder when we'll see a full release of Minga songs? C'mon I can't believe she's a "one-hit-wonder" at all! I guess she has a lot of potential, and this CD demonstrates that.

    Glad to have seen that cheap movie that made me listen to Minga...

    Minga, it seems, is one of those "sweet secrets" in music. I say "secret" because this CD is such a cool surprise, I'm around a lot of music, and I've yet to see Minga on MTV or VH1. But from the way her music sounds, that should only be a matter of time, I guess.

    Anyway, Flipside is an EP. It's only got five songs, but when you consider they're all great, I'd say that's a good batting average, huh? My favorites: The first track "Good" and the title song, "Flipside." The former is serious chillout, downtempo-style sexy -- something you groove to with a glass of something in your hand (I work at a trendy NYC bar/lounge, so I know!). The latter is funky and uptempo, with cool horns and a cool rap interlude. Basically, if you want something special, Minga delivers!

    On Flipside, Minga proves that her writing talents are on a par with her solid singing ability and musicianship. She especially displays a knack for juxtaposing her velvety voice over instrumentation that enhances the sensuality of each song, making Flipside the perfect CD for a night "IN."

      When the consensus is that you're the new Dylan, it's your prerogative to rewrite the record industry's rules. So in 1994, the same year Beck had major-label hits with "Loser" and the album Mellow Gold, he saw fit (and was allowed by his label, Geffen) to release three other records on various indie labels. While none challenged Beck's "real" album in quality or sales, Stereopathetic Soul Manure is his most successful collection of unpolished toss-offs. Collecting various low-fi recordings made between 1988 and '93, the record alternates between folkie strumming, pedal-steel country, noise-guitar freakouts, and bizarre soundbites.       This is collection of random stuff recorded by Beck between 1988 and 1993. It features folk music, country music, guitar freakouts, spoken word tracks and some indescribable weirdness. One of the odd things is some random guy named "Ken" singing a few lines from the Jimmie Rodgers' song "Waiting For a Train". "Rowboat" is a country song (written by Beck) that was famously covered by Johnny Cash. There are two unlisted bonus tracks on the CD. Track 24 features someone saying "Stuck out here in the sand, they shot my mule and burned my wagon. Ran out of sourdough two days ago. Ain't got no more lard. God bless all you folks." Track 25 features five minutes of silence followed by twelve minutes of noise. Serious Beck fans will enjoy this CD, but it may be too "out there" for some people.

      This will be the first in my series of brief reviews spanning Beck's major discography. Technically, "Stereopathetic Soulmanure" was an indie release set to accompany "Mellow Gold" in 1994 as part of Beck's innovative contract with Geffen, which allowed him the privilege of putting out records on independent labels alongside his "major" albums. This arrangement would collapse in 1999, after one such indie effort, "Mutations," was considered by Geffen so good as to warrant a widespread release - naturally, lawsuits and general nastiness ensued. But, in the beginning, all was well and in 1994 Beck virtually exploded on the alt-rock scene with the Loser single. Fans were treated to three albums coming out in the span of one year, of which "Stereopathetic" is certainly the weirdest, most varied, and ultimately head-scratching offering.

      The album was recorded over a long period of time, consisting of various demos, experiments, and a few finished songs of stunning quality. As such, it is a mere patchwork of "best-of" goodness from Beck's vault. Other albums, such as the early "Golden Feelings" and demo tapes such as "Fresh Meat + Old Slabs" (put together for Beck's mom's birthday) are also out there, and may be more thematically and temporally consistent, but I will not consider them and focus instead on the few moments of genius found on "Stereopathetic." Beck-ologists could spend hours talking about the stories behind each piece of tape ever uncovered, but this is not the place.

      So, one of those stunners that immediately hit the listener with the kind of force that accompanies the birth of a major artist is Rowboat, a classic country song that is so woeful and mourning it even made a fan of Johnny Cash, who covered it a few years later. The superb pedal steel that anchors Rowboat and the album's best track, the dusty travelogue ballad Modesto, elevate the two songs to the sublime. There is a tender, windswept elegance to Beck's delivery that flies in the face of his descriptions as a "slacker," "Gen. X icon," "indie prankster" etc. He is being, or if not, he damn well sounds, deeply sincere. This Hank Williams-inspired character would show up later on "Mutations" and especially on his magnum opus "Sea Change," but the world took little notice when shades of this future were already apparent on "Stereopathetic."

      I also have to mention "Puttin' It Down," a rejection-themed acoustic piece that is perfect in its conciseness. Beck's defiant, assured tone and the fuzzy, powerful strumming makes for one of those songs destined to become lost gems.

      Finally, it is a bit strange for the smallest and most obscure work in Beck's official discography to produce two of the most popular songs among fans, but so it is. One Foot In The Grave is a raucuous harmonica stomp, presented here in a murky live rendition, which has somehow found its way into almost every one of Beck's shows thereafter (for almost twelve years now, when the harmonica comes out fans go wild, and the improvisations on this song have been endless and remarkably creative).
      Satan Gave Me A Taco could almost merit its own review, although, unlike One Foot, it is notable in its subsequent elusiveness. Along with Beck's debut 7" single, the brilliant MTV Makes Me Wanna Smoke Crack, it's the one song a Beck fan would die to hear live (and such events are rare). A story-song of uncommon hilarity and wild inventivity, it unfolds with a slowly developing surrealist twist on the wackiest of ideas and images. Oh yes, and a banjo starts playing. Beck's talent at free-flowing writing (in the purest sense, apart from musicianship) is exercised at various degrees and with various forms of success throughout his career. But Satan Gave Me A Taco is a perfect example of Beck's creative potential when untempered.

      As is, in fact, "Stereopathetic" as a whole. There are many interesting moments, and a few extraordinary highlights, but it must be ranked 8th out of 8 in terms of official albums because of the simple fact that, by comparison with all his other efforts, even with "One Foot In The Grave," 1994's other independent release, there is little unity and little polish (ironically, the most disjointed album besides "Stereopathetic" is his latest, the best-of-collage-type "Guero"). As a starting point, it is however a revelation and an unending source of interesting and promising material.

      I like all beck. But everyone knows that what made them like beck in the first place was, "Mellow Gold". I've been searching for a beck album that gave that same feeling as mellow gold for a long time. You know that mellow gold feeling?......And I've finally found it. This is a GREAT cd. You should buy it!

      This album is fantastic if you are a true, deep down, die hard Beck fan. If you're not, don't buy it! This album is filled with a lot of noise and very experimental sounds. I am a Beck fan but this album turned me off, with the exceptions of "Satan gave me a taco" [which is absolutely hilarious, as well as one of the few musical bright spots on the album], & "Puttin it down" [a great song from beginning to end]. Songs like "Ozzy", & "Rollins power sauce" are great for their comedic value. Other than those listed, I'm not a big fan of most of the music on this disc.

      I'm surprised this CD isn't 5 stars yet. This captures Beck's finer expirements. "Rowboat" and "Satan gave me a taco." On Johnny Cash's '96 album "Unleashed" he did a pretty darn good cover of Rowboat. That just is a sample of how royal Beck is.

      This is an excellent CD. Each of the individual players are fantastic in their own right, and together they create some wonderful music. The drummer, Darren Beckett, has a very active style of play - it's as though he's not only keeping time, but continually soloing throughout the CD. Greg Tuohey, the guitar player and Jerome Sabbagh, the saxophone player bring a great sense of melody to the mix. They both play very inventive yet logical lines and express a sense of maturity well beyond their years. Matt Penman rounds out this quartet on bass, and helps tie it all together. If you like good, straight-ahead jazz with a modern edge, I highly recommend this CD.

      These talented musicians, 2 from New Zealand one from Ireland and one from France have put together their first album as this group. Compositions by Tuohy and Penman(New Zealanders) display innovative jazz style combining catchy lyrical themes that build nicely while allowing the musicians to display their not inconsiderable soloing techniques.Recommended listening.
