Editorial Reviews
Dave Nathan, AMG
Simpkins' way with this music comes naturally. This album is a tasty gumbo of jazz and is recommended.
Product Description
Tenor saxophonist Nat Simpkins brings his Bluejay Records machine down to New Orleans for his latest offering, "Crescent City". Simpkins has that big Texas Tenor sound tempered by a touch of Southern hospitality. Add in the relaxed atmosphere of the Big Easy, and guest appearances by some of the hottest modern day New Orleans players around, and the recipe produces a spicy stew that lives up to the otherwise cliche of jazz as a rich New Orleans gumbo.
Nat has been visiting New Orleans for a few years now, and he always has felt right at home. The southern culture fits with his Bermuda roots, and in the Crescent City the music is in the air, on the streets, and anywhere you look. On this latest visit, he went in to the recording studio for sessions that the vocalist Henri Smith helped arrange with local musicians. (Henri's album, "New Orleans Friends and Flavours" from these sessions is also being released on Bluejay.) The rhythm section is the basis of all fine recordings, and the section here cooks. Nat's Bluejay cohort Cecil Brooks III is along for the ride, and with his drums he brings a colorful palette of polyphony into the mix. Local musicians Peter Martin on piano and Roland Guerin on bass (from Nicholas Payton's band among other New Orleans credits) join Brooks. While it is the first time that they played together, they immediately jelled with a power and sophistication that match Cecil's New York collaborations. ! Some of the tunes feature Simpkins alone in front of this rhythm section, but the album doesn't stop right there. The date also includes New Orleans stalwarts Anthony Tuba Fats Lacen, Kermit Ruffins, and Jason Marsalis.

Jumpin' Johnny Sansone released Crescent City Moon on his own Shortstack label in 1996, but it inspired such a positive buzz on the blues circuit that Rounder's Bullseye Blues label decided to pick it up and give it the national distribution it deserves. Like the better known John Mooney, Sansone takes the Mississippi-Chicago tradition of the blues and infuses it with New Orleans second-line rhythms that transform the genre completely. Sansone plays harmonica and accordion and sings in a gruff, authoritative baritone, but everything he does is locked into the syncopated beats that get the party going in his native Louisiana. The album features guest appearances by such local stars as slide guitarist Sonny Landreth, pianist Jon Cleary, and the Iguanas, but Sansone dominates the proceedings. He wrote 11 of the dozen tunes and he produced them all. He pays tribute to fellow Louisianan Slim Harpo with the fat harmonica tone and swamp-boogie beat of "Crawfish Walk." Fats Domino meets Buckwheat Zydeco when Sansone's squeezebox and the Iguanas' horns hook up on the well-greased New Orleans R&B of "Your Kind of Love." The push-and-pull, Professor Longhair shuffle of "Give Me a Dollar" perfectly evokes the hustlers who tapdance for dollars in New Orleans' Jackson Square. For all his Gulf Coast influences, however, Sansone can still turn in a good impersonation of Sonny Boy Williamson and Little Walter as he does on "The Talkin' Is Over (The Walkin' Has Begun)." --Geoffrey Himes

Amazon.com essential recording
Christmas jazz albums come and go with each end-of-year holiday season. And while they may make for good soundtracks to that holiday spirit, rarely do they stand up as much more than that, and certainly not as anything approaching a serious listen. While the material here may be rendered in the familiar Christmas spirit of good cheer (check out Wynton Marsalis on the back cover with mismatched green and red socks decking out his white suit), and the songs are in the familiar Christian tradition of the holiday, the arrangements are fresh and are delivered with memorable turns on "Silent Night" by opera diva Kathleen Battle, and on "Sleigh Ride" by Jon Hendricks. The playing is spirited and the material is dealt with in a manner suggesting great care in both delivery and arrangement. --Willard Jenkins
