Until "A Skateboard Party" is released, this is it........2006-12-24
For those of us who were unable to see this band play when they were first out, this is a wonderful spotlight of what the band was like before acrimony slipped into the mix and Jello's ego became more important than the music. For those who've seen the "Reunited Dead Kennedys" without Jello (let's just say "Nazi Punks F*ck Off" is about Punks who act like Nazis, whatever the latest lead singer says nonwithstanding), this is a snapshot of what the real band was like. For those who've long expected songs done live to sound exactly like they were done in the studio, this is full of songs which were not released on studio albums, or were rewritten on the way to the studio ("Back in Rhodesia" comes to mind); other songs may not sound as peppy as they did in the studio because the band had to play them live - and they did a good enough job even though it may not be what you hear on the studio release.
This is the whole show with Jello's chitchat included. It's also a complete set. Both of these make this release much better than the "Mutiny on the Bay" atrocity that came before this.
Authentic look at raw authentic punk.......2006-01-11
To begin, this CD is very good and a buy for seasoned DK listeners. The quality is good and so is the set list. However this is not a CD that will likely be enjoyed by those not already familiar with the works, as some of the songs are performed a bit sloppily. Understand though that this is the Kennedys live in their hay-day and that is what punk is, especially harder punk; pretty inconsistent and rough on stage. If you buy this CD don't expect studio tracks, expect to smell the sweat a little if you know what I mean. I have read that Biafra condemns these reissues, however his opinion is obviously biased considering he no longer holds rights to the "dead kennedys". In summary this is a naked look into the actual past of one of America's best punk bands live and in their element, it is a very worthwhile album and valuable to the true listeners. If this CD was not released the public would be hard pressed to ever peer into that evening in San Fran and get their fill of smoke, sweat and speed, but thankfully the recording is now available to those who want to listen. Good packaging too.
Get your snake oil here!!!.......2005-06-29
Ha!! This is crap!! There is nothing at all here that is worth the purchase. The only cool thing is the disco version of "Kill The Poor" which is actually REALLY good. This set was recorded before FFFRV was released and it shows. Every song pales in contrast to the later studio versions. I was very interested to hear how the extra guitar would embellish the songs, but a very curious mixing job almost hides it in back. And as for all the 'hype' about the unreleased song "Gaslight".... there was a reason it went unheard: because it out and out stinks!!! A strong chorus catch phrase does not make a good song. It sounds unfinished and chaotic. The cover songs at sets end are also pointless and boring... This cd sucks. 'First Mutiny On The Bay' (which was pretty atrocious... don't tell me those were the best versions of songs they could find for that turd, that's pathetic), then this... Come on Biafra-less Dead Kennedys... stop living in the past. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see these guys are only out for the bucks. This release would NOT make a fan out of the band. I'll repeat that one: It will NOT make a fan out of the band. Why not a "new" live album with their newest replacement (i won't say scab) singer? Play all the old crappy, forgotten tunes you dropped, rock out your best karaoke versions of your 'greatest hits' and give us a real treat to hold in our hands. Better yet, instead of rehashing the past, why not put out a NEW album, with NEW songs. I triple dog dare ya!!! See if Biafra was really as unimportant to the fans and band as you seem to imply in interviews. If he was, why this crap rehash? The only good points about this are the very clean sound and Ted's killer drumming on "Ill In The Head". Oh and nice booklet of "new DK art".... not!! Pathetic... another half hearted attempt at cashing in on past laurels with absolutely no clue. I admit it, you got me again with the proverbial carrot on the stick!!! Forked out another dime on you snake oil salesman. And like true snake oil, the promises were in the packaging. Stay Away!!!
Good But Not The Best.......2004-09-04
This is a good live Dead Kennedys cd but I think that the cd Mutiny On The Bay is a much better live cd. I don't know why everyone hates Mutiny On The Bay and loves Live at the Deaf Club. I own both cds and I like Mutiny On The Bay much better then Live at the Deaf Club but your the one buying the cd so it's your choice.
Dead Kennedys rule!.......2004-08-20
The title sums up what I think about this band - at least what it was prior to their fall-out after the scandal. This live album is quite the gem. Even though this show took place a little over five years before I was born, I still can get a feel of what it might have been like to sit in the audience of a Dead Kennedys concert. It's that good. Plus, it's the original 5-piece lineup with Jello, East Bay Ray, Klaus, Ted, and 6025! And it includes the never-before heard song Gaslight. This is a good cd. Is it essential to your DK collection? Probably. I know for a fact I don't regret spending money on it.
Happy listening.

Customer Reviews:
Powerful!!.......2002-09-23
This is a fantastic record. Gillan is at the top of his lungs here, he was 32 at the time, he was at his best. His band of Bernie Torme on guitar, McCoy on bass, Towns on keyboards and Underwood on drums was simply fantastic. And this shows in these live performances.
Unfortunately, according to Gillan's own self-biography, things were not good within the band... the musicians always asked for more money and were not satisfied, what would lead to the band's dissolution. First, Torme left, in came Janick Gers. Then, after the albums DOUBLE TROUBLE and MAGIC, Gillan (the band) was gone.
LIVE AT BBC is very good, the only problem is the duplication of songs. OF course we're not talking about an official live release at the time, but a release made by bassist John McCoy in the nineties. I wonder if Gillan is earning any royalties upon this one....
HIghly recommended!
Very good but.........2002-09-22
Since finding Gillan best albums is almost impossible (Mr. Universe and GLORY ROAD, mainly. FUTURE SHOCK is a little bit less difficult), I was obligued to buy this bootleg, that has material from the first two aforementioned albums.
The band live is sounding really great, altough there is a lot of improvisation, extending the songs. Also, in CD 1, for example, there are two shows, qwith exactly the same songs. SAo. inthis CD we have THREE versions of the song "Mr. Universe!"
Anyway. that's the best I could lay my hand upon, while I'm still searching for GLORY ROAD.

Anita O'Day live...it can't get any better than this, from song selection to what she does with a song. No matter how many times you've heard the song, Anita will make it sound like something new. There is quite nobody like her and this is all what jazz vocals shoud be about. Her sense of improvisation is amazing and though she does not have the best voice in the business, you hardly notice. Her 7o's live recordings are the best way to understand her artistry. Highly recommended.

You really had to be there........2000-01-21
A real trip down Memory Sewer, these guys were the first punk band in Austin and achieved their notoriety by getting busted by the Austin PD in the middle of their first show in Raul's, a dive on the drag that turned into the greatest punk bar there ever was. I didn't see that show, but I saw most of their other ones (me and six other weirdo/losers). I was the tall guy in glasses that always stood in the back. The Huns were always fun because they were so over the top, and this recording of a Dallas show catches them in all their ragged glory... they won a battle of the bands in Austin ( I still lay awake wondering how) and got to play in Dallas for this show. It's loud, it's cheezy, and I love it because it puts me right back there in Raul's, where I heard the best music of my life. My only complaint about this CD is that they could have included the immortal "Glad He's Dead/Busy Kids" single... it's not like I'm gonna get it elsewhere on CD... but the Huns were a great band/force/whatever, and I'm glad I've got this to remind me of when I was a young drunken college bozo with no friends and money to burn... all hail the Huns!

An Excellent Snapshot of a Raw and Hungry Band.......2004-06-29
While this does not have the polished mastering of a studio record, this is a great live album. Yes, the vocals are a little subdued at first, but they are not inaudible. Whoever mixed the recording realized after the first song the vocals were buried, so they turned 'em up a little. Keep in mind this record was mastered from TAPES of a LIVE recording that was never intended to be released to the general public. Throughout, however, the mixing is clean and balanced, the vocals are in front, as they should be, the bass and drums are present but not overpowering. The cymbals are crisp as are the guitar licks, however they are not clipping (exceeding the maximum volume input, causing square waves, basically fuzzy noise). Halfway through the album, the band is on fire, tight and firing on all cylinders. Hell, it DOES sound like a studio recording at points.
There are shades of the Allman brothers in certain passages and echoes of Skynyrd in the slide guitar. And, yes, that good ol' Northeastern Florida accent that we are all accustomed to hearing live from Donnie Van Zant, brother of Synyrd frontman and part-time frontman himself, from the band .38 Special. Also in common with frontman Don Barnes of .38 Special, Molly Hatchet doesn't have the crowd in the palm of their hand, they have their arm around the shoulder of the crowd, like an old drinkin' buddie.
As a performing and recording musician myself, a son of the South and a lover of the raw, blues-influenced spirit of Southern Rock bands, I would highly recommend this record to Molly Hatchet fans. It's also a great embarcation point for you younguns who are out there cuttin' your teeth in the smoky bars and keepin' it real.
Enjoy, and have fun.
~R
This CD would have been incredible...IF...................2003-12-02
Danny Joe Brown's vocals are barely audible except between tracks when he's talking. Whoever remastered this should have turned up the vocals a tad. If they had done this, I think this would have been one of the greatest live Southern rock concerts ever recorded.
A Great Live Artifact From A Great Band.......2002-09-25
This archival show by Molly Hatchet is absolutely stupendous. It features the earliest known recordings of several songs bound for FLIRTIN' WITH DISASTER, including "Let The Good Times Roll", "One Man's Pleasure", and "Boogie No More." It also features the first live versions of some songs from the first album, plus the otherwise unrecorded "T For Texas", "Harp Jam", and "Crossroads." The centerpiece is the cautionary midtempo grinder "The Creeper." Overall, this CD belongs in any Southern rock record library
LIVE AT THE AGORA BALLROOM (LIVE).......2001-03-26
DON'T EXPECT AN AIR TIGHT RECORDING. EXPECT RAW, UNBRIDLED, UNINHIBITED, ENTERGETIC, TRUE TO THEIR ROOTS, SOUTHERN ROCK 'N' ROLL. IF YOU ENJOY STAYING UP LATE AND HAVING A FEW BEERS WITH YOUR FRIENDS WHILE LISTENING TO KICK ASS ROCKERS, THIS MAY BE JUST WHAT YOU NEED.
Theo's thoughts on Hatchet at the Agora.......2001-01-23
It's too bad that a band of this calibar has to be associated with such a poorly recorded product. The 3 stars are out of respect for a band I've truly loved to listen to for more than 20 years. Any audiophile who's a fan of MH should consider not buying this CD. Having said that, and on a positive note, this '79 show at the Agora would have been one to attend! Great set list with some previously unreleased material (as far as I'm aware)...Jimmie Rodger's "T For Texas" and Robert Johnson's "Crossroads". The introduction to the players ("Harp Jam") is a highlight as well. This band of "originals" are about as tight as a band gets when they're "on". They were close at the Agora, but slightly off on several tracks, especially the opening track of "Bounty Hunter". They did warm up though, and the unbridled "rawness" of this very talented group of players shines through.

Customer Reviews:
An 18 year old tape.......2001-05-05
Made in UK in 1997, Serial# CDPUNK-93, Playing Time 43:16
Release #16 from the band, but recorded way back in 1979 at The Nashville in London for the "The Biggest Prize in Sport" tour, called "The Biggest TOUR in Sport".
Since releasing the "Face To Face" album back in 1985, there has been 4 other live albums ("Lust Power And Money", "Live And Loud!!", "The Cellblock Tapes" and "Live In L.A. 1991"), as well as the compilation "Scandal In The City"; basically, not much new stuff besides their "You Us It!" album from 1993.
The recording quality here is fair, with the bass up-front (for once!). The renditions are honest, and were recorded during what I consider to be their peak.
Of the tracks contained here, 3 deserve a special mention: "Brent Cross", a never-before released song, while "Lie Lie Lie" and "Ain't Gonna Tell Ya" were already released as b-sides.
Out of their numerous live albums, this one's my favorite because of the era and the material included, a "best of live" of sorts.
Not spectacular, but a good introduction to the band if you're unfamiliar with their stuff.
poor sound quality.......2001-04-22
the cd is not worth [the price]. the vocals break up and the tape drags. the cd was made from a 20 year old amateurish tape and sounds like the quality of a worn cassete but it is clear. [....] if you can handle [inferior] sounding cds the content is good. i cant.
not more of the same..........1999-12-10
This disc will not convert the unbelievers, but if you are already a fan of 999's particular blend of rock and roll you will enjoy this one. The sound quality is ok..., it sounds like the tape is running a bit slow, and is a bit muddy. The song selection is cool though, with more uncommon songs like QUITE DISSAPOINTING, BRENT CROSS, TROUBLE, and BIGGEST PRIZE IN SPORT included. The best live 999 recording remains the vinyl ep "the biggest tour in sport," but this disc is a most adequate picture of the band at one of thier creative and popular high points.

Album Description
This 2 disc set features Live In Dallas 1979, which boast good sound quality, and Live At The Ritz 1987, which, despite its bootleggish fidelity, boasts a ferocious performance. This document of an Austin show, which begins with 'You're Gonna Miss Me' and runs through 'Bloody Hammer' has bracing guitar work by Will Sexton and is worth hearing, especially for the incidental stage remarks. Last Call. 2005.
