Editorial Reviews
From Grove Press Guide to Blues on CD
Parker earned his reputation among R&B insiders playing alto saxophone with James Brown off and on for twenty years, and almost no one figured the sideman deluxe would one day enjoy mainstream acclaim as a bandleader in his own right. This best-selling album produces pleasure with its funk-sauce and soul-stew grooves, but Parker is not low-down or burly enough to be the new King Curtis (as if that were possible), and his 'soul" doesn't run as deep as that O{ say, lesser- known saxophonists Hank Crawford, Arnold Sterling, or Houston Person. Replace Don Pullen's Hammond organ with some studio hack's electric piano and already marginal songs 'Over the Rainbow" and 'Children's World" would be excruciatingly cloying. -- © Frank John Hadley 1993

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-05-08

I first heard some of these cuts on college radio I believe. Its a very nice jazz album. My first time hearing Maceo. There are some lively cuts, and some mellowed out smoove stuff. The album has songs on it that are quite different from each other but all share a similar vein. I have owned this for many years and I still like it a lot.

This CD is just as good as the rest of the 5 star albums. Maceo delivers as well as the rest of the crew. A sure winner for anyone who wants some great music and anyone who just wants to feel the power of one the greatest sax player of all time.

5 out of 5 stars Can You Dig It?.......2000-04-23

There is a concept here, and those people who get hung up on issues involving pleasure and morality are sure to miss the full richness of this album. A few of these songs were familiar to me before I heard the versions available in this set. Putting all these songs together blew me away, and the amount of confusion revealed in the bye-bye take of "Seeds & Stems (Again)" at the end made me buy another CD, called The Best of Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen "Too Much Fun" to see if the live version there was as loose as this is. Now there is no doubt in my mind that this captures the feeling, there is no there there, better than anything.
