unplugged and alone.......2007-05-08
"The Truth About Hollywood" is an avant-garde journey into the mind of Brian Haas. This first solo album marks a new musical direction. Haas typically pounds the keys of his Fender Rhodes with the Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey. In this environment, solo piano is the vehicle. Naturally, this solo acoustic approach has benefits and drawbacks. In terms of drawbacks, there is a noticeable gap left by the absence of Jason Smart's drums and Reed Mathis' bass. Also, the non-electric environment neutralizes the pianist's usual pyschedelia. In terms of the benefits, Brian Haas' solo acoustic sound is gorgeous. His tone and rhythm translate in a way not possible in an electric environment. Fortunately, there is no melodica. This freshman release goes above and beyond giving a nod to Thelonious Monk. The four Monk compositions comprise the strongest tracks. "The Truth About Hollywood" is opened with 'Rhythm-A-Ning,' one of the disc's highlights. As with 'I Mean You,' some of the tunes sound like they were played while Haas was possessed by the ghost of George Gershwin. This unexpected treatment is deeply satisfying. Presumably, 'Jeni' honors Haas' wife. "The Truth About Hollywood" works in two parts. There is part one that comprises the first eight tracks. This half of the album is strong. The twenty minute title track constitutes the other half of the album. This piece is a self-indulgent wandering through the keys. The listener is dragged along with the pianist while he loses himself in an avant-garde maze. Without this track, the rest of the disc would easily earn four starts. While "The Truth About Hollywood" has strengths and weaknesses, it will undeniably appeal to Monk Mongers and Fred Heads.
