While some may see Masterpiece as a Chieli Minucci solo project because of partner George Jinda's affliction with a severely incapacitating illness, Jinda's spirit - channeled by the guitarist at every turn - is unquestionably present. the album's title is not far removed from the truth. Minucci's arranging and production skills are in superb form, as he layers tracks of guitars, keyboards, and programmed sounds into an aural feast. The title track wafts in on a huge synthesizer wind, coasting along with a great solo from Minucci, whose guitar playing is compelling throughout. He does beautiful acoustic work on the graceful "Bella" and speaks with musical eloquence to his stricken friend on the moving "No More Goodbyes." "Speak to Me" floats in on a bed of LP surface noise, speaker-bouncing keyboards, and, far in the distance, Barry Danielian's atmospheric trumpet. After a piano intro that emulates ocean waves, the spare, soulful melody of "Miami" sways as firmly and delicately as a palm tree. In light of Jinda's misfortune, tunes like "No More Goodbyes" and "Hold On" (the latter, with its beautiful Armstead Christian vocal) are deeply touching. Jinda, himself, contributed two pieces, "She Will Remember" and the heartfelt "Behold." Minucci's collaborator, Tower of Power saxophonist David Mann, flows like honey on both tenor and soprano, empathically keying in to Minucci's and Jinda's vision. There are many highlights on Masterpiece, but the most startling is the spacey, dramatic "Close Encounters," with its adventurous funk rhythms and its textural echoes of Weather Report. Moldy figs who turn up their noses at the mere mention of Special EFX need to check this cut out. A strong contender for smooth-jazz disc of the year, Masterpiece wrings a special level of joy out of personal tragedy and marks a new maturity for contemporary jazz.

I bought this CD for my ballet classes and am really happy with it. It has all of the classics, and each is very true to it's original composition. There are a lot of horns, which are not my favorite, but the strings make it worth every penny!

I bought this CD to use in my classroom as listening examples. I'm not just a super big fan of some of the performances, but they are all good and for the price you can't beat it. That's why I gave it 5 stars. It's worth more than it costs by far.

This is a who's-who of great pieces of music you have heard all of your life, and never knew the names and stories! I listened to it over and over in the car and had my own concert! A friend borrowed it to add music to his Home Movies and it was perfect!

Good Music at a Great Price.......2004-03-06

I bought this CD mostly for "Entry of the Gladiators," which everyone will recognize as classic circus music. The performance on this CD (by Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops) is the best available version of Entry of the Gladiators. The rest of the CD offers mostly excerpts of classical music.

I had purchased an abundance of the "Favorites" collection and some were better than others.

This CD is at the top of them all. They may be short, but not that short. Wondrous music.

I can almost guarantee that you will like this music.
Well worth the price!

Good for the novice.......2002-06-08

The recordings on this disc are pretty good. However, the editors selected only the *loud* parts, as indicated by the title. I was pretty disappointed to find that the pieces are, in many cases, edited to reflect the most famous themes, etc, instead of including the whole work. In general, I would recommend this to the classical music novice, or someone who wants to expand their knowledge of classical music in general. Those who already are familiar with these pieces will probably feel gypped.

CD set is misnamed.......2007-06-08

They should have titled this "classical music for people who love classical music" because most of the selections are typical classical music. The title suggests it would be lively selections of "light classical" music that is more upbeat, i.e. Sabre Dance, etc. I really don't hate classical music at all and have many classical CDs in my collection but I really wanted to hear more exciting selections. I won't be purchasing any more of this set but if you like traditional classical music these are good one.

I do know it says classical music for people who hate it, but serioulsly you would have better luck never listening to classical music again. The recordings are awfull and do not do justice to any of the composers. Buy something else.

We love this set of CD's. I just got a new copy because my kids keeping taking our first copy with them so that they can listen at work or in their bedrooms but then I can never find them.

Seek better versions.......2006-12-09

If you are fairly new to classical purchases then compilation CD's can be useful for deciding what to buy next. Sometimes you only need a small taste of a piece to inspire you to buy a release with the whole performance on. The problem with this compilation however is that most of the versions are poor in performance or recording quality (or both) when compared to the best versions and the fact that the conductors aren't even credited on the track listing made me suspect that this would be the case. One of my favorite classical pieces is Tchaikovsky's 1812 festival overture but if the first CD version I had heard had been the finale excerpt that is on this compilation I may not have gone on to buy the whole thing. Luckily I heard Adrian Leaper's version first and Adrian's version is rather good.
My classical CD buying experience is limited to only a couple of dozen discs but I have found that the Naxos and Deutshe Grammophon releases are fairly safe. Avoid any release which does not name the conductors on the track listing or sleeve notes.

It Is What It Is.......2006-10-27

It's fitting that this page is fraught with the same kind of silly snobbery that turns people off from classical music (and necessitates collections like this) in the first place.

Any criticism of this compilation, which focuses on the quality of the performances or the fact that many tracks are excerpts, misses the point. This is not a collection for people who consider such things, nor does it purport to be. The idea is to package as many ultra-famous classical melodies as possible in one affordable collection and market it to people who have never purchased a classical recording. As such, top-tier performances are likely too expensive to be sold so cheaply and are unnecessary anyway. Those of us who already know and love a piece or two can forgive the compilers the inclusion of sub-par recordings, when we are exposed to so many other beautiful pieces for the first time.

It probably comes as a shock for some to hear that most people are not familiar with these classics. We may hear snippets on TV or movies, but are left with no idea as to the composer or historical context. With that in mind, it is extremely intimidating to begin buying classical. I suppose those among us, who so thoroughly dismissed the very notion of a boxed set like this, would have us begin by buying full albums by reputable interpreters. Surprisingly enough though, the majority of people would consider that a tad cost-prohibitive.

To conclude, this is a STARTER collection. It will either affirm a listener's feelings about classical music or lead to an interest in purchasing better recordings. Ideally, I suppose the interpretations would be better, but, for reasons mentioned above, that just isn't in the cards for a collection of this nature. If you're familiar with 50 different recordings of "The Ring" series, or have season tickets to the New York Philharmonic, then this probably isn't for you. For us cretins with limited foreknowledge of classical music though, it serves as a succinct introduction with little to complain about.

For those who want the most remembered passages of classical music's best-loved works, here's a package for you. On this bargain priced double-CD, you'll find music from 40 different classical composers; for the most part, the recordings excerpted here are some of the very best. Of course, you only get one Bach sampling (Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, played by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra) and one Mozart (A Little Night Music conducted by Herbert von Karajan), but this is still a nice collection--perhaps the starting point for a budding collection of classical music. This set's downfall? Unfortunately, though the liner notes discuss the evolution of classical music chronologically, the tracks are programmed in alphabetical order by composer's last name. This makes for some startling transitions! Emil Gilels's reflective performance of the Adagio from Beethoven's "Moonlight" sonata is followed by the crashing cymbals and bombast of Carmen's "March of the Toreadors," a recipe for a heart attack if there ever was one. Still, there's something here for everyone and the liner notes even explain what movies this music can be found in. A nice touch. --Jason Verlinde

Waste of money.......2006-01-12

Watch out for the volume leveling mentioned in another review. Surely the compliers could have come up with a better sort order than by composer. The change in tempo/volume between pieces makes it impossible to enjoy. My two CD's ended up in the trash.

Great Music Compilation.......2005-08-15

This is a great CD full of many songs that you will recognize and enjoy. If you are someone who likes classical music but doesn't necessarily know which songs or which composers you like, then this CD is for you. You will likely recognize many of the songs as the classical songs you would have picked out to be your favorites.

If you like classical music don't buy this CD........2005-03-11

Most of the tracks were chopped down to 3-4 minutes so some of the best parts of the compositions are missing. I don't know what I was thinking trying to buy 40 classical songs on two CD's. If you really want to enjoy the music you would do better to purchase a CD with fewer, but better quality tracks.

A must for anyone wanting the staples of classical music.......2005-02-23

In my years of experience teaching Fine Arts to high school students, I know that the majority, if not all, of the music included on this album is commonly used in collge music appreciation courses. This is an excellent sample of truly all the "greatest hits" of classical music. My students enjoy listening to the music and have later told me when take their required music apreciation courses in college that they "already know it all" because of this CD! The recordings are clear, the selections are passionate, and the listener will gain a familiarity with all of the most commonly heard classical music used in tv commercials, movies, etc.
I recommend this album, along with the boxed set, "Age of the Classics" for anyone who is interested in becoming familiar with the most famous staples of classical music.

A great compilation.......2005-02-09

This cd somes up some of the greatest pieces of instrumental (and is some cases choral) music ever written. It is a great starter for a beginning classical music lover or a quick and easy all-in-one for those of us who study classical music for a living. I highly recommend this cd to anyone who wants to love or already does love classical music.

GORGEOUS!.......2007-06-13

Wonderful intro To MEHDl ..........2006-06-08

I've always enjoyed Great Wedding music and this album is no exception, but while reading some of the customer recommendations posted on this site I discovered a group by the name of MEHDl (pronounced medie). After an online search I found their site (S00THINGMUSIC,C0M) and listened to the samples...
I was instantly blown away by the quality of this music and so I gave it a try and now that I have listened to these CDs several times I really must say that although I'm still a Tomaso Albinoni fan of, I find MEHDl to be a great addition to this CD. I had them both in my multi-disc CD player during the wedding and love the way they compliment each other. I highly recommend that you give this artist a try or atleast just go listen to the samples, I have a feeling you'll be glad you did.

Highly recommended. Even has suggestions for pre-ceremony, processional, ceremony, and recessional inside. 2 different versions of Midsummer Night's Dream march included - one with trumpet and organ and one with a full orchestra. Lots of great selections, well recorded.

I used this cd to help me plan which songs I wanted to use for each part of the wedding. This cd helps you suggest the placement for the prelude, processional, ceremony and recessional. The cd mainly has classical songs, but it does have a few of "today's" songs. There could have been a few more songs they could have added. But overall, its a good cd.

A great introduction to Baroque music..........2005-10-04

This CD contains a great sampling of Baroque music. Some of the best known songs of the period are included. Listeners will likely instantly recognize many of the songs (you've likely heard them before, you just didn't know their names). An excellent rendition of Pachelbel's Canon starts off the CD. Then plenty of music from big names such as Bach, Handel, and Vivaldi fill out the disc's 72 and a half minutes of music.

The demographics of this disc point to an intended mainstream audience. For example, the track listing includes references to which songs served as themes for television shows. For example, Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 includes the byline "Theme from 'Firing Line'" and Mouret's Rondeau says "Theme from 'Masterpiece Theater'". So this collection does represent a popular collection of Baroque songs. And it plays that role very well.

Other standout tracks include: 2 movements from Vivaldi's justifiably famous "The Four Seasons", Bach's amazing "Air on the G String" and Handel's "Xerxes". The disc includes no vocal tracks. "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" from Bach's Cantata No. 147 gets performed on a solo organ (the original has vocals and a string arrangement). So those uneasy with "classical style singing" will find no problems here.

All in all, this disc serves as a good introduction to a great period of music history. It could also serve as a starting point for selecting a favorite composer or as a guide for building a classical music collection.

Good "best of" CD, but nothing more........2001-09-27

This CD does what it says it does: it gives you a brief, excellently recorded overview of the Baroque. But remember, this is just bits and pieces of a great store of music.

This CD will whet your appetite. You'll need to buy more, after you've heard the excerts of the great works here.

The tiny, strange, and environmentally harsh Viking country of Iceland has produced some of the world's most original pop music of the past few decades, despite being inhabited by just 300,000 people. Fostered by a physical isolation from the world and temperatures that strongly encourage humans to stay inside, the nation has developed a music that tends just as much towards a light ethereality as it does jagged, experimental harshness. A great stage compilation. Singers, musicians, stage performance... all well done to represent the spirit of far, distant and chilly Iceland. Modern sound and contemporary artists singing their lungs while musicians harmoniously pulling strings and banging drums. I liked it. HOWEVER! IF YOU WERE EXPECTING A SOLO Sigur Ros album - it is not. That is a compilation of various artists and Sigur Ros are only presented in the first and last pieces.

This album is probably one of the most unique and excellent soundtracks/compilations I've ever heard. It's nice to get a mixture of lesser known Icelandic artists and well known Icelandic artists. Listening to this album makes you feel like you're getting into a one of a kind Icelandic experience. Definitely worth buying.

i wanted so badly to get to see the Screaming Masterpiece movie. and finally i did. the experience is amazing, mindblowing. just to get to see Bjork performing live pluto and all is full of love in her last 2003 world tour worth the movie ticket. everything else is a bonus track!!! and what a bonus!!!
from the start with sigur ros, then bang gang and múm... worldless... in between you discover little jewels like the amina girls and apparatt...so you leave the movie theater hoping to make your next holidays trip to iceland!. first step for most of us, poor humans, is get the ost!. you will love this songs, they are all great, original,emotional stuff. if you are about to discover what`s next after Bjork and Sigur ros, well, here`s the first step to heaven. enjoy!

This is an amazing compilation and well worth it. It will make you feel deeply and experience a high within yourself and open new closets within yourself. I didn't know what to expect of the artists I didn't know ---usually compilations scare me away even if they have some of my favorite artists on it----but I must say I like every single song (except for sugarcubes). It gives you an idea of Iceland and mixes the energy of the pieces- from high energy to low - in a way that works very well. This is a unqiue compilation- and one of the few that is worth interest in my opinion. Beautiful. And I'm at a loss for good words.

Considering that most Golden Era rap talents birthed by Dr. Dre have ridden off into the sunset--or are simply much less active and relevant in 2004--it's somewhat surprising that Snoop keeps churning out the hits like it was 1993. I think the reason people dont like this album is because its not classic Snoop. Its not even rap. The album is mostly R&B. People bought this expecting rap and they got rythm and blues. If you like R&B, then this album is dope. I think he really accomplished what he was trying to do and that is fusing hardcore rap with R&B. Personally I like the sound.

I'm not really a snoop fan but so many years have passed since his debut album and he's still around so he must be doing something right. And every now and then there would be a song of his that I would be digging and be going to myself "oh it's him again" year after year LOL drop it like it's hot was the big hit here, it was so weird that you had to love it! I think snoop and pharell's collaboration worked like a charm and became a huge hip hop hit that year, probably one of snoop's well known songs in his catalogue. Beautiful was always on the radio too and had a marvin gaye like sound to it

Okay so 1 star might seem a little harsh but this album is terrible. Believe it or not I am a fan of Snoop Dogg but this album is just garbage. Snoop Dogg's lyrics are stupid, the guest appearances are terrible, the beats are a joke, rubbish. This is what Ja Rule wishes his album was like and this is truly Snoop Dogg at his worst. Is it just me or does he just get worse with every album? Oh and while i'mn still here why does everyone think this is his best album? You'll notice that everyone who says that's favourite song is always something like Drop It Like It's Hot or Signs. If you prefer cheesy pop to quality rap than chances are you'll say this is his best album.

Just Dissappointing.......2006-09-07

Don't get me wrong i'm a big fan of Snoop but what is it with this album. I just can't believe that people could think that this is even close to Doggystyle, let alone better!!! This has got to be his furthest album from Doggystyle. Well I do like 7 tracks which are Bang Out, Ups & Downs, The Bidness, Snoop D.O. Double G, Perfect, Promise I and Oh No. But the rest of the album is totally wack!!! I mean how could someone who used to be a hardcore gangsta rapper end up making this crap. I just hope he'll do better for his upcoming album "The Blue Carpet Treatment".
By the way here are my ratings for the songs

5. Ups & Downs 10/10 Got to be my favourite song on the album. Deserved to become a single.

Wynton Marsalis may not have an easily recognizable or even particularly handsome tone, but this erstwhile jazz trumpeter is an amazing virtuoso with a fine sense of classical style. If you've never owned/heard any of his classical CDs, and you love (mostly baroque) trumpet music, this compilation--a sort of "greatest hits"--is for you. From such cruddy, sensationalistic works as Carnival of Venice to the glories of Haydn's E-Flat Concerto, this is grand entertainment. Marsalis is joined by Kathleen Battle in an exciting version of Handel's "Let the bright seraphim," and the treat there is doubled. A fine piece by Hovhaness for trumpet and organ, never before released, is another surprise. Come listen to the endless, seemingly casual roulades that come out of this guy's trumpet--they'll wake you right up. --Robert Levine

Classic Wynton is the most glorious display of musicianship I have ever heard. No other trumpet player even comes close to Wynton. Don't listen to anything the editorial review says though, it must have been written by a complete ignoramus. Wynton Marsalis not having a clear or recognizable tone? Please...That's like saying Kobe Bryant isn't a good shooter. I can't believe that garbage is on a credible site such as Amazon.

This is such a wonderful mix. I especially love the Haydn concerto finale in E flat. I was listening to this cd when my grandson (almost 3) heard the glorious music of the trumpet for the first time. He loved seeing the photos of Mr. Marsalis (which I embellished, albeit true, saying how difficult it is to play the trumpet - hence the need for a handerchief to wipe his brow in one of the photos). This awakened his awareness of trumpet music where he now loves to listen to one of his Baby Einstein cd's in the car. Specifically, he told his mother "louder" when the trumpet piece was played - repetetively.

Clark's The Prince of Denmark's March and J. Stanley's Trumpet Voluntary. Fantastic selections from Bach, Mozart, and Haydn follow, with the album also including such delightful listening as The Last Rose of Summer, Carnival of Venisee, and Flight of the Bumblebee.
