If Andy Summers's gigs in the late 1990s fell short of expectations, Green Chimneys, his 1999 Monk tribute, showed great improvement, and the progress continues in this homage to Mingus. His line playing is still occasionally a little halting, but he has some very respectable solos on "Opus 3," "Cumbia Jazz Fusion," and "Free Cell Block F." And there are also sterling contributions from Randy Brecker, Hank Roberts, Deborah Harry, and others. Above all, though, the album's success flows from the same arranging intelligence Summers brought to the Police 20 years ago. The old chestnut "Goodbye Porkpie Hat" is about the only suggestion of cliché, with a string quartet (courtesy of Kronos) arrangement of "Myself" showing the breadth of the leader's imagination. Fellow Policeman Sting showed an interest in jazz after leaving the service, but as this richly varied and entertaining set shows, Summers, free of the pressures of stardom, has been the one to more fully explore the music. --Mark Gilbert

Album Description
First time collection on CD! This Jane Froman package features the 1952 Broadway Revival of "Pal Joey" (where Jane provided the lead vocals for Vivienne Segal) along with the original soundtrack to "With Song in My Heart" - the 1952 film starring Susan Hayward in the life story of Jane Forman (Jane provided vocals for the film). The classic Rodgers & Hart "Pal Joey" album also features a standout performance from a young Elaine Stritch singing her showstopper "Zip." Digitally Remastered.
Customer Reviews:
with a song in my heart/pal joey sound tracks.......2007-03-31
I actually was so pleased to see a CD available because I have been longing for the movie "with a song in my heart" to become available on VHS and then on DVD, and it never has, so now at least I can enjoy the songs from the movie. The cast track from Pal Joey was just an added bonus.
With A Song In My Heart CD.......2007-03-19
I saw the film, "With A Song In My Heart" when I was twelve or thirteen years old and have wanted the sound track for many years. As an impressionable teenager in the 1950s, I have collected over time many of the films from that time on VHS or DVD, to satisfy my memories of the period. I regret that this particular film is not available on VHS or DVD, but, this CD is the next best choice. It is really enjoyable to hear the richness and depth of the voice of Jane Froman, who was one of the best singers of the time. I can still recall many scenes from the film and this CD revives the memories so well.
A Jane Froman double feature........2006-09-16
This DRG CD pairs two recordings starring Jane Froman.
WITH A SONG IN MY HEART
Susan Hayward played Jane Froman in the film but Froman herself dubbed the vocals. This album of songs was originally issued as a 10" Lp. None of the tracks are taken from the film: They are all studio re-recordings. Later, Capitol re-released it as a 12" LP with two extra songs added. It is that expanded [program included here. Froman is in great voice, though the orchestrations are overly lush and string heavy. Still, the songs include such standards as "It's a Good Day", "Get Happy", and "Embraceable You" making for an enjoyable mini-concert.
PAL JOEY
Capitol's cast album of the 1952 revival has long been a collector's item. The original Lp was deleted in 1960 and did not resurface until Broadway Angel released it on CD (briefly) in 1993. As the stars of the revival Harold Lang and Vivienne Segal had already made a studio cast album for Columbia - an album that helped inspire the revival - they were unable to re-record their songs for Capitol, and the label turned to Jane Froman and Dick beavers to fill in. The revised orchestrations sound dated now, but here is a chance to hear Elaine Stritch singing "Zip" and to enjoy the lusty voice of Helen Gallagher early in her career.
In the end it's the WITH A SONG IN MY HEART selections (making their debut on CD here) that make this CD worthwhile. For PAL JOEY the studio recording (available from SONY) is preferable, however if one is so inclined you can assemble your own cast album of the '52 revival by combining tracks from both releases.
"Pal Joey's" Pal.......2006-07-30
While the legubrious and over-orchestrated songs from the film "With a Song in My Heart" are typical of their era (and Jane Froman's stilted renditions are what once stood for emoting) the "Pal Joey" cast recording is an absolute delight. The orchestrations are bouncy and jazzy in a way that has long been forgotten, and the performances (except for the aforementioned Ms. Froman, whose Vulgnarian renditions are at times quite disconcerting, and who hits the sonic notes like lazer beems but misses the emotional ones by a country mile) are exceptional. Helen Gallagher deserved her Tony from the evidence of this recording, with Elaine Stritch not far behind her. But the overall impact surpasses any recording of "Joey" including the historic one that lead to this revival. There's energy, intensity and a whole lot of fantastic song writing (leave it to to Rogers and Hart) to satisfy any musical theater fan. A must have for anyone who loves "Old Broadway."
another great twofer from DRG.......2004-01-21
Jane Froman was one of the top vocalists of her era. Froman's greatness is celebrated in this new 2-on-1 album, which comprises the film soundtrack of WITH A SONG IN MY HEART as well as the 1952 Broadway revival cast album of PAL JOEY.
WITH A SONG IN MY HEART was the life story of Jane Froman, with the lovely Susan Hayward in the lead role. Froman herself supplied the singing for the film. Numbers include "It's a Good Day", the bittersweet and humorous "They're Either Too Young or Too Old", "Blue Moon", "Get Happy", "Tea for Two" and "I'm Thru with Love".
The 1952 Broadway revival of PAL JOEY was the result of the huge success of a studio album released by Columbia the year before (which featured Vivienne Segal reprising her original role of Vera and Harold Lang as Joey). Segal and Lang headlined the new revival with Helen Gallagher (SWEET CHARITY, HAZEL FLAGG) as Gladys Bumps and Elaine Stritch (ON YOUR TOES, GOLDILOCKS) as reporter Melba Snyder.
Having already recorded their roles for the Columbia album, Segal and Lang saw little need in re-recording them for the revival album on the Capitol label. Instead, the roles of Vera and Joey were covered by Jane Froman and Dick Beavers.
The cast album suffers on many levels. First, the absence of Segal and Lang is quite distracting, and secondly the new Overture can't even compare with the scintillanting original.
The Columbia studio album is the version to buy in addition to this, though both albums have their strong and weak points. As per usual, Elaine Stritch brings her impressive and formidable comic timing to the fore in the show-stopping "Zip", and Helen Gallagher's silvery voice is perfect for "That Terrific Rainbow".
A fine addition to your collection. [DRG 19054]

Customer Reviews:
Well worth the price.......2006-04-13
I love this CD. No, despite its name it is not the "ultimate" collection, as scarcely could be expected from a single CD. It is heavy on Mikado, as others have stated. It leaves out things I would have included and includes things I would have left out. But the performances are wonderful, traditional and all you expect from G&S. Considering the low price, it is well worth including in your G&S collection ... as PART of your collection. After the disappointment of the godawful Opera World video series (Don't buy it!) this CD is a joy and a relief.
Not Exactly "The Ultimate" Collection..........2004-12-23
It seems that a collection of Gilbert & Sullivan music that has the name "The Ultimate Collection" in its title would boast a wide range of music, but I found the selection disappointing. Half of the tracks are songs from The Mikado, and the other half is divided between five... yes, FIVE other operettas. This means that the representation from each operetta is awfully scant. I would have liked to see less Mikado and more of everything else, and perhaps some highlights from the more obscure operettas (Princess Ida and The Sorcerer, namely).
In addition, while most of the music is very well performed, some of the vocalists either go a bit overboard or, at the very opposite end, seem to lack expression. For example, this Nanki-Poo (in The Mikado) seems to be overly occupied with vibrato. Katisha's voice is annoying, and The Mikado's low voice often seems to lack feeling and humor. The other idiosyncracies, like the very frightening evil laughing during "A More Humane Mikado" and hissing during "Three Little Maids" really bug me.
Then again, I'm new to Gilbert and Sullivan, and was introduced to the music through the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, which has a noticeably less operatic style, and hardly includes "stage noise"... so perhaps all this is the norm. Do listen to the tracks for yourself, though, before you purchase the CD. Personally, I find that the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, while considerably less ecompassing, is much lighthearted and easier listening.
Where's the chicks?!?!.......2003-05-15
It wouldn't be G&S if not for the ladies - so where are they? How could they leave out Mabel's aria - or Josephine's!? The only female aria included on this disc comes from Mikado, which is the least exciting (if G&S could be un-exciting) of the three! Everything else on the recording is great, but I am still quite disappointed.
Not quite the ultimate...........2002-03-25
This is a great collection, but unfortunately it doesn't have songs from all the works of G&S. Most notably, there is nothing from the "Yeoman of the Guard". I still reccommed it however as John Reed is wonderful!!
Great Music - Questionable Selection.......2002-02-05
It's an ongoing challenge to find a recording of Gilbert and Sullivan that combines premium musicality and great theatrical performance. This recording is a true gem on both fronts. My only complaint is that for a "Best of" collection, this compilation is Mikado-heavy and scarcely touches on highlights from other masterpieces, particularly The Pirates of Penzance. This would be my favorite G&S CD of all time, of only it included tracks like "When the Foeman Bares his Steel," "Poor Wand'ring One," and "Dry the Glist'ning Tear," but then again, I guess there's no real consensus as to which are Gilbert and Sullivan's best works, and there are too many to fit on one CD.

Customer Reviews:
Valuable historical perspective.......2004-01-25
This album contains most everything you need to know and hear about Peggy Lee. It's a worthy addition for your collection if you like Diana Krall, Jane Monheit, Tierney Sutton, or Diane Schuur. All of these singers have their roots in and owe a debt of gratitude to Miss Lee, Frank Sinatra's favorite singer, as she was the pioneer of the cool, sultry, effortless sound. "All right, okay, you win" shows as well that she was respected by the instrumentalists she worked with. Recommended.
Sure To Be A Favorite In Your Collection.......2001-12-10
Although nothing short of a comprehensive box set can do full justice to Peggy Lee, this collection will be a welcome addition to any collection, for it includes a number of essential tracks as well several less often heard but equally impressive recordings.
In general, the collection focuses on recordings that have a distinctly bluesy undercurrent, such as "Why Don't You Do Right" and "Fever." At the same time, the collection also manages to find room for such light pop recordings as "Call Me," a killer live recording of "Well Alright, Okay, You Win," and a surprisingly effective cover of River's "Seventh Son."
Regardless of the specific track, Lee's vocals are superior on every recording and her interpretations--here ranging from the drop-dead restrait of "For Every Man There's a Woman" to the sassy "I'm A Woman"--are Peggy Lee at her finest, irreproachable throughout. Strongly recommended.
PEG WITH CAPITOL THE SECOND TIME.......2001-07-02
Generally interesting best of recordings of PEGGY with CAPITOL.What is MISS LEE's greatest strenght is that she can take ordinary songs and transform them so it seems they are better when she sings them.FEVER is a perfect example;this song was also recorded by ELVIS in the early sixties. You should not be disapointed if you buy that record. However be warned,if you need one collection from PEGGY,you must buy the 1952-1956 DECCA collection which really shows her wide range better than this.Long time fans will enjoy this side of PEGGY LEE.
Just Perfect.......1998-07-28
Peggy Lee's smooth, silky voice captures the essence of any song-be it ballads or swing. She sings from the heart and I could listen to her for hours.

Great easy listening jazz album..........2007-07-07
I originally bought the LP as a kid of 13 and played it to death (1957). It was an early intro to jazz and I was a fan of big band music also. I recently have started to collect "older" albums that I had as LPs and was glad to see this one available. My other 1st album was Errol Garner "Concert By The Sea" that still is so soothing in traffic now that I have the CD.
I can highly recommend this album as well as Errol Garner. Ms Lee was in her prime and a joy to hear. Mr Shearing was one of the finest jazz pianists and pairs up with Ms Lee beautifully.
Wonderful recording.......2007-04-10
I remember hearing this album as a kid. I found it wonderful then and find it wonderful now. I have to confess that I do prefere the album with the additions of the talk and the clapping - yes, I know that this was added later but it does give the album an added excitement.
Still ....... with or without the clapping and the chat, it is a great album with some masterpieces (in my opinion) - but then, I am a fan!!!
Ah Memories!.......2007-01-11
As a kid in the fifties I grew up listening to my Dad's 'long playing records'. The original of this was one of my favorites. It was sad to read that the version I found so exciting, with the sounds of the audience, was faked in a studio. I used to get goose bumps when Peggy would say, " Shall we swing a little?" and the audience of DJ's exploded into rapturous applause. It may have been fake but it made exciting entertainment and isn't that what it's all about?
There is something lost in this version, a little flatness that wasn't present in the one I grew up with. Never the less, it's one of the all time great performances and if I had never heard the original I would be more than satisfied

Another favorite from yesteryear..........2006-01-30
I was delighted to find this in CD - it's one of my favorites from many years ago!
First live album for both Lee and Shearing, and only one done together........2005-11-14
Originally recorded in 1959 and re-released in 1992, this landmark CD features all new arrangements developed during in an intense three days of rehearsal before this live performance. Shearing was relatively new to the US and its audiences, but Lee became a fan the minute she heard him and was thrilled to make an album with him. A saloon-singer/composer/jazz artist, and always a professional, she was known for her attention to the smallest detail, not a trait that lends itself naturally to albums recorded "live," but with Shearing at the keyboard and his quintet in the background, Lee sounds relaxed, swingy, and light-hearted here.
Featuring songs from the Great American Songbook--by Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hart, Duke Ellington, and Oscar Hammerstein and Jerome Kern--with some Afro-Cuban, blues, and the debut recording of her own romantic ballad, "There'll Be Another Spring," the CD offers variety, at the same time that it maintains its mellow approach and overall lightness.
Shearing is the consummate accompanist on the songs the two do together. Her voice is always out front, with his chords, runs, key changes, and playfulness on piano remaining in the background to enhance her voice and songs. The bluesy "I Lost My Sugar in Salt Lake City" and "Blue Prelude," a blues song given an upbeat treatment here, are among the most exciting and interesting on the CD. "There'll Be Another Spring," a beautiful, romantic ballad written by Lee, is recorded for the first time on this album, taking advantage of her restrained passion and dramatic, whispery voice.
Shearing, whose quintet was famous for his early adoption of Afro-Cuban rhythms and the fine blending of piano and vibes, solos with Armando Peraza's "Mambo in Miami," in which Peraza himself supplies the unusual percussion and syncopated beat. In his second solo, "Isn't It Romantic," he matches his arrangement with the lyrics, creating one of the most romantic songs on the album.
Two bonus tracks, including "Don't Ever Leave Me," a dramatic and passionate plea by Lee, and "Nobody's Heart," both recorded earlier and not part of the live performance, are added to this CD. Fine music by two fine musicians make this an album for romance-if one can ignore the fact that the intros to all the songs were added after the fact when the album was edited. n Mary Whipple

A terrific suite of small pieces suffused with melancholy underneath even the most upbeat melodies. This is a composer with whom I was unfamiliar until seeing a San Francisco Ballet piece choreographed to music from this CD. The program notes to BLUE ROSE which was a World Premiere in the 2006 season say in part:
"On the heels of his decision to create one new work for the 2006 Repertory Season, Artistic Director Helgi Tomasson launched into a second premiere for the Company, Blue Rose. After hearing composer Elena Kats-Chernin's CD Ragtime and Blue, Tomasson couldn't resist. "It's fun-it has a kind of joy to it," he says, and you don't doubt him for a minute-just talking about the music brings a smile to his face." Yu may be able to read more at the SF ballet website www.sfballet.org
Unfortunately the CD seems to be available only via a UK label but it's worth waiting for - I've had it spinning every evening in the two weeks since it arrived.

Mink Jazz begins on an overly busy note, with Lee sounding noncommittal at best on a trifle called "It's a Big Wide Wonderful World." Soon, though, she finds her groove in lower-key moods ("My Silent Love") and a stack of standards she claims convincingly. Despite the 1963 album's title, though, the "jazz" element comes in by way of somewhat jive brass-and-wind interjections. But the star is in great voice, as the saying goes. This reissue adds five bonus tracks, including a previously unreleased "I'm a Fool to Want You." --Rickey Wright

PEGGY LEE AT HER BEST.......2007-05-14
THIS IS A WONDERFUL CD.I LOVE JAZZ, AND THIS IS THE CREAM OF THE CROP.
A Beautiful Trance!.......2006-09-26
Peggy Lee had a hypnotic sense of inner space. She could slow the blues down to a breathless stillness like a shimmering apparition to a dream; I'm A Fool To Want You is unforgettable. Whisper Not and Close Your Eyes are full of milk and honey swing, the trumpet of Jack Sheldon a perfect, delectable double. The overall orchestration is very satisfying with tastefully chosen instruments spotlit on several tracks. Peggy Lee was one of the few female singers who didn't incur the lashings of Billie Holiday's sharp tongue. Billie loved her and recognised Peggy's individual talent as an exception to so many of her imitaters. To emphasise the point, Mink Jazz could be seen as a counter poise to Billie Holiday's Lady In Satan, and even if this was fancifully the case, Peggy's own style shines through, thats why Billie loved her.
Mink Jazz ~ Peggy Lee.......2006-03-01
Peggy Lee has always been my favourite jazz singer, I love her silky, sultry voice. My favourite album of Peggy Lee is her "Latin Ah-La Lee" which really brings out her style and voice quality on the latin songs.
This CD album of the ever popular songs like The Lady is a Tramp, Days of Wine and Roses and many more is really a pleasure to listen to. The band accompaniment is also good and music are well arranged. The album provides a good selection of music for serious or easy listening whether during cocktail or dinner respectively.
As usual the CD quality of recording by Capitol really do justice to the album.
On my Desert Island Top 5 list.......2002-10-17
I got my first copy of this album used in the mid 70's. Since then I have probably added another 20 Peggy Lee albums to my collection trying to find something similar, but nothing I have found has come anywhere close.
This is an exquisite album. Not only Peggy's voice at her finest, both her swinging and sexy airy ballads, but some of the finest West Coast jazz players backing her from any era. Most notably on this album, Jack Sheldon plays some of the tastiest trumpet of all time, with no wasted notes and all brilliant, melodic, captivating ideas. Don't go through life without hearing this recording. It is a masterpiece.
Peggy made many brilliant albums - this is the finest of all.......2002-08-15
The very title of the album suggests quality, and that's what you get here. Peggy plundered the Great American Songbook as usual (often selecting obscure but high quality songs), adding a couple of her own songs (Where can I go without you? and I didn't find love).
Peggy was, of course, in her element on the slow, seductive songs which were her trademark - just listen to her cover of Days of wine and roses - and which make up most of this album, but what really makes this album sparkle is the variation in pace. For example, on The lady is a tramp, Peggy went uptempo, not by dramatically raising her voice (that wasn't her style), but by singing more quickly than usual. The musicianship throughout the album is masterful, yet always secondary to Peggy's lovely voice.
This is a classy album by a classy singer who is sadly missed, but who has left an outstanding legacy in the form of a whole series of brilliant albums. I believe this is the best of the lot, but not by much - there are many others which are close behind. If you haven't got any of Peggy's music, this is a great place to start - but after hearing this, you will surely be tempted to buy more.

Peggy at her best.......2006-03-26
A true live recording of the inimitable Miss Peggy Lee. (Some compensation for the disappointment of Beauty and the Beat.)Peggy at her best, interacting with the audience and responding to their appreciation.
The only full, live performance Peggy Lee ever recorded........2005-08-04
Originally recorded on Feb. 8, 1961, the last night of Peggy Lee's show at Basin Street East, this is the only complete recording of a "pure," live performance by Peggy Lee--the entire show sung exactly as Peggy performed it, with every song included, warts and all. Lost for more than thirty years in the Capitol Records vault, where it was mislabeled as a "backup" tape, it was finally discovered and released in 1995.
And what it find it was! Here is Peggy, completely relaxed and joyfully interacting with her audience, at ease with her music, her orchestra, and her fans. Showing her range of styles, she moves from a slow, soft ballad like "The Second Time Around" to full-out wailing at the end of "The Most Beautiful Man in the World," and rock/swing/soul music in a Tribute to Ray Charles. In "I'm Gonna Go Fishin,'" which she wrote with Duke Ellington, Peggy is looser and more comfortable than on her formal recordings, and one can hear her mugging with her audience through the changes in her voice, as she sings with the full orchestra. In "You've Gotta Have Heart," she sings a section in a pseudo-Spanish accent, and in her own song, "Love Being Here With You," she even jokingly interrupts herself to ask, "I wonder what I meant by that line."
This is Peggy Lee as you have never heard her before, an extraordinary find for the Peggy Lee fan. This is not to say there are no problems. At times, she wanders too far from her microphones, and the lyrics and her patter become almost impossible to hear; on other occasions, when she dramatically whispers her lyrics, she misses an occasional note. Still, her timing, her creative interpretations, and her ability to handle almost any tempo are at their peak here. This is a fantastic, once-in-a-lifetime album for the Peggy Lee fan. Mary Whipple
Moments Like This....I Love Being Here With You.......2004-06-29
It doesn't get much better than this. Terrific live recording at the legendary nite club. "The Second Time Around" is one of my favorite tunes, and no one sings it better than Peggy Lee. Ironically, I played this CD the day after Ray Charles died and was moved by Lee's early tribute. This is a very special recording.
Peggy is the Cream For my coffee!.......2001-11-20
Once again I really have nothing bad to say about Peggy.
This cd is at the top. Her timing is great. She is an icon.
If you love Peggy Lee, you will really love peggy lee
after you hear her live performance. (By the way she also had a cold during her stay at Basin St. East.) Still she was great.
Buy the cd it's a must for any Peggy Lee fan.
THANK YOU, MISS LEE...............2001-07-20
.....for getting me through a difficult time in my life. I spent a lot of 1961 in a hospital bed following a bad car accident, and this Basin Street East album was very popular that year, with many numbers being played on my bedside radio. Peggy Lee will never know how many nights she helped me forget my pain and crooned me to sleep with her sultry, sensual rendition of 'The Second Time Around.' To this day, that particular song from this album (along with her versions of 'Rain Sometimes,' 'The Folks Who Live On The Hill,' and 'The Days Of Wine and Roses,' all found on other Peggy Lee CD's) rank in my mind as the most beautiful ballads ever sung by the most beautiful voice in the world. And while she was never a 'belter' in the grand Garland style, her appearance at Basin Street East certainly proved she could delight an audience with upbeat, faster tempo numbers, too....'I Got A Man,' 'Them There Eyes,' and of course 'Fever' are all standouts. I added this live performance CD to my Peggy Lee collection (shrine?) with great reverence and the warmest of personal memories of THAT VOICE. Now if Capitol would just reissue her great 'All Aglow Again' album on CD.....so I could once again hear two of her other classic ballads, 'Where Do I Go From Here' and 'I'm Looking Out the Window'.....I might not want to die, but at least I could die happy!

My Favorite.......2007-04-23
This CD is my favorite of all of hers. All the songs are upbeat and capture the hope and sauciness of Peggy Lee. In some of her other albums her depressive side comes out, but this album is all of her best happy songs.
excellent 50s jazz vocals.......2006-04-06
I always had the preconception of Peggy Lee as being too cute and precious. Her hits of the 50s and 60s like "Hey Look Me Over" solidified this impression for me. But this cd among others, makes me re-evaluate her as an excellent jazz singer.
What other big band singer from the thirties and forties (Billie Holiday included, she always considered herself a jazz singer first) was also a first rate blues singer? Listen to Ms. Lee sing "You Don't Know Baby", a blues number, on this cd. The only problem is, it doesn't really belong with the gently swinging contents of the rest of the cd. Maybe someday Capitol/EMI will do a _Complete Peggy Lee on Capitol_ so we can evaluate all her blues and jazz work.
A really positive CD..........2005-02-25
This cd is really upbeat and features Miss Peggy Lee backed by a mighty fine orchestra setting. Lee sounds really positive singing about how great life is, how wonderful love is, and how we can be full of joy. As a Christian myself, it is great to have a jazz/lounge album like this that has such a great message all the way thru. Nothing saD and no blues or songs of brokenheartedness. An extra added bonus is getting the bonus trackFever!!!
Things ARE Swingin'.......2004-10-21
This is another "Swingin...'" cd from the late 50's Capitol catalog, like Sinatra's "Songs for Swingin' Lovers" or Deano's "This Time I'm Swingin'". It has the classic, warm '50's era Capitol stereo sound too (with the exception of "You Don't Know" and "Fever" in mono due to technical problems at the time of the recording).
Peggy Lee's voice is in great form and the song performances are wonderful, especially "It's a Wonderful World", "It's Been a Long, Long Time", "Life is for Livin'" and, of course, "Fever". It also includes two numbers she penned, the title track "Things Are Swingin'" and "It's a Good, Good Night", both of which stand up well, and in some cases better, with the other tunes. A great singer and a talented songwriter!
This is one of those cds that gets many plays in my player: no dust collecting here. It's a classic. Please Capitol, more original releases by Peggy Lee!
