I picked up this cd on the recommendation of a usually reliable source. Although all of the musicians are relatively young (Walden alto sax; Kurt Rosenwinkel - guitar; Dwayne Burno - Bass; Eric McPherson - drums), this is not your typical young lion post bop blowing session. Quite the contrary it is a relatively subdued session, which will likely require the listener's complete attention in order to appreciate fully. This is not something to put on as background music. you need to listen. Mr. Walden is obviously a musician who is searching for an original approach to the music. There is a high level of interaction betwen the musicians but there is a certain sameness that permeates the disc. That may partially be a result of the fact that the title tune is interpreted three times on the disc. Also, the mood of the pieces does not vary significantly. Although it is obvious that all of the musicians are talented, the compositions did not overwhelm me. There simply was nothing memorable about any of the compositions for me. This may be part of Walden's intent, as it is obvious that interaction between the musicians was important. Overall, I found this to be a good album, but not something that wows you in that first sit down. I have listended to it several times, and the more I listen to it and realize what is going on, the more I appreciate it.
