The British Black Lion label was a highly respected purveyor of bebop and hard-bop jazz during the 1960s and '70s. The folks at Hip Jazz-Bop have culled the vaults of Black Lion, packaged the music in snappy, faux-hip styles, and have issued a number of excellent compilations. Need a Guide?'s 10 selections feature a stellar cast of bop luminaries in a variety of styles. Trumpeters Freddie Hubbard and Kenny Dorham flash their chops on hard-bop cookers "Number Five" and "Why Not," respectively, while saxophonists Lee Konitz, Wardell Gray, Dexter Gordon, and Zoot Sims wax mellow on a bevy of ballads. Pianists Thelonious Monk (caught solo on a gorgeous "Darn That Dream") and Duke Pearson (crafty on "Jeannine") exploit their subtle craft, while Duke Ellington's big band ("Jump for Joy") exults in its orchestral colors. If you Need a Guide into the art of bop mastery, this CD is for you. --Wally Shoup
