5 out of 5 stars Best CD Ever.......2006-07-18

This cd rocks! American Idiot is very well preformed live! Cuss word in the middle though! All right New York City! Boulevard is an awesome song, and I LOVE the artwork! She's a Rebel-Live is great too! Billie's a little off pitch though. Anyhow, I would reccommend buying this cd used or new. I got mine for about $5.79 (without shipping and handling) factory sealed and I recieved it today. Speedy delivery!

4 out of 5 stars Great cd!.......2006-07-09

I only rated it 4 stars BECAUSE it is somewhat overpriced. Every song is excellent. THEY DON'T HAVE PARENTAL ADVISORY BECAUSE IT IS AN IMPORT. I always wanted to hear She's A Rebel LIVE!

5 out of 5 stars great live.......2006-06-24

I wish this was a full album because I can imagine a real album called Boulavrd Of Broken Dreams.
Great song......

1 out of 5 stars Nasty words included in SONG!!!!!!.......2005-08-30

I purchased this single for my 10 year old daughter because I did not see any disclaimer advising me that the tracks had nasty words in them. I am aware that Green Day does cuss so I when I went on line to order this item I thought I had taken all the necessary precautions to ensure that I did not purchase the nasty version of the songs. Needless to one of the songs uses a word that should NOT be allowed on any music. I hope Amazon will make it easier for parents like me to order music on line that does NOT contain cuss words. I am very disappointed with this purchase.

The theme and music of "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" describes and identifies those of us who follow the road of walking alone in the boulevard of broken dreams.

1 out of 5 stars Bam!! This artist is over!!!!.......2006-08-11

I'm sick of this song!! It's overplayed...Can you people stop loving Green Day so much. They suck.

5 out of 5 stars first of all..........2006-07-28

..the walking alone part in Blvd. of Broken Dreams was when he had a fall out with his wife, or something that made him lonely, that is inside his head, the stuff inside of him, not literally, for goodness sakes, if you guys have an imagination like green day you might have gotten that before I told you. Have you heard their older music, first of course they want the money, because they had pretty much none before, because they were not that popular. Actually the majority (minority=Green Day)just write the songs for the money, they don't, they write it about the life, so if you want some quility music please buy this. If you are not into this stuff please don't buy it, if you are not sure, please be smart and do some reaserch. SHEESH...Green Day are a 1-of-a-kind band.

1 out of 5 stars Originality Counts.......2006-05-24

Any group that is so lacking in imagination that it has to steal as unusual and distinctive a song title as "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" (a 1934 hit song) deserves to be ridiculed, not rewarded with a Grammy.

I'm just full of original ideas. I can't decide whether to write a song called "Wake Me Up Before you Go-Go" or "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer" - or maybe "Do You Know The Way to San Jose"?

5 out of 5 stars This song is sooooo good!!!! .......2006-05-01

For those of you who found this song heavenly inspired, like I did, hahaha, you need to check the green day vs elektrik haze version: "onex & bass-x remix" it's so good, I can't stop listening to it... I want more!!! Unfortunately this version is not available on this CD single, what a shame, but you can download it anywhere, you won't be disappointed...

1 out of 5 stars This sucks so badly..........2006-04-19

Everyone who reviewed this piece o' crap 1 star had the right idea. Now, let me drive the point home further: this song is pathetic. Billy Joe should really quit whining about how he "walks alone". After all, Green Day is on top of the music world right now in spite of being a lame Nirvana retread. So sorry, but you don't walk alone. Maybe if he had the decency to admit he was only in it for the money, I wouldn't be so opposed to this song.
I've heard it said that this song has emotion. That's great...where? I know it's not in the bored way Billy Joe sings his uninspired, typical "Nobody-loves-me-even-though-I'm-also-a-rock-star-and-I-have-fans-on-the-other-end-of-the-world-but-becuase-I'm-a-sellout-I'll-sing-about-being-a-loser" lyrics. You want emotion? Listen to Bell Bottom Blues by Derek & the Dominoes. You can tell that Eric Clapton meant every word he said. With this annoying track, all you can tell is that Green Day is a highly overrated group. If they don't stop playing this song, and fast, I don't know what I'll do.

4 out of 5 stars ...BUT THE FIRST DISC IS ABSOLUTELY MARVELOUS..........2001-11-22

To clarify my rating, I'll break it down by disc:

disc one *****
disc two ***
disc three **

This is actually an average of slightly over 3 stars -- but I don't want to give anyone the impression that there's not some fine music to be found here. As I mentioned above, the first album is excellent. At one time, I owned it as a single disc. It was loaned to someone and not returned for over a year -- assuming I would never see it again, I purchased the box set, since the cds were not available singly at the time.

Disc one -- IT'S THE TALK OF THE TOWN -- shows, I believe, this band at the height of their abilities. Four vocalists (3 women, 1 man) backed by an orchestra approximating the instrumentation and arrangements found in the 1930s and 40s in America and England -- piano, guitar, bass, drums, saxes, trumpet, trombone, plus strings -- playing 'sad songs', lovingly chosen, arranged and performed. There are several standouts on this disc (almost every track) -- the spirit of the age is reproduced splendidly, with the added bonus of modern recording technology, allowing the listener to hear and appreciate every nuance. There are well-known classic songs here -- 'I cover the waterfront', 'I get along without you very well', 'Cottage for sale' -- as well as some that may not be as familiar -- the beautiful 'Clouds', for example. The band sounds like they're having fun with the concept, and the vocalists are never over the top.

Disc two -- LONELY AVENUE -- presents us with some changes. One of the female singers, Marielle Tramp, is replaced by Johanna Spanjerberg. More critically, it seems that the band is already running out of quality material -- perhaps the second album (April 1986) was recorded too soon after the first (June 1985). It could also be the case that all of these songs were part of the band's repertoire throughout this period, and they simply put too many of the 'prime' selections on their first album -- a temptation that's hard to avoid. At any rate, the second disc just doesn't quite measure up to the first.

The real disappointment came for me with disc three -- DANCING WITH TEARS IN MY EYES, recorded 'live' (according to the cover) in July 1987. By the time of this recording, vocalist Frank van Tijn had been replaced by Joop Thonhauser -- and while Joop doesn't have a bad voice, his style is so over the top that, for me, it takes a lot away from the mood of the music. The vocal arrangements in general are overdone on this disc -- particularly embarrassing are the two Cole Porter songs ('Night and day' and 'Love for sale'). The treatment given these two classic pieces of songwriting can only be explained by someone's misconception that the Andrews Sisters or (even worse!) the Manhattan Transfer represent accurate renditions of songs from this period. The subtleties and emotion that Porter wrote into these songs is completely destroyed by the arrangements here. The first time I heard them, I was so upset that my only recourse was to pull out my Ella Fitzgerald versions of these two songs to hear them as they were meant to be performed. Perhaps the fact that the band is from the Netherlands has something to do with it. They're obviously fascinated with this music, and this era -- but in immersing themselves in American culture from a distance, their grasp of this genre is a little slippery. I certainly can't fault them for trying -- but it sound a little like they lost interest (or focus?) toward the end.

The most ironic thing about my whole experience with this box set is that my original single copy of the first album was returned shortly after I purchased the box. Oh well. I donated it to a friend (who, by the way, was instrumental in securing its eventual return), who tells me that he is enjoying it immensely. If you chance to run across IT'S THE TALK OF THE TOWN singly, snatch it up -- it's a great example of songs from the 1920s, 30s and 40s, done up in great style, with great respect.

5 out of 5 stars Boulevard of Broken and unforgetable dreams.......2000-03-21

I Just Love these guys! They truly transport us to the 30's 20's.....the voices; the sound; the mood....i almost can imagine myself in those times...... REALLY GREAT! They shouldn't have stop playing...it's a shame.

5 out of 5 stars Music for a broken hearted evening.......2000-03-02

CD#1 (It's the Talk of the Town) is great- moody renditions of 30's and 40's numbers; even the fast numbers have a melancholy tinge to them. The theme seems to be quiet regret, lost love , and smiles covering heartbreak. All of this is perfectly played with a rich orchestra and tender vocals (Only small complaint- English is definitely not the first language of these singers)

"Detour Ahead" is a fine discovery. Once I heard this 1949 number, with its clever yet poignant lyrics, I wondered why I'd never heard it before.

This is definitely worth repeated listening.

Because I just listened to this CD and I need to be put out of misery. Self-indulgent, whiny and insipid. I'd rather listen to two cats fight over a dead bird than this CD again.

Donna Williams has a way of beautiful way of expressing what's it's like to be autistic in manner that is both personal and universal, with a focus on autism as an experience instead of just a disability. Wonderful and witty as art, I also highly recommend her music for anyone wanting a fuller understanding of autism or for anyone who is autistic who wants to be reminded that they're not alone.

          5 out of 5 stars AWESOME!.......2007-02-23

"Mutations" is every bit as good as Donna's first CD, "Nobody Nowhere". The poetry reading in between some of the songs adds a nice touch. My favorite songs on "Mutations" are "Simply Be", "Suicide Merchant", and "All Be Happy".
