At Times Fun, Other Times Beautiful.......2006-09-21
I got to know the band Carbon Leaf through an online community whom shared the song Life Less Ordinary, a catchy and light- hearted song that is radio- friendly indeed. With the love of that song, I checked out the entire album Indian Summer and no later bought it.
What I really enjoy about this album is how well- written it is. Some of the songs are just beautifully sung as well. The strong lyrics and the mixture of different sounds on this album keep the listener eager and satisfied throughout the album. There is not one song on here that is poor. Although, like most albums, there are a few songs that need to grow on you, ad even when do might pale in comparison to others. For me there are a few songs I favor above the others- a few just really stand out for me.

What About Everything- A+
Changeless- B

Overall this album has plenty of gems on this album to keep you playing their album constantly. Indian Summer has a pleasant, touching and lovely feel to it that is hard to resist.

Excellent.......2006-02-03
I adore this album. There's nothing about it that I don't like. I keep listening to Indian Summer over and over, and I never get tired of it. In particular, the best tracks are "Life Less Ordinary," "What About Everything?", "This is my song!", "Raise the Roof," "Let your troubles roll by," and "When I'm alone." You won't be disappointed by Indian Summer.
This CD will get you hooked!.......2006-01-05
Carbon Leaf has been around for over ten years, but this, their debut major-label album, has brought them national notoriety, well after their 2002 Coca-Cola New Music Award performance on the AMA's with "The Boxer." Anyway, these guys are great.
Barry Privett, the lead singer and songwriter, rocks the mic and the tinwhistle, with catchy and unforgettable lyrics.
Terry Clark, rhythm guitarist, backs up the band with sizzling chords. You really want to hear this man play on "One Prairie Outpost."
Carter Gravatt, "The String Guy," as I like to call him, not only burns up the acoustic and electric guitars, but breathes life into his mandolin. Hear his fingers fly on tracks like "This is My Song!" and "Life Less Ordinary," just for starters.
Jordan Medas, bassist, is the soul of the music on his electric and uprights. "Paloma" really shows his licks well.
Scott Milstead is the man behind the drums...literally. A wonderful percussionist, Scott stays hidden during the live shows, but rocks the audience and adds the backbone of all of Carbon Leaf's music.
This CD introduced me to Carbon Leaf, but since I have listened to it, I've seen these guys in concert six times, met them repeatedly (they are amazing in person and love their fans!), and bought all of their other CDs.
The music can be summarized as moving, emotional, folk rock with the slightest hint of the Celtic and bluegrass flavor that could be found in their earlier music.
Rock on, CL! :)
Carbon Leaf all polished up and ready for the world.......2005-12-22
This gem of an album is the Richmond based band's strongest so far. It brings together their diverse and prolific work background and channels it all into a professional wrapper but still retains the band's creativity and pathos and produces what might happen if Coldplay met Cat Stevens and they played at a Celtic festival.
Carbon Leaf has always been an energetic and enthusiastic live band, rocking intimate live performances a lot like private jam sessions, the band members are all excellent musicians and uninhibited in their creativity, and their previous albums reflected this raw and untapped ethic. Their style has always been a refreshing mix of folksy, moody, and hyper with themes that tend to be introspective and interpersonal without being depressing, with a fixed eye on the horizon (with a sort of a pioneer spirit; decidedly Virginian). Their sound is ecletic and unabashed in experimenting and trying out different styles from folk and celtic, to pure rock, and indie ballads. So their independent albums are flush with gems of all sorts, one giant brainstorming session.
"Indian Summer" takes all this, cleans it up, and picks out what really works.
The songs on this album are diverse and take a bit of everything the band has developed up to this point, the general mood and theme of the album is just what the title suggests: zest for life with a heavy understanding of the world, hope and joy that has seen melancholy. It comes together in Barry Privett's mellow voice, and the band's tight musicality.
The album is wonderful played straight through, but the highlights are "Life Less Ordinary", uptempo and rhythmic, "This Is My Song" the same but even more rollicking, "The Sea" a long and hypnotizing ballad, "One Prarie Outpost" sweet and reminiscent of James Taylor.
But my favorites without a doubt are "Grey Sky Eyes" a beautiful little ballad that starts off with a dancing guitar, light and cloudlike and romantic but a little bittersweet. "What About Everything?" an insanely catchy, hook-infested quirky monologue on life with fantastic lyrics ("what about being done with no resume/what about aliens? what about you and me? what about gold beneath the sea? what about when buildings fall, what about that midnight phone call, the one that wakes you from your peace?"). It also has my all time favorite Carbon Leaf song "When I'm Alone", it's gorgeous. A loud rhythmically throbbing lament to a lost love and friendship, an almost Irish ode with a rock soul, alternately swelling and retreating to quiet, but always devoutly in line to the beat.
Check these guys out, there's a lot to love about them.
The Best Group I had never heard of.......2005-12-19
Seeing this band at a Celtic fest in Bethlehem PA was a real treat. Since then I have almost glued this CD to my deck. The fact that they are not mainstream is testimony to everything that is wrong in corporate music biz. This is the best indie band in years, and just one of a handful of great CDs buy this band.

Wynton Marsalis may not have an easily recognizable or even particularly handsome tone, but this erstwhile jazz trumpeter is an amazing virtuoso with a fine sense of classical style. If you've never owned/heard any of his classical CDs, and you love (mostly baroque) trumpet music, this compilation--a sort of "greatest hits"--is for you. From such cruddy, sensationalistic works as Carnival of Venice to the glories of Haydn's E-Flat Concerto, this is grand entertainment. Marsalis is joined by Kathleen Battle in an exciting version of Handel's "Let the bright seraphim," and the treat there is doubled. A fine piece by Hovhaness for trumpet and organ, never before released, is another surprise. Come listen to the endless, seemingly casual roulades that come out of this guy's trumpet--they'll wake you right up. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
amazing.......2006-10-31
Classic Wynton is the most glorious display of musicianship I have ever heard. No other trumpet player even comes close to Wynton. Don't listen to anything the editorial review says though, it must have been written by a complete ignoramus. Wynton Marsalis not having a clear or recognizable tone? Please...That's like saying Kobe Bryant isn't a good shooter. I can't believe that garbage is on a credible site such as Amazon.
Heard this with NEW appreication................2006-09-07
This is such a wonderful mix. I especially love the Haydn concerto finale in E flat. I was listening to this cd when my grandson (almost 3) heard the glorious music of the trumpet for the first time. He loved seeing the photos of Mr. Marsalis (which I embellished, albeit true, saying how difficult it is to play the trumpet - hence the need for a handerchief to wipe his brow in one of the photos). This awakened his awareness of trumpet music where he now loves to listen to one of his Baby Einstein cd's in the car. Specifically, he told his mother "louder" when the trumpet piece was played - repetetively.
Wynton's the best.......2006-03-17
I'm not a professional musician and don't have a trained ear but Wynton Marsalis has provided me with a very delightful hour of extremely good music.
Classic Wynton--brilliant, clear trumpet renditions.......2006-02-25
For anyone who loves trumpet music as I do, this album is a must. Wynton Marsalis has mastered twenty all-time favorite pieces with such brilliance, that no other trumpeteer comes near by comparison. Opening with J. Clarke's, The King's March, Wynton proceeds to favor listeners with such baroque favorites as Purcell's Entrada from "The Indian Queen," J. Clark's The Prince of Denmark's March and J. Stanley's Trumpet Voluntary. Fantastic selections from Bach, Mozart, and Haydn follow, with the album also including such delightful listening as The Last Rose of Summer, Carnival of Venisee, and Flight of the Bumblebee. You won't be disappointed with this purchase!
Classical Wynton.......2005-07-22
Signature Wynton!! A wonderful grouping of masterfully performed trumpet literature. A "must have" for any trumpet performer. As expected, Wynton displays his virtuosity in a marvelously enjoyable collection of the trumpets finest works. Among these crown jewels of performance, "Moto Perpetuo" is a blazing display of his virtuosity. A wonderful album. I never tire listening to it.

Some old favourites, and some unfamiliar, enjoyable voices and songs.......2007-03-11
This compilation has the usual songs that immediately bring the name of composer Victor Herbert to mind - Ah, sweet mystery of life, I'm falling in love with someone and Tramp, tramp, tramp - with such well known voices as those of Macdonald, Eddy and the famous tenors, Richard Crooks, Richard Tauber and Charles Kullmann.
Perhaps of greater interest to many listeners will be the relatively seldom heard artists, such as John McHugh, Florence Easton and Florence George. All three have very pleasant voices and aural personalities.
It is a somewhat mixed delight to hear Amelita Galli-Curci, John McCormack, Alma Gluck and Richard Werrenrath in recordings from the acoustic era. My personal favourite from that group is Galli-Cutci's charming version of A kiss in the dark.
Altogether, a well chosen mixture of the familiar and the out of the way, carefully and well re-recorded.

Poco Indian Summer.......2007-01-23
This is a four or five star album, but I have only given one as Lemon Records cds are often mastered from vinyl. This is no exception and the Japanese edition is far better with no vinyl noise. Unfortunately, it is more expensive, but if you like this album, it is certainly worth it.
Pleasant, Melodic effort though somewhat ordinary.......2006-10-17
I think its ludicrous to call this the sound of a desperate band as one reviewer has. Its overall a very pleasant outing, well sung, well played and typical melodic songwriting from the various band members. I listened to it a lot when it first came out. It hasn't quite stood the test of time and does show some signs of a band on their last leg (at least in this formation as T.B. Schmit was to leave soon thereafter for the greener pastures of the Eagles).
Strong melodies and great singing do have their place in rock music and there are some nice ones here. Lyrics have never been a Poco strong suit and are typcially slight here. T.B. Schmit's 3 songs are all very good. I always thought it was unfortunate when he moved to the Eagles where he would be limited to 1 song per record rather than the 3 he would normally get with Poco. If you listen to the body of work he did with Poco as compared to the Eagles you will understand. That said none of his songs here are quite as good as his best, but all are worthwhile.
The Paul Cotton songs are pretty good. The title song is one of his best and the rockers such as "Living in the Band" and "20 years on" pretty much delivery the goods. The 10 minute extended 3 part Rusty Young song, "The Dance" is o.k. Unfortunately, when you do the Eagles comparision here to lets say, "Hotel California" you do get a sense of how the Eagles grew as a band while Poco seems to be treading water at this point. None of this should be taken to diminish the impact this band had whether that be on country rock in general or specifically the Eagles.
At this point, Richie Furay was long gone and nobody can dispute the fact that he was the true architect of this sound and Poco itself. Still, this record brings a smile to me even to this day. For die hard Poco fans its still recommended. For others, there are better places to go rather than this effort. In conclusion I would say for the end of the T.B. Schmit Poco era, you would really be better off looking for the live cd, The Last Roundup. It contains a number of songs from Indian Summer in arguably better versions plus outstanding versions of other Poco songs including Rose of Cimarron and a guest appearance by none other than Richie Furay.
Compare and contrast.......2006-07-02
I was always a Poco fan from the very beginning, but when I saw them open for Marshall Tucker Band in Shreveport La. I was completely blown away. I didn't even stay for Marshall Tucker.
It was general admission and I stood at Rusty Young's feet the entire show.
I saw the Eagles twice and other country rock bands but no one ever came close to the show I saw that night. Every member was on and the crowd was too. The performance was one of the best I have ever seen from any band, and I have seen most.
I have the entire Poco collection on LP and am collecting on CD.
Listen to the album Deliverin and it will sell you on the band.
Very Solid Close to the Tim Schmit Era.......2005-12-14
Indian Summer is a very solid, though not particularly remarkable release. Tim Schmit shines on the album, particularly on the fantastic Find Out in Time which may be one of the best songs Schmit ever performed. Unfortunately for Poco fans, the album would turn out to be Schmit's swan song with the band as he jumped ship to join the Eagles after Indian Summer was released.
Paul Cotton stands out front once again on Indian Summer, delivering big time on the laid back title track, and the rockers Twenty Years, Win or Lose and Living in the Band. Rusty Young is not as much of a presence on this album as on the preceding albums, but still delivers some fine steel guitar work as well as giving us a taste of things to come in the future through his song Downfall, his first out-front full lead vocal.
Indian Summer doesn't stand up among the best works in the Poco library, but it is still a very listenable album with some very good moments on it.
One of their best!.......2005-09-01
I am a long-time Poco fan, and gradually acquiring their works on CD. This is one of their best, with great tracks. Paul Cotton shines on this one too, and the title track is good.

Customer Reviews:
One of the best pop / rock albums ever recorded.......2003-08-14
This album also has the best cover I've ever seen, a great (and so unalternative) montage of photos that capture the best season of the year....
'Faithful' is not lyrically, but musically a follow-up of the great 'King Of Wishful Thinking' without copying. THe character of both songs is FRESH like a wave of water, and fun-fun-DAMN fun!!
'Tell Me' gazes at the twilights of the oncoming night and carries a mood of the little clubs with a band playing jazz or pop. 'Crystal Ball' is such a sweet groove, wrapped in a calm mid-tempo, that doesn't rush it.
The more gutsy love songs, 'Still In Love' and 'I Want You Back' head for more musclular vocals and instruments.
Also check out the speedy 'Count Me Out '
THankls Go West
Peter Cox's voice powers 'Indian Summer'.......1998-12-15
This 1992 comeback album from Go West is remarkable in that it isn't a step down from their mid-1980s heyday. Most bands' "comeback" albums sound like they should never have been released, but Peter Cox's superb soul voice powers this recording.
With the exception of "The Sun and the Moon," side one is brilliant. The opening track, "Faithful" is a great, shout-the-chorus song, with earnest vocals, and the other hit, "King of Wishful Thinking," is an up-tempo romp. Other highlights are Kirk Whalum's sax opening on "Still in Love" and the slow cover of "What You Won't Do For Love." Unfortunately, Cox's great vocals take a holiday on the closing side one song, "The Sun and the Moon." The lyrics are sappy to the extreme, and his emotive voice overpowers this weak ballad.
Side two is a little less memorable, but still very good. Highlights are the ballad "Bluebeat" and the super "I Want You Back." On the latter track, Cox rips into a backing arrangement of Richard Drummie's that sounds different than anything Go West has recorded before. With the exception of these two songs and "A Taste of Things to Come," the side two lyrics miss the mark. "Count Me Out" sounds like a million other songs, and "Forget that Girl" could have done without the incredibly silly line: "You're gonna be walking around / With a stone in your shoe / 'Til you forget that girl."
A few minor quibbles aside, it's great that Go West could release such a wonderful comeback album, and it's disappointing that they broke up soon after this one was released.
A CD you'll keep listening to for years........1998-11-13
If you're like me, you play a CD to death after you first get it, then tire of it. I bought Indian Summer in 1993, and it still gets played regularly in my house. Personally, this is my favorite of all the Go West albums. The songs range from sultry ("Still in Love"), to peppy ("A Taste of Things to Come"), to touching ballad("The Sun and the Moon"). Thankfully, the band is able to do all this without being raunchy, mindless, or overly saccharine. Occasionally, the lyrics fall a tad short (hence no 5 star rating), but it's melodic, soulful sounds will, and have, stand the test of time. I highly recommend this album to everyone.
A come back album that captures the energy of their debut........1998-09-16
It was always going to be hard to top the power and arrangements of the first album. Peter Cox's voice is one of those unique and instantly recognised styles that sticks with you. The album migrates between hard raw tracks like "Faithful" and softer ballads as in" What you wont do for love". Peter Cox found his way in his subsequent solo album but for a while Go West were a lasting testament to great melodies and arrangements which make them a regular play choice.

"INDIAN SUMMER" JAMS!!!.......2006-03-16
Charlie Tate and Matt Harris of King Kooba have done a masterful job of producing some exceptionally beautiful, original, soulful and jazzy selections sure to appeal to all. There's truly something for everyone on "Indian Summer"...The carefree opener "Honey Locust", the cool-urbane "A Man Like Andre" and the sassy "You Don't Know" offer futuristic basslines, haunting vocals and stellar scratching and mixing for the consummate jazz/lounge-lizzard. Neo-soul connoiseurs will find tracks like "Losing You", "Barefoot", and "If I Could" a real delight, while your more discerning music listeners will dig other cuts like "Indian Summer", "Blue Mosque" and "Dreaming of You". This one comes highly recommended!
Indian Summer.......2004-02-07
If this were the first album by King Kooba, the other reviews here would be different. This is a marvellously rich album that explores downtempo music in all its complexity without getting too edgy or dark. I didn't like the first King Kooba album NuFound Funk except for Koobesq and California Suite. If you like Air, Stereolab, or some of the softer downtempo artists like Zero 7, you'll probably like this as well.
Wasn't impressed...in fact, I was disappointed.......2003-06-25
This wasn't the King Kooba I've loved especially since my introduction to him from the Om label. I wasn't very impressed with this particular album at all. For the hip-hop lovers, drum-n-bass fiends of old, this won't be your type of hype. I'd say this album was too "house"/disco-nouveau diva if anything. I miss the old Kooba. I have to say "Man Like Andre", "Blue Mosque" and "Salutation" were the only stand-outs for me; the other songs just got too long and boring...Well, I guess they're alright; just gotta pay attention. Just keep and make it plain ol' instrumentally jazzed-hip-hop funky for me! I hope he (Charlie Tate) will produce an album under his other pseudonym "Colossus". A taste of what that is like can be heard on Om Lounge, Vol. 7.
So, three stars for three songs--
WOW!.......2003-05-19
Absolutely amazing. What else can you say? King Kooba is another all-star on the OM records line up. This cd is filled with some of the best and laid back beats ever. Absolute must have. Especially for OM Records followers.
