The very epitome of "been there, done that," LL Cool J also has the distinction of having originated (or, at least, being the most proficient at) half a dozen rap styles. On the hits collection All World, all the phases are represented: he was "hard as hell" on 1986's "Rock the Bells" and again on 1991's "Mama Said Knock You Out"; on 1987's "I Need Love," he was the painfully sappy precursor to Boyz II Men, but he had the formula down pat for 1990's "Around the Way Girl" (and then he went sappy again on 1995's "Hey Lover," a collaboration with the Boyz); and 1988's "Going Back to Cali" found him stylin'. He's had his ups and downs and managed to produce only a couple of truly killer albums, but LL's first dozen years show that he's left his stamp on nearly every facet of the hip-hop world. --Randy Silver
Customer Reviews:
The greatness of Uncle L is based on the first half of his career........2007-04-24
The second half was hit or miss. But for the most part all of LL's biggest hits from the mid 80's to the mid 90's are here.
A Ten Year Span Of Greatest Hits (Rating: 9 out of 10- -4.5 stars).......2007-03-15
Not many people can have an excellent career like LL Cool J. From 1985 to 1995, Uncle L has really given us many rememerable jams for us to kick it with. From old school tracks like "Rock The Bells" and "I'm Bad", LL has proven why he is one of the best of the 80's & 90's. Back in 1990 when I was a kid, one of the first rap songs I heard was "Mama Said Knock You Out", and every time I play that song, it always bring back memories. "Back Seat Of My Jeep" is another classic single that I found to be one of my favorites from this album.
I do have a few guilty pleasures on this album. "Going Back To Cali" is one of them (possibly because of my love for that state). And the female songs like "Jingling Baby" the smooth "Hey Lover" is more that I had an enjoyment for. And the pop song that still gets play on the radio frequently "Loungin (Who Do You Luv Remix)" is another great addition. There are a few songs that are missing (just like almost every greatest hits album), like "Pink Cookies..." and "I'm That Type Of Guy", but I'm not going to sweat that. This album is still excellent for a ten year span of LL. If you're a fan of 80's and 90's rap, don't hesitate to pick this up here. I really started getting into him when he dropped "The G.O.A.T." and thought this CD would help me catch up with his earlier work. Now only if his most recent CD's were half as good as this here.
Peace!
Love LL.......2007-01-19
I love LL. This CD brought back so many memories from back in the day. It's so hard to believe that LL has been in the game for so long and on top. This is a great compilation of his older tracks.

Pop J meets Cool J.......2006-07-31
What up people, it's LL Pop J speaking. Now you may guess: Who inspired me to this name, eh?! Right: The one and only, the grandmaster of rap business, THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME: JAMES TODD SMITH, LL COOL J!!! This CD includes his most succesful titles, from "I can't live without my radio" over "I need love" until "Hey lover". Here you can have a general impression of the meaning of HipHop, what a 17-year-old guy is able to do...

Public Enemy is not the kind of group that does compromise--either you own It Takes A Nation of Millions To Hold Us Back and its explosive follow-up Fear of a Black Planet in their entirety or you simply hate music. So use this all-too-brief primer merely as a map to find your way to the albums that actually shook the world, mixing blunt politics with hard-hitting beats and Chuck D's prophet-like zeal for affecting change. If nothing else, tracks like "Bring The Noise" and "Fight The Power" serve as timely reminders of how much power hip-hop can wield when not tripped up in name-calling and bitch-slapping (D famously dubbed the genre "CNN for black people"), while on "911 is a Joke" Flava Flav proves there's a fine-line between laughter and tears. --Aidin Vaziri
Customer Reviews:
ok, wanted a little more variety.......2006-11-11
not bad, but i thought it'd have some of the other well-known hits on it as well. good for reminiscing about my youth!
This is what got me into Public Enemy!.......2006-08-01
Without a doubt, hip-hop was in its prime during the late 80's and early 90's. Unfortunatly, I didn't even exist untill '91...I was born into the generation of cookie-cutter "gangsta" (c)rap like 50 cent and lil john...oh, how lucky am I...
Anyway, I had heard a few samples from p.e. on tv and the internet, and decided to look for one of their cds. They sounded so different than anything I've heard before. Chuck D's vocal energy and style grabs your attention right away, while Flava's crazy wierdness keeps you hooked. While looking through Wallmart's cd selection, I came across this cd and decided that a greatest hits cd would be a perfect introduction to a group I had never really listened to before.(It was only 10 bucks, so what harm could it be?) Lemme tell ya, after listening through the cd once, my jaw was dropped, and I was floored.
First off, for any fans of pop-rap with candy-coated beats, this cd is NOT for you. Public Enemy are raw, hard, and abrasive. They're definatly not for everyone.
Second, their lyrics are political, and confront many serious issues that were being ignored during that time. Pay close attention, and you'll see that they actually have something important to say and aren't just grunting about their cars, money, hoes, bling-bling, whatever.
Finally, while their music may sound somewhat cacaphony at times, they were definatly way ahead of their time. They have the rare ability to make seemingly clashing noises work together in an intriguing and almost harmoneous way. For example, "Rebel Without A Pause" uses a repetitive screeching tea kettle in the background, which would be ear-drum-breaking in any other circumstance. However, combined with the song's heavy bass and Chuck D's lyrical wit, the kettle becomes less of a nussance and more of an actual instrument that enhances the song's quality. (Yeah, that sounds really stupid, but I don't have any other way of describing it.)
So yeah, that's another one of my rambling reviews. I would recomend this cd to hip-hop fans who are open-minded and ready for beats that are rough and different from anything else. I've become a huge fan of p.e. because of this cd, and I plan to buy more of their work. That's all for now. PEACE
PE Keep Bringin That Noise! [and sonnin' Viper].......2006-07-06
What else can be said about this release? The entire collection of singles (from their Def Jam period) from the most important and influential group ever. It doesnt get much better than this.
Public Enemy albums are consistent affairs with segues, inserts and instrumentals acting as the musical glue for each release. Some have therefore argued that listening to the singles in isolation is a less cohesive affair. I disagree. While Chuck D maintains that the group has never been singles orientated, their discography begs to differ: throughout the early 1990's, Public Enemy single releases were massive affairs accompanied by groundbreaking videos and fantastic cover art. Remember that "Fight the Power" only appeared on "Fear of a Black Planet" some several months after it "hit" - as did the B side release of "Rebel without A Pause" prior to "It Takes a Nation of Millions...".
This collection of singles reinforces their creative output, musicianship and legacy. The groups most commerciably accessible offerings are all here in their high-rotation-strong-unit-sales glory: the aforementioned "Fight The Power", "Hazy Shade of Criminal", "Shut Em Down", "911 Is A Joke" and the hugely popular "Give It Up", arguably the groups most successful single in terms of retail sales.
PE have crammed 18 cuts on to this release - but this just barely represents their release schedule. There are several cuts that have been released as singles and/or videos that are ommitted, including "Livin In A Zoo" (from the CB4 soundtrack), "Get off My Back", "Shake Your Booty", "I Stand Accused", "Louder Than A Bomb (Remix)", "Anti N*gga Machine/Burn Hollywood Burn" and the love-it-or-hate-it Anthrax thrash version of "Bring Tha Noize". A double disc edition with say, 28 tracks would have been nice - but then again, Def Jam/Universal dont want to cannibalise any trailing album sales the groups catalogue may still command!
Oh yeah, the reviewer "Viper" is the embodiment of the typical ignorant white American youth that PE originally set out to educate! Its unfortunate, but he of his ilk will never understand what true hip hop is or represents. "Hip hop" to Viper and most other Generation Y'ers constists of gun toting and talking about how much money you have and how many "biyatchs" youre doing. Grafitti? Breaking? DJ'ing? Beatboxing? Get outa here - that stuff's ancient, right Viper? Cats like Juvenile and Fitty Cent are the truth yeah!? heheheheh!!!!
Not all is lost though - I know plenty of young cats who take the time to check their history and educate themselves. Its just that people like Viper are already a lost cause - this album is the antithesis to his played out, thugged out BS so it will never get heard. But thats okay, cos dudes like me will never check for G Unit or Juvenile - so like PE's ratio of message:music, in the end there is some balance...
Kids, put away your Paul Wall and Nelly albums...this is some REAL rap music.......2006-04-12
Def Jam finally did what was right and released a complete Public Enemy greatest hits compilation. All of the PE classics are here including "Fight The Power", "Welcome To the Terrordome", "Bring The Noise", and "Can't Trust It". If you are not familiar with PE, this compilation is a great opportunity for you to become acquainted with one of the greatest rap groups of all time.
I think they're better than DMC, De La and even NWA..........2006-04-08
Back when Public Enemy were shooting holes in the template, hip hop was already beginning to fracture as Bronx rapper KRS One traded insults with Queens resident MC Shan. But PE's agenda travelled beyond petty territorialism. Their look and sound was without precedent. It would change the face of music in the late twentieth century.
British rock critics hearing white noise and anger, knee-jerked their Punk Rock eulogies but Chuck D (aided by his comic foil Flava Flav) had too much to say to fit in that bracket.
The impact of their second album, It Takes A Nation Of Millions... , is still to be fully realised within hip hop. It made black politics iconic and inspirational to the dispossessed of the nation, and it did it with a soundtrack that reconfigured black music's past into a maximum velocity present.
Producers the Bomb Squad looped funk, jazz, soul, rock - and anything else they could lay their hands on - into a wall of sound that found its natural home way up in the red. Into it, Chuck D's proselytising lyrical barrage merged to form the greatest hip hop act of all time.
Almost everything here is of the highest grade, but for me the pummelling "Welcome To The Terrordome" - the lead-off single from their third album - sounds like the most exciting five minutes ever committed to wax. It's so fierce that it makes the hip hop that followed sound just a little less significant than you thought.
As a summary of a modern musical giant, this album is essential.

Customer Reviews:
Painfully dull, cluelessly retro.......2007-04-29
It's possible that someone out there might still find favor with the over-orchestrated, over-produced music here - the kind that was once commonly used in dentist's offices and elevators to soothe the listener's nerves. These days, while other retro music like Martin Denny can have an agreeably continental flair, Mantovani is just plain dull. This is music of the worst possible type: drained of personality and soul, where even the occasional more modern song (mid sixties) comes off as stilted. This kind of thing has long been replaced by easy-listening jazz; not even the uncoolest of the Star Search generation would be caught dead with this in their closet.
This kind of dreck gives you sympathy for the poor listener whose musical background is so impoverished as to make this music an option.
Lifting the heart.......2007-01-04
Takes you back to a time when really good music was coming from car radios. Believe it or not, these fine tunes were big hits even with younger listeners.
Beautiful Timeless Music.......2006-08-22
Mantovani's Golden Hits has been in my life for many years. I first purchased this particular Sound track for my mother as a Christmas present in the 1960's as a 33 rpm record. She so loved the composer and many of the musical selections. She played this often and I grew up appreciating the gorgeous orchestra music when the rage was rock and roll. My mother died many years ago but I kept her record. I did listen to it as I was raising my children. My son is now getting married and wanted a beautiful waltz to dance with his bride at the reception. He requested my help in finding "Moon River" without the lyrics and in perfect waltz tempo. I immediately pulled out my 33 rpm and played it for him. I then ordered the cd for him to play at his wedding reception. All the selections on this CD are so beautifully arranged and timeless.
mantovani's golden hits.......2006-07-26
i've been looking for this cd for years and found, very happing with it.
BLast from My Past.......2006-07-13
My parents use to listen to Mantovani alot when I was younger. I bought this to relax in the car and at home as well as relive my past. The strings of Mantovani sing through recognizable songs from my past ans are very relaxing. If you want to relax and dream through soaring string sections then this is the record for you.

Customer Reviews:
Introducing the Greatest Voice of All Time.......2007-03-13
A new generation of music lovers deserves to know, understand and appreciate the greatness of Mario Lanza. Five decades after his passing, millions of lovers of "grand voices" still are held in awe by the power, passion and beauty of his voice.
This selection of recordings has a number of fine selections that give a small "flavor" of his fantastic talent and skills. It is a good beginning for someone who wants to know "The American Caruso."
The Greatest Tenor of the 20th Century........2007-01-21
In a professional career that lasted just a bit over ten years Mario Lanza created more memorable recordings, broadcasts, concert perfomances and feature films than any other major vocalist in the classical and pop-jazz music genre. He was a man blessed with arguably the finest tenor voice in recorded music. Fans of Caruso, Pavarotti, Jan Peerce, Placido Domingo or Careras may argue that their tenor interpreted a particular aria better than anyone else but few if any can argue against the sheer beauty, power and emotion of Mario Lanza. He achieved worldwide success too fast and his penchant for the good life: wine, women and good food got the best of him in the end. It is so sad, when one contemplates Lanza's short but brilliant career and what might have been, that he was gone at age 38, an age when some tenors are just beginning to hit their stride. This album is a fine overview of some of his most memorable heavy classics as well as lighter operetta standards and showcases his voice so well. Nearly fifty years have transpired since his untimely death in 1959 and there is yet to appear on the scene a tenor with the power, charisma or sheer beauty of Lanza's voice. I highly recommend this album to the Lanza novice or those just starting their Opera CD collections.
Easy listening.......2006-02-27
I have always liked Mario Lanza and the album is wonderful and relaxing.
Lanza of the joyous voice!.......2005-07-14
This album has some really splendid songs, and yes, it's a good introduction to the King of the high last notes. I grew up with one of Lanza's albums and more or less learned to sing by singing along with his wonderful warm voice. What good energy he had... and too bad he died so young (sigh). It certainly lifts my spirits to listen to his music again and I hope anyone reading this will take a chance and get to know him too.
Not bad as an introduction to Lanza.......2001-11-13
I recommend this collection as a good starting point for those interested in this extraordinary tenor. It's not a complete representation of the man by any stretch of the imagination, but it includes a handful of unforgettable recordings that will make newcomers to Lanza sit up in astonishment.
Highlights include the immortal Serenade & Golden Days from The Student Prince, Beloved (from the film version of the Student Prince, and arguably Lanza's best English-language love song), Because You're Mine, If I Loved You, and the stirring Addio Alla Madre from Cavalleria Rusticana. If love songs seem a little over-represented at the expense of arias and (notably) Italian & Neapolitan Songs, then blame BMG for their habitual neglect of Lanza's more serious side. In any event, this is essentially a one-CD version of the three-CD set, The Mario Lanza Collection. All of the renditions are the same as on the earlier CD, as are the sound sources. With the exception of The Student Prince Serenade, most of the selections here have never sounded better.
Be aware, however, that several of the arias are in fact retakes of more familiar versions. Vesti La Giubba, for instance, is an alternate take from Lanza's May 1950 session, and although the tenor is in great voice, the orchestra lets him down on the climactic phrase by moving on before he has finished his High A on the word "infranto". The Flower Song is even more unrestrained than the familiar take - great fun, but not the kind of recording you'd want newcomers to Lanza to hear! (Lanza never quite "nailed" this aria, but his heart was in the right place.) La Donna E Mobile is the familiar 1950 version in the first half, but is replaced by an inferior retake in the second half, followed by an edited-in High B ending (on "pensier") from the original recording!
The only truly bad recording is the inexplicably popular With A Song In My Heart. Lanza is unfocused, and strains his way throughout the piece. Yours Is My Heart Alone is somewhat better, but is easily surpassed by the tenor's 1956 recording with the conductor Henri Rene (and currently unavailable on CD).
The "Greatest Hits" are here: the million-selling Be My Love, Loveliest Night of The Year and the aforementioned Because You're Mine. I have to confess to an aversion to the first two - Lanza was often a far better singer than these recordings suggest - but most fans, I'm sure, will continue to cherish them. Besides, what tenor since Lanza has ever sung Be My Love without straining his way through the wretched thing and then fudging the High C at the end? Lanza made it his own, and to be fair to the song, it is actually a very difficult piece to pull off, as Messrs Domingo, Carreras and Leech will no doubt attest. But that was also one of Lanza's most under-appreciated strengths - he made everything sound so easy. Listeners accustomed to the laborious efforts of most present-day tenors will be astounded by the freshness, ease, and sheer bravado of these performances.

Wonderful Songs, Strong voice.......2007-05-19
This album has many of his best songs. Well worth the cost. It will be a collector's item.
Wonderful.......2007-02-01
Charles Aznavour's music is beautiful, his songs are soulful, and the way he portrays them is heartfelt. We continue to listen to this album and look forward to enjoying others like it.
Formidable!.......2007-01-05
English version is almost as good as his french, but when he sings in french there is not enough stars.
Formidable.......2006-09-22
I saw Mr. Aznavour perform recently during his farewell tour. This CD will give me fond memories of the songs he sang in English. He is a wonderful performer in any language. This CD will give those who do not speak French access to the beautiful songs he has written and his unforgettable voice.
The french frank sinatra???.......2006-01-09
I got this CD because the cover looked interesting and well, based on my gut instinct i gave it a chance. It's OK
I mean i'm not a huge Sinatra fan and it sounds like that to me...a french sinatra in this case.
I guess you just have to be into it because in the end putting your tastes aside it's good.
Happy anniversary and la boheme are the highlights in my opinion.

Customer Reviews:
Blast from the past.......2007-07-08
While on a cruise The Happenings were our entertainment. I realized how good music was from my era...and stocked up on their music.
If you like the Happenings..........2007-02-22
Hard to find music from the 60's, this group of a one-hit wonder was what I've searched for a while.
Good except for some tracks.......2006-03-23
I love the songs, I had an 8-track a million years ago. The only thing wrong with the CD is that on some tracks you can't hear the vocals, or some of the instruments can't be heard. It seems the sounds aren't equal. I don't know anything about the conversion to CD, but it lost quite a bit in the translation. I have seen this alot though in some of the older music. Still love the songs, though.
Great CD - one song a remake, but most sound original.......2005-08-13
The one song I know is a remake is "Goodnight My Love." I know this because I have it on the original 45 issue and the CD version is an inferior remake. But the others with which I'm familiar - but don't have original vinyl to compare, only memories - seem authentic.
The audio quality is great and certainly superior to some of the CDs you find these days which are only re-recordings of old vinyl or cassettes.
Wonderful CD.......2003-06-24
This CD helps me to complete my library of great music of a wonderful era in American history. A must CD for a collector and a great group of musicians

A fine sampler.......2003-04-24
I purchased this CD to sample some of the pieces of Rimsky-Korsakov that I did not already own. The CD is a compilation of recognized conductors. The performances are competent, if not really inspired. Rimsky-Korsakov offers very listenable, approachable music and very rich orchestration. But this is a sampler, where most pieces are incomplete. If you are ready to jump in with both feet, purchase Scheherazade & Russian Easter Overture by Jose Serebrier, Scherazade & Cappricio Espanol by Mackerras/LSO, and Neeme Jarvi on Chandos ($$) for the rest.
I was first put off by the sonics of this CD, particularly the dynamic range, but this varies with each of the many recorded pieces.
In its favor, this CD is inexpensive, but don't expect to receive more than what you pay.
OUTSTANDING.......2002-09-16
This is a good selection of outstanding works of one of the best Russian composers. I enjoyed it very much.
Fun CD.......2002-01-29
I really appreciated the variety on this CD, from the light, bouncy bumblebee to the more bombastic pieces. I think this makes a really good intro to Korsakov's works.

Old School Rap At Its Best!.......2007-03-10
Whodini has to be one of my favorite old school rap groups of all time! They have a distinct style and original background beats that no one else can match. "Five Minutes Of Funk" is one of my all-time favorite rap songs, particularly since the lyrics are recognizable, and free of all that annoying yelling and screaming modern-day rappers like to force on listeners. It's also free from another annoyance of today's rap music: shout-outs... There's nothing more annoying than a rap song full of nothing but shout-outs to a bunch of people that listeners don't care about. This album, aside from "Five Minutes Of Funk", has plenty of other tracks to keep your attention. "One Love" is a smooth-rhythm track with a nice, mellow tempo. It also has some creative lyrics that makes the song resemble somewhat of a rap-ballad. "Friends" is a song that just about every rap fan recognizes and memorizes, and "Freaks Come Out At Night" is a staple of all old school rap fans' collections. Both are heavily recognizable songs that anyone from the '80's that followed rap will recall. You will likely enjoy "I'm A Ho" since it's a comical track with creative style of rhymin' to a rather silly theme. "Escape" was an underrated track, since most fans don't recall that one unless they bought Whodini's album. That song was not a popular radio play, but still a good one to listen to for buyers. "Funky Beat" is one of Whodini's later releases, and a bit different than their more original material. However, it still lends a unique backdrop beat along with catchy lyrics. This compilation ranks as one of my favorites of all time, and if you're into old school rap at all, it will rank up there for you as well.
Classic rap in the mid 1980's...................2007-01-15
Whodini was big in the mid eighties with hits like 5 Minutes of Funk, Friends, One Love, Big Mouth and the Freaks Come Out at Night. This album was undoubtedly one of the top rap albums of 1984-1985. All of Whodini's big hits are on this one album. Nuff respect to Jahlil, Grand Master Dee and Extasy.
Long Overlooked, But Crucial To Hip-Hop History!!.......2006-10-29
Whodini was one of the best of the early hip-hop
trios and they had quite a following and string of hits
as this collection will attest!
I remember seeing them back in summer 1984 with
the then new Run DMC fresh off the success of
"It's Like That", "Hard Times" & "Sucka MC's"!!
Whodini had "Haunted House Of Rock", "Freinds",
"The Freaks Come Out At Night" and the classic
"5 Minutes of Funk" out then and
they really stopped the show!
Later came the other jams like "One Love",
"I'm A Ho!!" and others that left their mark
with early hip-hoppers.
I hope that they will get their just due and be honored
on VH-1's Hip-Hop Honors for 2007.
I always wanted a leather hat just like the one that guy who
was the lead MC use to rock!! (LOL!!)
They were just as crucial as Kurtis Blow, Sugarhill,
Run DMC, LL COOL J and all the others who we think of
now as icons of the game!---Much Love & Respect!!
Funky Fresh Favorite !.......2006-01-23
This review only deals with a bunch of the songs on this as I only have 45s of Whodini's and they are all included. These are Friends, Five Minutes Of Funk, and Freaks Come Out At Night.
At the time of its release, I became a big fan of "If I Ruled The World" by Nas feat. Lauryn Hill, mostly because I felt an electroshock every time I heard that electronic sample, in the background of the verses. Well, that was Whodini's "Friends" and their trademark electronic sound that fits just right into the Hip Hop frame as far as melodies goes, even today.
Whodini managed to appeal to wider audiences than other first generation Hip Hop, girls in particular probably because of their more melodic sound, occasionaly involving singing. Anyway, to set the record straight with the review by Little Rich Kid and anyone else who might have the same misconceptions about Whodini. This is what is properly known as old school hip hop, that is Hip Hop in the early 80s. And yes, hip hop was originally based on rather Disco cuts than funk/soul. Good Times anyone?
The other artists Lil Rich Kid listed as fake rap are Kool Moe D (former Treacherous Three) and Kurtis Blow, namely a pick of the very first artist to put out Hip Hop albums at the time (along with GrandMaster Flash) as opposed to just singles. Without the input from these guys, Hip Hop just would not be as we know it today.
What he lists as Good Rap are all artists from the next generations of hip hop. In other words, he just does not like old school hip hop to start with, so his review falls pretty short of meaning. I would not find it constructive to go criticize a metal album because I don't like metal. This would not help metalheads to decide what to buy and what to avoid.
As for the review goes, Whodini's stuff is pretty tight on production, using loads of electronics and drum machines in a pretty successful way, that will allways fit well in an old school mix or an electro one in my opinion. The rappin is old school but pretty good, keeping a good balance between the music and the lyrics. Nice elctro breaks to be used in mixes or just to dig on your iPod.
I'll just give it four stars as I do not know the rest of the compilation, it is still worht getting for these three tunes.
Flashback.......2005-09-11
The reason i got it is cause I was in Oakland at a flee market and found an og poster board of whodini, utfo and the real roxanne performing at the Paramount in Otown in 1982. I bought the piece and now want that music in my iPod. This is the real OG and ya have to be OG to recognize. Not on the coattails of trend off Ludlow St.

Jackpot !!!.......2007-03-23
Sarah Vaughan possessed a voice with a remarkably broad range; and her audiences loved her for this wherever she went to perform. Sarah enjoyed challenges, too; on this CD she performs both "Autumn In New York" and "Moonlight In Vermont" in full range. Sarah makes it sound easy; but we know it really isn't quite that simple to sing the way Sarah sang. We are all better off for Sarah's sharing her talents with us on great albums like this one.
The tracks set starts out with a beautiful rendition of "Misty." The orchestration glistens as Sarah delivers this without singing a superfluous note. The musical arrangement relies on the strings and horn to carry the bulk of the melody; and they do not fail to disappoint. Sarah's voice is as rich, warm and vibrant as ever on this track; I predict you will love this rendition of "Misty."
The CD continues with "Broken Hearted Melody" with a male chorus backing up Sarah as she sways and sings this song to perfection! The melody may sound somewhat upbeat; but this stands in sharp contrast to the lyrics which explore Sarah's feelings about a love gone awry.
"Autumn In New York" boasts a beautiful intro by the violins; and when Sarah comes in you're in heaven. Sarah uses her voice to convey a certain intimacy and sense of vulnerability both at the same time; this number is a golden nugget shining brightly! Sarah hopes for a new love when she sings "Autumn In New York." She celebrates New York with this song, too. "Moonlight In Vermont" follows "Autumn In New York;" and Sarah sings this soulfully and wistfully. "Moonlight In Vermont" allows Sarah to deliver a pensive ballad and the orchestration is lush. Sarah's voice is in excellent form and the percussion enhances the beauty of this number.
"Whatever Lola Wants" gets the Latin treatment and a male backup chorus to accompany Sarah. Sarah sings of her ability to get "whatever (she) wants" because she, as Lola, is "irresistible" to men. This romantic ballad shines brightly with Sarah's voice, the orchestration and the backup chorus all combining to produce a high octane performance! When Sarah tells you to "give in," you can intuitively understand why.
"Lullaby Of Birdland" is yet another great song on this CD; the drums, percussion and Sarah's voice produce a winning ticket yet again! The flawless melody and lyrics are by Shearing and Foster; and the piano playing shines to perfection as well.
Equally important, this CD gives you six bonus tracks to enjoy. I have this album on LP in my collection; but the CD is much better for this reason alone! SMILES "Lover Man" begins with a brief but excellent piano solo; when Sarah starts to sing her voice captures all your attention as she sings this torch ballad about a man she loved; but he did not love her in return. The musical instruments play softly in the background to showcase Sarah's voice as its own musical instrument on "Lover Man." The next bonus number is the timeless classic "Tenderly" which Sarah sings passionately. Sarah's voice remains in excellent form as she displays her wide vocal range to bat this number straight out of the ballpark. "C'est La Vie" is about love that goes unrequited; and the CD ends with "The Banana Boat Song." This final number gets the predictable Latin treatment and Sarah is accompanied once again by a superb male chorus. Sarah sings about men who work hard and dream of an easier life without such hard work. This final number rounds out the CD very well.
The liner notes give you the song credits and the original liner notes for the record album when it was originally released. Will Friedwald contributes an excellent essay about Sarah Vaughan's unforgettable talent.
I highly recommend this CD for people who want to become better acquainted with Sarah's artistry. Sarah's fans will consider this CD to be a "must-have;" and people who enjoy classic pop vocals will love this CD, too. The extra six bonus tracks make this CD a very special one.
classic and memorable.......2007-01-11
This compilation represents 'Sassy' at her most famous and of course best. It is an excellent introduction to the famous songstress for those unaware of what she has to offer. What goes into making a singer great is the voice and style. When heard, you can easily identify the voice regardless of the song. Others who fall into that category include Ella Fitzgerald, Dionne Warwick, Nancy Wilson, Julie Andrews, Barbara Streisand just to name a few.
I really want to give it five stars but...........2006-11-18
This is a very good overview of some career highlights for Young Sassy, but don't expect any information whatsoever about the players on a single song; or comments about chart position; nor do you get a single bit of information about the year, the producer or session that a particular song was recorded. What you get are excellent songs that are very eclectic and liner notes that tell us how great Sarah was.
Well, just who would buy this c.d. that did not already know that much?
If you want more information regarding the music try another collection.
excellent now - excellent fifty years ago !.......2005-10-29
I see no need to make this review a long one, for Sarah Vaughan's performance on this 'Golden hits' can only be described in superlatives. The text on its sleeve hits it right: "here are the songs and the moods that have established miss Vaughan in a niche that is now forever beyond challenge".
Being recorded some fifty years ago, the music on this CD hasn't been dented in any way by the passage of time. It won't be for the next fifty years either.
Golden Hits Indeed!.......2003-07-13
I was first introduced to Sarah Vaughan from a compilation jazz cd from the Verve label. The song was Misty and since I haven't heard anyone sing that song any better than Vaughan. This cd contains most of her greatest hits but indeed she's song countless more. A few songs are okay but the majority are truly golden!

Cool Cube.......2007-07-06
Ice Cube's Greatest Hits is solid, tho not great. He's not as catchy by himself as NWA was as a crew. Nevertheless, this is good rap, telling stories from the urban streets. Also, unlike NWA, there's not teh element of glamorizing gangsta stuff. Ice Cube just tells it like it is, with gritty realism, including acknowledging that the stuff is bad. Here are some notable raps on this disc:
Check Yoself - includes a cool line from the Grandmaster Flash tune "It's like a jungle sometimes it makes we wonder how I keep from goin' under."
Once Upon a Time in the Projects - descriptive, kinda humoress story about getting caught up in a bust when he visits his girlfriend in the projects
It Was a Good DAy - raps about how it was a good day, just cuz none of the usual bad stuff happens.
My Summer Vacation
Bop Gun - really energetic and bouncy
What Can I Do
Time For Remaster...Fans Can Do It At Home!.......2006-09-13
I agree with many of the reviewers here, and there are a ton of classics missing from 'Ice Cube's Greatest Hits'. This is a very good collection (with a new tracks & remixes!) to start off with if you simply want most of the popular hits, BUT there's room for at least 3 additional tracks, and I just HAD TO remaster the CD myself (sorry I can't wait for the record company to wake up!). If you have 'Ice Cube's Greatest Hits', consider adding the following classic joints as BONUS TRACKS -
18. 'No Vaseline' (fr.1991's 'Death Certificate')
19. 'Wicked' (fr.1992's 'The Predator')
20. 'How To Survive In South Central'
(fr.1991's 'Boys In The Hood' SDTK)
Overall, Ice Cube's 'Greatest Hits' CD falls a little short, BUT you can take it up a notch by adding these 3 tracks for a cool 20 track collection!!
Peace, SD
(of 'Chaka's World')
I think this isn't entertaining........2006-05-07
I think this album is boring. I think it doesnt do its job. I think ice cube is a wannabe. I think he needs to get a real job. I think this broke very soon after i got it. I think this won't play in most cd players. i think the cover looks stupid. i think it gave me the idea to put an ice cube in the microwave. i think art is stupid. I think i don't recommend this. I think ive said enough
