Like other discs in the Legends of Acid Jazz series, this one combines two classic LPs from the Prestige vaults. Organist Shirley Scott's two quartet sessions here are luminous, low-key affairs. First up is a 1964 session originally released under the coleadership of guitarist Kenny Burrell. A tasteful complement to Jimmy Smith on numerous outings, Burrell sounds more prominent with Scott's mellow sound. Together they build some beautifully bluesy moods, whatever the material. An 11-minute version of "They Call It Stormy Monday" is the centerpiece, served up with depth and elegance. The second session is the earlier of the two, from 1960, and it has the unusual combination of organ and vibes--a surprisingly effective blend of percussive and soft attacks that has seldom been used. The vibraphonist is Lem Winchester, a talented player who made few recordings. The ballads resonate warmly, and the group brings a lightly swinging touch to several bop classics as well as Andre Previn's definitively hip "Like Young." --Stuart Broomer

Whoopi Goldberg has a lot of talents, but singing is not one of them. Hearing her massacre Motown classics like "Dancing in the Street," "Ball of Confusion" and "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" in her flat, dull voice on this soundtrack album would be harmless if a whole generation weren't being introduced to these songs through her clumsy performances. Several choirs turn in lackluster performances of gospel numbers. The disc's one redeeming moment is Aretha Franklin's overpowering delivery of "A Deeper Love," written and produced by C+C Music Factory. --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars Great Soundtrack.......2007-06-16

I remember when this movie first came out. My brother rented it and let me watch with him. I watched it like 2 more times before he had to take it back. I then bought the movie and it is still one of my favorite movies today. I like the movie soo much because of the music. I had the soundtrack on a cassette tape and I use to listen to it all the time in my portable tape player (that seems like ages ago) and I'm only 21! Lol! Anyways this is a great album to listen to...especially when you love to sing like I do!!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT MOVIE AND CD........2007-01-04

I saw this movie a long time ago and loved it. The CD Soundtrack has great inspirational songs from the film and when I got it, I was so happy to sing along with it.

5 out of 5 stars Love the music.......2006-08-21

Loved the movie, loved the music. I purchased this CD for my 4 year old granddaughter who watched the movie and loved it. She likes to listen to it in the car.

5 out of 5 stars Let the whole earth sing!.......2006-05-03

Amazon.com, Geoffrey Himes must have a tin ear!

Forget the "official" review. The "joyful, joyful" finale alone is worth the price of this soundtrack all by itself! It truly captures the joy that should ALWAYS be the centerpiece of the Christian life.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST SOUNDTRACKS EVER.......2006-01-29

Please everybody ignores Amazon's review of this album. I am 16 years old, and I was three years old when this movie and soundtrack came out. And at an early age this entire project(movie and soundtrack) gave me a love of music, which is why I like to sing now and introduced me to quality music and great classics, and not like the mess that we hear today. So for anybody who has contemplated bying this project, listen if everytime you watch the movie, you cant help to sing along with them, them you need to purchase this album. Because it will certainly bless you.

4 out of 5 stars You just wish there was more of these singing nuns singing.......2005-06-26

I have to believe the chief reason for picking up this album is to get the songs that the nuns sing in "Sister Act." The appeal here is what I think of as the Joe Piscopo approach to singing songs when he played Frank Sinatra on "Saturday Night Love." Piscopo would either take a regular Frank Sinatra hit (e.g., "Witchcraft") and turn it into a heavy metal/rock song, or he would take a popular rock song (e.g., Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run") and do it in Sinatra's classic saloon style. That is essentially what we have here when the nuns led by Sister Delores take a "traditional" church song such as "Hail Holy Queen" and do it R&B style or when they take a song like "I Will Follow Him" and turn the opening into a hymn of devotion. In case you do not read the notes, Andrea Robinson is the soloist who does the power solos in grand Marni Nixon style for Sister Mary Robert (Wendy Makkena).

The bad news is that they cannot fill up a complete album of such songs, even if you throw the songs from "Sister Act 2" into the mix as well, so there are two additional components to this soundtrack. First there are original classic R&B songs from the likes of Etta James ("Roll With Me Henry"), Fontella Bass ("Rescue Me"), and Dee Dee Sharp ("Gravy"). Then there are a couple of instrumental tracks written by Marc Shaiman which are really around just to fill up the album. The best of that bunch is "Getting into the Habit," but even that one is not going to stand up against even the weakest of the singing tracks (which would be "My God," which is cute lyrically but not as much fun as the other "covers" in terms of the harmonious singing raising the rafters).

The goal here is to be able to listen to the songs without having to watch the movie, so that you can sing along with the ladies in the car or while doing work around the house. These are infectious versions of these songs and the idea of investing secular pop songs with religious fervor is rather appealing. Besides, not only do you have Whoopi Goldberg and Kathy Najimy singing, but also the late great Mary Wickes. For the record, the other ladies of the choir are Ellen Albertini Dow, Carmen Zapata, Pat Crawford Brown, Prudence Wright Holmes, Georgia Creighton, Susan Johnson, Ruth Kobart, Susan Browning, Darlene Koldenhoven, Sheri Izzard, Edith Diaz and Beth Fowler (yes, the one you see signing in the movie are the ones actually doing the singing on the soundtrack, which I also think is pretty neat).

3 out of 5 stars Nice singers, good for nostalgic Soul fans!.......2007-03-06

This CD is a good addition to your 70s Soul collection if you also like The O'Jays, Spinners, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Isley Brothers and/or The Main Ingredient, Four Tops, The Dramatics and any other of those wonderful Soul bands that ruled the "classic" Philly and Motown sound.

4 out of 5 stars A must for any CD collection.......2007-03-04

I was only 7 years old in 1972 when CB&SR were in their short lived hey-day. But even at 7 years old the sounds of R&B and Edward's voice was the icing on the cake for my love for great soul music along with Stevie Wonder, The O-jays and many more. Having this CD in my collection now not only brings back great memories but makes me appreciate the soulful sound and great lyrics written by the Cornelious Brothers. I only wish they were still going. I recamend getting this collection it is truly a great album and edwards voice is one of a kind even for a 7 year old kid in 1972.

I bought the Cornelius Bros.& Sister Rose first album on vinyl back in 1972. It was one of the few albums produced that didn't have a bad cut on it. The majority of the songs on this CD were on that album, but it just makes me miss the first album all the more. Why hasn't Rhino or someone else picked up on this group and re-released the first album on CD?

Here's another to join the parade of page-to-stage musicals inspired by 19th-century fiction. This ambitious adaptation of Charlotte Brontë's haunting classic Jane Eyre for the musical theater seems to be part of a trend represented most famously by Les Misérables. It also reflects the increasing pressure to schedule an original cast recording release as close as possible to a new show's Broadway opening: in this case, in fact, the CD was both recorded and released prior to the show's opening in December 2000 at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. But what's most significant for the artistic character of Jane Eyre: The Musical is found in yet another pattern: like a number of his colleagues, composer-lyricist Paul Gordon comes to the project from a pop music industry background (best known for his hit "Friends and Lovers"). And quite a few of the show's numbers benefit from Gordon's catchy craftwork, weaving melodies that are clearly destined to be whistled long past curtain. Yet the effect is sometimes too facile, not diving as deep as we would like into the emotional predicaments of Brontë's characters. You begin to crave a more deftly defined and imagined variety of sound worlds (especially for the darker aspects of Thornfield Hall) than what is hinted at. Gordon doesn't forge any new paths, but his melodic fluency does have its moments of payoff--especially in the moving final duet "Brave Enough for Love," which is also strong enough to stand on its own.

Gordon's predilections as a would-be son of Sondheim are nevertheless clear, and he's telescoped the story into mostly effective lyrics, with some thoughtful juxtapositions of material. Most importantly, he understands that this is more than a Gothic romance, foregrounding the central message of forgiveness that Jane learns as a girl. He attempts to explore the injured sense of self shared by both Jane and Rochester and sets them on a painful, mutual voyage of discovery.

The creative team also includes the veteran duo John Caird (book and direction) and John Napier (scenic design), who have collaborated on such epics as Les Mis and Nicholas Nickleby (not to mention the Las Vegas Siegfried and Roy extravaganza). And the show's creators seem to share a vision geared toward the more operatic end of the spectrum (it was opera composers, after all, who early on claimed 19th-century Gothic fiction for the stage, as in Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor), with an actual parody of coloratura in one showstopper ("The Finer Things") given to Blanche Ingram. Fortunately, the two principals have large, richly expressive voices to encompass the large, complicated emotions of these characters. Marla Schaffel singswith unusual beauty and brings dimension to her Jane, while James Barbour (whose resumé includes Beauty and the Beast) is never really threatening as Rochester, but rather a tortured soul who is sweet-voiced even at his most cynical. Mary Stout is a stitch as the blustery Mrs. Fairfax. While the show has already undergone a lengthy evolution from its very first workshops, the viability of its final, fully staged realization has yet to be determined. But this cast recording conveys an authentic sense of the musical's atmosphere and emotional scope. --Thomas May

Not only was this CD super cheap, it also arrived at my house 3 days later!

4 out of 5 stars Perfect Match.......2007-03-16

The music in this album really gave me the feeling of reading the book. I think the songs were well chosen and well written, except of course for the songs sung by Mrs. Fairfax... I could have done without those. Jane and Mr. Rochester's songs carry the story well and they sound lovely. For any musical lover, or romance fan I definitely recommend this album.

5 out of 5 stars Probably the most beautiful musical of all time.......2007-02-16

This is a hidden gem and if you buy it and listen to it, I don't see how you can not love it. I have bought many, many Broadway cast albums but I still am a popster at heart. With all that said, this is a cast album that soars above the crowd.

I bought this several years ago and have listened to it repeatedly since I got it. Why do I love it so much? First of all, the lyrics are full of heart and emotion and tell the story ably. But it is the music and the performances that are truly remarkable here. The melodies are memorable and absolutely exquisite. The orchestration is lush but not sappy. The performances by the two leads are nothing less than stunning.

I never get bored with this wonderful cast album and it is very, very highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2007-01-28

I listen to this soundtrack all the time and I never get tired of the songs. If Charlotte Bronte story was written as a musical, then this would definitely be it.

4 out of 5 stars A good musical.......2006-07-20

if you like old-fashioned romantic stuff, this one's for you. Some songs are very inspired, the music is,for the most part, quite beautiful, and the story line keeps the essence of the Bronte novel. I heard this right after "Wuthering Heights: the musical", which is quite good, yet this is superior. Give it a try and you might be nicely surprised. I would highly recommend it to the ones who know the novel and to English Literature students: it offers a different and interesting approach to the novel.

5 out of 5 stars But why mess with perfection?.......2007-03-22

Everything came together for Sister Sledge and Chic in 1979 and the result was this monster hit of an album that is still selling very well, according to my research, almost 30 years after its release. The four sisters had been around for some time prior to "We Are Family" but had only moderate r&b success. Meanwhile, Chic were on the up and up following the disco/pop hit success of their first three albums, Chic, C'est Chic and Risqué. The songs and production by Bernard Edwards & Nile Rodgers matched with the voices of Kathy, Debbie, Kim and Joni Sledge was pure heaven. I've never met anyone who doesn't know at least one of the songs on this album (and doesn't know the words to said song) and I've played tunes like "He's The Greatest Dancer", "Thinking Of You" and "We Are Family" at parties and people who weren't even born in 1979 have jumped up to dance. Every song is a winner and this is another album where it's next to impossible to choose favourite songs. If I had to though, my choice would be considered very odd by many: it would be "One More Time". Something about that song makes my heart smile every time I play or hear it. Also worth a mention is the brilliant piano work by Andy Schwartz & Robert Sabino.

And that on the title track - all 8mins and 20secs of it - Kathy Sledge delivers a lead vocal and ad lib performance, the likes of which I had never heard before and have never heard since.

This is a classic disco CD I think everyone should have and my only gripe is with the four remixes at the end of the CD. Personally I find them annoying and superfluous. Why mess with perfection?

It still gets five stars though. It's good to have it on CD after years of having it on vinyl. The remastering has given the CD a fuller sound than I was expecting and this might be the first CD I've ever bought that has managed to sound better than its vinyl original, even on a Technics 1200. Great stuff.

5 out of 5 stars TY BESS(THE MUSIC MAN).......2007-01-27

Just like their song says,It easy to love, and it is.Every song on this cd was well done. The minds behind this classic nile rogers and benard edwards once again proved that they were not just disco producers althought this is a disco cd there are threads of real classic r&b music in it enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Dance music (Disco) at its "70s" best.......2003-07-07

I had the album version--without the remixes at the time--when Sister Sledge first came on the scene. I remember putting either "He's The Greatest Dancer" or "We Are Family" on at a party, and the dance party came alive. They loved it! Something I didn't realize at the time, but Luther Vandross helped out on backing vocals, who was a regular Chic support singer. My favorites are the 6:15 sec version of "He's The Greatest Dancer," the 4:53 sec "Lost In Music" (my favorite), the 8:24 sec version "We Are Family," and the 3:17 sec hidden gem "One More Time." "Thinking Of You" is a great song that should have been a single but never happened. The ballads are worth listening to and make the overall album a complete classic. The later added remixes, which are mostly over 8 minutes long, are a European techno touch to 90s dance music (House music if you will). I like 'em. This album (CD) is a definite buy and timeless classic.

5 out of 5 stars The best fusion possible of disco's production and vocality.......2001-12-05

Done completely in the Chic style. The hit title song is of course smashing.

It's marvelous to hear on this disc two remixes of "lost In Music" - a must in my opinion, since this hit's album version doesn't have an adequate tempo for dancing to it, so increasing the tempo is imperative for deriving more excitement from this song, albeit the two remixes have removed it from the pure vicinity of disco. The two remixes are very similar with the glaring exception of the "Sure Is Pure" remix artificially entering the "Aaaaaa" syllable followed by the theme "...Lost In Music".

It's also good to hear two remixes of "We Are Family".
"Thinking Of You" is very good, of course along with "We Are Family" and "He's The Greatest Dancer".

5 out of 5 stars A Pinnacle of the 70's.......2001-07-28

This album was produced at the same time as Chic's seminal second album (in fact, songs were traded between the two lp's). It shows the same remarkable song writing, arrangements, and production, albeit in a slightly different direction to suit the temperament of the Sledge women. It had a similar airy feel and sheen, but may have been less detached and mysterious (which were the aims of the C'est Chic project). The title track was probably most divergent from the set, and it represented the brassier, more syncopated production and harmonized vocals that would characterize Sister Sledge's next album, Love Somebody Today (also unfortunately no longer available in CD format). Much has been rhapsodized by critics over "Lost In Music" and the oft-appropriated title track; I find "Thinking Of You" among the upper echelons of Chic Org material. The timelessness of "He's The Greatest Dancer" is evident when it is so often sampled even 20 years later. Although it may not have quite the precision of the C'est Chic album, We Are Family nevertheless stood far above virtually all other pop albums in its decade. Its quality is so high that when listening to this CD version, when the modern remixes come up, I am jarred from the spell that Edwards and Rodgers created and must run to press "Stop."

4 out of 5 stars British urbana of the highest order.......2006-10-23

BNH really broke loose with this one, an intoxicating mix of jazz ("Snake Hips"), funk ("Fake"), and soul ("Spend Some Time").

5 out of 5 stars A Flawless CD, Couldn't Make it Better if they Tried........2006-06-10

If I were trapped on a desert island with a cd player and I could choose one CD, this would be it. Brother Sister is flawless, plain and simple.

4 out of 5 stars Brother Sister - actually 4.5 stars.......2006-05-23

Wow, only 11 reviews for one of the better releases of the early 90's? Well, I just had to add my 2 cents worth of love for this disc. I fell in love with the single, DREAM ON DREAMER, which got heavy play on both the radio & video channels I watched back in the day.

The funny thing about a group like BNH which produces high quality music and is a somewhat self-contained band is that their music definitely stands the test of time. For those who get it in 2006 or after, they'll probably be very surprised to note that this disc was released in 1994! The group specializes in r&b funk and features one of the unique voices in r&b, N'Dea Davenport - while also producing terrific instrumental songs.

To this day, my favorite tracks are: DREAM ON DREAMER, DAYBREAK, SPEND SOME TIME, BROTHER SISTER, TEN TON TAKE, FOREVER & SNAKE HIPS.

If you don't have this disc in your collection and you like funkdified neo-soul, then you will love this disc!

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite BNH Album!!--Template For Mid 90's Neo Soul!!.......2006-02-12

I still love this album 12 yrs after the fact!
This album is like watching one of those great
Scorsese pictures that have been out for yrs
but every time you see it, you see something that
you never saw before!(In this case, hear!)
N'Dea and the boyz were kickin' azz
and takin' names on this one from the begining to end!
This is just a masterpiece and dare I say,
a template to which the whole neo-soul movement
was built from! (*This one and Me'shell N'Degeocello's
1993 debut "Plantation Lullabies"!!)

The highlights**
"Have A Good Time" (Retro Trunk-Funk!)
"Brother Sister" (Slick Jazzy Funk w/ a message!)
"Dream On Dreamer" (Groovy , Airy & Uplifting!)
"Mind Trips" (Syncopated Funk Perfection!)
"Keep Together" (Just A Nice Feel & I like the message!)
"Forever" (Lush & Funky!)
"Daybreak" ( Universal Message and Upbeat Groove!)

I could just see D'Angelo, Maxwell, Erykah Badu, Zhane,
The Roots, Floetry and Musiq all sitting around and
listening to this in the early 90's and
saying "This is the way to go!"
Buy It!--You can't lose!

What can I say about one of the greatest funk bands known to man? BNH is pure FUNK to the core and inner most soul. Gravy-ness, nothing but pure gravy. Just put the music on and let it go. I love the songs and N'Dea Davenport is just perfect with them. The songs are way bomb, the bass lines are hotness and that makes for a great sound and an awesome band. I have never had the pleasure of hearing them live and if I had one regret in life that would be the one. Awesome band. Pure gravy-ness.

4 out of 5 stars Soul Sista Supreme!.......2007-04-05

Great CD comp for the price. Rossetta was doin' it at the Cotton Club long before the white boys she later inspired...Elvis, Jerry Lee, etc. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest jazz guitarists ever & a great singer.......2005-02-19

Why fool around with a single disc sampler for $18.99 when for $24.99 you get everything from her early period on this box set. Sister Rosetta Tharpe was a Gospel singer who sounded more like a niteclub jazz singer, she sings more like Helen Humes then Mahalia Jackson. She plays guitar in a jazz style similar to Charie Christianson. This set will prove that Rosetta is the greatest Gospel singer of all time abd a underrated and forgotten jazz guitar legend, some of the best cuts feature her singin with just her guitar, man she swings!!! She is also featured with big bands, and she jums the blues!!!

5 out of 5 stars My nominee for the first rock and roll guitarist.......2005-01-20

Sister Rosetta Tharpe plays with a lively, swinging, push-the-envelope ferocity that foreshadows Chuck Berry's playing. For that reason alone, this collection would be worth the nominal amount it costs. But there's plenty more to recommend this set of material from one of gospel's unjustly neglected giants. Sister Rosetta Tharpe was a passionate and gifted singer, with a grittiness that again presages the best of the rock-and-roll era. The material is first-rate throughout--these are songs you cannot get out of your head. Most of all, it's the way the music celebrates the gift of life and the joy of living, thereby offering the most compelling argument for the faith and doctrine it champions. This is music that invariably puts a smile on my face and a spring in my step.

Proper UK is a label worth exploring in depth, by the way. Its budget sets provide wonderful overviews of genres (everything from ska to Western swing to guitar blues) and great artists (from crooners to shouters and everything in between). Purists looking for pristine packaging and exquisite remastering will prefer Bear Family, but for us plebes on a budget, Proper is a godsend.

5 out of 5 stars NOW this is my TYPE of Christian music!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-12-03

Wow, I can't wait to get to heaven(not only to see my King), but to also hear Sister Rosetta Tharpe(& Ethel Waters). Tharpe is my type of Christian music(I just can't relate to todays alternative style). Tharpe just sings teh Gospel to truthfully, not to mention she plays jazz guitar on the same level(if not better) as Charlie Christianson. Tharpe fused Gospel and Christian messages with swing and urban blues, for a ntural blend of swignin' jazz Gospel! This cd set will make you wonder why there is nobody today who sings or plays Gospel music in theis appealing style!!! Exellent cd box set under 25 bucks, ESSENTIAL!!!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2004-08-14

I completely agree with Ms. Brooks above.

Not only is this some fine music by one of the best performers in Gospel and R&B, but it's excellently inexpensive. Four song-stuffed disks for a mere $24.00.

You can't go wrong with this one.

4 out of 5 stars Decent Collection.......2007-07-10

This is a decent collection of Sister Sledge's work but Rhino/Atlantic why not put together a "real" definitive collection or an anthology on these ladies and include the hard to find singles? They are more than deserving of it.

Most people think Sister Sledge fell to earth with 1979's We are Family, but this is not the case. They'd been around since 1971 and made a handful of great records that were never promoted before and after "Family"...anyway I digress. Again... Rhino give us an Anthology worthy of these ladies... Below is Sister Sledges(mostly) Atlantic discography:

1971 - Time Will Tell (single) - Money Back Records
1972 - Weatherman (single) - ATCO Records
1973 - Mama Never Told Me (single) - ATCO Records
1975 - Circle of Love - ATCO Records
1976 - Thank You For Today/Have Love, Will Travel (single) - Cotillion Records
1977 - Together - Cotillion Records
1978 - I've Seen Better Days (single) - Cotillion Records
1979 - We Are Family - Cotillion Records
1980 - Love Somebody Today - Cotillion Records
1981 - All American Girls - Cotillion Records
1982 - The Sisters - Cotillion Records
1983 - Betcha Say That To All The Girls - Cotillion Records
1985 - When The Boys Meet The Girls - Atlantic Records

5 out of 5 stars Definitive collection.......2007-02-05

Perhaps this is a bit too much for the casual Sister Sledge fan, but if you want a collection that covers all eras of their career, this is the one to buy. This compilation features all the well-known hits such as "We Are Family", "He's The Greatest Dancer" and "Lost in Music", in addition to favorites such as "All American Girls" and what is perhaps their best song in my opinion, "Thinking of You".

Sister Sledge sang the original version of "All the Man That I Need" that went on to be a big hit for Whitney Houston, and they had a minor hit with their version of "My Guy". They also had a big UK hit in 1985 with "Frankie", which is admittedly awful. All these tracks and more are included here.

5 out of 5 stars Lives Up To Its Title.......2006-09-12

THE DEFINITIVE GROOVE COLLECTION may be a little too much Sister Sledge for casual fans, but for deep soul/disco lovers, this collection is a must. Besides the expected hits, this anthology includes such popular album cuts as "Betcha Say That To All The Girls" (featuring a humorous rap by jazz singer Al Jarreau), "Super Bad Sisters" (one of the earliest rap/sung collaborations), and the creamy Phiily disco/soul of "Pain Reliever". It also includes three non-album singles (The Top 20 UK hit "Mama Never Told Me", the ballad "Thank You For Today" and the peppy "Cream Of The Crop", which crawled to #100 on the Billboard r&b charts in 1976). The usual quality Rhino liner notes are here as well as clean remastered sound. According to the liner notes, Sister Sledge gets a mechanical royalty whenever "We Are Family" is played although they didn't write the song.

5 out of 5 stars OH WOW.......2006-08-29

This is not really a review, but a loyal Sister Sledge fan jumping for joy right now. All of my favorite SS tracks are on here. I think anybody who is a SS fan will truly enjoy this double disc. It's well worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Sister Sledge Can Sing..........2007-01-12

Other reviewers of this disc have said what I'd say, so I'll I want to add is that Sister Sledge was very underrated based on their level of talent, and that is evidenced by the work on this Best of Sister Sledge disc (particularly songs like, "Lost in Music" and "Got to get back to love"). These ladies can harmonize, sing pop, and soul, and whatever else they wanted to sing. I've owned this disc for almost 15 years, and I still listen to it regularly because the songs are great. Brenda Russell, Patrice Rushen, CHIC, and Sister Sledge (in their day) were truly talented artists, who weren't fully appreciated, and their music is timeless and in good taste.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic disco soul sound.......2005-06-15

This disc shows how much more disco had to offer than conventional wisdom (= stupidity) would have you believe. The sisters are powerhouse vocalists, the hooks irresistible, the production (by the great Chic dude Nile Rodgers) brilliant. There's an edge and a depth here in the anthemic tunes (We Are Family, All American Girls) that make them a pleasure to hear and dance to long after disco's demise. Underrated masterpiece: Lost in Music, with its commanding vocals, hypnotic guitarwork, and blistering groove. Go Sisters!

4 out of 5 stars A collection of classics.......2001-11-10

A collection featuring 7" versions and two gems in their full-length versions : « We are family » (8 minutes) and « He's the greatest dancer » (6 minutes). Besides, the booklet is excellent. For the real fans there is a reissue of the album « We are family » with « Lost in music » unedited and four remixes.

5 out of 5 stars great voices and great songs.......2000-01-13

forget those wack remixes the originals are far better and more soulful.these sisters were really solid vocalists.nile rodgers&bernard edwards gave the sisters there anthem we are family.thank you for the full length version.hes the greatest dancer is another jam produced by the genius team of rodgers&edwards.a true soulful cd.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for any music lover............1999-03-03

Sisters Debbie, Joni, Kim and Kathy Sledge prove that they are more than just disco divas with this 18 song release that hi-lights the best days of their career. Though the first few tracks are from their teeny bopper days, by the end of this musical journey you will see that these ladies have evolved both musically and personally into full fledged women. Beginning with their biggest hits, the hypnotizing "He's The Greatest Dancer" that many are getting 'jiggy' with today and an eight minute version of "We Are Family" that sounds more like a gospel revival than a disco hit, with youngest sister Kathy's rousing vocals upfront will keep you dancing. Sister Joni's pleas of being "Lost In Music" could have been a very fitting title for this collection. A familiar sounding "Got To Love Somebody" gives Kathy another chance to cut loose, vocally that is. A very jazzy, yet funky "Reach Your Peak" features an irresistable string and sax solo with the sisters reaching their vocal peaks in perfect harmony. The sisters even try their hands, successfully I might add, with reggae on the track "He's Just A Runaway". Taking a moment to hang up their dancing shoes, the sisters slow things down with a delicious remake of the Motown classic, "My Guy" and the original version of the beautiful "All The Man I Need" which became a hit several years too late for Whitney Houston. The pleading "Got To Get Back To Love" shows a side of the sisters that many don't get a chance to see often. With strong productions, tight vocals and diverse musical styles, this collection is a must have on a group that has never really reached the peak that they really deserved.
