About the Artist
Influenced by the romantic crooning of Chet Baker and Mel Tormé as well as the more radical scat singing and vocalese of Mark Murphy and Jon Hendricks, Lou Lanza developed a personal and distinctive voice early in his career. When Lanza acquired a small following playing the Philadelphia jazz circuit in the mid-'90s, he was often asked if he was related to another Philly native, opera singer Mario Lanza; in fact, the two are unrelated. However, Lanza's own family was quite musical: his parents, pianist Joan Trombetta-Lanza and violinist and longtime Philadelphia Orchestra member Louis Lanza Jr., were both classical musicians, while his uncle, Vince Trombetta, was a jazz saxophonist and music teacher whose students included Michael and Randy Brecker and Stanley Clarke. With Trombetta encouraging Lanza's interest in jazz, Lanza studied with such Philadelphians as guitarist Jimmy Bruno and tenor saxman Larry McKenna, and became a fixture in the city's jazz clubs.

Review by Alex Henderson Lou Lanza showed a lot of promise on his debut album, The Road Not Taken, but he outdid himself on his excellent sophomore date Corner Pocket. The Philadelphian, who was 26 when this CD was recorded, once again demonstrated how sensitive and vulnerable a ballad singer he could be — "You Don't Know What Love Is" and "A Ballad for You" are warm and heartfelt ballad statements. But this time, Lanza provided a lot more scat singing and vocalese and took a lot more chances. The singer has no problem flowing with the flexibility of a hard bop horn player when he embraces Jon Hendricks' lyrics to Dizzy Gillespie's "A Night in Tunisia" and Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson's "Four," and on Oliver Nelson's "Stolen Moments" (which is part of a medley that also includes Benny Golson's "Whisper Not"), he successfully tackles Mark Murphy's lyrics and adds some of his own. Eclectic and highly unpredictable, Corner Pocket is the best album to start out with if you're exploring Lanza's 1990s output.

5 out of 5 stars A long overdue collection by one of the English masters of the clarinet........2007-01-05

The Yorkshireman Reg Kell became famous for using vibrato in the classical world when it was unfashionable. He used it tastefully, and other artists such as Jack Brymer and Emma Johnson have continued to use it. He also had a series of tutorials with Benny Goodman (for Goodman's benefit) which led to Goodman changing his embouchure from the upper teeth on mouthpiece to the upper lip - as well as lower, -on mouthpiece, which perhaps in Goodmans's case was not a good move, as he had it right the first time!.

However these recordings originally came out a very long time ago in the early days of vinyl, and a re-issue is long overdue. Kell's excursion in to light music is interesting, though he stops well short of anything resembling jazz, although he had earlier recorded one record with Bert Ambrose's band in the 1940 which was the nearest he got, - but that is not included here. His main forte is in the works of Mozart, Weber, Beethoven and Brahms, but he also plays Bartok and Templeton. It shows what an accomplished performer he was. All were recorded after he left the UK to live and play in America.

This set shows his rightful place as a performer in the history of clarinet playing. He had raised the standard of the time, and had the benefits of improved recording techniques and length of play boudaries were removed with the LP record.

My only negative comment is that he rushes some of the runs; everything else is great!

The sound suffers here because of the live environment. On the other hand, you can reproduce the "club" environment with surroundsound in your livingroom. If you don't care for Li'l Darling (as one reviewer below), then you just don't like the slow-easy-with-space approach of the Basie-Hefti alliance. Compare with Juggernaut: In a Hefti Bag.

5 out of 5 stars Great "LIVE" big band recording.......2003-01-10

Love this album. It amazes me though, that the crowd in the background is talking and drinking while this great band is performing (like they get to see Basie every night). The recording is not enhanced or particularly well done, but captures the "Live" sound exactly as it was. You can hear on these tracks what made Count Basie great.

I was somewhat disappointed by this album. This is my 2nd Basie album while the 1st one I purchsed is "AIN'T MISBEHAVIN" which is FAR better!

First the good news: The musicianship of this band is second to none and live performances are tough and exhausting.

Why was I disappointed? The songs, especially the ones by HEFTI, are mediocre. Neil Hefti was an important arranger for Basie but not a good songwriter.

The sound on this CD is not good either. You can almost not hear Freddie Green and the horns could be balanced better and the recording just sounds dry - no reverb, no echo - nothing.

I'm gonna check out the VERVE releases and maybe some later live recordings of Basie..hope they'll be better.

5 out of 5 stars Six bucks!? How can you not go for it?.......2001-07-04

This was a very good album. Basie's stuff is always better live, and I strongly recommend this one. You get a couple of tracks from "April in Paris" that really come alive in a live setting ("Corner Pocket," "Sweety Cake"). There's some new stuff I hadn't seen before, like the trumpet feature "Pensive Miss," which I really liked. Great versions of "Li'l Darlin" and "Cute." Strong Neal Hefti songs round out the album. My favorite track, though, is the baritone sax feature for Charlie Fowlkes, "Spring is Here" - very rare, great sound. This is thankfully devoid of the standards "One O'Clock Jump" and "Jumpin' at the Woodside;" they aren't bad songs, but they're on every other live Basie album. Coupled with a six dollar price tag, this CD is a must have for any Basie fan.

Excellent recording quaility of a night club concert. You can hear the glasses clinking in the backround. It's very hi fidelity for a live recording. Great buy.
