The best of Mora's.......2007-02-27
In my opinion this is the best of the five Mora's discs. "Mr. Rhythmist Goes to Town" is a close, but somewhat frenetic, second. This group of expert musicians produced clean, lyrical, intricate sound. Spud Murphy (and Dean Mora) was a genius.
It does swing - and move!.......2007-02-12
Great music - a really nice alternative to contemporary pop. It's not part of the swing fad of a few years ago, but honest music that younger people are unfortunately not exposed to. Keep it up!
Goblin Market (Mora's Modern Rhythmists).......2005-09-01
This is a wonderful tribute album put out by an excellent modern band. Mora's Modern Rhythmists is renowned for its fidelity to the playing styles of the 20's and 30's as well as usage of original jazz charts.
Lyle "Spud" Murphy, who died only this past month (August '05) was a genius in his field. This CD showcases pieces from 1928 - 1937. Mr. Murphy's arranging style was sought out by such band leaders as Benny Goodman, Fletcher Henderson, Paul Whiteman, Bob Crosby and Isham Jones, and with good reason.
He knew how to trim and contain a tune so as to maximize its danceability and charm. (Just try to listen to this and walk away without humming. Can't be done.)
This album will please jazzheads, lindy hoppers, and retro afficianados alike.

A lovely album - most mournful - very concerned with Death. (not in a bad way but in a delicious ghostly way!!)
Great settings of words by Christina Rosetti and others from the same era plus some original songs by Jeff Kelly and Laura Weller - both from the Green Pajamas - if you love them you'll die for this !!

Hauntingly Beautiful Simple and flawless score.......2001-02-22
Goblin Market, a truly obscure musical adaption of the poem, is so perfect in its composition and so beautiful in the mood it sets, .... I am a HUGE musical/ showtunes fan and I would rate this as the BEST of the lesser-known musicals. I would put it in the top 10 musicals of all time - purely for the songs 'Some There are who Never Venture' and 'Do you not Remember Jeanie'. There isn't a single BAD song on the recording - they are all little gems. The music has the simplicity of the Fantasticks but casts a mood that is less comedy and more eerie. It brings to mind the Rossetti poem which is charged with imagery. There is nothing frivoulous or hoaky about this recording. it is beautiful and simple and extremely soft and memorable. It gives youthe feeling of living in a pre-Raphaelite painting, biting into colorful fruits and drifitng alond a riverbank like the Lady of Shallot. Goblin Market is like a beautiful dream you can revisit again and again. Really perfect.
