A Worthy Collection for a New Collector.......2007-01-10

I think this is an excellent package and quite reasonably priced.The CD "NEVER TOO MUCH" is a classic; this is Luther's 1st CD (1981) and has quite a number of his hits including "Never Too Much", "A House is Not a Home" and "She's a Super Lady". "FOREVER, FOR ALWAYS" (1982) includes "Since I Lost My Baby" "Bad Boys /Having a Party" and "She Loves Me Back" and the CD "FOR LOVE/BUSYBODY" (1983) includes the duet with Dionne Warwick "How Many Times Can We Say GoodBye" and "Superstar/Until You Come Back To Me" If you are a new collector of Luther Vandross this Three Package Collection is a perfect starting place as these 3 CDs are his earliest recordings. If you are a seasoned collector of Luther I'm sure "I'd be preaching to the choir" saying anything to you as I'm sure you would already have these CDs in your collection.

The eclectic blend of Classical, Jazz, and Eastern/World music of the superb music group Oregon, never ceases to captivate those who hear them.

From the very first album that acquired critical attention from this group "Winter Light" in 1974... audiences worldwide have have been enraptured by Oregon's sound... Giving voice as the group does to unexplored vibrant new innovation.. in a varied blend utilizing their signature improvisational effect...and weaving a tapestry of colors and shapes in ther unique stylized sound,

"Always, Never & Forever" continues the rich legacy of Oregon. Featured percussionist, Trilok Gurtu joins the seminal "World Music" ensemble in this wonderful recording (Intuit) 1991...

The selection "Aurora" has come to be considered a definitive recording by the group. No wonder as one hears the beauty, and symmetry of the woodwind intruments, the wonderful reeds of Paul McCandless...... expressing an awakening like a waterfall rushing...

"Beppo" employs a lovely guitar... gently taking you on your own journey within the composition... Ralph Towner at his best here on Classical guitar... Jazz elements are heard on this composition as well.

The concluding cut to this CD, "Always, Never, and Forever is contemporary Jazz at it's zenith... This selection makes sense, considering that Oregon at it's basic foundation is steeped in the discipline of Jazz...

Aurora means "The rise or dawn of something"... a radiant emission from the upper atmosphere that occurs sporadically over the middle and high latitudes of both hemispheres in the form of luminous bands, streamers or the like... according to The Random House College Dictionary, 1984.

The band Oregon is something like this... their music although not merely sporadic, but as one listens, one can hear... the spectrums.. the streams of color and light.. charged.. as it is played.

this Cd "Always, Never, and Forever" then, radiates and illuminates... to hear this Cd then becomes a musical experience.

A memento of a productive partnership........2001-11-19

EMI commemorate in this double CD a remarkable partnership in the C20th world of music. It began in Berlin in 1926. It had been 20 years since Franz Lehar's "Die lustige Witwe" became the light opera that everyone wanted to see. In places like Beunos Aires it had run simultaneously in five theatres in five different languages. Lehar's subsequent productions had met with diminishing success. His latest light opera, "Paganini", which contained some of his best music, had flopped at its Vienna premiere. Nervous and dispirited as its Berlin premiere drew near, Lehar wrote to the tenor Richard Tauber, "You must sing in Berlin, a second flop is inconceivable for me. I'm suddenly afraid of everything to do with the theatre - I'm getting old".

Tauber obliged. The Berlin production was a resounding success, Tauber sometimes being required to repeat "Gern hab' ich die Frau'n gekusst" as many as five times. Lehar admitted, "Richard, during this moment I have been born again as an artist!" And so began a great final flowering of Lehar theatre productions, all featuring the Austrian tenor Richard Tauber.

Fortunately the Lehar-Tauber association resulted in an extensive series of recordings, in many of which Lehar conducts the orchestra. EMI began issuing a collection of them towards the end of the LP era, and now, in 2001, they are collected onto this double CD. I read the claim that a great many of the tracks appear on CD for the first time, but here in Australia most have already been available on CD.

I don't always find Tauber unexcelled in this repertoire, preferring other tenors sometimes and their recordings. Several of the "Paganini" recordings were made before the Berlin season opened. Tauber and his then wife Carlotta Vanconti sound as though they are sight-reading unfamiliar music. I once possessed several of the "Das Land des Lachelns" items on 78s. The 1929 sound seemed robust and full then, but seems sadly emasculated here.
