Dave Nathan, All Music Guide
Janis Mann is one of the most authentic and pure jazz voices working today.

Product Description
When it comes to jazz singing, what separates the women from the girls is being able to tap into life experiences to connect emotionally with a song. This ability, plus the artistry to convey those feelings to the audience, distinguish such great singers as Carmen McRae and Shirley Horn. In her fourth CD, Janis Mann, an admirer of both these vocalists, demonstrates once again that she too can touch the heart with her voice.

Supported by a stellar trio: Larry Fuller, the late Ray Brown's most recent pianist; world-class bassist Doug Miller; and renowned drummer Clarence Acox, Janis Mann brings a mature sensibility to this tasteful collection of songs. With her wide range, flawless intonation and full-bodied voice, the Seattle-based singer gives a masterful reading of some of our most cherished standards along with some lesser known gems.

The band members obviously enjoy each other's solos and there's genuine musical conversation and frequently witty repartee in these songs. You can hear the mutual inspiration between singer and trio and they soar as an ensemble. The weaving of various Latin rhythms throughout the mix gives the disc a voice and cohesiveness that enraptures the listener throughout ."Let It Happen" is an exciting and moving presentation that will please not only jazz lovers but anyone who appreciates great music.

4 out of 5 stars Well worth the price.......2006-04-13

I love this CD. No, despite its name it is not the "ultimate" collection, as scarcely could be expected from a single CD. It is heavy on Mikado, as others have stated. It leaves out things I would have included and includes things I would have left out. But the performances are wonderful, traditional and all you expect from G&S. Considering the low price, it is well worth including in your G&S collection ... as PART of your collection. After the disappointment of the godawful Opera World video series (Don't buy it!) this CD is a joy and a relief.

3 out of 5 stars Not Exactly "The Ultimate" Collection..........2004-12-23

It seems that a collection of Gilbert & Sullivan music that has the name "The Ultimate Collection" in its title would boast a wide range of music, but I found the selection disappointing. Half of the tracks are songs from The Mikado, and the other half is divided between five... yes, FIVE other operettas. This means that the representation from each operetta is awfully scant. I would have liked to see less Mikado and more of everything else, and perhaps some highlights from the more obscure operettas (Princess Ida and The Sorcerer, namely).

In addition, while most of the music is very well performed, some of the vocalists either go a bit overboard or, at the very opposite end, seem to lack expression. For example, this Nanki-Poo (in The Mikado) seems to be overly occupied with vibrato. Katisha's voice is annoying, and The Mikado's low voice often seems to lack feeling and humor. The other idiosyncracies, like the very frightening evil laughing during "A More Humane Mikado" and hissing during "Three Little Maids" really bug me.

Then again, I'm new to Gilbert and Sullivan, and was introduced to the music through the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, which has a noticeably less operatic style, and hardly includes "stage noise"... so perhaps all this is the norm. Do listen to the tracks for yourself, though, before you purchase the CD. Personally, I find that the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, while considerably less ecompassing, is much lighthearted and easier listening.

2 out of 5 stars Where's the chicks?!?!.......2003-05-15

It wouldn't be G&S if not for the ladies - so where are they? How could they leave out Mabel's aria - or Josephine's!? The only female aria included on this disc comes from Mikado, which is the least exciting (if G&S could be un-exciting) of the three! Everything else on the recording is great, but I am still quite disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Not quite the ultimate...........2002-03-25

This is a great collection, but unfortunately it doesn't have songs from all the works of G&S. Most notably, there is nothing from the "Yeoman of the Guard". I still reccommed it however as John Reed is wonderful!!

4 out of 5 stars Great Music - Questionable Selection.......2002-02-05

It's an ongoing challenge to find a recording of Gilbert and Sullivan that combines premium musicality and great theatrical performance. This recording is a true gem on both fronts. My only complaint is that for a "Best of" collection, this compilation is Mikado-heavy and scarcely touches on highlights from other masterpieces, particularly The Pirates of Penzance. This would be my favorite G&S CD of all time, of only it included tracks like "When the Foeman Bares his Steel," "Poor Wand'ring One," and "Dry the Glist'ning Tear," but then again, I guess there's no real consensus as to which are Gilbert and Sullivan's best works, and there are too many to fit on one CD.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Re-Release.......2007-06-11

If you don't have Let It Happen already BUY THIS NOW. If you do have Let It Happen already BUY THIS NOW. All three of the new songs are brilliant, great rocking tracks that put everything off of "Let's Rock" to shame. This has all the original songs off of Let It Happen, AND includes a DVD with all the band's music videos. This is a must have, and a great deal for the price.

4 out of 5 stars If this is their leftovers, I can only imagine how great their A-list material is.......2007-02-15

The Good
Let's face it; punk rock isn't exactly about musical structure. Any one who's listened to one punk album knows that the progressions are constructed of 3 or four chord changes are varying speeds. What makes really makes good punk rock is the impactful lyrics. In addition to good lyrics, I personally prefer melodic vocals. A rarity for this particular genre. Fortunately for MxPx, they have both. And this is their B-material!

When you compare the three new tracks "Role Modeling," "Prozac," and "Your Turn" to the older tracks on the album, you can hear the advancements in the group's musicianship and quality. That's not to say the older stuff doesn't have its merits. "Never Learn" is probably every guy's theme song as we all contemplate why we are with women that treat us like [..] and continue to go back to that type. "Sick Boy" employs a punk trademark with lots of ooohs and ahhhs. The group spices up the 1950s classic "Oh Donna" with drum beats that players back then never dreamed of.

Although I haven't figured out what "GSF" stands for, I can relate to the heartbreak and girlfriend frustrations. "Rock & Roll Girl" is just a straight-up, chugga-chugga party song. Vocalist Mike Herrera prefaces "Lifetime and Enlightenment" with `this is a yelling song.' He ain't kidding. The quick change in riffage, from punk to thrash, was quite a pleasant surprise. "Honest Answers" is just as forceful as our desire to get them. "Biased Bigotry" takes a stab at a social issue we all can relate too. The demo versions of "Twisted Words," "Suggestion Box," and "Too Much Thinking" aren't as rough as you would expect.

The DVD portion of this deluxe release gives you chance to sample some of the bands album tracks. While I thought they all twelve videos were entertaining, I think they are something more suited for longtime fans, rather than casual listeners. It was comforting to see that the group put effort into their video concepts, rather than rolling out live performance videos.

The Bad
Liner notes would have been cool.

The Verdict
Celebration or cashing in on the past? That's for you to decide. Otherwise, MxPx deliver classic punk rock sounds combined with thought-provoking lyrics and melodic vocals. If this is their leftovers, I can only imagine how great their A-list material is.

3 out of 5 stars Great band, but does NOT need to release every single song they've written..........2006-12-02

I normally shy away from all of these unnecessary re-issues of albums that have been popping up these past two years (it's become an epidemic; nobody really needs a re-issue of an album that was originally released a year or less ago). But, because I like MxPx, and because of the additional DVD, I decided to grab it.

I give it 3 stars: one star for the three new songs ("Your Turn" is my favorite of these), one star for the cheap price (fifteen bucks for 2 discs ain't bad), and one star for the DVD, which features all twelve of MxPx's music videos.

Of course, I still have a few bones to pick with the boys of Bremerton with this release, so here goes:

The advertisements for LIH:DE boasts an updated booklet with rare photos dating up to 2006. It's not all that great. Essentially, it's the same photos from the original LIH booklet, with about 5 or 6 new pics, all from the PANIC tour. Big deal.

The remixing of the tracks previously available on the original LIH is, in my opinion, pretty awful and certainly too bass-happy. A note to all bands who want to "up" the levels of their decade-old recordings so they fit alongside the quality of their newer stuff: LOUDER IS NOT ALWAYS BETTER.

Unless you're a die-hard MxPx fan, you're not gonna be too thrilled with the tracks on either version of LIH. A ton of two-minute, identical, pseudo-hardcore punk songs run rampant here, with only a few true keepers. In fact, some of MxPx's best early stuff, which was available on the original LIH, aren't even on the re-issue! What happened to "Move To Bremerton", "Chick Magnet", "Christalena", and the regular version of "Want Ad"? And why have they been replaced with unreleased demos and hardcore-ish songs that should have STAYED unreleased? It's a mystery to me, because MxPx is way more capable of doing better stuff than what makes up the majority of LIH:DE.

And this leads into my biggest question of all, which is more about the band than the album: What's up with all the releases?

MxPx, in the past few years, seem to have become a band who feels that every single song they write NEEDS to be recorded and released. In three years, they've put out four albums: BEFORE EVERYTHING AND AFTER, PANIC, LET'S ROCK, and LIH:DE. And between those four releases, it's the same story: a few killer cuts, and a lot of duds. LIH:DE is the worst of these, due to all of the identical material that were obviously filler that was written in-between all the good stuff (PANIC is the best of these four, with only a few so-so tracks floating around).

Luckily, the DVD saves LIH:DE, and you can argue that the fifteen dollar price tag is actually just for the DVD (hey, that's pretty cheap for a music video DVD nowadays).

So, you may as well go out and get LIH:DE for the few good songs and the DVD (although, again, I'd recommend PANIC instead). Or, for those who dread the "skip track" button on their CD players, just slap together the following mix, which I compiled using all of the gems from both versions of LIH:

MXPX - "LET IT HAPPEN... IN SMALLER DOSES."

1. Role Remodeling

4 out of 5 stars Music for the baby!.......2006-10-14

I am the caregiver for my newborn grandson who is VERY VERY fussy. There are all kinds of CDs with soothing music for the babies, BUT I happened to hear that opera was a great listen for the little ears and this one is the best. It has high voices and very low bass voices lots of BOOMs and arias. When I first put it on for him, (in the middle of a loud cry), he quieted down almost as soon as the first stanza was over. He now smiles and waves his little arms and legs around when I turn it on. He Listens and loves this CD, and so do I! The words are hard to understand but the sounds are marvelous. If you know of any mother/father who is wanting music for a small baby/child, tell them about Gilbert and Sullivan (and they will enjoy it, too).

1 out of 5 stars Unlistenable.......2005-11-11

The voices are wonderful, but the recording is so faulty that only the two tracks from Iolanthe sound at all okay. At first I thought it was my equipment, then realized that the CD was at fault. And I bought one for myself and one for a friend! I adore Gilbert & Sullivan and D'Oyly Carte is the best, but this particular CD shouldn't be offered for sale.

5 out of 5 stars THIS is music . . ........2005-07-21

. . . not rap, not rock, not pop. Light opera! I love Arthur Sullivan's music, even though I'm 11, and I love this CD! The tunes are really catchy, and I'm usually singing one to myself. Not many people my age like light opera, but to me, it's the best music there is. Don't be afraid that you won't like this CD. You'll love it, even though it's hard to understand at sometimes. You might want to listen to some of the songs first to see if you like it. After all, not everyone likes opera.

5 out of 5 stars A Surefire Method of Loosing the Blues.......2000-03-03

This recording, done in a studio, allows the listener to "hear" all the words of all the patter songs. John Reed is just excellent as Koko, the Modern Major General, the Monarch of the Sea. Highlights come from Iolanthe, HMS Pinefore, Yeomen, Mikado, Gondoliers. A truly wonderful experience to be enjoyed over and over.

As obligatory as the greatest-hits package and tribute record for the retiring veteran artist is the rarities compilation for new artists moving from the underground to mainstream record-buying consciousness. That said, Let It Happen, a collection of B-sides recorded by MxPx for Tooth and Nail Records before the band was signed away to A&M, comes off as a much stronger record than a simple attempt to cash in on a departing band. And, given that it contains 32 songs--clocking in at nearly 72 minutes--the value is certainly good, too. But the real strength of the CD lies in the short, aggressive, and unbelievably catchy pop-punk tunes MxPx churned out in spades. The songs they relegated as B-side material actually make for one of MxPx's more satisfying albums. And though these songs come from many different sessions stretched out over three years, the disc is surprisingly cohesive, thanks in no small part to new mixes by longtime MxPx producer Steve Kravac, whose sonic fairy dusting gives these tracks a Hüsker Dü-like roar. --Bradley S. Caviness

4 out of 5 stars I don't care if you call me lame.......2006-04-13

Okay I hadn't listened to this album for three years and one day whilst putting old cd's on my beloved ipod I came across this. My body told me no, for it is MXPX a crybaby band. But my mind gave me reason, for I had enjoyed this cd in my younger years and unfairly turned my back on it. So I said screw it and put it on the ol' pod. So later I'm in my car and I'm like screw it let's see if I still can get down with this and as if it was magic I played the first song and still rememered the chorus and everything! So I rolled down the windows and shouted them out and got busy. So yeah this is a great cd, it's some really catchy fun pop punk and it's... I dunno it's just good. This was back when bands actually you know, had fun and made ALBUMS instead of concepts each time they hit the studio. I'm sorry but lately it's been quite a sad state of affiars. So this stands the test of time, sure the Small Town Small Mind 7" was poored incredably poorly and some of the tracks are real dogs (like that damn Elvis is Dead son) but it's great. Think about those songs you loved in high school, GSF, Swing Set Girl, Never Learn, Sick Boy and such. If they ever made an infomertial for this cd it'd star with something like this:
"Do you remeber your high school days? Such times when the only true friend you had was your cd collection and handful of crappy 7 inches? Well my friend let me show you a product that will bring back those bittersweet moments..."

5 out of 5 stars MxPx Let It Happen.......2006-02-28

This is the perfect MxPx album. In fact, the perfect punk rock album. It's a really weirdly put together compilation that makes you wonder what the heck Tooth and Nail was thinking -- it's part original songs, part greatest hits, part b-sides/demos -- but it's the best thing these guys have ever released.

Compared to their normal albums, which are decidely pop-punk, this one is practically retro 80's hardcore. The drumming is faster (2/2 time in most places), the singing is less Green Day-whiney and includes more screaming (in a good way), the lyrics are funnier, and the guitar is much more metal-y (think Suicidal Tendencies). At the same time, the tight harmonies on here are worthy of the Beach Boys or The Ramones. This is classic SoCal punk on par with Social D or Bad Religion. MxPx's regular albums are pretty good and are starting to grow on me, but even the awesome Life In General was a disappointment compared to Let It Happen. What happened to the "drive a girl CRAAAY-ZYYY!!" scream in "Chick Magnet"??

Buy this CD now.

All you MxPx fans out there get this cd!!! I knoe it may not "Be Their Best" or it may Not "Rock On!" but it is just a great cd to start with or to end with! This cd has 32 songs including "Let It Happen", "Move To Bremerton", "Chick Magnet" and "Sick Boy"! This album i longer then thier other albums ( Time about 1 and 1/2 hours)! I love this album and all u slow rong/ punkers will love it! But people who like MxPx's more punky/ yelling form may not like it but it is a great cd to add to your collection and I listen to it all the time! So All of you GET IT!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great Album, but No Vocal Fireworks.......2005-09-20

This is a beautfully rendered album and Joni's voice is pitch perfect. She sings every note as written. But she takes no interpretive chances and there's no vocal fireworks. The real accomplishment here are the splendid arrangements by Jeffrey Osborne and Geoff Love - two men who never met a huge orchestra they didn't like. The lush, layered arrangements are spectacular. The musicians are also first rate and for such a large gathering there's a fantastic cohesiveness. Though her singing is pleasant enough, Joni's voice is basically the 101st instrument in the entire ensemble.

5 out of 5 stars Great Standards!!.......2003-02-15

This is a great album of classic standards with lush orchestrations. Joni's voice is incredibly smooth and expressive and the selections are some of the best of the Jerome Kern era of classic songwriters. My favorite is Imagination. Best version I have ever heard...as a matter of fact many of the tunes are my benchmark arrangements. If you are a fan of the 30's-50's classic love songs and ballads, this is for you!! Great for Valentines Day. Romantic stuff. This was one of my favorite albums on vinyl as a kid. Now I can get the CD. Yeah!

5 out of 5 stars Joni James at Abbey Road!.......2002-07-23

Miss Joni James swept away on a veritable ocean of violins!
This classic LP remastered in pristine sound with tender torch tunes rendered "close to the microphone" by one of the 1950s most popular singing icons. Recorded in London at the famous Abbey Road studios with those lush, sweeping Acquaviva arrangements. Joni's most divine moment! (Tacked on to the original album are 6 tracks, also with the 100 Strings orchestra, of songs from her Jimmy McHugh tribute LP.)

Album Description

5 out of 5 stars Great Sampling of Gilbert & Sullivan Gems.......2001-08-22

Gilbert & Sullivan have been well-served on disc and this compliation of 22 tracks taken from of some of their most popular operettas is certainly no exception. Contained here are tuneful hits from HMS Pinafore, Pirates of Penzance, Iolanthe, Mikado, Patience, and the Gondoliers. These performances are taken from the complete sets by Sir Malcolm Sargent conducting the Pro Arte Orchestra, Glyndebourne Festival Chorus, and several outstanding soloists. I own several of these complete operettas by this group and can attest to their excellence in both singing and orchestral playing. I feel these performances are the best available, and that's a huge compliment given the fine competition. I love playing this disc in my car whenever I'm in a Gilbert & Sullivan "greatest hits" mood. Whether you're a novice or veteran to these works, you can't beat this highly enjoyable CD. Recommended!
