With his horn-rimmed glasses, wacky stage antics, upturned trumpet, and those bulbous cheeks, John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie (1917-93) was one of the architects of bebop and Latin jazz. This sampler, culled from his Verve-associated recordings from 1950 to 1963, is the "soundtrack" to Donald L. Maggin's thorough biography Dizzy : The Life and Times of John Birks Gillespie. The stellar lineup includes pianists Thelonious Monk, Oscar Peterson, and Kenny Barron, saxophonists James Moody, Stan Getz, and Charlie Parker, and drummers Buddy Rich and Max Roach. Diz's swing-at-the-speed-of sound genius ranges from the quicksilver quartet burners "Bebop, and "Leap Frog," to the big band/large ensemble numbers, "Cool Breeze" and "Africana." "Blue Moon" features Gillespie with his swing era idol, Roy Eldridge. But the most striking selection is the Ellington/Tizol standard "Caravan," with Gillespie leading an Afro-Cuban percussion ensemble with the great conguero, Candido. Mario Lanza was, arguably, the greatest tenor and greatest singer of this and the last century. It is difficult to appreciate him without listening to a variety of selections. This collection has some of his best recordings and exhibits the versatility and variety that he possessed that permitted him to "crossover" from opera to popular music with a ease.

I recommend this for those who already know Lanza to some extent but want to go into more depth and understand his marvelous skills.

I had forgotten what a beautiful voice Mario Lanza had. This collection contains opera and pop selections that exhibit the power yet sweetness of his voice. Fortunately, we have his CD's and videos so we can remember and listen to his gorgeous, vibrant voice and personality. I highly recommend this collection along with his wonderful movies, especially The Great Caruso.

The Mario Lanza Collection is a three CD set and it has 61 songs and they all sound great. The mastering on this set is excellent and the song choice is very very good. It would have been perfect if they added a forth CD with more Arias, Italian songs and Sacred Arias. BUT still this set is a great introduction to Lanza. Lanza's voice was powerful and beautiful; if you are a fan of great singing, you will love Lanza. Highlights on this CD set are; Be my Love, Because your Mine, Serenade, With a Song in My Heart, Temptation, The Lord's Prayer, Ciribirbin, O Solo Mio, Ariverducci Roma, and on and on. They are many many great songs on this set, and I highly recommend it.

This is a beautiful collection of songs. Once again it exhibits the depth and breath of Mario Lanza's vocal abilities. It is wonderful to hear him sing such lovely melodies. It is also splendid to read Derek Mannering's explanation of how Lanza interpreted each song with his heart and soul. For anyone who is a fan of Mario's, this collection is worth the price.

Most of these songs are from the popular radio show he did in the 50's, when his voice was at it's best. I own numerous Lanza cds, and I can never get enough of his glorious voice and these beautiful songs. A lot of them can be found on other albums, it's true, but the first song is a previously unreleased gem, which was a big selling point with me. How could I pass this up? Also a lot of the songs are different versions from others I have, so this album was definately a must have, for me. I think that anyone who is a true Lanza fan, will love this cd.

Derek Mannering has done it again in releasing yet another first class CD collection by the "Voice of the Century", Mario Lanza. Most of the items on this album have been previously released either on vinyl, CD, or both, but this collection is worth having nonetheless. The one item here never before released is the beautifully sung "All the Things You Are" and did Lanza ever serve this one up in first class fashion. The singing here is extremely fresh and vibrant. A recording that I don't believe has been on CD before is the "You Are Love", from Showboat, presented here (different from the performance on the definitive "Don't Forget Me" C). Lanza shows us here a truly passionate and ardent Gaylord Revenal. No other singer sang this song as well. "On the Street Where You Live" is given a very virile and beautiful rendition by Lanza. I don't know where or when I have ever heard the song "Where or When" sung this well. The rest of the selections on this offering are terrific as well, but can be found on other collections. This collection is worth owning, if for no other reason than for the four selections previously mentioned. The sound quality is excellent, giving the Mario Lanza voice the benefit of its full presence. Lanza definitely had a true flair for the popular song and Broadway ballad, as well as the ringing operatic aria, no doubt about it. If you're looking for a collection of classic standard and Broadway tunes performed with the mastery and excellence that only Mario Lanza could deliver, this CD is the one for you. Highly recommended!!!

The Turtle Island String Quartet has always been known for stretching stylistic and instrumental limits. Despite several personnel changes, its adventurous spirit of exploration is intact, and the baritone violin, that extraordinary hybrid instrument introduced by Darol Anger, is now being played by David Balakrishnan. The program on this disc has a Latin American orientation, with influences of Cuba, Brazil, Mexico, and the Caribbean, as well as African rhythms and American jazz. The pieces are all written or arranged by members of the group; their guest, the virtuoso clarinetist Paquito D'Rivera, contributes two compositions.

The playing is splendid. When string players make their instruments sound like saxophones, guitars, slap-basses, drums, and castanets, string quartet fans tend to get a bit uneasy, but these musicians can also sound like a real string quartet capable of producing a mellow, beautiful tone as well as every imaginable color effect, like ponticello, pizzicato, and barriolage. Moreover, the conversational give-and-take between them is in the best chamber music tradition. The slow pieces have a lilting, songful lyricism; the fast ones jump, dance, and run around brilliantly. To a classically oriented listener, the least convincing numbers are those based on classical pieces, like "Girl from Pathetique," frankly inspired by Tchaikovsky, and "Schizo Grosso," supposedly inspired by Beethoven. "A Night in Tunisia" is a showpiece for the clarinetist and he plays it to the hilt. --Edith Eisler

Danzon is an excellent record! I have been listening to TISQ since they began in the eighties. They are supurb musicians all the way around. Their use of the standard emsemble string quartet seems to get brighter and more astounding with each record. A good example of the versitility of the band is heard with Girl From Pathetique. They stretch their range here and take it a little bit outside. The whole CD is consistent, masterfully arranged and performed. If you have heard this band, this one might be a good place to start. Having Paquito D'Rivera is an extra, EXTRA bonus. I keep hoping they will get the attention they deserve. Great spin!

          With his horn-rimmed glasses, wacky stage antics, upturned trumpet, and those bulbous cheeks, John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie (1917-93) was one of the architects of bebop and Latin jazz. This sampler, culled from his Verve-associated recordings from 1950 to 1963, is the "soundtrack" to Donald L. Maggin's thorough biography Dizzy : The Life and Times of John Birks Gillespie. The stellar lineup includes pianists Thelonious Monk, Oscar Peterson, and Kenny Barron, saxophonists James Moody, Stan Getz, and Charlie Parker, and drummers Buddy Rich and Max Roach. Diz's swing-at-the-speed-of sound genius ranges from the quicksilver quartet burners "Bebop, and "Leap Frog," to the big band/large ensemble numbers, "Cool Breeze" and "Africana." "Blue Moon" features Gillespie with his swing era idol, Roy Eldridge. But the most striking selection is the Ellington/Tizol standard "Caravan," with Gillespie leading an Afro-Cuban percussion ensemble with the great conguero, Candido.           This CD really surprised me. It's one of the best Dizzy collections out there. Dizzy is in fine form, but the real treat is Dizzy and Roy Eldridge trading solos on 'Blue Moon', which runs for nine glorious minutes. If you don't have this one cut, buy the CD.
