After the dissolution of Return To Forever, Chick Corea embarked on a long period of collaboration with many of the best jazz musicians. At this live concert recorded in Cannes in 1978, Corea is accompanied by the legendary Lionel Hampton. The piano and vibraphone duets are particularly exciting (the blues 'I Ain't Mad At You'), as are Corea's solo pieces ('Fiesta'). Gayle Moran also sings on 'Come Rain Or Come Shine.' This band is one of my favorites because:
The arrangements are innovative; the ensemble playing is superlative, when they record in the studio; Terry Clarke is one great drummer -- his fills and accents will have you falling out of your chair. But... this album has the worst microphone placement and the worst mixing I have ever heard. And, one of the band's weaknesses appears glaringly -- the soloists, particularly the brass soloists, are not a strength of the band. If you want to hear great soloists in a big band context, check out Be Bop Big Band by Carl Saunders. I love Ed Bickert, but somehow the big band does not bring out his strengths as well as the small group format, e.g., with Paul Desmond or Lorne Lofsky. And in this recording, the bass player sounds like he was in the next town, the drum miking is awful, and the band's playing is way weaker than it is when they get into the studio and polish up the playing. These particular arrangements are difficult to execute but not the most inventive, and though Rob pushes, this just wasn't their night IMHO.

This is my first Rob McConnell CD, and it won't be my last. In my opinion, this is one of the best, if not the best Big Band albums I have. McConnell's band, which was recorded in 1980 for this CD, completely blows away newer bands like Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band (Goodwin is awesome, but this CD blew me away). If you are a fan of Jazz and/or Big Band, you can't go wrong here. If you've never listened to Jazz or Big Band, this is also a great CD to start with!

This is an excellent CD. I've been looking everywhere for a copy of T.O. on CD and have had no luck until this CD. The Groovin' High recording is a very good and famous one. I've heard it on the radio a few times and was surprised to find that this is the same one. I'm very excited to have this CD and thoroughly recommend it to any jazz fan, especially a trombone fan - Don't let the valve trombone turn you off. It's great!

    I'm always on the lookout for swinging but relatively unknown piano trios and I found one here in Ken Rhodes: Live at the Reynolds House Museum of American Art. He kicks off the set with a rousing Will You Still Be Mine. He has the chops to turn Bud Powell's Hallucinations on its ear, and his originals are ear catching. The sound quality is excellent, and his supporting cast of bass and drums kicks this CD into high gear. This guy is an original - I cannot pin down any piano giant who he emulates,
    but he plays as well as any of the masters. A sure bet if you like swinging mainstream jazz.

      Hot big band in a great venue. Horns and rhythm really tight. Can't hear other's comment about the band being "conservative" -- solos are agressive and fresh.

        Rob Parton has without a doubt the best musicians in Chicago. The musicians are some of the best guys one could ever meet. They are so approachable and charismatic. They redefine what Jazz is all about to me. A way to communicate with expression about what life means to one through music. When the show is over, they have only the best wishes for this art form and the education of it and the fans of Jazz. The arranging that Thomas Matta does is brilliant and makes some of the tunes they play sound so fresh. If ever in Chicago area, on the third Wednesday of every month they jam out at Fitzgerald's Club in Berwyn. It is always a great experience to hear these guys live, but if you can't their cd swings just as hard. The music is sincerely heartfelt. Thanks for your inspiration guys. Keep on Swingin'

        Parton and is big band blow away the audience at Fitzgeralds durring this live performance. Rob Parton gathered some of the most amazing jazz artists in the Chicago area including Mark Colby, Bob Rummage and Tony Garcia to make this outstanding CD. Partons sound is amazing as he wails, leading the band. This CD is a must if you enjoy a true big band sound and amazing lead trumpeting. Buy it now!!!!!
