5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2002-08-20

This pricey UK import CD filled a lot of gaps in my music collection and is an excellent overview of notable music of (mostly) recent films. It's difficult to find consistently listenable soundtrack collections like this, by that I mean free from the obligitory Whitney Houston or Celine Dion embarrassments. Usually rights issues prevent comprehensive compilations like this in the US, too. While I enjoy a lot of soundtrack music, there aren't so many complete soundtracks that I would care to own, some examples of exceptions being Ennio Morricone scores and the About a Boy Soundtrack. While certainly most of these tracks are the actual recordings used in their respective films, I noticed that "La mamma morte" from Philadelphia is not the Maria Callas version. There might be other cases like this, I'm not sure. And "Unchained Melody" from Ghost is an orchestral version, not the pop song (but I consider this a plus). This collection seems to focus on the subtle and quirky, yet melodic music of indie films, with less emphasis on the loud sweeping orchestral scores of major Hollywood hits, but of course there are a few like Gladiator and Braveheart, which are welcome here because like I've said, I probably wouldn't listen to the whole score. I love the two Thomas Newman compositions from American Beauty, and it's good to have some music from films by the Cohen Brothers here. My only complaint would have to be the order of the songs. You would think they would avoid jumping back and forth between pop songs, orchestral scores, and quiet music, but it just seems thrown together by random. I would compare this collection to the excellent "Miramax Films Greatest Hits" but the makers of that album knew to group the two pop/rock songs at the end.

With the visually dazzling efforts of his "Red Curtain" film trilogy behind him (Strictly Ballroom, Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge), director Baz Luhrmann set his sights on Broadway and a reworking of his triumphant, career-forging 1990 Australian Opera production of Giacomo Puccini's evergreen tearjerker, La Boheme. With it now set in 1957, six young voices alternate in bringing the tale of the doomed love affair between the seamstress Mimi (Lisa Hopkins, Wei Huang, Ekaterina Solovyeva) and the writer Rodolfo (Alfred Boe, Jesus Garcia, David Miller) to life in its original Italian on this cast album. Other than using the vocal dream-team gambit, Luhrmann has played Puccini's music surprisingly straight in this production, a sharp contrast to the dizzying musical cut-and-paste of Moulin or his tellingly titled pop album, Something for Everybody. It's a wise tack, and wholly in step with the director's stated goal of emphasizing the story's timeless drama while keeping the operatic masterpiece true to itself for a new audience. The staging may showcase Luhrmann's dazzling production, but the music here is still pure Puccini. --Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars Sometimes pleasing.......2007-01-16

This CD is a bit awkward. It's difficult to get a feel for any of the singers, as the music is divided up between all 6 of them.

There's some good singing on here, notably Jesus Garcia as Rodolfo. Others have compared him to a young Pavarotti, & I tend to agree. I watched & heard him all through college, & he has the effortless style & pure tone.

I'm not too fond of the other tenors, but I thought all 3 women did good jobs.

4 out of 5 stars well performance by the young musicians.......2006-08-31

I am not going to talk about who's review is fair and who's isn't. Everyone has the rights to comment on the performance base on their own interpretation . However, please keep in mind that, 1, this is a Broadway show/production, not an opera!!! 2, everyone in the show is classically trained, some of them are well trained.

Just a FYI.

3 out of 5 stars great to see, okay to hear .......2005-03-22

Of course this recording of La Boheme will not come near, let alone surpass, the likes of Callas or Pavarotti. But that's not a fair comparison anyway, because we must remind ourselves that this recording is a modern(ish) day take, a'la Baz Luhrmann musical panache. To have seen the live performance I must say it was quite a treat. But as for listening to this recording, I am impressed upon only with the youth and novelty. If you are interested in La Boheme in the traditional tried and true Puccini way, then look elsewhere at the deluge of excellent recordings of this great classic. (My favorite is the one by Berlin Philharmonic, Pavarotti and Frenni.) If you are looking for a different take, something different, something of the musical genre--remember operatic singing is very different from musical singing--then I would heartily recommend giving this one a try, but keep in mind that seeing it is the true delight with this production, in all its vivacious splendor. (Hint: Baz Lurhmann's Moulin Rouge was also either a hit or miss.)

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable when viewed live.......2005-01-15

I saw the show a week after its Broadway opening, and I have to admit, it is visually rather stunning, especially the L'Amour sign on stage. The cast is refreshingly young, and rather good looking... which hence may explain the rawness of their voices in the recording versus Pavarotti's. Still remember Pavarotti played the role later in his life than some of the cast members in this recording.

Enjoy it for what it's worth but don't take it too seriously. Opera is an art, not a science.

1 out of 5 stars WHOOPS........!.......2003-07-28

More than five stars for the CD cover and the tiny, tiny, tiny libretto with dy-no-mite photos circa 1957 ..... but in all fairness to the Young, Young Young cast ... this one's quite terrible.

One has to in all fairness {or unfairness} compare this version to the original 1993 Australian version WITH SINGERS, and there really is no comparision. David Hobson set the bar way, way high for any future Rodolfo as did Cheryl Barker's unforgettable Mimi. This present version just does not work on CD due to the confusion of the mixed cast - especially the highly 'indicated' theatricality of one of the Mimis - great in the looks department - but the emoting .....!

The original version tends to be a 'Method' Puccini - AND it works.

Try to get that [imported] CD instead - besides the original was recorded 'live' so the stakes were higher .....

For years I listened to the theme music on Inspector Morse and wondered what it was. Now that Amazon makes it easy to track such things down, I know. These three albums (volumes 1, 2, and 3) combine Barrington Pheloung's wonderful theme and background music with Morse's favorites (be warned, we get into some opera here). The three volumes provide an excellent evening of classical music.

While Hollywood's penchant for unbridled nepotism has produced its share of questionable career results, we're happy to report that this soundtrack collaboration by Alex and Jake Parker for their director father Alan Parker's morally charged courtroom thriller is a notable exception. The two young composers combine their disparate backgrounds--Alex is an engineer versed in electronic studio compositions; Jake a classically trained orchestral composer--to create a diverse score that's a compelling argument for the stylistic freedoms imparted by postmodernism. Alex's work veers from the alterna-electronica of the opening "Another Bleeding Heart" (reminiscent of Alabama 3's Sopranos title song, "Woke Up This Morning") and the even darker "Waterside" to dense electronic soundscapes propelled by tribal drums and punctuated with jarring, abrasive samples. By contrast, Jake evokes Samuel Barber in his melancholy, string-driven cues, occasionally combining his traditionalism with his brother's contemporary electronic bent to evoke music that's as forceful as it is mysterious. Their savvy musical instincts also include source music that ranges from Puccini's Turandot to the contemporary country of Toni Price's "Just to Hear Your Voice" and the plaintive Latino folk flourishes of Correo Aereo's "La Pena Huasteca." This enhanced CD also contains the film's international trailer as well as Web links. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Devastating and moving like the film.......2006-11-09

The music for this film is devastating, heartbreaking, and moving just like the film it represents. Both are loaded with emotion and power, and this is an example of what a film score should be - an extension of the bones of the story. Excellent.

2 out of 5 stars Great Movie But Below Average Soundtrack.......2006-06-27

Don't waste your money on this soundtrack. They left the best song off. The song where they are at the party, eating food. Borrowed my brothers, and I gave it back to him two days later. I will say its a bit melodic, so it might make ok background music but that's it. Dony waste your XViii money on this.

3 out of 5 stars Leonard Cohen???.......2004-12-18

I bought the CD for the Leonard Cohen song Future, (played at the party) where is it ???so dissapointed.

5 out of 5 stars simple yet powerful.......2003-12-19

i just watched the movie, and i was so impressed. the music helped it along very well. although seemingly redundant, there was a successful purpose to it. the simplicity of the music is key in the relationship to the film. if the music was too active, it might've distracted the audience from the movie and wouldn't have had the same effect. the beat to me seemed like a rhythmic heartbeat, which helped the mood of the movie, given this man is on deathrow, and there's only a short amount of time left. coupling of music to films is an art for me, and i loved this one. i recommend it for anyone who loves simple, yet effective beats, and violins (my all-time favorite instrument).

1 out of 5 stars I loved the flick.......2003-04-06

but the CD soundtrack by itself is a major disappointment. a common thread of beat and sound links all the tracks with one drum and one cello. After a few go-rounds, it becomes grating and tiresome. I would pass on this soundtrack and wait for the DVD for a few more dollars.

Twenty years after their accomplished and unsettling first feature film, Blood Simple, the brothers Coen have returned to their film noir roots with an ominous, monochromatic vengeance. As in all their films, music again plays a crucial supporting role and that means the sonic seasonings of career collaborator Carter Burwell, along with a slate of typically obtuse catalog choices. Though that latter music is hardly the sort of smoky urban jazz usually associated with the genre, its mood and composer are as brooding as they come: Ludwig van Beethoven.

New, abridged recordings of LvB's "Pathétique," "Appassionata," and "Moonlight" sonatas and Piano Sonata No. 25 set the tone, along with a Beaux Arts Trio version of Piano Trio No. 7 (and a brief excerpt of Karl Bohm's "Che soave zeffiretto" from Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro). Burwell's original music is shaded similarly, subtly different yet equally somber in mood and character. The composer occasionally reprises his compelling, autumnal string writing from The General's Daughter, progressively darkening the atmosphere to great effect here. The urgent '40s romp "Nirdlinger's Swing" offers up the score's only bowing to period conventions, a brief shaft of light flickering among the shadows. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars A solid score.......2005-03-09

I thought Burwell's contributions to this score were outstanding, although I agree with the criticisms of the classical recordings - not of the quality we've come to expect. Still I think the CD is well worth buying for another interesting Burwell score.

4 out of 5 stars re: Carter Burwell, Perfection, Disapointment, and Noir.......2003-05-05

If you can't seem to find enough merit to this soundtrack to label it impressive or at least concede that it has managed to weave film noir and classical music together in a tapestry of dark, rich, soulful bittersweetness, then you have obviously missed something. Let's not linger too long in thought on it.

Context, folks. Put it in context. Soundtracks are not composed and arranged as stand alone albums, but rather as the rhythm to which a movie is played out. Within the confines of these cinematic constraints, the album manages to wriggle and squirm enough to accomplish what other soundtracks fail to do: it becomes more than background noise, and writes itself into and becomes indispensable to the film.

I am not afraid that I must disagree with whomever contests that expecting only perfection, we are never disapointed. On the contrary, high hopes and high expectations lead mostly to disapointment, as anyone who has expected this much from anything could tell you.

The soundtrack has the flavor of noir, that mysterious, twisted edginess and allure. Burwell's contributions stand out. While acting as critic, please don't make the mistake of comparing this soundtrack to purely classical renderings. To do this would be like comparing great tea and excellent coffee and complaining that tea makes a horrible cup of joe. Classical musicians make their money by interpreting others' pieces and playing them with precision. This is not the case when arranging pieces and composing your own score. Hats off to Burwell.

If you enjoy the novelty of original and compelling music, buy this album now. Conventional classical enthusiasts beware.

4 out of 5 stars Carter Burwell does another swell job on this one........2002-08-15

You might know Burwell best for his score on Fargo but 'The Man Who Wasn't There' is another solid job by one of Hollywood's best composers.

While nearly half of this cd focuses on some songs by Mozart and Beethoven, the score is solid. You will hear the main theme played four different ways on this score but they are all splendid, a melody that is somewhere between the description of relaxing, beautiful, and dark.

Another Burwell cd I highly recommend is Hamlet. Hope you enjoy either of these cd's if you pick them up in the future. I know I have. Enjoy!

2 out of 5 stars All the flavor, none of the calories.......2002-05-29

This album creates an ambience that captures the film noir flavor of the film, yet lacks much of the substance that makes for a great film soundtrack. I must disagree with the opinion of Mr. Moodindigo2 when he asserts that you should not go looking for perfection in an album, rather accept it for what it's worth. Somebody once said, "If you only accept the best, you'll never be disappointed." Beyond the technical flaws discussed in other reviews, I found the choice of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 8, (AKA The Pathatique) so hackneyed that I almost gave up on the soundtrack before the second track played. And then they went ahead and repeated it! Aaaaaaack!

To be fair, there is some very interesting music on this CD, especially the brief pieces specifically written for the movie by Carter Burwell. I found the songs compelling and beautiful. However I was very disappointed with the classical pieces interspersed throughout the album. I'm a bit of a completist when it comes to classical music, and because I'm so familiar with them, I found the Beethoven pieces distracting when they didn't transition into the next movements. One track infuriated me because it was cut off in mid-movement! Even if it didn't play all the way through in the movie, that's no reason to cut it short on a CD!

Also, since I'm being critical: I didn't find the phrasing or playing of the piano pieces especially moving. I guess I've been spoiled by far superior versions by Brendal, Kissin and others that I own. Again, why settle for less than the best?

Five stars for the music written by Carter, but minus three stars for the sound quality, editing and performances of the classical works. Look to THE RED VIOLIN, 2001, A SPACE ODYSSEY or even AMADAUS for a lesson on how classical music should be used in a movie soundtrack.

3 out of 5 stars Beethoven & Billy Joel - Response to Andy Alabama.......2002-05-28

Hi Andy,

Also noticed the similarity between This Night and Pathetique. Of course, if you read the liner notes to "An Innocent Man" by Billy Joel, you'll see he gives full credit to Ludwig Von Beethoven. Joel grew up playing classical piano...

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars for Ying Huang!.......2000-09-07

I bought this album simply for Ying Huang. And I was not disappointed. It's such a pleasure to listen to her voice: a purity of tone, a slight whisper sometimes at the start of a phrase, another something that I can't describe that happens when a long phrase is ending - a new tone, one so beautiful it can only be heard for perhaps 8 seconds in 75 minutes of album.

Ying Huang's voice is incredibly mature - not in an academic or learned sense, but innately so, as though this maturity had been with her all throughout her life. She knows exactly what she's doing, but knows intuitively.

It seems a love of singing has combined with some genetic gifts, creating a singer so wonderful that sometimes I doubt whether we are actually allowed to hear her. But we can, in this and several other albums. If I had millions of dollars I would produce a Ying Huang album every 6 months. My conscience now asks if this is true - shouldn't I give it to those in need? "Perhaps", I answer, "But the world will truly be better off with more of Ying Huang". She is a missionary for the soul whose message is beautiful as well as believable.

My only worry was that there was not enough Ying Huang on the album. The other singers and musicians are great. Only, I don't really know this. Compared with Ying Huang everybody else is reduced 10 fold. You only want to hear her, and when another part is sung you exclaim "No, what? why is that man shouting?!!". There is a nice duet somewhere in there though.

I suppose the best way to sum this all up is with a quote from one fine reviewer (who is a lot more economical than I) It's a good album "especially for the Ying Huang..."

5 out of 5 stars A Showcase of DH's Mozart........2007-02-09

If Don Giovanni wasn't casted by Mozart with sufficient solo arias, this soundtrack made it up by having the same singer singing the part of Leporello as well.
In recent years DH has focused primarily on his native Russian reportoire. In part, this is a true loss to operatic fans.
Here in Don Giovanni, DH demonstrates what a versatile singer he is.
Personally I find his timbre suits the role of Don Giovanni more than Leporello. Even so, in terms of singing, the great solo arias of Leporello were handled very well too in this recording.
If the orchestra is not as first rate as other top-notch ones, and the rest of the cast less well-known, the singers of Zerlina and Commendatore did come up with more than competent performances alongside with DH.
Just for the sake of a truly good baritone singing a truly great opera, this soundtrack is a must to own.

5 out of 5 stars Masterful Don Giovanni.......2002-03-21

I'd say Hvorostovsky makes the best Don Giovanni there is. Despite his temperament fits more to Verdi than Mozart, I really love his exquisite lyric baritone voice in Mozart. I was extremely impressed when I heard him sung the Count at Salzburg back in 95. He is my favorite Mozart interpreter ever since. I don't think anybody else could quite pull off "La ci darem" and "Serenade" so seductively as Hvorostovsky does. His "Champagne aria" is at most perfect tempo, and even Lepollero's "Catalogo aria" sounds so sensuous. This is the only recording of his Mozart. I should be thankful to have this at all since he sung both Giovanni and Leporello. What a clever idea!

The film version of "Lepollero's Revenge is quite a treat.
Dmitri's portrayal of both Don Giovanni and Lepollero is absolutely charming. He showed his comical skills so well.

He'll sing Don Giovanni at the Met next season and The Marriage of Figaro at Paris, so he keeps the balance in between various Verdi productions.

5 out of 5 stars what a thrill !.......2001-12-16

To hear my favorite singer perform my favorite opera is a treat indeed, and through the the magic of modern technology, we get to hear him do duets with himself, as both the Don, and Leporello. This dual casting, as the booklet says about this hour long film, "...alludes to the notion that the Don and his servant are alter-egos, opposite sides of the the same person".

One of the reasons I like this CD is that I get to hear all the parts of this opera (including the overture) that delight me, all on one disc...also the recitativos, which are sometimes the most delectable of all...and Hvorostovsky does them so well, with his flawless Italian.
I also love the trio "Al taci, ingiusto core", and the sestetto "Sola, sola in buio loco". Of the lovely melodic arias, the "La ci darem la mano" duet, and the beautiful Serenata are wonderful, and perfectly suited for his rich baritone.

In the cast there's Dominique Labelle (Donna Anna), Gary Relyea (Commendatore), Liesel Fedkenheuer (Donna Elvira), Michael Colvin (Ottavio), Krisztina Szabo (Zerlina), and Alain Coulombe (Masetto), and though they may not be of Hvorostovsky's stature (few singers are !), they do an excellent job of backing him here. I especially like Relyea, and he gets to sing in what for me is one of the greatest scenes in all opera, the final trio, starting with the Commendatore's "Don Giovanni, a cenar teco"...now to hope this film becomes available on video !

5 out of 5 stars El Che Guevara an International Image........2005-07-08

Although I was never a radical or communist, being of Cuban extraction El Che was one of the personalities that I admired during my younger years as I grew up in Miami Florida and received all my education in the U.S. He was a roll model for most of the Latinos.
When I was young (teenager with long hair), I was the product of the 60's environment.
The psychedelic era was fascinating to me. My room was decorated with black lights, posters; the smell if incense, candles and the music was an addiction. However, the picture of El Che was one of my favorite items in my room. I had a picture taken on 31
October 1972(Halloween night) dressed as El Che Guevara. They say that I had close resemblance to him. The picture still exists to this day. This CD brings back memories from the movie that was very popular at that time. He was an inspiration to me in many ways with his philosophy and helped me pull through the hard times that I was going through. Buy the soundtrack and the movie, you won't regret it. Well "Hasta siempre comandante"!

5 out of 5 stars Top music. Grotesque movie.......2001-07-18

Many years ago during a heavy rain afternoon in Madrid, the best thing to do was to enter to a cinema. The one nearby presented "Che!" and it was hilarious to see Jack Palance playing the role of Fidel Castro, as well as the actor (don't even remember his name) who played as Ernesto "Che" Guevara. The movie is simply and totally grotesque and it constitutes an insult to the only authentic revolution ocurred in Latin America during the last century (the Mexican included). On the sunny side of the street, is the music: Schifrin shows he is a master of composition. He truly feels what he was doing and capts both the Andean and Cuban sounds with respect and dignity. Don't miss this record.

4 out of 5 stars Among the best early Schifrin to be heard on disc........1998-12-09

Most critics and moviegoers would agree that the film Che! by Richard Fleischer is one of the very worst movies of all time. Just imagine... Jack Palance as Fidel Castro, and Omar Shariff as Che!!! Nevertheless, the film has one redeeming quality, and a very good one at that. Lalo Schifrin's music for Che!, so far neglected because of the film's poor ratings, is surely one of his very best early efforts, and it has elegantly withstood the test of time. Music from the tropical jungles, music from dusty South American cities, music from the Andes... Schifrin has packed his soundtrack with a remarkable mixture of excitement, raw energy, nostalgia and plain sadness. The melodies are rich and memorable, and Schifrin's orchestration (including many indigenous instruments) is right on target. The obvious highlight: the main theme of the soundtrack, presented in two very different versions, one for solo guitar, the other for an orchestra of South American instruments. Schifrin's soundtrack for Che! is surely a must for his fans, and certainly for film-music connoiseurs.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Placido is the ultimate Otello.......2006-03-03

When I wanted to buy a good Otello CD (with Domingo of course,) I had to choose between the one we have here, and the one with the Opera de Bastille.
So far, I have listened to this La Scala performance for a thousand times, and I realy think it is supreb. Placido Domingo sounds powerfull, mighty. He is the best Otello. He sounds like to role was writen just for him. Justino Diaz as Jago sounds surprisingly good, evil and dark.Unlike some others, whose vioces are way to high for this role. When he sings his aria "Credo in Dio Crudel..." one can rely hear how evil Jago is. Katia Ricciarelli as Desdemona is soft and gentile. She is also one of the reasons why I like this recording so musch.
The orchestra, under maestro Lorin Maazel is great. Altdough Maazel's tempo is a bit slower (that Levine's for example), they are makin great music. And the special effects are just there to make it more perfect.

And finally, this is not a soundtract in the real sence of the word. This a genuine Otello recording.
Don't be hasitant, buy it and enjoy it.
