Falls Short Of The Glory.......2007-05-18
I must warn you up front: tracks 2,10,11,15,16,17 and 18 are ALTERNATE TAKES, not the masters you are probably use to. And it is NOT advertised on the package! So if you know these songs by heart, you will either be pleased to have them or very annoyed. Just to warn you.
The transfers are fine but the song selection is missing a bunch of songs that I would consider essential to a "Very Best" collection of Benny's RCA period. It is just not one without "Don't Be That Way", "Loch Lomond", "Goodnight My Love", "Goodbye", "Down South Camp Meeting", "Changes" and "Body & Soul". I would say go with "Pure Gold" or "Sing, Sing, Sing" instead.
Very Best of Benny Goodman........2007-05-08
To appreciate this one has to have danced to this orchectra. Been there and done that. Most talent heard in one group---ever. No omne has ever come cliose to Benny Goodman playing the clarinet.
The Very Best of Benny Goodman.......2007-04-11
I was a young teenager during Benny Goodman's era. My father loved the music and we listened to it frequently. What a great instrumentalist Mr. Goodman was! This is a terrific collection of his best songs.
The Very Best is a Great One!.......2007-03-22
The only band leader who can hold a candle to Glenn Miller!
The Best of Benny Goodman.......2007-02-22
I love the Big Band era and especially Benny Goodman. This is a good quality remastering of a variety of Goodman hits. I bought it for certain specific cuts I needed for a seminar I was giving, but it would be a good choice for someone just becoming acquainted with Benny Goodman.

The Master.......2007-04-02
Started playing the sax in 1944. To this day, Boots is my favorite and I've found no one (certainly incluing me) who can come close to matching his work. All of his CDs are incredible.
It doesn't get any better than Boots!!!.......2006-12-15
Kenny G., sit down and take some lessons from a true musician! Boots is the best. Buy this CD and let 'Yakety Sax' take you away. Pick up a Donna Fargo CD while you're at it. The two compliment eachother perfectly and can set the perfect mood for a romantic eavening!

A fun mix.......2007-06-22
Sad to see how the swing craze has died off, it produced some really great stuff.
This album is a nice mix of several more obscure swing bands, and the songs are a good range of styles and material. If you enjoy swing, this CD should be satisfying. I bought it on a whim and have enjoyed it. Some highlights to watch out for: "Ruby Mae" by Indigo Swing, where the talented musicians from that now-defunct band create the musical sound of riding the rails on a cross-country train, and "Tossin' and Turnin'" by the Cigar Store Indians, a rockabilly romp reminiscent of Brian Setzer when he was still with the Stray Cats.
Indigo Swing's stuff is still available too, and is great. Their latter two albums, "All Aboard" and "Red Light!" are well worth a listen--or several. Enjoy :)

Simply the Best............2005-12-03
Unfortunately for Harry James, when great trumpeters are discussed among the less-informed, people always talk about Miles, Dizzy, Satchmo, Maynard, etc. (And well they should!) But unless you are a big-band afficiando or a trumpet player, Harry James doesn't come up on the short list. And it should. Harry is unjustly labeled as "schmaltzy" because he made a few bucks on his many hits for the record-buying public back in the 40's, but the truth is...Harry was a "Mutha"! No one...repeat....NO-ONE was as powerful, technically perfect, hard-swinging, and as versatile as Harry. Clark Terry even remarked that "Harry was a BITCH!" Miles loved Harry as well. Adolph Herseth confessed he was a big Harry James fan as a youth. So this collection should not be missed by anyone who digs big-band, or anyone considering what CD's to start their jazz collection. This CD will satisfy! BUT.....if you liked this, you will LOVE "Trumpet Blues- The Best of Harry James". There is a KILLER version of "James Session" that will nicely illustrate the power and technique of Harry James.
Harry's trumpet.......2005-09-29
Harry was one of the great trumpters. It was a pleasure to listen to his best works again
Big band era music.......2005-08-25
Harry James and his orchestra were among the best of the swing era, and this CD offers a truly wonderful sampling.
Beautiful sound quality!.......2003-12-25
Wow! Have I ever heard Harry's trupet blaring so gorgeously? The sound on this CD will astound you, especially everyone who has spent time listening to the James orchestra on vinyl. There are few pops, hisses or buzzes on this recording, it's clean throughout and a total joy.
So many "greatest hits" compilations miss the mark either in quality or song selection. But this disc lives up to its billing as the "Best" of the James orchestra. It contains one of the stellar and swingiest tunes of the Big Band era, "Ciribiribin," (though this version is inferior to the more famous "single" version). It's hard to listen to this song and not appreciate the brilliant arrangement and musicianship displayed here. Along with Goodman's "Sing, Sing Sing" and Glenn Miller's "In the Mood" this has got to be in the top ten of any Big Band all-time greatest list.
It's a pity that James has been somewhat forgotten today and shoved aside in preference of Benny, Glenn and Artie. Was his band as good as those giants? No, but this disc shows that his band could swing, had a phenomenal musician named Harry whose virtuosity remains amazing. This is a must have album for anyone serious about the Big Band era.
A Dozen Jewels from the Hi-Fi Remakes.......2001-08-18
This increasingly rare issue (pressed to CD in 1990) is comprised of 12 cuts that were enormous instrumental successes for James during the war years, and which Capitol decided to remake in high-fidelity sound. Harry's theme song, Ciribiribin, gets a slightly different treatment, while other tunes are merely augmented by way of the improved sound, including Carnival, the best arrangement Billy May ever wrote (and THAT is saying something). These 1955 sessions have subsequently been released in their entirety by Mosaic Records, in a box set with Gene Krupa's 1950s sessions. The personnel is impeccable as one would expect, including the greatest of all lead trumpeters Conrad Gozzo (who ironically was often compared to James). Love James but wince at those sappy vocals? Nary a songbird appears on this CD, so don't sweat it. (And incidentally, don't feel like too much of a whipper-snapper if you never cared for big band vocals. Many of the folks around during that time had a similar opinion, and the band leaders to a man generally despised singers except as juke-box money-makers .) The Big Band Era was at the end of its heyday by the time these recordings were made, but as you'll hear, Harry James still had something more to give.

Customer Reviews:
The Best of Stan Kenton.......2006-11-15
Excellent! It contains all of his major contributions. It is definetly a keeper. The man was a genius to say the least.
I'm mystified.......2006-01-12
I figured that after almost 40 years listening to Jazz and Jazz-related music I should have at least a Best of Kenton...so I got it. And I don't get it. I mean, the playing is awesome. The brass players are giants. The fact that it doesn't really swing isn't a problem. I love Nelson Riddle, Bernard Herrmann...all kinds of Exotica. But is this Exotica? Jazz? Easy Listening? Labels don't matter, but this music seems like an only OK example of each thing that it hints at. For fans of low trombone writing this disc is way up there - faint praise, perhaps. But that's probably the main reason I'll keep it! Kenton fans, it's good you still have each other. But this has the distinction of being one of the least-played discs in my collection.
These are not the best renditions Kenton is famous for..........2001-09-17
A PRETTY GOOD CD, however, most of the songs are from 1945 to 47, and the renditions are not as good as the Kenton works of
the 1950's, e.g., The Peanut Vendor, etc.
David
Stan is still the man........2001-06-15
Kenton at his finest. Good music to listen to. Not for everybody, but he helped the Four Freshman get started ,and Maynard Furgeson played with him. What a sound. Buy it.
An incredible array of artisty.......2001-02-24
I got into Stan Kenton in the strangest way. There is a radio show devoted to shortwave broadcasting called "DXing with Cumbre" hosted by Marie Lamb. I sent her an email about the opening and closing music for her show and that's when I discovered Stan. She used "Intermission Riff" which I fell in love with. The rest of the CD is a wonderful sonic trip through time and some of the tunes remind you of the stuff that Ricky Ricardo played on "I Love Lucy". My daughter calls it "Lucy Music"! Good stuff even if you are not a jazz fan.

Boop-Boop, Diddem-Daddem.......2007-05-12
I bought this collection for "Three Little Fishies", which song a friend of mine from college had included on a mix tape he made for me back in the mid-70s (which tape has long since disintegrated), and which had been stuck in a corner of my brain like a wad of gum for over 30 years. I didn't really know much about Kyser; but apparently, he was known for wearing a mortarboard onstage (as the professor of his "Kollege of Musical Knowledge"); for the musical trademark of having one line of the song sung at the beginning of the record, before the band took a verse and chorus; for having a veritable army of band singers all at once (including Ginny Simms, "Handsome" Harry Babbitt, and someone or something called Ish Kabibble); and for launching the career of Mike Douglas. Over the course of the 1930s and 40s, the Kyser outfit went from a "sweet" band (sort of Guy Lombardo-ish) to a "hot" swing band, all the while leaning towards novelty (witness "Who's Yahoodi", "Alexander the Swoose (Half-Swan Half-Goose)", and the aforementioned "Three Little Fishies") . Their music is workmanlike, if wholly unremarkable throughout, which is not to say it isn't fun -- it definitely is. Even swing fans will likely only need one Kay Kyser collection in their lives. I recommend this one.
This is how a "Best Of" should be..........2005-09-27
I'm trying to enhance my collection of recorded music from the period, but the 30s and 40s are a little before my time. So, I'm using Joel Whitburn's "Pop Memories" to guide me as I go about collecting this music.31 of the 36 tracks on these two discs are listed in Whitburn's book - a huge track-count and an admirable percentage of ORIGINAL, "Best Of" recordings. (It really bugs me if a recording isn't "the original".)Plus, Kyser and company's popularity at the time makes this one of the best musical investments I ever made.
Kay Kyser's Best Really IS..........2000-10-25
As a Kyser collector for 11 years, this double CD IS the most comprehensive collection I've seen yet from the Ol' Professor of Swing. What most people don't realize is many of the tracks here are alternate takes, which makes this even better! From his early recordings on Brunswick to later Columbia hits, Kay, Ish Kabibble and the other featured vocalists are well represented here. For more info on this once hugely popular, but almost forgotten Big Bandleader, go to kaykyser.net C'mon chillen, Yess Dance!
The Ol' Perfesser ..........2000-08-12
Not just PURE corn, this compilation contains many serious renditions of classics (Ole Buttermilk Sky, On a Slow Boat to China, etc.). The novelty tunes, frankly the reason that I bought the CD, cover the gamut of silliness. We all know "Three Little Fishies" but how many can say that they have a copy of "Horses don't Bet on People"! With 36 songs, on two CD's, you can be assured that you'll know all there is to know about Kay Kyser, avoiding any remedial Klasses at Kollege. (and Mike Douglas! He didn't have a voice when I watched his TV show as a kid. Apparently he DID when he worked with Kay.)

11 hits!! amazing.......2003-12-13
If you're reading this you probably guess I save hits of
popular music from 1940 forward to today. Frankie Carle had
14 hits according to Billboard, and 11 of them are here. What
else has to be said? But it if you want your collection to
reflect what was popular in the era you're reviewing, then this
is a must buy.
Carle does it Again!.......2002-05-02
First of all this CD has fantastic sound! A lot of the older material(s) used for sound recording did'nt hold up very well..but this one does a very good job of making this sound clean. Many, many highlights on this CD,"Beg your Pardon" by Marjorie Hughes and "Peggy O'Neil" by Gregg Lawrence is a real nice novelty number. And of course the gems of any Carle collection- "Carle Boogie" and "Rumors are Flying". 25 tracks in all make this well worth buying and keeping in your collection for a long long time!

Customer Reviews:
Good but not the best!.......2005-06-21
Nice compilation of swing.
First volume is presenting Glann Miller' hits. I didn't know that Pennsylvania 6-5000 and Chattanooga Choo Choo were recorded without vocals.
Second volume is presenting Benny the King Goodman. Mostly fifties material. I miss Sing Sing Sing and few others.
The third volume is a mixture of Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Woody Hermann, Duke Ellington and Count Basie's live material. Sometimes a little too jazzy. Sound on whole compilation is great but this set doesn't include all the Best Of The Big Bands material.
Good, but not great!.......2001-07-17
I am an avid listener of big band music. I know what original recordings sound like, and these are NOT the original recordings. Although the music is still nice, and these were performed by good musicians, I can still hear and notice the obvious difference from the originals. It just doesn't have the smoothness and "swing & sway" associated with the "real thing." It's a decent collection, but I prefer original recordings, with the original sound.
Disappointed!.......2001-02-19
Being a fan of big bands, I looked forward to playing this CD set, especially the Glenn Miller portion. Unfortunately, I am familiar with Glenn Miller and these renditions were poor imitations. The notes on the box gave no hint as to who made the recordings. Other than a brief mention that the CDs were "made in Canada," I have no idea of the recording artists. But I strongly suspect that they are NOT original recordings, and NOT the latter day Glenn Miller band. This CD set is just okay. But, for a few dollars more I would prefer the "real thing." Color me "Disappointed!"
Great CD-set.......2001-02-17
This Box Set is a very valuable one (3 CDs for the price of 1 and what Cds!) and it contains some of the biggest moments in swing jazz, the genre I've just begun to explore. I think it is a very good starting point for all who aren't into the genre yet but want to know more about it. Before listening to this set I only knew "Take the A-Train", "Chu-Chu" and some standard classics but this opens the horizon and makes me want to know more about swing jazz.
A very great deal with a very great sound!.......2001-01-25
This box set seemed too good to be true. However, to my pleasure I found that this collection was in fact as awesome as it seems. With all of the classics from Count Basie (an awesome recording of Ain't Misbehavin') this set needs to be a part of any Jazzer's collection. The only flaw that I saw was that some of the recordings were not very high quality because they are so old; it only occurs with a couple of songs like In the Mood and Little Brown Jug. It makes up with it by having such incredible recordings of Mood Indigo and Bugle Time.

Sentimental Gentleman of Swing.......2007-06-09
This CD will almost complete the areas missing for Tommy Dorsey. It warms the cockles of my heart to be able to once again listen to some of great music that was so prevalent in the 1930s and 1940s.

Tommy Dorsey & His Orchestra.......2007-05-07
Great muscic from a great era. My favorite is "I want to be happy cha cha". They don't make music like they useed to.
Incomplete and misleading.......2000-08-27
It's a misnomer to claim this record represents "The Best" of Tommy Dorsey. How can any collection that makes this claim omit "Opus number 1," arguably Dorsey's greatest hit? All of the songs here are ballads, there are no up-tempo or swing inclusions which is baffling. In addition, these are *not* the original recordings! Instead of playing the standard (and superior) 1930's version of I'm Getting Sentimental Over You, this album throws on a sub-standard 1951 version of the song. What a disappointment.
If you are sampling Dorsey records and you started off with this disc, you would get a completely erroneous impression of his body of work. Dorsey produced some fine ballads, but he was much more multi-faceted that than and could really swing. This record does not show that side of him, which is frustrating.
Tommy Dorsey made some brilliant music in the 30's and 40's but you won't find it here. This is an inferior compilation of schmaltzy ballads and later recordings which just don't capture Dorsey's magic.
Enjoyed it very much; just music, no vocal is what I like........1998-12-03
