5 out of 5 stars A good value.......2007-05-17

I wasn't expecting to have 4 discs for this price, and the music is a quality selection of film music, giving a good scope of the genre, and a very listenable transfer.

4 out of 5 stars The Sound Track Since Bernard Hermann.......2006-07-25

This collection is bound to capture your heart and evoke a tin ear on successive tracks. I found much to like and some duds - easy to skip over.
Very good value.

I'm a big fan of this soundtrack music and will be looking for more CD's like this.

4 out of 5 stars A mixed collection of movie music.......2006-02-23

For the price, this CD is a great bargain. The musical selections, as you might expect, are mixed in quality ranging from extraordinary to so so, the balance being worthwhile and interesting. Sonically the CD is excellent.

4 out of 5 stars Somebody Help Me!.......2007-06-18

I am searching for the song that plays during the birthday scene right after the baloon pops. Not during the beginning.. As that is "Head" by Tinstar. It's a heavy metal beat and sounds awesome. Somebody please help me! Thanks!

5 out of 5 stars Great soundtrack!.......2006-11-10

I love this soundtrack--it really takes me back into the movie, which is what a good movie soundtrack should do.

3 out of 5 stars good score on a cheapjack label.......2006-06-03

Varese Sarabande, the label that issued this soundtrack, has a history of castrating good scores in order to save money..some years ago,in an article in Filmscore Monthly ,this issue was brought up,and the owners of the label,a bunch of good-for-nothings who make money off those who like film music while notoriously short-changing them at every opportunity, defended thier consistent efforts to hold the length of thier soundtrack releases at or about thirty minutes...thier view was and remains, that they would have to pay higher rates to the orchestras involved if they put out FULL SCORE SOUNDTRACKS..overtime is a killer, according to these label executives, and,as far as they are concerned,it is better for thier label to release butchered scores, missing main titles and other assorted cues, than to give the public what it has heard on-screen,and what it EXPECTS to hear when purchasing a soundtrack album. The fact that SOME of newton-Howard's music survives on this disc is the ONLY excuse for buying the album, and, because the album is incomplete,it should be purchased USED and as cheaply as possible(which,by the way,is a good rule of thumb for purchasing ANY varese product)...

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic "despair and sadness" work by Howard.......2003-07-11

I have to agree with 95% of the reviews already written on this recording. The despair, sadness and torment are front and center in this collection. You have to be in the right frame of mind to really enjoy the message of darkness and gloom. The track that made me buy the CD was "De Profundis". This delicate flow of misery with the sinking cellos and basses during the minor key change took my musical spirit to another place. It was divine.

I really appreciate his Howard's use of low volumes to convey his thoughts. He fully understands that pianissimo (pp) can hit just as hard as a full throttled forte (fff).

Although the music and concept deserve a five star rating, the record company really [disappointed] the buyers by only including 29 minutes on the disc. This, sadly, makes this THE SHORTEST soundtrack I own and one of the THE SHORTEST soundtracks on the market. :(

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful........2001-09-09

This is one of the most depressing soundtracks I have ever heard, and for that, the seizing quality of the instruments, the wild passion of the entire album - it makes it not something to listen to when you're feeling depressed. It has drawn me into severe melancholy because of its power. I'm absolutely in awe of it. One of the many things about it, however, is the variety of the songs. There is a distinct and marked change to every song, no matter how subtle, and it sweeps you away like a riptide. Without a doubt, listen to this cd. You will probably cry. See the movie, too. Very well done.

5 out of 5 stars Great Lee Morgan Hardbop session.......2005-01-05

If Lee was ever asked to record an albums so good that it would smoke all others, I have no doubt that he would say yes and keep his promise. "Sixth Sense" is one of those albums, it keeps knocking you in the head until you give in. I once asked a friend about Lee's later albums and he had his doubts but after listening to this, it becomes extremely hard to say no. Title track has a sort of quasi-bossa beat but it doesn't bear the feeling of his other Sidewinderish type tunes such as "Cornbread" or "Yes I can no you can't". The 3M front line (Morgan, Mitchell, Mclean) has a sharp and powerful drive. Higgins and Walton, two Morgan stalwarts, were perfect for the job. Higgins especially since he laid down the beat so heavily. The second session isn't quite as powerful as the first but has similar execution. Five notes for another great hardbop session from Lee.

5 out of 5 stars Sixth Sense mogie.......2004-11-07

Great album from 2 session 1967 and 68,
featuring Lee, Jackie Mclean, Cedar Walton, Billy Higgins.
notables are "Psychedelic" and "The cry of the people", a nice range of music on this album. If You like "Lee Morgan" You want this album in the collection, also check out "Charisma" from 1966, and of course early stuff like candy, the cooker, leeway, and all the art blakey era.

Also worth noting that no matter who Lee played for, he is always listed first in order of musicians, with the exception of "Bluetrain" where Coltrane is listed first.

4 out of 5 stars This RVG Makes Less "Sense".......2004-07-13

Unlike most of the recent batch of RVG releases (6/29 & 7/13/04), trumpeter Lee Morgan's "The Sixth Sense" hasn't been out-of-print for years, as it was first released on CD relatively recently in 1999. While there are certainly more deserving titles currently languishing in the Blue Note vaults, it is good to have this remastered reissue back in the catalog nonetheless. The best thing about this CD is it is actually two sessions. The original album, recorded on November 10, 1967 with Jackie McLean on alto sax, Frank Mitchell on tenor sax, Cedar Walton on piano, Victor Sproles on bass and Billy Higgins on drums, featured this disc's first six tracks. The original CD incarnation, as well as this new RVG title, also issued for the first time the three successful tracks (7-9 here) from a September 13, 1968 session again featuring the Morgan-Mitchell partnership, this time with pianist Harold Mabern and bassist Mickey Bass joining Higgins. Both sessions from "The Sixth Sense" are similar in style and format to other 67/68 Morgan titles like "Sonic Boom" and "Caramba" (see my reviews). However, my reason for withholding a fifth star is that this title doesn't come close to equaling Lee's best recording of this period, the inventive "Procrastinator." Of course, fans of Morgan's funky-boogaloo meets solid post-bop style will easily make sense of "The Sixth Sense."

    Product Description

Russian band with a variable number of musicians, LITTLE TRAGEDIES was born from the will of composer and musician Gennadi ILYIN to experiment new musical expression forms. More particularly, his art could be described as an hybrid mixture of Seventies-like Progressive rock, fusion jazz-rock and contemporary classical musics. The whole thing played through vintage keyboards reminding of the seventies, but especially with an obvious Slavonic personality. Released in 2005 by the Musea label, "Return" is the third and certainly the best work of LITTLE TRAGEDIES. Like the previous albums, the latter was inspired by poems of Nicolai GUMILEV and sung in Russian. The eleven titles have a style close to that of EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER, with an impressive musical virtuosity and a strong originality. Here is a fantastic concept-album of powerful neo-classical rock, rich in diversity and intensity, filled with feverish and enthusiast instrumental sequences. This absolutely needs to be discovered ! Only a few weeks were needed, after the ambitious conceptual double-CD "New Faust" (2006), for the new opus "The Sixth Sense" to be published. It shows an incredible progression, with a much more varied inspiration. Apart from EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER and the classical composers, one could think of PINK FLOYD, GENESIS ou FOCUS, with the characteristic sound of the Russian bands. The music is a brilliant mix of rock, classical music and jazz, with heavy-metal traces in some guitar riffs. Keyboards parts are very keen on Seventies sounds. If the vocals are in Russian, the music is mostly instrumental, played with brio and carefully produced. An excellent album !

    5 out of 5 stars FANS ONLY!!!.......2005-10-27

For the real meaning of Latin music, some artists are ESSENTIAL and MILESTONES. Celia Cruz, Gloria Estefan and Thalia are the true perfection of what it means to be a LATIN and they are far beyond compare with any other so called "Latino Celebrity". To get to listen good piece of music, you can always count on these artists.

But our time is more tabloid than ever. I hope it passes someday. What major American people are interested in is publicity whores and tabloid gossips instead of the real music. They consume music as if they are changing their sheets. It is nothing to be ashamed of, yet it is not classy.

Thalia is a unique artist who can sing. Yet, Thalia has always been some kind of "ignoring" about her career. She tries to be everything at the same time. She triest to show that she is in to all the things that a mainstream artist is; singing, acting, commercials, products, materials. But, Thalia also is an artist that does not care about her career. Since 2002, Thalia's products of art are less of her focus than her publicity stuff.

Thalia started to turn-out to be a wannabe in 2003 and left her unique, classy, characteristic Latin style. 2003 release "Thalia" album (a/k/a English Crossover) was EMI's J.Lo wannabe insert; and now "The Sixth Sense (a/k/a El Sexto Sendito)" is half breed with Shakira and J.Lo.

Well, saying this doesn't make me lose my fame of being a Thalia Fan. But, objectivity is the key to scientificity. Thalia's album does not derive attention from zero beginner fans. Lyrics are not catchy, music is not giving, stories behind the lyrics do not compile with Thalia's own life... So, in the world of 2000's artists like Thalia should learn and revise themselves in order to get back their uniqe place in the more than honored and elite Latin music industry.

To try to CROSS OVER brings along the crash down. If you take it as a natural step and fill the SENSE of what you say, you sell approximately 14 million albums worldwide, as Shakira did. People smell the "production" these days, and "Sixth Sense" is nothing to do with Thalia or her anyways possible sense of sixth. Album is essential for fans, 'coz it's a selection item; yet don't get mad at me because the music is not AA stuff. It's like a BB or at most BA.

Rated by me FOR FANS ONLY.

+ PLUS!!! EMI should learn to develop their strategies because they remained so 90's in the industry. A total marketing ERROR.

My favorite tunes in this album is "Loca", "Un Alma Sentenciada", "You Know He Never Loved You" and "Seduction". Yet, all in all, I bought this version of "El Sexto Sendito" just because I wanted to have an official copy of "Amar Sin Ser Amada (Raggaeton Remix) featuring Hector El Bambino" and "Amar Sin Ser Amada" - "You Know He Never Loved You" videos. 'Coz, in my country and on amazon.com they did not sell "Amar Sin Ser Amada" Single CD. So, I had no way out to buy this EXPENSIVE version. For economy savers, "El Sexto Sendito" (CD+DVD) version would do the same. (I OWN BOTH)

      Album Description

"I'm proud to announce the release of my new studio CD MADLY OUT THE CABIN DOOR.. This is my second solo recording, although I've released over 15 others with Storyhill, Sixth Sense, and 2 Forms of ID. Many of the songs on 'MADLY...' were written while on songwriting retreats in the mountains of Montana. It includes a host of musicians on harmony vocals, bass, guitar, Hammond organ, and fiddle. The original artwork was painted by my co-producer Michael Blessing, who colorfully conveyed the messages within the songs. I hope you enjoy it!" -Chris

The straight-ahead style that had long characterized Blue Note records was going into eclipse in 1967 when Lee Morgan made The Sixth Sense. But the trumpeter was the style's master, mating forceful tunes and complex rhythms with an uncompromising directness. His lines always sound perfectly continuous with his thought, from clarion assertions to muffled, half-valve asides. The sextet is an excellent one, with Jackie McLean on alto and Cedar Walton on piano, while drummer Billy Higgins adds the verve that distinguished so many of Morgan's best records (including, of course, Sidewinder). Added to these luminaries is tenor saxophonist Frank Mitchell, then a member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, the same institution of higher learning from which the others had graduated. Mitchell soon faded into obscurity, but he was a striking presence here, with an approach very much like McLean's--terse, metallic, and intense. It adds a distinctive edge to both his solos and the ensembles. The group has a knack for strong rhythmic grooves, with the backbeat of "Psychedelic" recalling such Morgan-Higgins collaborations as "Sidewinder" and "Rumproller." Cedar Walton's "Afreaka" has sustained power, while Cal Massey's "The City of My People" is elegiac neogospel with beautiful, muted trumpet. The CD adds three tracks from an unreleased 1968 quintet session on which Morgan, Mitchell, and Higgins are joined by pianist Harold Mabern and bassist Mickey Bass for some equally convincing hard bop. --Stuart Broomer

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Superb Late Bop.......2002-04-25

I can't claim to know more than a portion of Lee Morgan's total output, but I have to say I have never heard anything of his that I don't like. And if I had to pick a favorite trumpeter at gunpoint, I would probably go with Lee over Miles--or anyone else, for that matter. (Except--let me add, in going over this review some time later--Clifford Brown.)

Warm confident tone, tight phrasing, lyrical melodic vocabulary, tasteful voicing--what more can you ask for? It is a terrible loss to music and the world that he--like so many of the jazz giants--died so young.

This CD version is a delight from beginning to end, and a good value with the bonus non-LP tracks. If you like Sixties bop and/or Lee Morgan I don't see how you can miss.

3 out of 5 stars The Sixth Sense.......2001-02-11

If you are a big fan of Lee Morgan and your collection doesn't include this CD I would sugguest you listen before you buy, I don't think that you are missing much if you don't have it. I think Morgan plays terrifically but I only found a couple of the songs to be interesting. The title track is exceptional and I bought the CD just for that song. If you are new to Lee Morgan I suggest that you check out Cornbread and the Gigolo and the ballad Carolyn on Hank Mobley's No Room for Squares. I think that it is in those recordings that you will really get a sense of the depth and range of Lee Morgan.

5 out of 5 stars Eggselent set of tunes.......2000-07-25

This CD is amazing! I picked it up from a $7.99 bin of CDs at Tower Records, along with several others, this past weekend. From the very beginning, I knew I was going to like this one. This is one everyone should have in their collection. Lee Morgan is really ripping it up along with his other cohorts Jackie McLean (alot sax), Frank Mitchell (tenor sax), Cedar Walton (piano), Victor Sproles (bass), and Billy Higgins (drums).

3 out of 5 stars Brilliant performer, pedestrian composer.......2000-03-04

I believe Lee Morgan to be one of the finest trumpet players. Ever. Composing, however, never struck me as his strong suit.

I just rec'd "The Sixth Sense" and gave it my first listen. Once again, Lee demonstrates incredible chops on his horn, but many of the songs themselves are simply not that interesting.

If you're a committed Morgan admirer, the disk is worth owning. If you like the bebop or hard bop styles and wish to sample some of his finer moments, check out "Sidewinder" or "Infinity". Better yet, delve into the sounds of his tenure w/ Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers.

Lee Morgan + Wayne Shorter = pure bliss.
