From Jazziz
Made up of bassist Duval, cellist Tomas Ulrich, violinist Jason Hwang, and violist Ron Lawrence, the C.T. [Cecil Taylor] String Quartet was formed by Duval to perform Taylor's string music. Although the compositions here are either by the quartet or by Perelman, the music lives up to its namesake: dense and multi-layered. It's dark and foreboding as well.
The pieces on The Navigator vaguely sound like some 20th-century classical compositions, and, like such music, masterful patience is needed to crack this music's difficult surface. In parts, it's worth it: The plucking of "Pizzicato" is beautiful and "Allure"'s slowly shifting textures will enthrall. Occasionally though, similar timbres of these instruments create a musical density bereft of sonic tension. While scratchy strings sounding like a slowly opening rusty door is a fascinating idea, it will appeal to those who enjoy long bursts of a dense barrage.
With Perelman on tenor sax, the overall mood brightens, but the group's density still overwhelms. Once again, the music - in eight parts - is a brooding swirling soup, with Perelman up front, squealing, spitting out short fragments or longer melodic runs. The music works well when he does the latter, once seemingly quoting the standard "Just Friends." Too often, however, he does the former, which, although it has its places, gives the music a slightly gratuitous character.
