Editorial Reviews
Tim Ross, Tuba Frenzy #4
This is the best album of 1997... Strikingly convincing ethnoforgery and tasty Can-inspired rock grooving. It's a concoction that totally works. From the opening klezmer-waltz stumble to the shoutalong hallelujah-honkin' amen, there's not a near-dud in the bunch. The whole thing feels like a thrilling 40-minute ride through all of the different sections of a cool-as-shit record store.
Product Description
Utek Pahtoo Mogoi is the beautiful and the crazy, for the Klaw's fluid amalgamation of free jazz, latin-blues dirt-shake, trance beauty and 70s-ish avant-funk is a seamless, organized chaos arising from a large creative appetite. Generally, guitar 'n' drums do the on-the-nut rhythm thing and fold effortlessly into gobs of sax, trumpet, Fender Rhodes, Farfisa and still more guitar, with dashes of stracosic improv laced with ethnic smoke. The end results range from Ayler-esque honkers to wild-eyed Latin staccato lurch with Spanish lyrics to limber and incredibly catchy weirdo funk, as on the ESG and Art Ensemble of Chicago covers. A bracing and wildly entertaining 41 minute ride.
