You frequently find Marc Ducret's guitar in a tangle of rhythmic and melodic development as one of Tim Berne's collaborators. But you rarely get Ducret so nakedly and in so explorative a mellow mood. As a title, Detail accurately addresses what you get in this session, which is a whole lot of guitarist's details, fine points of improvisation that might sound like noodling at first pass but then coalesces obviously into a well-considered, sharply delivered set of tunes. They sound a bit like etudes, little studies for guitar that might go longer than most etudes but still retain enough of the close-listening and fundamental properties of the pedagogic tradition. If these were etudes, they would be quite clearly from a tradition wholly separate from modern jazz or classical guitar. They're squirrelly and strange and pleasant. If it's flash or abrasion or anything discernibly straightforward you're expecting, you'll be disappointed. This one heads in directions that avant-gardists and more mainstream listeners will both find strange but enticing. --Andrew Bartlett

Awesome - as expected.......2006-07-18
While this new album is not as good as the other two, expect to hear more of M's awesome vocals, Mike's raw guitar, Gabe's fantastic drumming, and Jay's debut album with the band. The album does not seem to have as much drive and ambition as its predecessors, its still fun to rock out to.
not as good as the older stuff.......2005-10-18
I usually don;t listen to a lot of punk rock. But a friend turned me on to Tsunami Bomb and we saw 'em live at this little dive bar near me. I became a fan, and i think that the lead singer Agent M is totally sweet.
Anyhow, i was excited as hell when I found this album. But as I listened to it, I didn't get into it as much. Something about the earlier ones was really catchy, sing along stuff..this album doesn;t have as much of that. It's still good, and I do really like the song 'Being Alright' (which is real positive), but the rest just felt less polished or structured to me. I still recommend it for punk fans, tho.
better than "the ultimate escape"........2005-10-10
when I first heard "20 going on.." from "the ultimate escape", I knew I had to get to know this band. From that CD, there were some awesome songs in the vein of "20 going on..", but also a couple fillers. With the definitive act, TB has done away with the fillers and put out an album where you can listen to every song with skipping tracks. this band is very unique because their lead singer is a girl and she has a better vocal range than most of the guys in her genre. this is great stuff, and if you liked "the ultimate escape", you'll LOVE definitive act. they just keep getting better!
mindblowing, a must for anyone with a pulse.......2005-08-21
I stumbled upon Tsunami bomb's first record "the ultimate escape" at a local music store last year, and after hearing 20 going on... (which left me floored), I bought the record. It was simply amazing. To make a better record than "the ultimate escape" seemed impossible to me, but a year later TB arrived with "Definitive act", which could almost be, dare I say, better? If you like music, you must hear Agent M's killer vocals combined with TB's signature dark melody. it's freakin' spine-chilling man! I can't imagine my life without tsunami bomb in it. I can't wait until they come to my town! Please, PLEASE find someway to get both of their records. they'll change your f**king life!!! Highly, HIGHLY advised for purchase.
Transcending the Harder Elements of Rock.......2005-05-23
I know there are people out there that hate punk, dismissing it as childish and immature or simply dont put the effort into hearing some of the better bands instead of just generalizing the whole genre from the bands the media markets like to force down peoples eardrums. But as someone who loves every variety of music out there, to the uninitiated Tsunami Bomb is an excellent punk rock band with one of the best female vocalists I've heard this side of R&B, Gwen Stefani has nothing on her. When she does her solo accapella's and then right after comes a nice whiff of guitar and beatwork it will get you two looks everytime you're stopped at an intersection, first WTF then the second time around "hey thats pretty good, who is that?"
I was in the record store today and was getting pretty frustrated that they didnt have anything I was looking for but when I picked up this album 'The Definitive Act' used I thought I would give it a go since I loved their first cd 'The Enemy Within..' that I picked up way back. On my way to work, not even having the volume at very high, I was simply blown away by the first two songs, very addicting punk melodies. I came to find out nothing on this cd is horrible, there might be some subpar songs but they are certainly listenable and far from annoying. In my opinion 'A Lonely Chord' is the pick of the litter, coming off with a modern style beat of old school big city jazz infused with melodic guitar riffs and of course Agent M's ever so highlighting voice orchestrating it altogether. They have more of a poppish feel to their music on this then previous albums, not radio friendly just something thats more appealing to the ear then a good majority of the punk bands out there.
Normally I dont recommend music to others since everyone has such a pathetic undertaste for dismissing certain bands/groups/singers for not being their type of music. But I would think their style transcends, at the very least, all of the harder elements of rock. If you like Metal, Hard Rock, Punk Rock, or anything with a nice attitude to it I would definately recommend Tsunami Bomb to you.

This is the BEST.......2006-06-23
I've got every Terri Hendix CD, and with each one I think - Wow! This is the best ever! Playful, introspective, thoughtful, funny - with music and lyrics complimenting each other to a 'T'. This is one of my favoite CD's of all time - Can't wait for the next one!
Some Very Good Songs on a Misfire Album.......2005-12-18
Like many folk and indie artists in the last few years, Terri Hendrix has been moved by the muse to craft a social/political album. And like many social/political albums in the last few years, this one has some very good songs, and clunks in between.
If you've heard tracks like "Breakdown" and "Monopoly," you know that Terri Hendrix has some sharp, incisive views. She has the ability to cut through the chatter and get right to the heart of what's wrong in our world today. But if you listen to the album cuts that haven't been released to radio and podcasts, tracks like "It's About Time" and "Judgement Day," the lyrical content becomes leaden and declarative. She feels the need to spell everything out, like she can't quite trust her audience to follow what she's saying and come to their own conclusions. It's as though she lapses into a professorial mentality, lecturing to students who are hunched over their composition books taking notes.
Sonically, this album is sterling. Hendrix doesn't abandon the guitar-driven Texas country sound that has characterized most of her music to date. But she does incorporate a little more of a peppy pop aspect that steers her ringing voice into more Mariah and less Loretta Lynn. Reading over what I've just written, I realize that could sound like an insult, but I don't mean it that way. Rather, Terri uses the mainstream like a buffet, picking and choosing what serves the very individual hybrid sound she's trying to create.
Late in the album, she slackens on the political drive, and a sturdier, more organic lyric crive comes through. I admit to not liking Luka Bloom's version "I Need Love" from a few years ago, but Terri Hendrix makes it her own, and it works well. "Quiet Me" and "Long Ride Home" were both written by other artists, but Hendrix makes them her own, adding a welcome dose of personal introspection at the end of the disc.
Fans of Terri Hendrix will find plenty to like about this CD. So will fans of indie folk and lo-fi country. Even the weaker political songs have good musical resonance, including some violin and cello, and supporting vocals from Ruthie Foster. This album isn't a future classic, and it isn't even going to be remembered as one of Hendrix's better efforts. But it is going to be heard and remembered, and that's what really matters.
She's the nicest person in the world........2004-11-11
She has a dynamic voice, great songs, and a great personality. She is very witty, and her songs showcase her wit well. If you like a great variety of music, you'll likely enjoy this album -- her diverse interests shine through brightly. It's a great cd (as are all of her others). I even like her live cd's, which is entirely out-of-character for me. Hope to see you at another PA show!
Totally engaging.......2004-10-20
This is my first Terri Hendrix album but it won't be my last. Every song is a winner. She's totally engaging with a voice that draws you in, first rate music, and lyrics that are deep and personal.
Terri Rocks.......2004-10-13
This is a great CD. Every single song is incredible. Terri's songwriting skills are only eclipsed by the way she sings these songs. If you have a chance to see her live DO NOT MISS IT. She is even better live.

With her apple-cheeked smile and sun-bleached hair, Texas's Terri Hendrix could pass for the fourth member of the Dixie Chicks--that is, if she'd dab on a little make-up and change into something other than overalls. The fact that Hendrix's producer and multi-instrumentalist musical partner, Lloyd Maines, is the father of Chick-singer Natalie Maines makes such associations inevitable. But Hendrix's folk-pop sound--slow-roasted over the late-night fires of the Kerrville Folk Festival--has more in common with the DIY ethic of Ani DiFranco than anything concocted in a Nashville studio. Places in Between, her fourth self-released album, features Maines and a band of Austin's finest playing a darker and more reflective program than Hendrix's previous work, Wilory Farm. In the new album's best song, "Fair," she observes that "nothin' is fair but the weather." But upbeat originals like the title track and "My Own Place" reveal a plucky spirit that requires no cosmetic enhancement to shine brightly. --Rick Mitchell
Album Description
"Places In Between" unites pop and roots music on an ambitious soul-searching musical journey. The album's theme of hope and determination in the face of adversity is the common thread that ties the various musical stylings together.
Customer Reviews:
A more mature Terri--but still a blast.......2001-05-19
Hendrix is a gem. She's a fine writer backed by a first-rate band, and on this album she's more reflective, as the album's cover indicates. It's a more personal glimpse, more private. But that's not to say she's still not lots of fun too. A couple of these tunes really rock (the title tune, for example), and cuts like "Invisible Girl" and "My Own Place" are terrific upbeat numbers, and they showcase Hendrix's improved instrumental abilities (she's working hard to be a better player, obviously). As with her previous releases, you get to experience a variety of styles here, from folk to rock to bluegrass--and it's all done well. "Eagles," a song she recorded on her first CD, "Two Dollar Shoes," is terrific here. All three of her previous CDs are well worth owning: there's not a disappointing moment anywhere.
best pick on my wish list.......2001-02-24
I finally bought this CD for myself a year after I put it on my wish list (gotta keep track of all those desires, you know), and although I couldn't initially remember why I wanted to get this music, once I got it, I congratulated myself a million times over. What I should be doing, however, is writing fan mail to Terri Hendrix. Wow! She's a dynamo. Her lyrics are smart, funny, thoughtful, even danceable in places. Good Times Van and My Own Place are two of my current favorites, and in fact I believe it was My Own Place that I heard on folk radio up in Maine with the mention that it had won album of the year in some category that led me to hunt it down and eventually purchase it.
I'd love to see Terri Hendrix live--her songs give some of the flavor of the energy she must have with an audience. But as second best buy this CD...out of all of the music I've purchased this year, this one is one of the ones I'm the most pleased about.
Best Kept Secret In Texas.......2000-08-25
What can you say about an album that you listen to over and over and over and it just keeps getting better.
Terri's superb voice is versatile and addictive. Her songs make you feel like you really aren't alone in the world.
Buy this - you can't be sorry.
My Place...Your Place..."Places In Between".......2000-06-22
I first saw Terri Hendrix in 1994 at a small Italian restaurant in San Antonio, Texas. She sat on a "stool too small" (to borrow lyrics from her first release, "Two Dollar Shoes"), flashed her million-watt smile, and wowed me with her angelic voice. The fact that she picked a mean guitar was icing on the cake. I was hooked and have eagerly followed her career ever since. I've seen her in every sort of venue and in every sort of mood. She is one of a kind.
After her third release "Terri Hendrix Live," I greatly anticipated a studio release. She has not disappointed me. "Places In Between" is a superb album and showcases Terri's strengths. From the semi-autobiographical title track to the rollicking "My Own Place"; from the bluesy "Goodtime Van" to the effervescent "Invisible Girl," Terri manages to bring a smile to my face on almost every song.
As with her previous studio releases, she has also re-recorded tracks from her first album ("Eagles" and "Moon On The Water").
Her band is the same as the "Live" release and is even tighter on "Places."
Terri's talent continues to shine and with this release, I am assured that she will reach even more people with her superior songwriting abilities and musicianship.
This CD is one of very few that is permanently in my CD changer.
Try it....you won't be disappointed.

Album Description
"Don't rush me," Hendrix asserts on her unflinching new CD. "I'm coming along." Judging from the sound of it, Hendrix has arrived, with a collection of songs driven by a survivor's grace and an optimist's soul. An album of extraordinary depth and stylistic diversity, The Ring serves as an aptand for some unexpectedculmination to the first six years of Hendrix's journey as an independent artist. From the opening notes of "Goodbye Charlie Brown," the songs here affirm Hendrix's revered strengths as a writer and performer while serving notice that times have changed. On her last studio album, the eloquent Places In Between (2000), Hendrix struck a reflective chord that suited the often highly personal subject matter; on The Ring, she takes a considerable step forward: her ambitious vocals, melodic instincts, and expertly crafted songs are unified as never before, supporting the album's clearly delineated focus and showcasing a voice at once mature and unabashedly honest, confident and courageous. "I've been who I am, and I've been who I'm not," Hendrix sings. "Both have led me to find my own point of view." Along the way, she's discovered much about herselfshe's wiser now; stronger tooand she's gained an appreciation for the enduring truths that anchor us: the need for love; family and friends; and undying faithin oneself, in each other, in the universe. On The Ring, Hendrix reminds us that the cycles of our lives lead us into territories both familiar and unknown, changing us in unexpected ways, forcing us to consider and reconsider our place in a shifting universe. And yet, in its permanence, the ring reminds us that even as we grow and change, with grace, we'll ultimately arrive back where we startedknowing the place, perhaps, for the first time.
Customer Reviews:
Clear and Beautiful.......2003-10-14
As far as I know, this is the first album to include a song mourning the passing of cartoonist Charles Schultz, and it puts this track right at the front, before the love songs and autobiographical material. I have a hard time envisioning another artist who would have had the chutzpah to start a disc off by remembering a bald-headed kid who kept falling for that stupid football trick. And that's what makes Terri Hendrix special.
Someone said Terri Hendrix could be the fourth Dixie Chick if she worked on her image. That's a slander, because Terri Hendrix is something the Dixie Chicks could never be: good. Her music is artfully constructed, her lyrics are poetic, her themes are meaningful, and as you listen to this album you realize she's an artist, not a radio-friendly commodity.
The lyrical sophistication of these songs suggests the heyday of Dylan and Guthrie, but the content and voice are particularly original. I can't imagine either of those luminaries writing a song about insomnia ("Night Wolves") or remembering positively Mom and Dad ("The Ring"). Even the voice in the music is distinct. Though there are strong folk-country roots, there are also hints of Celtic, jazz, rock, and other eclectic styles.
If I had been producing this album, I would have passed over the final track, "Prayer for My Friends," or moved it elsewhere in the album. It feels like a post-script, while the real album ended with the final track. Other than that, I have a hard time finding anything even remotely wrong with this album; it's that sterling.
Like most original voices, her material won't sit well with everybody, and that's okay. What matters is less whether everybody likes it than that people who like it like it very strongly. This album will most definitely hit people where they live, and stick with them for a long time to come.
Solid.......2002-10-13
A decent album. It repeats many of the same themes from other Hendrix albums. She seems more adventurous musically. Recommended.
A pleasant surprise.......2002-10-03
Picked this up on the recommendation of a friend, and I'm loving it! She reminds me somewhat of Dar Williams (and maybe a little Rikki Lee Jones), but mostly she's in a class by herself. Great voice, phrasing, playing and writing. I love pretty much every track, but "Nightwolves" is the one I keep going back to -- it's got a nice, spooky groove that really stands out. And "Long Time Coming," I think one of maybe two tunes she didn't write, is gorgeous. Definitely worth checking out.
The Fact Is.......2002-08-25
I generally ignore others' claims about an album "never leaving my CD player," because my tastes and moods change too often for that kind of thing. But "The Ring" is an exception. I've spun this thing every day since it's release in early June, and figure I'll continue to do so for a long while. As a fan of Hendrix's music, I came to this with no small amount of bias, but the leap in maturity and songwriting on this album still impresses me. Hendrix's style has often been summed up (somewhat lazily) as sunny and effervescent, and there's enough here to keep fans of that stuff happy, but it's the darker, more introspective songs that really hit home: "Spinning Off," "Nightwolves," "I Found the Lions" -- these aren't happy-go-lucky folk-pop songs. Even the bouncier tunes -- the scat-happy "From Another Planet" and catchy "Consider Me" -- are far more spice than sugar, if you can wipe the smile off your face long enough to pay attention to the lyrics. Add the moving and eloquent title track--a testament to the endurance of love-- along with Hendrix's stubborn, determined mission statement on "The Fact Is," and you've got one of the smartest and most enjoyable singer-songwriter albums of the year--or any year, for that matter.
great CD.......2002-06-05
I bought this CD a couple of weeks ago @ her show on the riverfront in Fort Smith, Arkansas (just to explain how I got hold of it before the official release date). From what I gather,
I think Terri is holding off a bit on the release because Fathers day is so close--the title track is a tribute to her father.
This is, in general, a strong album--a more polished product than her earlier albums (which are also excellent), in short, quite highly recommended for anybody who loves the "Austin sound." Lloyd Maines provides excellent support, as always.

Wonderful.......2006-06-10
I was just at home, cup of coffee to hand, working away of a Saturday morning and listening to CBC Radio 2 on-line - time zones can do strange things to one's listening schedules - as I slowly realised they were playing the most amazing music. So amazing that I showed up late for a meeting having stayed chez moi in order to find out what it was I was hearing. "When the Detail Lost Its Freedom". Wonderful!
Cheers,

melodies through pipelines.......2006-01-07
Listening to the album as I write this. A real pleasure. Brian McBride is one half of Stars of the Lid, and this album is very similar to earlier albums, such as Tired Sounds Of.... This album does utilize instrumentation - such as horns and piano - more recognizable than much of the earlier work. McBride has brought in a group of musicians, including the Inland Empire Sumphony Quartet, to help realize the album's virtuosity. In addition, two of the tracks use vocals, but they are used quite successfully as a fitting component to each movement.
Overture (for OTHER HALFS), the album's opening, is a wonderful beginning to an extremely solid work. There are no stand out tracks here; the songs and gestures flow together, creating a wonderful gestalt. Sad, evocative music - an ambient gem.
In his liner notes, McBride includes "Treatments" among the instrumentation he's used for many of the tracks. I can only guess what that means. But I hope that this aural treat is one of many to come.
Serene music for mindful lifestyle.......2006-01-03
I was blessed to find out about Brian McBride's when I read about this release in HammockMusic.com. His work now accompanies me at all times. It's fascinating music to work to, since it barely distracts you, and serves as a fabulous musical cushion on which to set your ideas. But it also does a great job as a serene bedside music, to meditate and get yourself ready to call it a day. I can only compare "When the Detail Lost Its Freedom" to Hammock's works, which I highly recommend ("Kenotic" was among my picks for Best of 2005).
a hazy blurry dreamlike world, so serene and peaceful.......2005-12-11
Brian McBride is one half of AQ faves Stars Of The Lid, a group who specialized in somnambulent moonlit guitarscapes, dark and gorgeously lugubrious, and who more recently have begun to explore more lush and epic musical vistas. Some of my favorite late night dreamy drones have come from those Stars, so it's no surprise that McBride's first proper solo outing is just as mysterious and compelling. A lush series of swoonsome smears, warm chordal swells stretched into slow burning minor key sagas, minor key but still strangely hopeful sounding, sun dappled with the first rays of morning light after an endless night of darkness and despair.
Each piece on When The Detail Lost Its Freedom is delicately assembled from minimal violins, gentle piano, moaning trumpets, haunting western guitar, drifting disembodied vocals, and warm reverb, all swirled into indistinct shapes, like opening your eyes first thing in the morning, a hazy blurry dreamlike world, so serene and peaceful. At times, it almost sounds like the most minimal of post rock, but slowed down to a drumless crawl, the occasional vocals definitely remind me of Low, a darkly romantic slowcore, but wherever McBride takes these songs, we're never far from slipping back into a doleful drift of melancholy moods and slow shifting shimmers. It's sort of like staring into a thick cloudy swirl of sound, dense and drifting, with the occasional melody or voice slowly emerging and taking shape before flickering and fading out, dissolving into the swells of surrounding sound. So lovely.
Great solo album from half of duo Stars Of The Lid .......2005-11-23
Brian McBride is one half of the duo Stars Of The Lid, who have put together some of my favorite drone music ever with Avec Laudenum and The Tired Sounds Of... Their music inhabits a strange world where classical music turns to goo and melts with drifting guitars in a way that seems to cover my head like a fuzzy blanket on a cold day. Last year, the other half of the duo (Adam Wiltzie) released his first solo effort as The Dead Texan, and now McBride is up with a release created over the course of the last four years, mainly on an ASP X keyboard sampler.
The creation instrument is interesting to note, because like the work of Stars Of The Lid, it has things in common with other work in similar genres, yet inhabits a slightly unique world. With the ASR X, McBride sampled everything from room noise to stringed instruments to vocals and harmonica, then played those sounds and layered them, creating an album that sounds like a unique mutation of his work with Stars Of The Lid. As with the work of his other group, it's an album that needs to be listened to with headphones (or at least in a certain mindset) to appreciate fully.
This isn't music to exercise to (obviously), or even probably cook to, although it does make an amazing accompaniment to winding down and relaxing. It opens with "Overture (For Other Halfs)" and by blending layers of strings and field recordings, the track recalls the amazing work by Gavin Bryars on The Sinking Of The Titanic. From there, "Piano ABG" mixes quiet piano melodies and backwards swirls of other instrumentation while soft static pops and hiss coats everything in a soft haze and "Prelude" sounds like a haunting and dry guitar being played on a keyboard (which is probably what it is), and the effect is enchanting.
When McBride takes on a slightly more structured route, he's still successful, and "Our Last Moment In Song" is easily one of the best tracks on the entire release. With soft white noise, actual guitar, and layered male-female vocals, the slowly building track sounds a bit like Labradford crossed with This Mortal Coil. On "Retenir," McBride conjures up a pulsing world of what sounds like manipulated strings, harmonica, and low end found sound rumbles that sounds like something that needs to be played at the end of man.

An undiscovered treasure! Buy it now!.......2001-06-28
If you like good music - I mean really good music, with excellent vocals, flawless playing, and incredibly intuitive songwriting, buy this cd! You will not be disappointed. I bought it based on the reviews alone and they were all right. Don't even listen to the demos. Just order it and let yourself discover this fine cd! Aside from "Wind me up" (the only song that feels out of place and is a little long), the songs grow on you - they are layered, they move, evolve and swirl - you will find yourself singing them subconciously. Don't buy some famous person's cd that you've heard on the radio, or some other cd that you already have a tape or LP of and want to replace. Take a chance on Terri and enjoy it. I plan to get everything else she has done and will do - I am now a permanent fan! Thanks Terri, wherever you are!! Come play LA soon!!!!
Wilory Farm.......2000-05-06
I used to see Terri live when I lived in Texas and she was gigging all around San Marcos, New Braunfels, and still quite frequently at Cibolo Creek (outside of San Antonio). I was an instant fan and continue to be, rabidly! (: As noted in the above reviews, she encompasses a wide range of styles. But the key is that all of her songs have these incredible "I am soooooo in touch!" lyrics, that you will be singing along! You won't be able to stop yourself! This album is exceptional and will surely take Terri to where she deserves to be: the top. Buy this one and if you don't find yourself "wind, wind, wind me-up"ping, then you ain't right! (I've yet to come across a single person who didn't love her instantly, male or female.) Additionally, if you ever get the chance to see this gal live, JUST DO IT!
One of the best I've ever heard...........1999-08-18
This album is extremely well done. She has so many styles that it is impossible to put her in one genre. Every song she does comes from her heart and you can really hear her emotions while she sings. There are too many songs on this CD for me to name that are wonderful, but to pick three, they would be have to be Wallet; Love Like This; and Hole In My Pocket. You need to experience this singer/songwriter!!
Terri Hendrix: Songwriting, guitar-picking phenomenon.......1999-07-25
Terri sings from her heart. Lyrically, Terri's songs are wise, insightful, universally appealing. Musically, you can't pin her down to one or two genres..she's has strong skills in at least 8 styles..blues, folk, country, jazz, tejano, texas swing, rock and pop. You'll never tire of hearing this album, there is just too much depth to it. Lloyd Maines is the most revered and sought-after steel guitarist and producer in Texas. None of this is hype. It's the real deal.
One of the best of this or any other year.......1999-06-11
This is a wonderful album -- tuneful, fast, slow, eclectic, profound and superbly performed. It features Terri's note-perfect vocals and some great picking. After listening to it, I was hooked!
