Call this Australian-born pianist's New York answering machine and you'll hear Radiohead's "Knives Out," a forlorn song that slips and slides like a wicked ocean undertow. This is a clue to the open-ended music of Release the Day, which hints at the dark melodies of Radiohead, the happy strut of Dollar Brand, the exotic allure of Randy Weston, and the funky counter-rhythms of Cubano bop. The opening track, "Thirty Three," is a simple motif repeated for 15-plus minutes, casting an engrossing spell while Joey Baron, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Eddie Bobe, and Gary Bartz tease its gossamer melody. It's a simmering introduction to a beautiful record. The album inches along from the Afro-Cuban rumination of "Obatala" to the spectral chant of "Chaos Lento" to the bluesy, beautiful saunter of the "Release the Day," which recalls a Becker-Fagen brass melody from Aja or Two Against Nature. Using space and simplicity, Barney McAll conjures mighty music. --Ken Micallef

Trout Fishing in America has wide appeal.......2007-04-12
After hearing Trout Fishing in America at a concert in my home town, I decided to buy a CD for my husband and me and one for my 7-year-old granddaughter. When we got together, we played (her) "Big Trouble" and (our) "My Best Day". I don't know who enjoyed it more--the children, the parents, or the grandparents. My granddaughter was soon singing along with "When I Was a Dinosaur" and other favorites on the CD which is not surprising when you consider how many times she listened to it during the weekend. Ezra Idlet and Keith Grimwood are wonderful musicians, clever song-writers, and just all-around great entertainers. Here's to many more years of their audience-pleasing CD's and personal appearances.
Big Trouble is great.......2006-08-09
My favorite is still Family Party, but that's probably because I've had it for years--I bought it even before my son was born. We enjoy Big Trouble, we just have to listen to it more often to really get to know the songs. We especially like the title song--that poor kid, in such big trouble because the monsters have wrecked his house!
Great, Upbeat Music for the whole Family!.......2006-07-02
I used to work at a toy store and believe me we had to play some really bad music, but when this cd was on, the time just flew by. Now I listen to this music with my son. It is really upbeat and is something I would recommend when you need to pass the time like when you're in the car or cleaning up. The songs are creative, not the same old sing alongs you get on all the other kids' music cds.
this is so funny!.......2006-03-10
I HAVE THREE CHILDREN WHEN I PUT THIS CD ON WE LAUGH AND IT'S EVEN FUN FOR ADULTS! I THREW HER OUT THE WINDOW! MY SON WHO WE GOT THIS FOR HIS BIRTHDAY LOVED HEARING THIS ON HIS SCHOOL BUS!HE TOLD ME THAT HE WANTED THIS FOR HIS BIRTHDAY.WELL THANK GOODNESS AMAZON HAD IT AND FOR CHEAP! I NEVER KNEW THAT ORDERING COULD BE SO FUN AND FAST!
The Reason I rarely buy stupid popular character kids music.......2006-01-07
Popular fad kids music willl never be able to compare to the perfection that is Trout fishing in America. Fresh, funny, lively addictive music the whole family will want to listen to together.
I was introduced to Trout fisning in America long before I had kids. My husband had 2 CDs fromhis college days.
Every single son on this tape is memerable. YOu will find yourself singing, or trying to sing along in the case of Proper Cup of Coffee!
There are way too many laugh out loud lyrics, the music is contagious and makes you want to move.
Lastly Lullaby is actually a sweet beautiful piece.
NOt only are they fun songs but these 2 men have great voices!

Album Description
Music For Quiet Listening is a compilation of mostly reflective, warm, lyrical pieces that are ideal for late night listening, falling to sleep to, or doing homework/office work by. This is the first recording of the delightful Tailleferre sonatines, the solo piano version of the adagio from Ravel's Piano Concerto in G, Kellogg's exhilirating Dance, and DeLucia's heart-on-sleeve rapture. Also included is the little known but luscious Godowsky Boro Budur by Moonlight, an excerpt from the superb Java Suite. If you enjoy, lyrical, easy to digest classical music, Music For Quiet Listening is just the solution!

Absolutely Wonderful.......2006-05-22
I've had this CD for over a year and had to let people know how wonderful it is. If you like "protest" songs, folk music, rock music, music that takes you back to the kind of music that was written all the time in the late 60's and early 70's....then this CD is for you. Minnie Lou will make you laugh, Big Boat Comin' may make you cry, Only One will give you hope. I hope you buy it and like it as much as I do and my friends do.
Dragon - by John Flynn.......2004-10-07
I actually first heard this album sung live, by John Flynn, at a house party in Maryland. I thought the songs were great and the messages important. I did not get a few of the topics until several listens of the CD (i.e., "Dragon," and the fact that the flash of light at the end of "Big Boat Comin'" was the zookeeper shooting the elephant - I thought the sun was coming out and drying up the flood). However, other than the traumatic realization that the zookeeper was saving the animals from drowning the best she could, I really enjoy all the songs I have heard from Mr. Flynn. I have listened to one other album by him (i cannot remember the title), and enjoyed the majority of those songs as well.

Album Description
One of the simgular most impressive CD's to ever emerge from Seattle, (the) Tonedogs never received the attention they deserved, and have remained something of an anomoly. Led my multi-instrumentalist rennaissance gal, Amy Denio, they produce an incredible amalgam of jazz, rock, freeform, and soundscape textures which sooth, aggrevate, entice, and engage. Included are Fred Chalenor, known for his work with Zony Mash, and Wayne Horowitz, Matt Cameron, famour as the drummer in Soundgarden, and the always incomparable Fred Frith.

Who's Waking Me Up?.......2005-02-06
James Angell is! That is, waking me up to the realization that there is still fantastically original, wonderfully layered and complex music still to be made. A consumate performer, too ... I live in the Portland metro area and have had the good fortune of seeing James live in concert at all but two of his solo shows ... yes, including the shows with John Taylor of Duran Duran. It's true ... some real heavy hitters have been inspired by his music ...
But back to the CD. If you are interested in complex, thoughtful, layered music that will keep your interest for years to come ... this is the CD for you. No boring bubble-gum pop that was out of style ten minutes ago. Sometimes intensely moody, sometimes delightfully fun ... it is all in there. Click on the links above and take a listen. Just remember that your computer won't do it justice.
I have had the priviledge of hearing some of James' newer recordings for an upcoming album as well and I am here to tell you ... it is something worth waiting for. Even better than Private Player, capturing his live energy. (But don't wait until then for a listen, it may be awhile yet!) Why he hasn't been snapped up by a major label yet is beyond me.
Buy it, try it, you won't regret it!
james is amazing.......2003-04-25
this record is a great example of how talented james is. he is a telented performer and a great songwriter. great tracks here. buy this record and support talented indie artists!
Very relaxing and good CD to listen to -- worth your money.......2003-01-07
My husband and I saw James Angell at a gig here in Portland, OR when John Taylor was playing bass for him. I was most impressed and bought the CD. It is a really good listen. I highly recommend it, even if you don't much like listening to mellow music. This one is really different and refreshing.
Well worth your money, I would say.
Good Lord.......2002-10-24
I was absolutely stunned by this CD. I'd read about it and bought it on a whim because of good reviews--wish I had some quotes to drop. I do know a song from this CD will be on Paul McCartney's Garland Appeal and that Bowie called the artist at home to rave about it, but I really must say that the hype is nothing compared to a good listen. Okay, now I over-hyped it, but gee-whiz, I can't remember the last time I paid money for a CD and didn't feel ripped off. This is the real deal, a guy who just makes music, genres be damned. Really good stuff. The first song is amazing, I'm amazed it's not a #1 for real.
James Angell's Anarchy in Alternative Pop/Rock.......2002-10-19
With 4 1/2 Stars this All Music Guide Pick was called "The underground classic of 2002." The New Yorker, Magnet Magazine, and Alternative Press (`Major new talent') gave glowing reviews. John Taylor (Duran Duran) was so inspired by James Angell's performances in New York, he is now Angell's new bass player. Paul McCartney's Garland Appeal has picked the first cut to release on their compilation CD. David Bowie & Courtney Taylor are big fans...
Kindred spirits include: Pink Floyd, John Lennon, Bowie, Tom Waits, Moby, Elton John and Tod Rundgren. If you want radical change ups and soothing passages with the whispered murmurings of the psycheclectic...you're already here. Wanna make your weekend? Order this thing, sit back and relax -- with a little help from your friends.
Let me know what you thought.
Paving the way back to independent music,
William

Stellar Debut by Little Known Jazz Pianist.......2001-06-12
Who is Barney McAll? With no biographical information included in this CD package it's hard to know. I have a feeling he's from Down Under, but that's just a guess.
But it doesn't matter. The proof of the pudding is in the eating, and there's some awfully tasty goodies here. The first cut, "Thirty Three," a slow burn featuring Obatala rhythms, grabs right from the outset and doesn't let go. Featuring some very creative horn work as well as mesmerizing percussion, not to mention stunning piano playing, this is the high point of the set, worth every single second of its fifteen-plus mintues. Still, there's not a weak cut in the bunch. Although most tunes are slow ballads or mid-tempo grooves, McAll's so full of ideas that he always keeps things interesting.
If you've enjoyed Nocturne, the latest from Charlie Haden, or anything by Peter Epstein, give this a try. Highest recommendation.
