Island music.......2007-04-19
Quite possibly one of their best recordings, "Three Wishes" features the signature sound of Spyro Gyra that is polished, robust, laid-back smooth jazz. From the early nineties, this disc has Dave Samuels contributing effectively on vibes and marimbas to give their music that island feel. The music on this disc , in retrospect is like something you might here for an ad on visting some exotic tropical island. Spyro Gyra was always able to balance smooth jazz and jazz in a tasteful manner, incorporating both elements while infusing funk. The SG classic song "Breathless" is featured here with it's acoustic piano opening followed by Beckenstein's horn , funky bass and the alluring vibes of Samuels. Another standout song is the title track "Three Wishes " that features some very inspirational vibe work by Samuels that echoes Cal Tjader. All in all this is a good disc for some early Spyro Gyra. Very cool stuff after all these years. What is amazing is that they are stil making music and according to some reviews at the top of their game. Recommended for smooth jazz lovers or when you are, planning, dreaming or visiting some exotic beach.
musianship at the highest level.......2006-10-28
You cannot go wrong with this album, this is for the serious listener, its an album to enjoy and live it though. It had to be from the GRP label. Not very easy to find, so get it while its available.
A wonderful surprise about this album, try it with your teen son7daughter, my boy just loves it, and this comes as a surprise to me
A review of Spyro Gyra's Three Wishes........2003-05-31
Three wishes is not a very good Spyro Gyra album. It was released in 1992. Back then, there music was good, but I don't know what happened on this cd. Most of the tracks sound repetitive, and it places wat too much emphasis on the piano. Plus some of the songs can actually put you to sleep. A few tracks are very slow and sound very similar to each other. Other songs are ridiculously short in time duration. This isn't typical Spyro Gyra. The jazz is too 'smooth'. There are some exceptions on this record, however.
My top 3 favorite songs from this cd would be tracks 7,9, and 11. Whitewater is a good upbeat song with a good tempo and playing by the musicians. Nothing To Lose is the best song on this whole album. It has a great title and solos in it. Most notably, the guitat part. Gliding has a powerful melody and is a nice addition to this cd, with a terrific keyboard part. There are also a couple of other good songs on it.
Three Wishes would have to be my least favorite Spyro Gyra album that I have listened to so far. I am experienced in Spyro Gyra, as well. You should only obtain a copy of this cd if you are a die hard Spyro Gyra fan, like me. If not, look for something better. Thank you for taking the time and generosity to read my review.
Real Smooth-Maybe Their Best.......2002-09-27
This Spyro Gyra CD features the band at peak performance. Each band member makes his presence felt as guitars, marimbas, bass, drums, keys, and brass are all on equal ground here. And oh what lovely tones.
Some fast and some slow but all are good. Pipo's Song, Jennifer's Lullaby, and Breathless are just some of the many highlights. Grooves galore and spunky melodies by the score. This one will make my wish list and you should add it too.
FAR BEYOND THE TYPICAL SPYRO GYRATION!!!!.......2000-08-16
This album is a phenomenal piece of articulate jazz and latin blends. I own most of this band's music, but this one blew me away. The songs on this record vary in attitude and feel. The rhythm is tighter and more fluid than ever, and seems as if the band really put their heads and hearts together!!!! I could best describe this album as slightly moody and dark with hints of bright upbeat chordal drifts.....VERY UNLIKE THEIR CURRENT SMOOTH AND BLAND "OUT OF A CAN" VERSION OF JAZZ!! I still love these guys and they are multi-talented, but I SURELY WISH THEY WOULD "FIND THE MAGIC" OF THIS SWEET RELEASE.
AND BY THE WAY.....WHY IS IT EVERY NEW JAZZ SONG, TODAY, SOUNDS THE SAME---HAVE THE CORPORATE RECORD "BIZ" PIGS FOUND A NEW HOME TO MANIPULATE?? LIKE THEY DID TO COMTEMPORARY HIT MUSIC IN THE 1990'S????!!!!!

Maybe "The Army Mule Song" isn't exactly Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Soliloquy," but Three Wishes for Jamie is still worth hearing for the voice of the great John Raitt (Carousel, The Pajama Game). It's a Brigadoon-ish fantasy about a Irishman granted three wishes by a fairy queen, and the songs by Ralph Blane (Meet Me in St. Louis) might remind you of other songs of the time: "My Heart's Darlin'" ("If I Loved You"), "Goin' on a Hayride" ("The Surrey with the Fringe on Top"), "It Must Be Spring" ("Spring Is Bustin' Out All Over"). The excellent liner notes explain the show's long trip to Broadway, where it ran for only 92 performances in 1952. Ann Jeffreys (Street Scene) co-stars as Jamie's American wife, Maeve Harrigan. --David Horiuchi
Customer Reviews:
BROADWAY LEGEND JOHN RAITT AT HIS PEAK . . . . . .......2006-08-23
"A charming and whimsical musical fantasy -- a bit like BRIGADOON, a bit like FINIAN'S RAINBOW, a bit like PAINT YOUR WAGON . . ." These words appear on the jacket of 1993 Broadway Angel release of THREE WISHES FOR JAMIE -- perhaps in an effort to entice Broadway cast album collectors to buy a show they probably never heard of.
After a fairly disastrous run at the Los Angeles and San Francisco Light Opera companies during the summer of 1951, the producers cancelled the projected Broadway opening, and THREE WISHES FOR JAMIE underwent extensive revisions. Abe Burrows (GUYS & DOLLS) was brought in to rework Charles O'Neal's book, and several of the leads were recast. Former opera soprano Anne Jeffreys replaced Marion Bell (BRIGADOON), and Hugh Wheeler took over the part of the matchmaker, Owen Roe Tavish, from Cecil Kellaway (LUCK OF THE IRISH). Fortunately, John Raitt - who had "been swept to stardom" in CAROUSEL (1945) and appeared (briefly) in MAGDALENA (1948) - was available, having turned down a secondary part in SOUTH PACIFIC.
It is John Raitt's magnificent singing that, for me, is the major reason for listening to THREE WISHES FOR JAMIE. "John Raitt possessed possibly the finest male voice on Broadway at that or any other time, a perfect instrument with the deft grace of a lyric baritone but with a tenor's ringing high notes." (from David Foil's excellent notes for the Broadway Angel CD) Ralph Blaine must have had Raitt in mind when he thought of writing the score, for they fit Raitt like the proverbial glove: "The Girl That I Court in My Mind," "My Heart's Darlin'" (sung with Ms. Jeffreys), "The Army Mule Song," "It's a Wishing World." Wheeler, Jeffreys, Peter Conlow and the rest of the ensemble are also first rate, and there's the added bonus of the incredible Charlotte Rae, even though "Love Has Nothing To Do with Looks" is embarrassingly misogynistic by today's standards.
So, I urge you to ignore the opening quote and to enjoy THREE WISHES FOR JAMIE for what it is: a charming show with a pleasant, if not memorable, score. With Broadway Legend John Raitt at his peak, and a supporting cast who are apparently having a wonderful time, JAMIE is fine listening, indeed. It's a wonder that more community theatre groups haven't staged the show. Perhaps, with this fresh recording, THREE WISHES FOR JAMIE will see new life on the stage.
Recommended.
(These comments are about the 1993 Broadway Angel recording. I have great confidence in DRG's remastering capability, which will undoubtedly improve the somewhat flat sound of the recording.)

5 stars isn't enough.......2006-06-12
This is a wonderful album - - one of my favorites. I keep going back to it, as time passes, and playing it again and again. Every song is a perfect combination of lyrics that can sweep you up in their poetry and music that is poignant and tough and beautiful and catches the heart. From the first song, Elbow to Elbow, with its vision of love, precarious and glorious, to the end of the album, so much is said that just stays on in your mind, afterwards.
I recommend this album without reservation. Buy it, if you can. Its fantastic.
I wish there were more stars to give this one! .......2005-12-07
This is one of my all time favorite CD's. I could listen to it over and over again. I picked it up in the local artists section back in the 90's. Not Athena is one of the greatest songs... ever. Why, oh why, do people like Brittney Spears make it big and not someone with as much talent as Shannon Worrell???
Beautiful.......2004-05-07
I'm friends with Shannon but heard her music on the radio before I ever met her. While my friends expound upon the quality of the lyrics of Bright Eyes, Modest Mouse, and all the recent "introspective singer/songwriter" types I know Shannon Worrell's lyrics (more like poetry) reach leaps and bounds above those of any other artist I've heard. This music is the whole package, inspiring lyricism and emotional vocals. I'm really not kidding... you'll think Sarah McLachlan and Sheryl Crow (and basically anyone else) might as well be singing MMMBop after listening to Shannon's music.
PS This album is even a must have for Dave Matthews fanatics...he sings (beautifully) on several tracks.
Extraordinary.......2003-02-20
This album came out in the early or mid 90s but it sounds as good today as it did then. I have worn out copy after copy. A friend knew of Shannon's music and turned me on to it and I've beena fan ever since. The music doesn't really have a comparison in popular music - her style is really her own. I can't recommend this one enough.

Erica Wheeler's "Three Wishes" great songs + wonderful voice.......2000-11-07
From the first track "Onward from Here" to the last, "Saturday" this is one fine recording. I will now, after hearing this, go and find her earlier recorded work. She plays very well and writes really good songs. Erica wrote all the tracks on this CD except for "Angeline" (by James McMurtry) and "Casey, Illinois" (by Bill Morrissey). So far I enjoy the track "Nowhere to Go" the most. She has a clear and soaring country-flavored voice. Erica Wheeler is a fine songwriter and a wonderful singer, go get this CD and you will not be disappointed.
A musical and song-writing triumph.......1999-07-20
Erica Wheeler is the next Bonnie Raitt, and Three Wishes is her breakthrough recording. I've listened to Three Wishes dozens of times and still enjoy it tremendously. Check out Onward from Here, the story of Jack's Tavern, the lyrics and music of Angels and the quiet pleasure of Solace of a Prayer. There's Nowhere to Go but to the nearest store, on-line or otherwise, to buy this CD. Happy listening.

Customer Reviews:
Classic Miki.......2004-11-17
Though this cd did not sell like her previous albums, it is pure perfection and magoc done in Miki's trademark style. Her voice has matured considerably while the music business transformed from classic soul to hip-hop, and therefore, this gem was overlooked. If the song "Nobody" had been released during her prime, it is no doubt that it would have headed towards the upper regions of the charts. In fact, there is not a single bad cut on the cd. "Kiss Of a Stranger" is a stand out with its jazz leanings. And the cd overall focuses on ballads which is where Ms. Howard excels. Finally free of what the studio executives have tried to mold her into for years, this is her best and finest work. It was also nominated in the Best Traditional R&B album losing to Glady Knight, another true soul singer.
Fine.......2004-01-11
I discovered Miki with this CD and don't know her others (yet). Maybe she was stronger before, but I already like this CD much. It's thoughtful, it's well sung and it conveys emotions. If you have no clue about Miki at all, maybe you can say this CD reminds a bit of Toni Braxton (the better stuff of hers)
Give it a second shot.......2003-01-31
Upon my original purchase of this CD, I thought it was horrible and I tossed it aside for three months. After listening to some old Miki, I decided to give this one a second try; and I'm glad I did. True it's a different Miki, but I encourage you to give it a second shot, there is no-way you should be dissappointed the second time around. #'s 1,5 & 9 are especially great if you listen to what she's really talking about.
Miki is back!!!.......2002-07-06
Although this album does not compare to here earlier recordings, Miki Howard launched back in to the wortld of R&B with this CD that any Miki fan MUST own. When I accidently ran across this CD I knew I had to buy it. I have not regretted that decision. This album earned Miki a Grammy nomination although it received lackluster airplay on urban radio. In a world filled with one hit wonders, and half dressed mediocre singers, it is good to know the true divas are still out there doing their thing. You can feel Miki's passion in "On Day Without You" as well her fun side on " Meant to Be". Much props to Miki Howard!!
Miki is still doing her thing.......2002-03-27
I bought this album with high hopes of it being another great milestone in Miki's career. Even though the reviews weren't so good I decided to give it a chance anyway. I was not dissapointed. Miki is like every other human being in the world, she changes. Her music has changed. She is older. Miki has earned her right to make music the way she wants to make it. Being a true Miki fan I can appreciate that. In my opinion, if you are a fan, you will feel where she is coming from and what she is saying. These songs may not be as commercial as her previous albums, perhaps that is the charm I see in it. Keep on keeping on Miki. I love the music you make!!!!!
