The debut from Eastern Sun draws you into an intriguing web of solitude in the tradition of ambitronica masters like Brian Eno, Aphex Twin and Future Sound of London. Producers Brian Saitzyk and John Kelley from Moontribe fame have created a monumental soundtrack full of light and darkness. "Rapture at Sea" is an instant anthemic downtempo classic full of sonic grace and dubbed out rhythm. Tracks like "Beautiful Being" and "Northern Vision" introduce organics like vocals and guitars into the midst of lush electronic pads and electro beats. Eastern influenced "To the Sun" is a dark, sonically twisted trip down the River Ganges. Much deeper than say a Café Del Mar comp, the production is nice and glitchy as digital trickles of IDM make sure the listener is always challenged. As a whole, In Emptiness is an impressive accomplishment with uplifting substance residing in the beautiful void.

Sudan's Hamza El Din is a master of the oud (a fretless forerunner of the lute), and the man who first introduced Americans to the instrument in the '60s. On this, his first album in three years, his playing is as wonderful and mesmerizing as ever--you can almost feel his fingers touching the strings. While some of the pieces are formal and classical in a Middle Eastern manner, on others he takes flight, using his virtuosity to travel through the whole gamut of emotions in a way that would leave most guitarists in the dust. It all ends on an odd note, however, with a piece that's lovely, but almost New Age in its sweeping melodicism, and which might just (finally) break El Din to a wider audience. --Chris Nickson

This cd has incredibly natural sound, and is very, very beautiful. Deep dark rich bass notes, soft percussion, soulful voice.... Just awesome.

Hamza El Din is quickly becoming famous. I bought this album first and really liked it but it was not until I saw PASSION IN THE DESERT that I really began to appreciate his mastery in a new light. All his albums are great.

"A wish" is a master piece. I listened to some reviews about Hamza El Din prior to purchasing the CD and I thought that all excellent comments were still uderstatements to the beauty of this music. Highly recommended.

      Beautiful Being is essentially a maxi-single consisting of four mixes of one of the showcase tracks from Eastern Sun's debut album, In Emptiness, along with two non-album tracks, "Intersubjective Collective" and "Dematerialization." The four mixes of the title track are different enough from each other to make them an enjoyable listen one right after the other, thanks in part to the creative mixology and in part to the lovely vocals of Monica Hayes; the "Linnear Fractal Chill Mix" is both the funkiest and the most drastic deconstruction of the four. "Intersubjective Collective" is dreamy and dubwise, and the nine-minute-long "Dematerialization" borders on the spookily dark and is devoid of beats (though not of rhythm). This EP is a fine companion piece to a very enjoyable album.

      This tripe is not even in the same ball park as Loreena McKennitt. Lame production, lame recording, terrible composition, mediocre performances, but other than that it.....well, stinks frankly. I can't think of anything good to say about this pathetic immitation of a wonderful genre of music. I bought it based on favorable reviews. People who like this stuff should not be trying to influence others, rather go back to their Yanni and pretend to be enlightened while they sip weak green tea and burn toxic cheap incense and candles from Pier One.

      Nana [Simopoulos], minus her last name and plus a number of new musical friends, returns for another foray down the misty, musical pathways of her fertile imagination. Her exotic, contemplative compositions for strings, winds, voice and percussion are rooted in ethnic traditions from around the world, but are enhanced by modern jazzy flavors and improvisational flourish. The fusion of eastern and western musical styles is apparent simply by the noting the variety of instruments contributing to this album: sitar, bouzouki, tanpura, fretless guitar, sarangi, bansuri flutes, clarinet, pan flute, Apache spirit flute, Chinese flute, bass flute, hammered dulcimer, violin, cello, bass, tablas, glass armonica, udu, digeridu, toms and other world percussion, with vocals, chants and spoken Greek rounding out the soundscape. Guest artists include Ustad Sultan Khan on sarangi and vocals, Steve Gorn on flutes, and percussionist Arto Tuncboyacian. Nana and friends can also be heard in her previous release, "After the Moon", and if you enjoy their work, you might also like that of the innovative Persian group, Axiom of Choice.

      From the shining, delighted music of the first song to other songs with percussion so extremely meditative in such a gorgeous way it becomes almost sullen, Nina Simopoulos takes instruments & sounds from all over the world to create an impressive melange. The music is very spicy. Cobras would dance to it. There are distinctly Persian sequences, & an array of flutes including Apache spirit flutes & pan flutes. There are didgeridoos & tanpuras, classic droning instruments from Aboriginal & Indian [of India] cultures. Tablas, violin, keyboard. There are many more, used to create something marvelous. I can't honestly say it's the MOST talented or brilliant album I have from this loose genre of music, but it is very interesting, & that is reflected in how well it sells.
