About the Artist
When it comes to the harmonica, French-born jazz harmonicist Frédéric Yonnet knows how to turn skeptics into believers. Most people perceive the harmonica as a "side" instrument used in country and blues. However, Yonnet is one of a handful of musicians to successfully demonstrate the harmonica's versatility as a lead instrument in contemporary jazz, as well as other genres of music.
Product Description
Just listen to his sound. It funks. It rocks. It hips and hops. It grooves. It sways. It testifies. It prays. It has a reverence for blues and jazz while appealing to a generation raised on pop-rock and hip-hop. As part of a new wave of musicians emerging from Europe's jazz underground, Yonnet is poised to change the way the music industry and music enthusiasts regard the "pocket" instrument.

Customer Reviews:
Fans can never be objective..........2006-04-26
From the OBJECTIVE reviewer...Shawn Mullins is underrated, but nevertheless this is not his best performance. He sounds good with an acoustic guitar and his storytelling songs, but after a while it just starts putting you to sleep.
One of the Best Albums I've Ever Heard.......2001-11-11
Put simply, this is probably my all-time favorite album. If you like looking at how Shawn Mullins sounds without all the "produced" new stuff, then get this album. The stripped-down version of "Shimmer" is worth the price alone. Truly one of our best modern-day poets/storytellers.
My all-time favorite album.......2001-11-03
This is absolutely my all-time favorite album. I can listen to it over and over and over and ... and i mean that. If you like Shawn's new stuff, to me, this is even better. Likable, some fun songs, some serious songs, and great guitar to go with it.
The Best of Shawn.......2001-08-14
Instead of writing a typical review of this album, I will provide you with five good reasons as to why you should purchase this album:
1. On this album, Shawn uses his deep voice and perfectly matched melodies to create a mood and a sound that resonate long after the album in finsihed playing.
2. The lyrics are shatteringly true. This album will relate to those who have had to make difficult choices in life, to those who have fallen in love, to those who have had their hearts broken, to those who are confused with what life has to offer, and to those who feel like they are a lost soul.
3. With each song, the listener becomes more engaged with the lyrical journey. Whether you have heard all of his music or heard none of his music, you will connect with the songs on this album - it IS that good.
4. Track # 12: Shimmer. To those who are fans of Shawn's music already, this version of the song is the reason to run out and buy the album. He plays the song with more heart, and he is more exposed. While he plays this song as it should be played - Shawn, his voice, and his guitar - the listener feels as though they are in the room with him as he is recording the song.
5. When in the right mood, this album and these songs will hit all of the right "notes." Once again, he touches on emotions and feelings that we all feel as though we have felt; he exposes his life with honesty, and he creates a listening experience that is like no other.
I urge you to buy this album.
Wow!.......2001-01-13
I went to the store to get Soul's Core back in December of... 97, I guess. They had several Shawn Mullins CDs, and Eggshells was the cheapest, so I got it, as well. Wow!! I have loved this album ever since. It's just... incredible. You can *feel* the music, hear everything he's thinking and feeling in his voice. My favorite are "Two Choices (My Ship)", "Joshua" (I'm writing a play based on this song, actually), "Cycle of Our Souls", "Eggshells" (my when-I'm-deppressed theme song) and "Salt Lake City 1973". The accoustic version of "Shimmer" is excellent, as well, and if you like it you should check out Jeff's Last Dance Vol. I, an album you can purchase from Shawn's independent record label's site. Anyway, if you like bluesy, folky, jazzy accoustic rock, then BUY THIS CD!!! You won't regret it.

Fresh and refreshing.......2007-06-13
Great songwriting and great singers. Fresh and refreshing. Who says they don't write 'em like this anymore!
So much fun, I laughed out loud!.......2002-11-03
This album is filled with songs that were such fun, i found myself laughing out loud. This CD also has some great ballads featuring Susan Egan and Tami Tappan and others which truly sent shivers up my arm. If you are a big broadway fan, this album is for you. I really wish Tami Tappan would do an album of her own. Her voice is so lovely, every note she carries out with such perfection. Can't get enough of Tami Tappan!!!
SHE WRITES GOOD!!.......2002-02-21
It's always a pleasure to hear Adryan Russ's material. I was familiar with her musical "Inside Out"--even made it my business to see it when it played off-Broadway in NYC. But this CD gave me a chance to sample from her diverse catalogue of songs. Some of my favorites: "I Want To Live This Love" (destined to be a pop sensation when the right artist finds it),"The Gift" (should be a Holiday classic), and the lovely "Matters Of The Heart." There's also some sensational performances on the CD. Karen Benjamin sings a poignant "Hopscotch," Sharon McKnight delivers a sensational "I Slip Into This Place" and Adryan herself (who has a wonderful voice) scores with "Number." I rate this CD as one of my best buys of the last year!!
Extraordinary!.......2002-02-19
This is an extraordinary recording. Every song is top-notch. I was literally glued to my seat listening to every note and lyric until I had listened to the CD in it's entirety. It's rare that ANY recording can hold my attention like that. Susan Egan's poignant rendition of, "I Hate to See You Go" brought tears to me eyes. And at the same time, there are songs like, "Them" ,that made me laugh out loud. This is a great CD. The songs are great. The artists are great. (Adryan Russ actually sings a song herself. Her voice is GORGEOUS!) The arrangments are BEAUTIFUL. The world is definitely going to hear more of Adryan Russ. So, buy this CD while you can still get a copy!!!!!
Everyone Has A Story.......2002-01-28
With unmistakably Broadway melodic lines, razor-sharp lyrics and wide-eyed performances by top cabaret stars like Sharon McNight and out Jason Graae, EVERYONE finally puts this gifted composer front and center. Russ, best known for her off-Broadway musical Inside Out, couldn't ask for a more convincing showcase. Thanks to the dedication of the participants - especially arranger Grant Geissman and producer Bruce Kimmel - what could have been a mixed bag is an embarrassment of riches. You'll hear shimmers of Menken, Hamlisch, and Shire, but more often, an original voice sings out.

This is an acoustic set - 3.5 stars.......2006-03-23
This is basicly acoustic material from the Jamaica born Detroit bluesman. I've heard more electric material from this artist but the unplugged style suits him well. It may not make one forget Robert Johnson but it's a pretty good disc and fans of acoustic blues will want to search this one out.

Album Description
Frédéric Yonnet is regarded as one of the most skilled and imaginative young diatonic harmonica players on the international music scene today. Determined to expand the way that people regard the "pocket" instrument, Yonnet uses the harp as a lead instrument in jazz, R&B, pop and neo-soul music. Yonnet's latest CD project positions the musician where he and his harmonica deservingly need to be -- Front and Center.
On this 11 track CD, Yonnet pays homage to one of his musical inspirations, Stevie Wonder, with a speedy version of Boogie on Reggae Woman. In Days Of Wine And Roses, Yonnet shuffles up-tempo workouts with African, Latin and European rhythms to add some "Afropean spice" to the jazz standard. Yonnet goes all out with his bluesy, high-energy interpretation of God Bless The Child. "Including a range of standards and popular cover songs in my repertoire allows people to focus less on the song and more on my interpretation through the harmonica." As a bonus, three tracks from Yonnet's sampler CD, Blowing Your Mind in Every Key of the Harp, are included on Front and Center. They include a live, spirit-filled version of Amazing Grace, a bass and harmonica duet of Autumn Leaves, and Michel Herblin's original Eden Legrand. "We got such great feedback from people who liked these songs - especially Amazing Grace -- that I was encouraged to include them on my first full length CD", says Yonnet. "The Amazing Grace track was actually a 'jam' recorded live at a church in Los Angeles," said Yonnet. "I had never played with the musicians before but once we connected, it was very powerful. No doubt, listeners will appreciate the blessing.

Customer Reviews:
Important collection of Broadway musical classics.......2004-08-16
I have owned this set for some time, and Disc 2 is one of my all-time favorite CDs. Its packed with fabulous important milestones from the 1940's, like "You Can't Get A Man With A Gun", "South America, Take It Away", the original of the incomparable "September Song", and lots of fun smutty lyrics from various Cole Porter numbers. A must-have for fans of classic Broadway musical theater.
Great retrospective of the history of Broadway!.......2003-07-01
how is it that so many great songs have been performed all in one place? Broadway. This collection brings it all to you in one set. From the most romantic songs to the wackiest, you will receive a colelction of songs that will be pleasing to every ear.
Hilarious are the songs by Ethel Merman. With her grandiose personality and strong vocal pipes, she belts those songs out whether they be serious songs or novelty songs.
Eddie Cantor makes a few appearances too! The legends are here!
93 classic performances by Broadway's legendary stars.......2003-04-09
"Front Row Center: The Broadway Gold Box 1935-1988" presents 93 classic performances by the legendary stars of Broadway. Strange to believe, but before October 1943 when Decca Records President Jack Kapp arranged to record selection from the Rodgers & Hammerstein smash hit "Oklahoma!", there was no tradition of recording orignal cast albums of Broadway shows (the British had been doing it for years). This means we only have Carmen Miranda doing "South American Way" from "Streets of Paris" and Mary Martin singing "My Heart Belongs to Daddy" because these songs were recorded on their own as singles. The entire first disc of this four CD set is devoted to songs that pre-date "Oklahoma!", an alternate finale of which is the first track on disc two.
Personally, I picked this collection up because it had Katharine Hepburn singing the title song from her one Broadway musical, "Coco" (today the entire album is available on CD). Chances are that if you love Broadway musicals you already have "If I Love You" from "Carousel," "The Impossible Dream (The Quest)" from "Man of La Mancha," and "Don't Cry for Me, Argentia" from "Evita." But some of these tracks are familiar songs sung by different artists you might not have (e.g., Ben Vereen doing "Superstar" from "Jesus Christ Superstar"). Still, the chief attraction here are songs that you might have heard about but never actually heard like Irving Berlin doing his own song "Oh, How I Hate to Get Up in the Morning" from "This is the Army" and Pearl Bailey's "There Must Be Somethin' Better Than Love" from "Arms and the Girl." Then there are just those songs that you have always loved and just need to add to your music library, like Ray Bolger's "Once in Love With Amy" from "Where's Charley?" and Lauren Bacall's "Welcome to the Theater" from "Applause."
Look over the songs that are on these four CDs and see how many you recognize. For those you do not, think of them as glimpses of new musicals for you to discover and new cast albums for you to track down. Right now I am interested in finding "Mack & Mabel," "Seventh Heaven," and "Follow The Girls." Eventually, it might happen. Hopefully the musicals that most intrigue you from this collection are already available (e.g., "Big River").
INVALUABLE!.......2001-07-01
For anyone interested in the music or history of American Musical Comedy, this set of 4 CD's is absolutely invaluable!
Here are some of the most wonderful selections from Decca's library of show music...some are familiar like Mary Martin as the title character in Kurt Weill and Ogden Nash's "One Touch Of Venus" singing the classic love song "Speak Low" or the irreplaceable Ethel Merman belting out "Eadie Was A Lady" from a forgotten 1932 Richard Whiting-B.G.DeSylva-Nacio Herb Brown musical called "Take A Chance" to the totally unfamiliar (at least to me) Gertrude Niesen singing "I Wanna Get Married" from the 1944 "Follow The Girls" or Ricardo Mantalban and Gloria DeHaven in a bright duet "Sun At My Window, Love At My Door" from the flop musical version of the hit movie "Seventh Heaven." (1955)
Ray Bolger is here in songs from "Where's Charley?." So is Nancy Walker telling us that she's "The First Girl In The Second Row" from "Look Ma, I'm Dancin!" Sammy Davis is represented in his first musical starring role as "Mr. Wonderful" and Carmen Miranda sings in her heavily accented English "South American Way" from a 1939 show called "Streets of Paris." There are even songs from off-Broadway shows like Jerry Herman's "Parade." You'll hear actors who sing-speak like Katharine Hepburn and actors who really sing like Carol Burnett and Susan Johnson, Alfred Drake and Pearl Bailey.
Altogether 93 show tunes and a booklet with original cast photographs, statistics on each song and a fine, lengthy essay about Decca Records and the shows from 1935 ("At Home Abroad") to 1988 ("Romance, Romance") HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Customer Reviews:
disappointed.......2007-06-28
Marissa sang each song beautifully and did the best she could with what she had to work with on this CD but the material seemed bland. Having seen her in Annie etc. she has proven that she is a vocal powerhouse but the material on this CD did not showcase that.
Wonderful CD!!!!!!!.......2007-01-06
WONDERFUL! We bought this CD after seeing Marissa completely blow away the crowd singing the national anthem in Giants stadium. We've listened to it non-stop ever since we got it. The songs are original, the production is pristine and the singer is awesome. Marissa is very talented young girl with a crystal clear voice. Pick this up if you want a quality album through and through.
Disappointing.......2007-01-04
Having seen Annie, I thought this girl would be the next music star. It seems like the Annie curse has befallen yet another star. They are magnificent in their Annie role, but just can't seem to get out of that box of loud, belty, baby voice. Perhaps when Marissa's uncharacteristically young voice matures, she will outgrow the American Girl, baby, breathy voice. It seems all the kids coming out of American Girl have that same sound - pretty but can't make a good crossover to pop.
Leave this CD alone, as it lacks the energy and fun that tweens/teens can enjoy.
