About the Artist
New York-based jazz vocalist Diane Hubka has been winning international acclaim ever since her debut CD ‘Haven't We Met' - featuring jazz legend Lee Konitz on alto sax - was nominated for a 1999 Jazz Award for Best Recording Debut of the Year, alongside rising stars Stefon Harris, Ravi Coltrane and Brian Blade. Jazz critic Scott Yanow heralded her second CD, ‘Look No Further', in the LA Jazz Scene as "one of the best in recent times." Her newest outing, ‘You Inspire Me', is a tribute to her love of jazz guitar. It features seven of the jazz world's top virtuoso guitarists, including Bucky Pizzarelli and Gene Bertoncini, and looks set to take her career to even greater heights.

This Blue Ridge Mountain-bred singer grew up in Western Maryland in a musical family - her mother was a singer in a folk music group - and learned violin, trombone and guitar from an early age. Her first exposure to jazz was when she heard Joni Mitchell's version of ‘Twisted.' In college she joined her guitar teacher's group as a singer, and developed her love and knowledge of jazz even further. "My teacher, Bill Bittner, playing his big, hollow-bodied Gibson L-7 guitar with a Charlie Christian pick-up, made a permanent impression on my young jazz ears," she says.

In 1989 she moved to New York, after winning a jazz fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts for private tuition with master vocalist Anne Marie Moss. She studied with Sheila Jordan, Harold Danko, Gene Bertoncini, Connie Crothers and Barry Harris. When acclaimed songwriter Ray Passman ('Boplicity', ‘Down St. Thomas Way', ‘Israel/ It's Your Dance') caught her act at Cleopatra's Needle, he offered to help produce her first CD. It was the beginning of a successful recording career.

Diane Hubka has performed as a vocalist at New York's top jazz venues including Blue Note, Birdland, Knitting Factory, Jazz Gallery, and St. Peter's Church, as well as holding a long-running engagement at Java ‘N Jazz, where she accompanied herself on guitar. Traveling to her hometown, she was the featured soloist with the Western Maryland and Potomac Highland Symphonies. Her national tour to celebrate the release of her second CD, 'Look No Further', was a ringing success and included appearances at the Central Pennsylvania Mellon Jazz Festival, Washington DC's Blues Alley, and the Jazz Spot and Lunaria in Los Angeles, CA with legendary guitarist John Pisano, winning rave reviews in the LA press.

"Making this new CD was a dream come true," says Hubka, who also plays the guitar and sometimes accompanies herself in New York venues. "It's such a versatile instrument and I wanted to show its many colors. Each guitarist has such a unique sound!" You Inspire Me opens with the master Brazilian guitarist Romero Lubambo in his ‘Trio da Paz' (Nilson Matta, bass and Duduka da Fonseca drums,) for a rousing rendition of the rarely recorded ‘Love', by Ralph Blain and Hugh Martin. The band lays down a fabulous Latin groove over which Diane's sexy vocals soar, ending with a thrilling scat.

Guitar greats Bucky Pizzarelli and Frank Vignola follow with an infectiously swinging duo behind Hubka's sweet-toned vocals on the Rodgers & Hart classic ‘Blue Moon'. The duets with virtuosos Gene Bertoncini and Jack Wilkins are stunning in their understated simplicity. And the trio songs each with Paul Bollenback and John Hart - with John Ebert on bass and Jeff Hirshfield on drums - round out the variety of textures, colors and moods of this wonderful and unusual recording.

As CD Now has noted, Diane Hubka "casts a wide net for her material," and this CD is no exception. Hoagy Carmichael's Winter Moon is an exquisite case in point, and the vocal version of the guitar standard Nuages, by Django Reinhardt, with new lyrics by Dr. Frank Forte, is equally inspiring.

Inspired; and yet...........2004-04-21

Here, I love the concept of the album and I love the arrangements. Most of the arrangements are '60's and 70's tunes, either famous ("I Feel Fine", "Did You Ever Have to Make Up Your Mind", "She's Got a Way", and "Tired of Waiting for You") or not so famous by famous people (John Lennon's "Love" and Randy Newman's "I'll Be Home"). As good as they are, my favorites here are the arrangements done from "The Great American Songbook", or Sammy Cahn's "I Fall in Love Too Easily" and the highlight, a wistful, wonderful duet with Larry Goldings (piano), Irving Berlin's "Blue Skies." (Curtis explains in the liner notes, in justifying the wistful, almost melancholy feel to this, that Irving Berlin could be ironic. I disagree; I always thought that Berlin meant exactly what he wrote. I don't see any room for irony in songs such as "Alexander's Ragtime Band," "When I Lost You," "Always", or "The Girl That I Marry", to name but four. So, the fact that he could create effective irony where it really doesn't exist is tre cool, in my opinion.)

The reason I settled on 4 stars, then, is his voice. Curtis Stigers has a raspy, rough sound in his lower register; it's reminiscent of a cross between Dr. John, Willie Nelson and the "Nashville Skyline" Bob Dylan. But he's a better singer than those 3, because he has a very powerful, clean upper register, which shines through in tunes such as "Fools in Love" and "She's Got a Way." I think he'd be better off if he'd rely on his upper register in his arrangements. I also note some intonation and diction problems at the end of his phrases, and I think he's too good of a singer to have those. Similarly, at times his tenor sax sounds like Lester Young, at other times like Eddie Harris; I'd like to hear him settle on one voice. But, to my ears, these are things he can fix the next time around, and I really hope he does. In any case, recommended.

But then, Hubka is not just another singer. Her first CD, Haven't We Met - with jazz legend Lee Konitz - was nominated for a 1999 Jazz Award for Best Recording Debut of the Year, alongside rising stars Stefon Harris, Ravi Coltrane and Brian Blade. Her second release, Look No Further, was heralded by jazz critic Scott Yanow in the LA Jazz Scene as "one of the best in recent times."

"Making this new CD was a dream come true," says Hubka, who also plays the guitar and sometimes accompanies herself in New York venues. "It's such a versatile instrument and I wanted to show its many colors. Each guitarist has such a unique sound!" You Inspire Me opens with the master Brazilian guitarist Romero Lubambo in his `Trio da Paz' (Nilson Matta, bass and Duduka da Fonseca drums,) for a rousing rendition of the rarely recorded `Love', by Ralph Blain and Hugh Martin. The band lays down a fabulous Latin groove over which Diane's sexy vocals soar, ending with a thrilling scat.

Guitar greats Bucky Pizzarelli and Frank Vignola follow with an infectiously swinging duo behind Hubka's sweet-toned vocals on the Rodgers & Hart classic `Blue Moon'. The duets with virtuosos Gene Bertoncini and Jack Wilkins are stunning in their understated simplicity. And the trio songs each with Paul Bollenback and John Hart - with John Ebert on bass and Jeff Hirshfield on drums - round out the variety of textures, colors and moods of this wonderful and unusual recording.

As CD Now has noted, Diane Hubka "casts a wide net for her material," and this CD is no exception. Hoagy Carmichael's Winter Moon is an exquisite case in point, and the vocal version of the guitar standard Nuages, by Django Reinhardt, with new lyrics by Dr. Frank Forte, is equally inspiring.
