5 out of 5 stars Expensive? Yes,but what a terrific masterpiece !!!!.......2004-01-29

Of course, you can think of waiting for a cheaper reissue of this legendary album. After all, $ 36 is a great amount for a record.
But if you only knew what's in this CD,and you're a real lover of the Bean and the Pres, you'll be ready to spend a hundred bucks for the treasures this record includes.
Here are surely some of the most magnificent tracks by the Bean,Coleman Hawkins (1904-1969),the "Armstrong" of tenor sax,the man who happened to be the first genius on his instrument, and maybe the greatest one with Pres.Bean's tracks on this CD include some of the most somptuous and essential tenor sax playing of all times.Backed by Eddie Heywood and Ellis Larkins, piano,Oscar Pettiford on bass,Bill Coleman on trumpet,Al Casey on guitar,Andy Fitzgerald on clarinet and....a very young Shelly Manne on drums (who obviously listened a lot to Jo Jones and Jimmy Crawford),the music distilled by Hawk's tenor sax will surely make you cry or go completely mad.His choruses on "the man I love","sweet Lorraine","Voodte" or "how deep is the ocean" are some of the most magnificent ever blown. What a majesty!!! He's at the highest level ever reached on this instrument.Full of musical ideas, with a perfect construction of his solos, his warmth, tenderness, and violence make him reach the stars. The four tunes I mentionned before are no less than some of the most essential tracks ever recorded in jazz.Just as beautiful as Armstrong's "west end blues" or "two deuces",or Trane's "Alabama",or Billie's "love me or leave me".Just Beauty. There's no tenor sax player who ever blew that way, with so much love and so much violence at the same time ("the man I love"),except Trane and Rollins.
Now,about the Pres: I must confess that, even if Lester Young (1909-1959) is my favorite jazz player, before Trane,Tatum,Waller,Armstrong,Monk or even Duke,he is surpassed in this album by the Bean.Don't think that his music here isn't interesting,it's a real treasure. The band is a real dream:Lester,Bill Coleman,tp,the very great Dickie Wells, one of the few magicians on trombone with Joe Nanton,Ellis Larkins,p,Al Hall,b,the Master,Freddie Greene on guitar, and the Greatest of all jazz drummers,Jo Jones. The tunes have that typical Kansas City feeling.Bill Coleman, one of my favorite trumpet players has great moments here.Jo Jones' support is outstanding.Lester is great, but just great, that means miles and miles away from most of other players, but not at his highest level. But definitely, the Bean beats him here.Even if Pres blows extraordinary things on "I got rhythm" or "linger awhile".
Now,it's nice and reasonnable to write about the bosses, but listening to such an important album, you have to remind that there are not only two stars here, but a dozen one.Dickie Wells for example, one of the greatest trombone players, who blows magnificently on "I'm fer it too";Bill Coleman,Eddie Heywood,Ellis Larkins,Manne and Jones,Pettiford. All of this men belong to the Hall of Fame of jazz;and this record is a perfect way to meet them. Here is a highlight in my collection of records, and I hope it will become one in yours !!!
