Customer Reviews:
Calling Paula Abdul Fans.......2007-07-05
I found this cd to be exactly what I was looking for. I was in the mood to hear some Paula Abdul and was pleasantly surprised to hear all my favorite songs from her. If you are a Paula fan and you want to hear the perfect selection of her best songs, this is the cd for you.
Fantastic collection ;->.......2007-06-21
This is so great to have all the songs of Paula's that we love, on one cd. Sure, it's similar to her last Greatest Hits (yes, cover too), but this has Bend Time Back Around on it which the other didn't. It has all of my favourites like Forever Your Girl, Crazy Cool, If I Were Your Girl and Blowing Kisses In The Wind.
I really wish she'd bring out new material, but for now this will do I guess. Loving her since the beginning, this is a treat to have all these songs in the one place. I still love her music and can't stop playing this all the time. A MUST for all her fans.
Stop screwing with Vibeology!.......2007-06-12
This is by far a better collection than the previous greatest hits package. The non-single tracks here are better too. I suppose Virgin Records keeps including the insanely edited "Vibeology" video version for the sake of time? No Paula Abdul fan wants to hear the song chopped almost in half. And any non-Paula fan certainly isn't "getting" how great the song is by listening to it on this CD. Still, if you're a fan of Paula or of late '80s/early '90s top 40, this is a must-have.
Straight Up! Is Right..........2007-06-06
If you don't have one or the other of her greatest hits releases, get this one. Not only are there more songs and less filler, but the sound quality is better. It looks like in the seven years between greatest hits packages, some sonic wizardry has happened.
Paula has just never sounder better. I figure this release is to capitalize on her American Idol role, and smart of her to do so, but there is more here for the dollar as well. SO sell your old one and give this version a spin. I think if you have the least interest in her, you and your toes will be happy.
What the heck?????.......2007-05-15
I don't understand why they had to come out with another Paula Abdul's greatest hits album. I know it's been about 7 years from her other greatest hits album, but there is nothing special about the new one. It pretty much has the same songs and almost has the same cover. I mean she is wearing the same outfit. I really love Paula Abdul's songs so I sticking with her first greatest hits album. Why should we waste money on a greatest hits album that has one or two more new songs when we can stick with the orginal greatest hits album.
I just want to say that the one star is not because of Paula Abdul, it is because they had to come out with another greatest hits album with the almost the same cover and her wearing the same outfit.

Still lives on.......2007-05-23
I was 10 years old when I bought this and it was the first new album that I had ever owned. I wanted it because of "Baby Blue" and "Day After Day" just like everyone else but I fell in love with the rest of the songs immediately. They are just as fresh today as they were the day I peeled the cellophane off of the album 35 years ago.
Growing up a Beatles freak I was not disappointed because you can really hear that Beatles influence through out the album. "Sometimes" and "I'd Die Babe" have a great Rubber Soul sound to them and "Perfection" is just a great song. Hell, they are all very good!
This is such a great mix of song writing and influances coming together to record a timeless album.
Every time I see one of those top 100-album lists I cannot believe how after this one is over looked.
A true classic and a must have for your collection.
The early days bite back.......2007-05-08
This holds very special significance for me, being one of the very first albums I ever owned, well, on permanent loan to me by a boyfriend I last saw on my 16th birthday. I used to lie on the floor and cry to Baby Blue and the intensity and hard knocks these guys experienced within just a few years adds to the precious worth it holds for me. We all suffered in our separate ways. It's so heart-wrenching even today and as with so many of my old favourites it still has the kick it always did, they present this as though every line comes from the very deepest places in their hearts, and for this I am ever so grateful.
Because of the beatles.......2007-03-20
Since I have a new beatles wave (every 2 years) my quest for beatle relatives goes further. Not that you can compare Badfinger with the fab, but you can hear the big influence. This is their third record on apple, the prestige label of the fab. Enough over the fab. About Badfinger. This is a real good steady album with some memorable songs. It's often recalled as a copy of No Dice, their previous album, but I won't agree with that. It's a forgotten classic. But isn't all of badfingers history forgotten. Two members commited suicide because they never got the first place. They were always second best and I don't agree with that. They were a band aparte with some real pop classics on their CV
The Name of the Game .......2007-02-27
Worth the price of admission for the heartbreaking song by ...(when you consider what happened in 2 years for him)...Pete Ham, Name of the Game.
Take it all, Baby blue are just 2 of the other highlights to this fine album. The only confusion are the bonus tracks, which are an earlier (rejected by apple) version of the album. Was apple out of their minds?
Haunting and timeless..........2006-10-21
A masterpiece, timeless even at inception. And considering the history of Badfinger, it's even more precious; listening to it transports me to a time and place like no other music.
Song after song, expertly-crafted, gorgeous power pop at its finest. Yet as a total work, it is so much more...there always was this odd, old-soul patina about it, like a dream in an abandoned ballroom with the faint, shimmery strains of some orchestra long past..a tinge of almost prescient sadness for what would soon befall the band.
Whenever I hear "The Name of the Game", it makes me cry. Every time. I am among those who know this is a crown jewel of its genre. Pete, Tommy, and now Mike...you left too soon, never realizing how you touched us all. Thank you for what you left behind.

...With A Twist!.......2003-01-04
This is Bob James' third trio release. It features him with bassist Christian McBride and drummer Brian Blade. Starting off, we get an unusual re-working of one of Bob's classic tunes, "Night Crawler" (originally on HEADS). "Ambrosia" is a perky tune which in one section reminds one of Michel Legrand's "Little Boy Lost". "James" is his treatment of Pat Metheny's tribute to James Taylor. "The Jody Grind" is a danceable tune by Horace Silver, featuring an unusual solo from Bob. Next comes a broody standard "Lost April". Bob's enigmatic "Three Mice Blind" with it's scary intro is my personal favorite. "Hockney" is a funky number, possibly in tribute to the artist of that name. "Shooting Stars" is a slow-swinging tune. We close with Bob's version of the Denny Zeitlin classic, "Quiet Now". STRAIGHT UP is a masterful effort from one of jazz's great keyboars masters!
At last the jazz soul of Bob James re-emerges.......2002-07-31
This is quite a treasure from the King of highly produced Quiet Storm fusion-jazz pop/muzak/funk. Even at his most shamelessly commercial, Bob James' keyboard solos have been consistently interesting. That aspect is evident here, in a very pretty straightahead and sensitively performed trio album that, I dare say, evokes Bill Evans at times. Nice.
Beautiful music.......2000-01-31
This is an amazing CD. It is the perfect CD for just sitting and listening to. I have a collection of CDs which go into random play mode for when I just want to sit and read a book while listening to music. This CD is on the top.

like coffee and chocolate on a Friday evening.......2005-04-18
If I were to select songs for a contemporary jazz vocal collection, I would choose 'In walked bean' from Kitty Margolis, which is a perfect representative of her work. Her humorous scat singing is something we missed in the world of jazz singing, where women are given certain stereotypical roles. The new jazz women bring their intelligence to their singing. Kitty Margolis' witty and experimental style carries her to surprising tastes such as the Indian flavoured interpretation of 'Speak Low'. You have never heard it like this before.
However, the peak of this album is unmistakably 'Wouldnt it be loverly' which is almost like coffee and chocolate on a tired but content Friday evening after a long week's work. Not to forget the contribution of Charles Brown's duet to this song. The only other song, which gives me such a similar pleasure is Betty Carter's 'When its sleepy time Down South'.
'Kind of Blue' of vocal Jazz.......2003-12-20
Some people say that if you do not like 'Kind of Blue' then Jazz is not for you. I say that if you do not like this record then vocal jazz is not for you. This is the record to start your vocal jazz collection with. The rendition of 'Fever' by Kitty Margolis is 'the' rendition for me, it is worth the price of the whole CD. Besides stunning music that will leave you out of breath long after this CD stops spinning you get audiophile quality of sound into the bargain. This is an examplary CD for testing hi-fi equipment because it not only offers you crystal clear sound recording but also rich instrumentation with lush spatial arrangments. There is no excuse for not buying it. Do it now!
Margolis sets the bar for jazz singing today.......2003-10-27
I just re-listened to this CD and am once again blown away by Kitty's sound, her arrangements and the production of this excellent set. What depth and range this artist has! I just looked at her website (www.kittymargolis.com) and see that she has a a new LIVE CD coming out early 2004. Can't wait to add it to my Kitty collection. As far as I'm concerned Margolis sets the bar for jazz singing today. She can do no wrong.
Stunning.......2000-12-16
I have to admit it took me a minute to get into this album. At first, I was a bit overwhelmed by the sheer variety of the songs, and just that it wasn't quite what I expected from a jazz vocal album. A friend urged me to listen to it again, and now I feel like every time I listen to this CD I get more out of it. It's really an amazing treasure-trove of music, full of incredible singing, and remarkable musical performances. I was expecting Roy Hargrove to be featured on a hard swinger, and instead he plays muted trumpet throughout, subtly and beautifully--The Night has a Thousand Eyes is a perfect example. I was expecting Charles Brown to be featured on a blues, but no! He appears on a rollicking, obviously tongue in cheek party version of In Crowd (!), and a very slow and painfully poignant Wouldn't it be Loverly, which highlights the original and quite deep meaning of the lyrics.
All in all, this CD is a stunning surprise. I play it over and over, and can't get enough of it. Kitty Margolis is not just an incredible jazz singer, she's also a remarkable (and undersung) musical innovator. She makes everything seems easy and doesn't hit you over the head with her talent. She scats effortlessly and in a way that shows off her amazing command of the idiom, but never sacrifices musciality to show of her considerable chops. She digs into the blues hard, and sings ballads straight from the heart. Pay close attention, listen repeatedly, and you'll be richly rewarded with hours of pleasurable listening. This is some of the most inspiring music I've heard in many, many years.
I love it!.......2000-12-14
This is such a great CD I can't stop listening to it! Kitty Margolis has an incredibly versatile and consistently compelling voice. Straight Up With A Twist is a glorious journey through musical styles, moods and rhythms, one that I want to take over and over again!

Photoglo's "Sparks" Sparkle with a Tepid Affection.......2006-01-24
Prime Cuts: That's How Strong Love Is, That's Love to Me, Fishin' In the Dark
Magic is ignited whenever Photoglo's pen touches paper. Though he has released a few albums in the early 80s and though he has toured with Andy Gibbs, they are all lobotomized compared to his songwriting prowess. Being responsible for number one hits such as Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's "Fishin' in the Dark" and Alabama's "Hometown Honeymoon" plus album cuts by Travis Tritt ("Dixie Flyer"), Tanya Tucker ("Silence is King"), Faith Hill ("You Give Me Love") and Highway 101 ("Honky Tonk Heart"), Photoglo's songwriting credentials are irrefutable. Stepping up to the microphone, "Sparks in the Radio" is this hit maker's first album in 5 years. Despite his constricting tenor that struggles at times in reaching the more challenging high notes, this is compensated by this CD's stellar songs. Thanks to co-helmsman Larry Michael Lee (producer for Restless Heart and Alabama), there is an understated production that is largely acoustic with a Don-Williams-type sound. Like a warm bath is to a tiresome body, and like a warm fireplace is to a bitter cold winter, this is an affable attempt marked by a tepid endearment.
Reaching back into his repertoire is Photoglo's own re-cut of John Anderson's "Hillbilly Hollywood." Telling the story of a burgeoning singer who dreams of playing at the Opry, this paean has a small town flavor that is perfectly brought out through Photoglo's understated though nuanced delivery. The other cover is Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's "Fishin' in the Dark," though it does not have the scenic immediacy, this Wendy Waldman/Photoglo still is one of the finest work of art in country music.
Among the newer originals, Photoglo's finest moments are in the ballads. While many poets and scribes have tried to define love, Photoglo's "That's What Love Is" is a worthy attempt. Guided by just an acoustic guitar for the most part, listen especially to how Photoglo croons: "When the phone rings and I hope that it's you/When the day ends and you'll be home soon/I Catch myself smiling/.../My heart flies like a leaf in the fall/The poets may disagree/But baby that's love to me." And to concretize what a great ballader Photoglo is, "That's How Strong Love Is," a tale about growing old together, reams with a heartwarming fervor that even the stars are charmed.
But Photoglo does cut loose on "Slam the Door," a bluesy house stomp tinkered by some Jerry-Lewis-type piano playing. Smothering also is "Baby Looks Good," a guitar lead rocker in praise of his pregnant wife, is Photoglo's best bet at targeting country radio. Despite being released on a small label, big things truly do come in small packages. While many of today's country CDs are all about the beep and the bang, "Sparks in the Radio" champions on the quality of its songs-songs well written and songs that sparkle with lives of their own.

Well done with a couple tiny flaws.......2004-12-21
The overall rendering of Godsmack's hard rock style to String Quartet was well done. Any true Godsmack fan need not bother reading any further into my review, Trust me you'll want this! Their are a couple flaws:
The solos are awesome, But I think they could have been a little faster and heavier.
The actual songs on the album(even though they are good)Well I think they should have went more random direction. Instead they focus mainly on more popular songs.
But thats basically it, But don't think this is a bad CD. All godsmack fans and even curious Classical string fans will like this one.
I myself listen to this album often.
