On this, her 22nd release as a leader, Joanne Brackeen once again demonstrates her ability to stretch far afield stylistically while maintaining a staunch individuality. Her piano playing is an idiosyncratic mixture of muscularity and grace, while her compositions make use of multiple themes and tempos. This combination keeps the music pleasingly unpredictable and gives her guest soloists plenty of latitude. On "Ghost Butter" she takes center stage with lengthy piano excursions, while on "Cram 'n Exam" and "Filene's," she lets sax men Chris Potter and David Liebman spin their stories at length. In either case, Brackeen's bristling piano gives the music energy and direction. Joanne Brackeen was the first woman to fill the piano chair in Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and, years hence, she still plays jazz with the verve, integrity, and strength we associate with that exemplary group. --Wally Shoup

Digitally Remastered Double Anthology of the Pop and Soundtrack Composer from the 50's and 60's. Perhaps his Best Counterpart of Today Would Be John Williams. A Film Maker Could Always Rely on Mancini to Deliver a Composition that Hit the Mark for a Film and Conveyed Exactly What was Required and More. He also Filled the Role of an American Mantovani, Recording 'muzak' Versions of Popular Hits. He was Handsome, Personable, but Most of All, Well Respected for his Craft.

There are only four songs with James Galway. The way this recording is presented is misleading and buyers should be aware that this is NOT a joint effort between these two great artists.. I was totally disappointed. I think Henry Mancini is wonderful but was expecting to hear a collaboration. So if you're looking for flute music this isn't it. However it's a great collecton of Henry Mancini's work.

I heard this on PBS. Galway and Mancini may be two of the most talented musicians of our century. Galway for his complete mastery of the flute and Mancini for his ability to arrange , produce and in this instance direct the orchestra while Galway performs. They do several duets of a comical nature as well. This is important because it is one of Mancini's last efforts prior to his unfortunate passing.

Normally, I don't rate albums, however the ratings for this album are totally misleading. If you comment on an album (and relevant comments!), then please give it a rating! This is a solid 4.5-star album. The musicianship is tight, the playing is stellar - sounds like they had fun playing together. How can you miss with Patitucci, Liebman, Payton, Potter and then, of course, Joanne Brackeen! This is the first album of hers that I've heard, but I'd love to hear more. If you like McCoy Tyner or Fred Hersch, or great jazz piano in general, then GET THIS!

Remember when jazz was upbeat party music? No, you probably don't, because after almost 50 years of spreading the fun, jazz started to change in the late 1940s, changed by overseriousness and a separation from its dance roots. No wonder it was so easy for rock 'n' roll to slip in and take over. What's all this got to do with this CD? JoAnne's playing a lot of upbeat, rollicking tunes that make you want to party, make you want to have fun. My apologies to the Jazz Gods for my use of such tasteless terms as "party" and "fun."
