About the Artist
James ("Jimi") Tunnell, born in Denton, Texas, began his wide-ranging musical career as a Classical/Jazz trumpet player. While studying at the University of North Texas James switched to guitar as his primary instrument. After college he formed the band "360" with Rob Kilgore (Stevie Winwood, Hall & Oates, Chaka Khan) which launched him into the New York live and studio music scene.

Jimi is a master musician whose diverse talent encompasses many musical styles from Pop and R&B to Jazz and Classical. He is a stunning vocalist and a brilliant guitarist. He's also a sought-after arranger, composer and producer.

Jimi has performed and recorded with such diverse artists as Carly Simon, Laurie Anderson, The Bee Gees, Arcadia (Duran Duran), C & C Music Factory, Malcolm McClaren, Arthur Baker, Little Louie Vega, Cover Girls, New Kids On The Block, Southside Johnny, Paul Schaffer and Will Lee (David Letterman), Steve Smith (Journey), Hiram Bullock, Teo Macero, Omar Hakim (Sting, Madonna), Dennis Chambers, Victor Bailey (Madonna, Weather Report), Kenny Garret, Mino Cinelu, Tom Coster (Santana), Adam Holzman (Miles Davis) and The Bob Belden Ensemble.

Mr. Tunnell toured extensively in Japan with Yellow Magic Orchestra artist Yukihiro Takahashi. He later succeeded Mike Stern as guitarist for the electric Jazz super group Steps Ahead touring internationally with the band for three years. As the first artist to successfully incorporate vocals into their live concerts, his original compositions were greeted with wild enthusiasm at Jazz Festivals such as North Sea, Montreux, Milan, Paris, etc...

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2005-11-23

I first came across this CD in the early 90s, sold under the original Japanese label Glass House. I was absolutely won over by Jimi's guitar playing. He has a slight touch of Scott Henderson, but his writing and arrangement was top notch.

I also purchased other CDs from Glass House Records including, Dennis Chambers, Mona Lisa Overdrive (with Adam Holzman) on keyboards, all featured Jimi on guitar. A few years later, he was also featured on arranger Bob Beldon's tribute to Prince CD. Not only could Jimi play the guitar, he's also a good singer.

Earlier this year, a friend of mine from Hong Kong made a DVD transfer for me, it was Steps Ahead's concert at the New York's Bottom Line with Jimi on guitar, Steve Smith on drums, Racheh Z on keys, Bendik Hofseth on sax, killer DVD.
