4 out of 5 stars JLP's Promising Fully Electric Starter.......2004-09-23

While still in the Mahavishnu Orchestra MK II, Jean Luc concocted his first solo outing. While not as fully realized as subsequent albums, this at least strongly pointed the way he would be heading shortly.

The opening title track with its insistent drumming by Ndugu Leon Chancellor roars out of the gate with Ponty soaring over the top of the maelstrom, beautifully constructed melody here! "Question With No Answer" features a beautiful plaintive piano intro from Patrice Rushen just before Jean Luc enters with the song's probing, insistent melody, gradually building momentum as the full band enters to a rousing conclusion. "Now I Know" is a moody ballad with dreamy Herbie Hancock-esque Rhodes from Patrice as Jean-Luc spins out haunting melodies. Things pick up again with "Polyfolk Dance" featuring some cool odd-meter passages. One thing the album as a whole is lacking in is strong guitar work (the contributions of Dan Sawyer and Ray Parker Jr. are at best serviceable and generic), the solo on here is a bit cliched and irritating with its angry mosquito tone.

Also featured is a solo violin piece "Echoes Of The Future" with Ponty employing an Echoplex for layering figures on top of one another, something that would become one of his trademarks.

The rest of the tracks are decent enough fusion, but in subsequent albums, Ponty's compositional prowess would grow like mad.

A good solid start, all told.

4 out of 5 stars the beginning of Ponty's mature '70s style.......1999-10-10

This album to me represents the beginning of Ponty's run of raw, energy-infused jazz-rock fusion albums of the mid to late '70s, notably his first heavy use of pentatonic scales, distortion, and rock rhythms. Granted, most of the tunes here don't contain the mind-boggling virtuosity which he displays in later releases, (with one notable exception - 'Fight for Life', the second half of which contains a great early example of Ponty's potential to let loose.) Also, this album contains what I think is one of his most beautiful slow songs, 'Now I Know'. The musical inflection he imparts to this remarkably simple melody in B minor is truly something. 'Polyfolk Dance' is the third gem on this album, with some fantastic solo moments by Ponty. Finally, 'Question with no Answer' is a blast to play along with, if you play the violin.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous American Church Music.......2001-10-25

Amy Beach had a fine touch with sacred music, as heard here. 'Jesus, My Savior' is a beautiful piano/voice duet that should be in every church soloist's repertory. Her 'Service in A' rates serious consideration as one of the finest American oratorio-sized works from the 20th century, eclipsed only by Bernstein's 'Chichester Psalms' and Lauridsen's 'Lux Aeterna'.

Mr. Strimple's anthems 'Two from Isaiah' and 'Let This Mind Be In You' are exquisite examples of this art. Brilliantly voiced and solidly musical, they stand with some of the finer English anthems of the early 20th century in texture and concept.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A marvellous demonstration of Handelian ingenuity...........2006-09-07

I have immense feelings of joy when ever I listen to this CD. Some of the music on it was previously unknown to me before I had purchased the CD, but it is has now come to be a definite favourite.

As the title suggests, this is a collection of rather grand music, Handel at his most ceremonial. It is the style with which he became most associated in the years after his death, and an image of grandiose surrounded him, greatly sustained by the almost biblical status the Victorian age gave him. While it has some consensus now that this image probably wasn't helpful to Handel in the long run, it is still good to hear a rousing Handel anthem now and again.

King is at his best in these marvellous interpretations. He breathes new life into almost anything he conducts. Certainly this should be no exception. Of particular note, is the anthem 'Sing unto God'. After an admirable introduction on the violins, a lone counter-tenor sings but four introspectively powerful notes, before the full and breath-taking entry of the choir and orchestra combined, in massive block chords. It is a marvellous demonstration of Handelian ingenuity, in a deceptive appearance of simplicity. The entire anthem is incredible, and one can only imagine with what wonder the first audiences listened to it.

It's a shame also that the 'Anthem for the birthday of Queen Anne' isn't more well known. Handel's treatment is expansive, and the choral refrains are remarkably varied, the first being my personal favourite, with it's imposing entry, and highly skilled counterpoint.

I warmly and whole-heartedly recommend this CD to all, in what is a stunning example of excellence, and a triumph for Robert King.

5 out of 5 stars rare material, fine performance.......2006-03-02

Beautiful work by the King's Consort and the Oxford choir, of some fairly hard-to-find and worthwhile works by Handel: Ode to Queen Anne's Birthday, Te Deum, Sing Unto God. I prefer a little more up-tempo on the first Ode aria, Eternal Source of Light Divine, but that's a personal quibble and I highly recommend this album to anyone interested in baroque in general, baroque vocal works, and Handel in particular.

A wonderful "ordinary" sampling of the music written for the English Boy Choir. It is ordinary in the sense that it is not focussed around one holiday like Christmas, but is a sampling of great non-seasonal hymns. Clear beautiful singing and quite inspiring.
