Album Description
Very, very few players have covered King Crimson repertoire and no-one of prominence (other than The Schizoid Band and Andrew Keeling's orchestral arrangements) has attempted more than one or two pieces. There have been honourable renditions & representations but, until now, without significantly adding to my understanding of Crimson material.
The CJ3 have respectfully & irreverently taken 8 Crimson classics, repositioned them in the musical spectrum, and delivered their first Songbook with superb musicianship in service to wit & invention. I have heard, as if for the first time, Schizoid, TOAPP, Catfood, Starless, Ladies Of The Road, I Talk To The Wind, Red & Matte Kudasai.
Ian Wallace provides personal hotline & Crimson-juice authority to the Trio, although anyone unfamiliar with Ian's jazz passion & experience may be surprised by what is going on here. O for a shabby & smoke-free jazz club to sit back & savour The CJ3 in living sonic colour. O for someone to persuade Ian, Jody Nardone & Tim Landers to climb into the back of a van and travel.

Customer Reviews:
interesting first listen, but do you want to hear this again?.......2006-08-09
Being a big fan of the King Crimson material chosen for this disc and of good jazz piano (Evans, Jarrett, Tyner, Charlap, Gustavsen,....), I had high hopes. Sadly, this just doesn't work for me.
Faster tempo sections lack grit or aggression, and the quieter passages frequently descend into a Hilton lounge vibe.
Do the guys have musical chops? Certainly. And drummer Ian Wallace brings Crimson bandmate experience to the plate (the drums are the highlight of this set). I would have preferred an acoustic bass instead of the "front of the mix" electric that was chosen, but ability and instrumentation are not the problem. Soul and innovation are.
Despite an ever-changing band line up (sans Fripp, the only always-present member), King Crimson was always filled with musicians who had a lot to say and the ability to say it (even if you didn't didn't necessarily enjoy every incarnation or album).
Sadly, this CD doesn't live up to its concept. Great Crimson "standards" were chosen, but (unlike a great jazz trio tackling a stanard tune and building something new and exciting) these interpretations don't go very far.
I DO recommend checking this disc out. It's interesting to hear these pieces in a different context. The question will be whether or not you would like to hear them more than once.
Muzak for Aging Proggers.......2006-03-19
A few years ago, following the dubious success of "The Orchestral Tubular Bells" we were treated to a rapidly-descending series of lugubrious orchestrations of the music of Jethro Tull, Yes, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd (Oh, the humanity!) and several other Baby Boomer favorites. Thankfully, the trend died out as fast as it arose and elevators all over the world have gone back to "Tiny Bubbles" and "Raindrops."
Or maybe not. Is the Crimson Trio a harbinger of the next wave of bowderlization, where everything sacred is turned into Lounge Jazz this time? Can Nick the Lounge Singer, crooning "Aqualung" in airport lounges to blue-haired travelers, be far behind?
Oh the Trio is tasteful -- Landers is one hell of a bassist and Wallace is underappreciated -- but the first signs of the Apocalypse always are.
Be afraid. Be very afraid.
CONTEXT BEING THE THING.......2006-03-11
The equation is pretty simple: The Crimson Jazz Trio is to jazz somewhat less than King Crimson is to rock. But the real import here is a dramatic change of context, one that shifts the rhythmic and melodic components from an often clinical glare into a warm and generous new light. By allowing us to recognize these now familiar pieces in a completely new setting is a great way to demonstrate just how compelling, flexible and open-ended the music of King Crimson is. Even more interesting is the way in which the music of various generations of KC, each with its own distinct stylistic signature and aesthetic preoccupations, adapt to the here "standardized" jazz form.
More than an exercise, the first volume Songbook shows us that no matter what the form, interpretation is a critical aspect of making music. The interpretations here are uniformly worthwhile and exhibit the outcomes of what must have been some difficult decisions. Just consider untying the Gordian Knot that is "Starless", absent of Alexander's sword. Music such as this, with its strictly metered progressions built on razor-fine divisions and subtle, clockwork variations would seem impossible to adapt to the freer shadings of jazz. Yet, the Crimson Jazz trio accomplishes just that, to great effect.
Listening, however, proves to be equally demanding and rewarding, especially when compared to a spate of comparatively onanistic "mash-ups" of the original work. Anyone interested in music and its seemingly infinite pliability and potential should spend time with this Songbook.
Excellent Prog-Rock Interpretations for Jazzy but not Jazz Piano Trio.......2006-03-05
This disc is almost an instant classic, give or take a few minor reservations. Exceeded all my expectations that's for sure.
Landers & Wallace need no introduction but it is the unknown Nardone who is the revelation here. He's unfailingly tasteful in the slower and medium-tempo sections, really catching the immortal spirit of classic KC but he also tends to overplay and overstate and bang on the keyboards and take the song through some sort of climax, unnecessarily ruining his own extended state of grace, apparently thinking he has to do this just because this is the mighty King Crimson after all that they're interpreting and a bit of loudness and 'rocking out' is called for! Not so. By riding out the entire song in a perfect state of understated balance which is what cool jazz is all about and with fresh inventiveness each step of the way, he creates a masterpiece whereas whenever he bangs on the keyboards he creates only annoyance since no piano can match the power of Fripp's guitar.
That criticism aside, the great thing about Nardone is that when he's flying improv he's flying strictly with the 'beyond' feel or 'transcendent' feel of a tune, the mysterious spirit that makes it great and he's all about that 100% and where that takes him and not at all tied into a jazz idiom. In other words, if Keith Jarrett or Chick Corea or Herbie Hancock improvised on these same tunes, it would sound too jazzy and they would take a jazz approach and subordinate the feel of the tune to the jazz approach which tends towards homogeneity. Not Nardone, he takes the improv approach but leaves the jazz patterns or feel out because it would take away from the superior classic KC feel. The Jazz or be-bop derived style of playing with its established patterns of approach has been run down into the ground by hundreds of players over the years so it's great to hear a guy who likes the freedom of improvisation but likes the transcendence prog aims at at its best better than the very different type of transcendence jazz tries for. You could say that this is cool-jazz played with equal parts cool-jazz spirit & prog-rock imagination but without any be-bop dervied stuff thrown in that you hear in all standard jazz albums from Pat Metheny to Keith Jarrett.
Excellent job recording the CD as well, super-thick very nice piano sound, a killer deep electric bass that stands in for an upright and the classic Wallace drum tone.
Great CD! Bring on Volume 2.......2006-03-03
While this is not officially King Crimson, it's definitely a must for any Crimson fan. This is even a great jazz CD for those who aren't (yet) fans of KC. I really enjoy the very melodic fretless bass guitar. I definitely hope they stay together and record a Volume 2. I'd love to hear some more arrangements from the '80s Fripp/Belew/Bruford/Levin line up as well as the '90s Double Trio.

Amazon.com essential recording
Pianist Keith Jarrett has paid all sorts of tributes through his career, nodding to Ornette Coleman, Miles Davis, and Bill Evans. But on this two-CD set, Jarrett picks particular versions of tunes to play off. So he pays homage to Lee Konitz on "Lover Man" and Sonny Rollins on "All the Things You Are." His formula for the tributes makes the music surprisingly engaged, dropping lyrical twists in his nod to Anita O'Day and cool loops when tipping Jim Hall. Where some of the so-called Standards Trio recordings veer into impressionism without regard to direction, this collection maintains tempered balance, even finding a classic Jarrett groove on "Sun Prayer," which drummer Jack DeJohnnette drives with a taut rhythmic clip. Alas, the tune fades in the groove's midst. But the package is barely any less strong for the fade and, in fact, stands above most of the other standards recordings. --Andrew Bartlett
Customer Reviews:
4 and 1/2 stars.......2006-08-10
This 2CD set is recorded live on Oct. 15, 1989 at Koln. KJ does groan a bit too much in maybe 2,3 of the songs, but it's not particularly bad comparing to his other albums. This is a beautiful album and for some reason, it seems to me that Jack DeJohnette's drum is particularly hot and sweet that day. I also love the ending "U Dance" very much, really groovy. My only complain is, the audience applause in "All the things you are" (around 2 min into the play) sounds a little weird. It's like it's added in later (?)
Thanks.......2003-03-17
Hey I wanted to thank the editor for including "Tribute" among the essential Keith Jarrett CDs and for the hearty recommendations from the rest of the contributors. It's beautiful. I especially enjoy "U Dance". Thanks for helping me add this to my collection!
Oververbalizations.......2001-07-19
I rate this double album 4 stars only because it has the greatest amount of Keith's moaning and groaning. And it really bothers me. Other than that, this is one of the best sets of the prodigious trio.
Classic Jarrett -- great standards, great non-standards........1999-05-14
From standards such as "All the Things You Are" through the strangely moving "Ballad of the Sad Young Men" to the joyous "U Dance," this is the best jazz CD Jarrett has released, for my money.

Manhattan-born pianist Rachel Z regards veteran saxophonist Wayne Shorter as a genius, whose music "creates a glimpse into the mystical beauty and nature of life" and offers a "reflection of the life condition of enlightenment and love." Z, the disciple, honors her teacher lovingly and imaginatively on this straight-ahead tribute to Shorter's talents as a composer. Z, whose approach to classical studies at age 15 was transformed when she heard Shorter's music on Miles Smiles, was recruited by Shorter to handle orchestrations for his Grammy-winning 1995 contemporary jazz release, High Life. Here, Z addresses 11 of Shorter's works in a trio setting, joined by bassist Miriam Sullivan (whose credits include work with Wynton Marsalis and Lionel Hampton) and drummer Allison Miller. Recorded on two-track, their approach is refreshingly spare, earnest, and spirited, making lasting lyrical impressions with their winning interpretations of "Black Nile," "Three Marias," and a sagaciously swinging "Witch Hunt." A night-and-day departure from her smooth-jazz disc Love Is the Power, On the Milky Way Express has such intelligent playing that it's simultaneously serene and alert, a lesson in composition taught by Shorter and clearly absorbed by his student. --Terry Wood
Customer Reviews:
purely magic!.......2001-11-13
I saw rachel z trio on 22 dec. 2000 at "AlexanderPlatz" in rome,
and bought the disc from her at the end of the concert.
No way i would have gone home without it!!!
I remember she told me that allison (drums) felt a little sick so she wasn't at her best, and i thought, "Oh my god, can she play even better than this ?".
great drum work by allison (interesting rhythms and very nice work on those cymbals).
pure magic from rachel,
You can easily hear how much she loves Wayne Shorter's music,
and i think i hear clasical influences too.
I'm just waiting for a chance to enjoy once more rachel and her trio in concert, meanwhile i spoile my self with the album.
Truly a work of art.

A Really pleasnt surprise.......2001-03-07
I first saw Rachel Z playing with Wayne Shorter and was impressed, her first album I found dull. So I wasn't expecting much with this album, but it really swings and the gentler setting of the piano trio shows off the beauty of the compositions. I can't wait for her versions of his electric stuff.
Happy, smiling, and Wow!.......2001-03-04
I first heard Rachel Z on KPLU 88.5FM in Seattle and scrammbled to write down the name when I first heard it! Fresh, invigorating, reminded me of some of the Pat Metheny "trio" works, and Pat Metheny Group in general (minus synths, effects). My feelings were of happiness, joy, and the desire to tell others of a wonderful new Jazz trio I had heard. If Jazz makes you happy, makes you want to explore the world, sing, play, and generally be thankful...Wow, this is a CD to get. These women ROCK (JAZZ?)! Gonna find a ticket to their local gig as soon as can. In short, thank you Rachel Z (and your group). Ahimsa.
A Promising Release.......2000-11-23
This trio of young jazz artists has put forward a promising and enjoyable work. For the most part, Rachel's take on the material comes across as fluid and thoughtful. The disc is highly complimented by the competent and expressive drumming of Allison Miller. The performances sound better and better with each listen.
Best tribute album ever.......2000-10-30
I once mistook Rachel Z for (yet another) Smooth Jazz artist and I had to take it back when I heard this CD. She has totally demonstrated her playing skills (already present on the Vertu album) and great mastery in arrangements. For instance, her version of "El Gaucho" is quite a delight. The same applies for "the Three Marias", mixing fluidity and rythm. The trio works well though I would enjoyed more solos from the side girls. Anyway, Wayne Shorter's masterpieces are so numerous that a second volume including "Speak no Evil" or "Juju" could easily be released.

Album Description
"Tribute To Hendrix", the latest disc for Swedish blues/rock heavy guitar legend CLAS YNGSTROM (founder & leader of SKY HIGH), is an awesome "musical tribute" to the father of heavy guitar, JIMI HENDRIX. Recorded live in Stockholm, Sweden in March - 2003, "Tribute To Hendrix" features 10 trax of mind-bending, intense, breath taking, tremendously organic, retro-70's bluesy heavy guitar power trio riffage from one of the best "hendrixy" guitarists in the world. Recorded exclusively for GROOVEYARD RECORDS, a new label dedicated to outstanding TOTAL GUITAR from around the globe.
On "Tribute To Hendrix", CLAS "SKY HIGH" YNGSTROM digs deep into the "outskirts of infinity" and grooves heavily through an awesome set of classic killer HENDRIX jams with his outstanding trio, complete with a super-sonic way-kool "BAND OF GYPSIES" vibe. The CLAS YNGSTROM TRIO effortlessly "rip & tear" through all the familiar HENDRIX musical territory with CLAS YNGSTROM laying down the heavy guitar law and legitimately paying tribute to "THE MAN" (HENDRIX). Clas Yngstrom gets down hard on every track throughout the "Tribute To Hendrix" disc and his guitar playing is pure rock genius. He reaches levels on the guitar that most guitarists could never attain in a lifetime of playing.
The CLAS YNGSTROM TRIO: "tribute to hendrix" disc is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED to fans of JIMI HENDRIX and all his awesome musical sonic splendor, and to fans of SKY HIGH, ROBIN TROWER, FRANK MARINO, ERIC GALES, RANDY HANSEN, ERIC JOHNSON, MICHAEL LANDAU, etc. including fans of any killer top-shelf "over-the-top" hendrixy heavy guitar music that surrounds us.
"Tribute To Hendrix" is phat and sassy, featuring a mountain of mind-blowing Hendrixy improvisational fury. "Tribute To Hendrix" is a timeless, profound piece of heavy guitar history from one of the best Hendrix-inspired guitarists in the world or, in this case, the "third stone from the sun." Somewhere beyond the "outskirts of infinity" JIMI is smiling.
Long live the musical spirit of JIMI HENDRIX.
Customer Reviews:
The best Hendrix interpreter in the world!.......2006-06-18
This is the man showing his thing. Yngstrom has been at it for many years. He's had great reviews from as an example Mitch Mitchell.
If You like Jimi Hendrix this is a must have.
Awesome Live Hendrix Tribute Disc - Amazing Guitarist Does Jimi Proud........2006-01-28
Phenomenal live Hendrix tribute disc from Sweden's top blues/rock axeslinger. Clas Yngstrom from SKY HIGH is one of the BEST Hendrix-inspired guitar slingers on the 3rd stone from the sun. The last review from HANS D. HARMS is a TOTAL joke. This
HANS D. HARMS character who spends his time on Amazon.com slamming discs with negative reviews is a complete idiot with wax in his ears who doesn't know what time of day it is when it comes down to REAL guitar music. The bottom line is that CLAS YNGSTROM is the REAL deal on the guitar and he does JIMI's awesome music PROUD on the awesome TRIBUTE TO HENDRIX disc. (((LONG LIVE THE MUSICAL SPIRIT OF JIMI HENDRIX))).
LOVE HENDRIX AND HIS MUSIK....BUT.................2004-12-15
This is a good live CD by a guitarist who can immitate HENDRIX to a T and most probably plays the material as well or better than HENDRIX was able to on even his best nights.
I own a number of HENDRIX bootlegs and he was not always at his peak LIVE ( maybe too high or not in the mood --- whatever ) but when he was hot, there was noone better.
The main question I have is, WHY??????? None of the songs benefit from CLAS's playing as he sticks like glue to the originals and adds nothing of his own ( or very little ). Why you would play these fairly pale copies when the originals are still available and almost impossible to improve upon, beats me.
I was hoping for an awesome guitarist that could take HENDRIX's musik and add his own signature ( JEAN PAUL BOURELLY / CRAIG ERICKSON ) as well as do justice to JIMI's legacy. I guess I was expecting too much, because this is not it.

A Must-Have for all lovers of funky jazz and/or Jimi Hendrix.......2004-06-24
Take three outstanding musicians, give them some great Jimi Hendrix tunes as a starting point, and then simmer and cook until done!
This record is terrific, and unlike anything you've ever heard before. The funky organ sounds of Dr. Lonnie Smith (remember, he is *not* the same guy as Lonnie Liston Smith), the jazz-rock jamming guitar sounds of John Abercrombie (who sounds here like he is channeling a mix of Hendrix, Carlos Santana and John McLaughlin)and the funky, always-on-it drums of Smitty Smith. Each song is about 10-12 minutes in length, so if you're looking for breezy, short rock tunes, don't buy this record. But for everyone else, give a listen!
Great album -- smooth jazz improv. with a hint of Hendrix.......1998-11-16
This album is basically the result of three great jazz musicians playing interpretations of famous Hendrix songs. Although none of the songs sound exacly like the Hendrix versions (they weren't meant to), the basic grooves are still there. All of the misicians are incredible, and the sounds they create are beautiful -- from the smooth sound of the guitar, to the brash sound of the Hammond B-3 through a distorted leslie speaker (and not to mention a strong percussion backing). I do not generally listen to jazz music, but I love this album, and I think other Hendrix/Lonnie Smith Trio fans will to. (The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because of the length of the songs -- all four songs are about ten minutes long, but other people may not mind long songs).

Album Description
Kahil was a stone cold jazz baby for sure, but youngblood didn't become a jazz-warrior-for-life until a friend took him to see the Art Ensemble of Chicago in early 1967. AEC bassist Malachi Maghoustut Favors left him starry-eyed and dreaming. Inspired, 14-year old Kahil began hand drum and trap drum studies. In early '86, Kahil El'Zabar pulled his Genius Move: the Ritual Trio (original members: Lester Bowie and Malachi Favors). Favors passed away in Chicago on January 30, 2004. For Kahil, the loss cut deeply. "I started playing with him when I was 16-years old and I worked with him til I was 52," muses Kahil. On December 18, 2004, Kahil and a revamped Trio recorded the Delmark DVD/CD "Ritual Trio Live at the River East Arts Center". A mere two days later, December 20, 2004, the same aggregation went into the studio to record "Big M, A Tribute To Malachi Favors".

Customer Reviews:
A Stellar Performance.......2006-08-05
On the 'Live in Samois' recording, The Rosenberg Trio once again proves their pre-eminence as the world's greatest gypsy swing guitar ensemble. From the opening bars of the standard "Rose Room", the group establishes a comfort zone by presenting this standard with all its melodic beauty. But then some forty seconds later something remarkable happens. Lead guitarist Stochelo Rosenberg begins to take this old reliable jazz number off the ground and it never again lands until the final chords fade away. This first tune is only a hint of what is to follow. With varying degrees of speed, nuance, playfulness and poignancy Rosenberg, his brother Nonnie (bass) and his cousin Nous'che (rhythm guitar) simply dazzle. Lead lines of a complexity and speed that would take other gifted guitarists a week to master erupt out of Stochelo only to be followed by others even more sensitive or intricate. Behind these brilliant lead treatments the sixteen tunes come to life and their pulse is provided by a flawless rhythm section--Nous'che plays harder and faster than any other rhythm player you'll find out there today and Nonnie's remarkably nimble backbeat on upright bass at times matches his brother's soloing note-for-note. As an introduction to the Rosenberg Trio, this CD is unsurpassed (its resultant DVD allows many amazed listeners the chance to see that there is actually only one bass and only two guitars playing--because it always sounds like more). However, this CD is not for the faint of ear: there is more music played in this hour than many other artists play in a year.
'Live in Samois' is a tasteful and wonderous concert for fans of the Django Reinhardt--Hot Club of France style of jazz. The late master himself would love the treatment given to seven of his own tunes. Highly recommended, if at least only as an example of how a guitar can be shown off as an instrument equal to any other in the world.
After the final strains of the encore number "It Don't Mean a Thing" pass into memory, one is reminded that Stochelo Rosenberg at the time of this recording was only 35 years old, and a brighter future for a musician is rarely so evident. He is undoubtedly one of the finest guitarists in the world, and arguably may already be the best. You decide. Pick any of the tunes from this CD and it will become obvious. And if you're already a guitarist, I defy you to keep your hands and feet still. Enjoy!
