REMASTERED CLASSIC TWO-FER.......2004-01-13
As a kid, I was into rock & pop, which is now called "Classic Rock", back in the 70's. I was scanning the radio tuner and came upon ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL's [then] current hit "The Letter That Johnny Walker Read" and was stunned at how incredibly great this narrated & theatrical country weeper sounded. Not long after, another "hit", "Nothing Takes The Place Of You", featuring the great AATW vocalist CHRIS O'CONNELL stormed up the charts and it was a bluesy gem of a performance to behold. The real Chris O'Connell radio hit stunner followed in succession up the charts with her classic performance of "THE BUMP BOUNCE BOOGIE", a toe-tappin' mover and shakin' swing number which would no doubt turn the Andrews Sisters(1940s pop superstars) green with envy. I've had that "TEXAS GOLD" Vinyl Lp since way back then, but, am so happy that it's been reissued here in a grand "two-fer" package in pristine REMASTERED sound! I'd never heard the "Comin' Right At You" album before, but, it's also an awesome recording that I must explore much more. C&W, Swing, Big Band Jazz were my parent's music, but, RAY BENSON & COMPANY gave my generation a superb blend of mesmerizing music to call our own...and, CHRIS O'CONNELL, wherever you are now, a HUGE "THANK YOU" for your treasured stellar performances and memories you gave us during your AATW days! Two classic Lps remastered on one "must have" Cd.
WESTERN SWING THAT WOULD MAKE BOB WILLS PROUD.......2001-04-16
The first time I heard this band was in the mid 70's when I went to visit my friend David out in San Francisco. He introduced me to Asleep At The Wheel's first album "Comin' Right At Ya". When that great Bob Wills song "TAKE ME BACK TO TULSA" started playing, this kid from Oklahoma was hooked! This was a great album of western swing that, up to that point, these ears had never heard. Asleep At The Wheel, who were originally from Austin, moved to San Francisco, and under the influence of Commander Cody, worked the clubs there and eventually became these great pioneering rockabilly/western swing revivalists. The Wheel were a talented band of great musicians. They had what were probably the two best fiddle players around in the legendary Johnny Gimble and the multi-talented Andy Stein from the Commander Cody Band, who claimed he could play virtually any stringed instrument you put in front of him. As for the music on their first record; besides "TAKE ME BACK TO TULSA", two other tracks that really stand out on here are CHEROKEE BOOGIE, which features some great piano playing by Floyd Domino, and my favorite alltime Wheel song I'VE BEEN EVERYWHERE. You just gotta hear this one. It starts out ultra-slow and eventually turns into western swing on speed. It's great, and it's one I guarantee you'll be wanting to learn the words to. You'll be singin' it for days, or in my case years. As for the second album on this CD called "Texas Gold". I believe this is their third record. It's not as good as their first two albums, but it's still a pretty good effort. The standout tracks on this one are "THE LETTER THAT JOHNNY WALKER READ, which was cowritten by Commander Cody. "ROLL EM FLOYD, which again features some great piano playing by Floyd Domino. Another song which I think is the best on the album is "RUNNIN' AFTER FOOLS", which was written and sung by Leroy Preston, who besides this one, penned most of the songs on these two albums. This is a really nice twofer by the Wheel. Asleep At The Wheel's CD catalogue is not complete however, until Epic Records rereleases their self-titled second album, which has been mysteriously deleted. This was the Wheel's best record. Asleep At The Wheel has gone through many band member changes over the last 30 years, but they were never better than this outfit of renegade western swingers. I've seen these guys "live", and I guarantee ya they can get your feet movin' on the old hardwood floor. Highly recommended listenin'!
Vocalization.......2000-10-03
As usual, the music of AATW was outstanding even though this album was remastered from quite a while ago. The fellow who did the vocals (also played guitar and drums), should sit down and listen to himself and see if he agrees with me that he should stick to guitar and drums and leave the singing to Benson or some other vocalist. This gentleman may well be the nicest person on earth, but I don't think he did AATW any favors by singing. Of course, this is my own opinion but I played rhythm guitar and sung country and swing music for 45 years, so I believe that my feelings about this album are justified.

Blah blah blah blah........1999-07-28
This is not a review. Your Persuasions "personnel" information needs updating. The 1999 Persuasions' line-up consists of Jerry Lawson, Jimmy Hayes, "Sweet Joe" Russell, Jayotis Washington, and brand new members Bernard "B.J." Jones and Raymond Sanders. Herbert "Toubo" Rhoad died in 1988. Source: Music For Little People Staff, which produced "On The Good Ship Lollipop."
One of their best!.......1999-06-09
"Comin at Ya" is a real sleeper of a Persuasions album, all too often overlooked. Some fans consider it their most exhilirating, high energy album of all. There are only 11 songs, but each one establishes a distinctive charm and lingering impact. "Don't Let Him Take Your Love" is as potent as anything on their "We Came To Play" album, as is the supercharged "I'll Be Forever Loving You" and "Drip Drop." The group was never in better voice, or sharper harmony than on this 1979 record which features among its eclectic line-up Paul Simon's "Love Me Like A Rock and Elvis's old hit, "Return to Sender." "Comin At Ya" also contains what could be first tenor Jayotis Washington's finest moment on record, the hilarious and infectous "Besame Mucho." While the album might not have as compelling a choice of material as the group's best albums ("Street Corner Symphony," "Chirpin'," "We Came To Play'""Sincerely") it does showcase The Persuasions at their best. Indispensable.

HOLY COW!!!.......2007-01-10
All I can say is that the Harry Caray impression is the best thing I have ever heard... that was the whole reason behind my purchase of the CD. I was not disappointed by the rest. A great buy for the laughs you get.
Great sports comedy for all to enjoy.......2005-01-21
Not a Mega-sports fan myself doesn't take a thing away from this album which is primarily sports related. First saw John Caponera in a Comedy Central poker game for comedians special (which I would love to find the DVD or VHS of). There were some big names in the line up. Caponera shined above the rest. Had to find out who he was and found this album. It has a very prominent place in my large collection of comedy cd's. Buy this cd so that he might put out another gem like this.
One of the GREATS!.......1999-07-03
This is a must-have CD! His impersonation of Harry Carray is legendary. If you haven't seen him perform his stand-up routine live, listen to this CD and you will want to for sure! This is one of those comedy CDs that you can listen to over and over like a music CD. I still laugh on the 5th time.

Jersey's Finest.......2006-07-02
If you have even a periodic indulgence in bands like Little Feat or Dave Matthews and feel like taking a chance on some unfamiliar territory, TRY THIS DISC. The lead singer is now in Railroad Earth and is probably one of the best singer/songwriters out there. FGH was one of the best live bands in the tri-state area for the better part of a decade, and this is just a great effort all around (in spite of the title). I'm not sure they lend themselves to categorization, but I would say they were a great half-acoustic folk/funk cross with great lyrics to ground them. A home-grown Jersey band that should have had the trajectory of people they routinely warmed up for. Sweet, sweet, sweet.

Erratic compilation comin' at' ya.......2000-12-21
For reasons that aren't explained,Joel Dorn the compiler of this welcome reissue of Don Patterson's Muse Records material, has used tracks from three sessions spread over four years. The resulting album has 5 tracks from "These are soulful days", 2 from "Movin'up" and 1 from "The return of Don Patterson".The latter is really not very good at all, the drummer seems all over the place. The rest, and particularly tracks 1,3,4 & 5 are excellent examples of what Patterson was capable of achieving with a Hammond B3. He receives stirling support from the Heath brothers and Pat Martino plays some sinewy guitar. Recommended for those tracks, and also for the excellent story in the sleevenotes about Sonny Stitt!
Another great reissue by 32 jazz.......2000-08-20
This is an excellent groovy album. Those Muse sessions are really good, especialy the first 4 tunes with Jimmy and Albert Heath and Pat Martino. And at this price you can't afford not to add this record to your collection if you're a serious jazz organ maniac.

comin' at ya.......2001-07-21
I have been waiting for this album to come out on cd for years. It is one of my favorites. Three songs (The Breeze and I, Runaway, and I Wouldn't Change a Thing) blend well for a great dance/get you in a good mood feeling. A very ecclectic percussion (I believe his sister is Sheila E.) will get you moving if you love that kind of thing. The Carlos Santana cover of Everything is Coming Our Way is nice and smooth, too. A great seventies Latin Disco album! If you like Tito Puente, this is for you.
