About the Artist
Flautist, vocalist, composer, arranger, transcriptionist, and award winning master whistler Joel Brandon....

This CD project is a first effort on his part; however; Mr. Brandon has been active in the musical forefront nationally and internationally as a guest artist in various musical settings. He was a perennial winner of the national and international whistling contest, and was placed into their prestigious Whistlers Hall of Fame in 1997. He also received a letter of congratulations from then president, George H. Bush for his achievements. He's also been a highlight at major league baseball and NBA basketball games when he whistles the National Anthem. (upcoming game September 29th 2001 San Francisco Giants versus Padres) His whistling ability has been impressive enough that he has performed with major Symphony Orchestras across the country. "…extraordinarily beautiful tone and amazing flexibility, and possess strong individual musical sensibilities. Our pops audience, who was not prepared for this bonus attraction approved of Joel's performance with a standing ovation." Gideon Toeplitz, Executive Vice President & Managing Director, The Pittsburgh Symphony.

Brandon has performed with such jazz stalwarts as Eddie Harris, Billy Higgins, Bobby Hutcherson, Chet Baker, Melvin Rhyne, James Spaulding, Ramsey Lewis, Richie Cole, Famoudou Don Moye, Lester Bowie, and David Murray, to mention a few. Mr. Brandon's talents have not been confined to the jazz idiom as evidenced with his working experiences with the late Donny Hathaway, and the late Charles Stepney (Earth Wind and Fire, Minnie Riperton, the Dells, the Emotions, etc.) He has been a featured guest on numerous radio and TV talk shows, which highlighted his musical whistling technique. Some of the shows he's appeared on are: Good Morning America, NBC Nightly News w/Tom Brokaw, CNN Showbiz Entertainment Special, Joan Rivers Show, The Tonight Show w/Johnny Carson, and Live in LA. Frank Mathie of ABC network affiliate WLS (channel 7) in Chicago won an Emmy for a special interest story they filmed regarding Joel's unique whistling prowess. The San Francisco CBS affiliate KPIX's Evening Magazine will film a special interest story on Joel's whistling in conjunction with his upcoming appearance at the Giants ballgame. Recently performing at the Ocho Rios Jazz Festival Jamaica, the Jamaica Observer writes; "...Joel Brandon took patrons to commanding musical heights", "his was an incredible act of technique, intonation and style. Alternating the flute and his whistling with amazing flexibility, the extraordinary artist outdid himself on the old jazz standard ‘Bluesette'.” The London Times writes, "...he has to be the greatest whistler in jazz today".

He was voted in the Downbeat Magazines 40th Annual Critics Poll, under miscellaneous instruments, and the Smithsonian Magazine featured a major historical perspective on whistling, and Joel's unique technique was a key component in the article. Even the great legendary Toots Thielemans hails Mr. Brandon's whistling expertise. "…you are the whistler." Toots Thielemans

Not only does Joel excel as one of the worlds greatest jazz whistlers, but he is also an extraordinary flautist and formidable vocalist. He's following in the tradition of the multifaceted artists such as Mr. Thielemans (guitar, harmonica, whistler) by combining his talents to create a montage and unique experience for the listener.

Featured on this CD project is a cast of world-renowned talent. They are Willie Pickens on piano, Kirk Brown on keyboards, Keith Henderson on guitar, Harrison Bankhead on bass, Famoudou Don Moye on percussion, Morris Jennings on drums, and the late great legendary Mr. Billy Higgins on drums, in one of the last sessions of his prolific recording career.

As the writer, arranger, producer and performer on this project Joel Brandon is poised to make an indelible mark in the recording industry with "Haven't We All?"

Joel Brandon “Haven't We All…? S-SSD 0089

“Not only is he a mighty whistler, he is also a brilliant flute player, composer, arranger, orchestrator and transcriptionist…” Larry Smith, The All Night Jazz Host On Chicago Public Radio WBEZ-FM 91.5

Southport Records continues it's tradition of introducing bold new artists into the 21st century with Flutist/Vocalist/Composer and “Master Whistler” Joel Brandon and his new CD “Haven't We All…?”

Decades ago when whistlers were at the height of their popularity, they would appear at Carnegie Hall or offer their rendition of the national anthem for the Yankees. Brandon, a modern whistling innovator and holder of several national and international championship titles, including his induction to the “Whistlers Hall Of Fame” in 1997, blends traditional whistling with jazz/blues/latin and African modes of musical expression. A highlight of Joel's touring was a special guest segment on the Johnny Carson Show, and whistling at opening games for the San Francisco Giants.

Featured artists on the CD, a collaborative release between Southport, AECO and Katalyst Records, are a heavy international cast of players that include drummer Billy Higgins (sadly one of his last recordings), multi-percussionist and drummer Famoudou Don Moye, and Chicago keyboard giant Willie Pickens, along with Harrison Bankhead on bass, Kirk Brown on piano, Morris Jennings on drums, and Keith Henderson on guitar. Along with several superb examples of Brandon's whistling, he is also featured on flute and vocals, and all but two of the tracks are Brandon's original compositions.

As major record labels bow to the pressures of the economy and bad taste, Southport Records continues to record, produce and distribute new music, from Chicago, to a world audience. Media we appreciate your support of our musical mission!

5 out of 5 stars Joel Yoda Master Whistler Brandon.......2002-01-10

I heard Joel whistle for the first time in 1985 Carson City NV at the International Whistling Competition. I was blown away by his control of riffs and his ability to bridge rapid changes in tempo and keys are mind blowing. Haven't we all is a great first effort and is entertaining and shows Joel's multifaceted talents singing, playing the flute, rhyming and his unique signature style of whistling is the total package. Joel mixes his talents and has collaborated with some of the windy cities jazz greats to product what is a truly entertaining jazzy, educational, lyrical CD of original tracks for all ages. If you like jazz then you are going to love this album. If you like whistling you're really going to love this album. Move over and make some room Bobby McFerrin here comes Joel.
