Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

If you enjoy the sounds that the mighty Wurlitzer Pipe Organ can produce - you'll enjoy this album. George Wright is probably the best ever at mastering the multiple banks of keys and pedals of this complex instrument, and the music is very relaxing and entertaining. The sounds he coaxes out of the Wurlitzer on "Quiet Village" are remarkable. Easily one of his best - excellent on either a small office stereo, or played on a home theater system.

Some bands are exactly what they say they are. The Brooklyn Funk Essentials are an 11-piece outfit who hail from Brooklyn, have the funk, and, given half a chance, will definitely make you like their music. The opening track has what it takes: dynamic, bustling drum & bass, slick horns, and an uptempo, feel-good vibe. There's a celebratory mix-up of slinky Cuban and gruff Jamaican rhythms called "Mambo Con Dancehall," but the vocal tracks are where the album really kicks off. A couple of members of the Brooklyn Funk Essentials are dub and slam poets, and "Date with My Baby" and "I Got Cash" feature what are quite possibly the best lyrics of 2000. Not only are they very pointed, wickedly funny, and deadly accurate, but they're delivered over slick, boiling-point funk with more cool, suss and style than should be scientifically possible. --Amazon.co.uk

Another album that I purchased because of a song that I heard on tv. I GOT CASH!!!! Everyone who considers themselves real, should listen to this song. I call it the ultimate kiss off to yuppies who think they are better than everyone else.

..."I Got Cash" is [really] hilarious. Lines like "I hope you choke to death on your designer bagel from Balducci's--cholesterol-free, naturally" make this the finest send up the pseudo-lefty bourgeois-cracy since...well, I can't think of anything as good.

Disappointing. After "Cool Steady and Easy" and listening to "Make `em like it" I thought "the king has no clothes." Some good cuts, but doesn't flow like CSE. And trust me, I am NO prude, but I think "I got cash" is not art, it is pornography. Come on guys! You are extremely talented! You can express yourselves more articulately than using "gangsta rap" lyrics.

I was going to blindly order ANYTHING this group did. From now on I will review the sound clips first.

Go buy "Cool Steady and Easy." It is vastly superior.

Captivating.......2002-03-16

This is one of the best, most engaging albums I've heard in a long time. The various styles and genres meld seamlessly here, creating an album that holds your attention without causing you to say, "Oh, look - they're playing a salsa tune now." The two highlights are "I Got Cash" and "Confirm Reservation." The latter is a unique take on (and choice of, for that matter) reggae great Gregory Isaacs' original, while the former is an ironic, venomous and darkly funny (albeit blue-streaked) tongue-lashing at the supposed liberal nouveau riche. But above it all, it'll make ya head bob. It's one of those records that makes you hit play again the moment the record's ended. Well worth buying.

I suppose it depends what you're looking for.

The "inspiration" in these compositions seems to be a mantra-like repetitiveness, with very slow drawn-out development, and serendipitous improvisations coming and going.

So if you're looking for a trance-inducing envelope of sound, with a little tinkering here and there (with nothing too challenging), then this is a nice CD.

If you're looking for engaging cello, go Yo-Yo, Rostapovich, Cassales, just to name a few. If you're looking for excellence in composition or improvisation, go just about anywhere else.

There are no words adequate to describe the experience of listening to this CD, a deeply moving masterpiece of composition, instrumentation and expression, at times soaring to unexpected heights, at others quietly reaching contemplatively into the depths of one's heart and soul bringing great inner peace...it may bring tears to your eyes with its sheer beauty.

ive been listening to david darling since his early days on ecm, own all of his
things, but till now have been allergic to the 'new age' look of, say, his 'cello
blue' and that sort -and couldnt discern WHY hed 'break it up' that way- ecm to
new age- until i listened to the itemd i didnt have. the man can simply do no
wrong. i own pretty much everything (no joke) but invariably when people are
passing thru my apt, house, car, office and hear something from dd, they WANT
it- thats everyone from rockers to classicists.
be sure to check out the magnificent 'epigraphs'(ECM) with pianist ketil bjornstad.

Bland uninteresting music.......2002-12-19

I don't understand the rave reviews for this CD. The music is rather bland and insipid. I had just finished listening to the Beethoven late quartets before I previewed the Darling, so this CD simply paled in comparison. I suppose it would be okay as background music, but it is not a CD one would want to spend time listening to.

This cd should be selling off the shelves at a rapid pace. This is actually a reissue that was previously on HEARTS OF SPACE label. Music that will touch your soul and change your way of listening immediately. The key tracks are: #2, #3, #4, #9. Be sure to spread the word... David Darling is an amazing artist and hope that more of his work becomes famous...

Long before Jeff Healey burst onto the '80s blues-rock scene with an unorthodox lap-steel-like approach to conventional guitar and a flair for radio-friendly pop songs like "See the Light" and "Angel Eyes," he had a deep jones for 1920s and '30s jazz. His first major release in that vein, a live recording with his eight-piece Wizards and British jazz revivalist/trombonist Chris Barber as his guest, takes Louis Armstrong's historic Hot Five recordings and Django Reinhardt and the Hot Club band as its swinging twin axis of influences. Sure, the results aren't groundbreaking, yet they're authentic and fun, thanks to spirited performances and a selection of mostly playful uptempo chestnuts, including "Sing You Sinners," Georgia Tom Dorsey's suggestive title track, and Bessie Smith's "Keep It to Yourself." Barber's trombone solos are hale and raucous, but Healey's his own ringer, fretting elegant, classic guitar lines and pulling boisterous double duty on ebulliently squawking trumpet. --Ted Drozdowski

I picked this up because it was listed as Jazz and really didn't put two and two together on Jeff. Personally I did not like his previous albums but love this one.

You can tell that this is his passion and I hope that he does more. I will buy them.

If you like good traditional 20's - 30's jazz, you will like this album.

I liked the trombone player, I am one myself, and it is hard to find one that is good. This is the music for a trombone player and lover.

I have been a fan of Jeff Healey since the 80's. I am pleased that his "new" venture into Jazz and Blues finally got an album available in the US. Jeff is great on the trumpet, his guitar (as always) is fantastic, and his vocals are enjoyable. While I am not a fan of the trombone the fiddler with the Jazz Wizards was a surprise and is a lot of fun. If you are a Jeff Healey fan and like Jazz and Blues I would recommend adding this to your collection.

My friend turned me on to Rebirth a few months ago and I couldn't be happier for that recommendation. Just saw them for the second time last week in NYC and they are ridiculous live. This album is a great intro to their sound even though it's almost 20 years old.

Phenomenal New Orleans Jazz.......2000-12-13

I first heard of Rebirth Brass Band while at the 2000 Essence Festival in New Orleans and was instantly hooked! The next best thing to seeing this group live is to purchase their cds. I promise you won't be disappointed. At the festival, the entire room was on their feet--they heated the room us so much that shoes and jackets came off, and people packed away the facades so they can let their hair down and have a great Rebirth-inspired time. I was so impressed with the group that as soon as I got home, I snapped up every cd I could find. If you want to experience jazz that will have you snapping your fingars, bobbing your head and on your feet to have a funky good time, then I truly recommend Rebirth without reservations.

Great New Orleans Brass Band!.......2000-09-23

The Rebirth Brass Band is by far the best that I have heard in a very long time. The tuba playing is fantastic and energitc with creative bass lines that really support the ensemble.

Forget the recent rash of singer's singing the "CLASSICS' or the "AMERICAN SONGBOOK", they are mostly bad. But, Merv Griffin's IT'S LIKE A DREAM cd is the real deal. Unlike these modern day singers who have no idea what the material is, you can tell Merv Griffin knows the songs and sings them perfectly. It's almost like an authentic 40's album, being released today. Some great songs on it are, THE MORE I SEE YOU, SONG FOR YOU, and especially, A NIGHTINGALE SANG IN BERKELEY SQUARE. So forget the new "SONGBOOK" cd's and get yourself the real deal.

I have had the pleasure of getting to know who Merv Griffin is, and he is to me, simply out of this world. His sounds are fantastic and will last forever. I met Griff at his Coconut Club, Supper Club at the Beverly Hilton, and singing I've Got A Lovely Bunch of Coconuts will stick in my head forever. This album is a tribute to excellance and his dreams. If you want to enjoy smooth sounds of the good old big bands, get this CD, its beautiful. I can't sum up Griff better, then saying the album, Is Like A Dream! Thanks ol' pal.

Merv Griffin YOU are like a dream!.......2001-06-08

This new CD by the legendary host-with-the-most, Merv Griffin, is simply wonderful. This collection of down-tempo songs all have warm piano and lush strings behind them (the production and musical direction by Mort Lindsay is superb). And Merv's voice is smooth and rich as fine chocolate. You can sometimes catch this mogual performing at his own nightclub, "The Coconut Club" inside his Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills. He appears with the entertainer, Michael Andrew and The Coconut Club Orchestra, to a bevy of old and new Hollywood celebs. He showcased some of these songs on 'Larry King Live' and even had Larry crooning along! I think it is pretty cool for a gent in his 7th decade to be on the charts once again - singing some of his favorite tunes. Considering Merv was not planning to make a new album - it's truly a special collector's item... and a great disc for the phonograph. It's like a dream, indeed! Go for it - add it to your shopping basket now!

Just Like the Merv of the 1950s.......2001-05-15

Listening to Merv sing on his new album, "It's Like a Dream" is like going back to the l950s and listening to Merv sing just after he left Freddy Martin and went out on his own. Not only is it great to hear Merv again, but the magic of the romantic ballad is recaptured in this new release. Especially reminiscent of the old ballads are The More I See You and A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square. I had almost forgotten what good music is.

Still singing after all these years........2001-03-26

Though generally regarded as a celebrity who happens to sing, Merv Griffin began his show-biz life as an RCA recording artist, both as featured vocalist with the Freddy Martin Orchestra and as a solo singer. In both capacities, he scored a number of chart successes, including "I've Got a Lovely Bunch of Coconuts," "Never Been Kissed," and, long before Donny and Marie made it their own, "Morningside of the Mountain." Though Griffin's chart success was short-lived, he never stopped singing and recording, and now we have him on a brand-new CD featuring brand-new performances.

And these are very pleasant performances, with flawless studio musicianship and note-perfect arrangements by Griffin's long-time musical director, Mort Lindsey. Some would call this sort of music bland, but I have a feeling that was the intention. Griffin's voice has worn well, with a roughness nicely offset by unusually good vocal control for a singer in his mid-seventies. The material consists of standards like "My Funny Valentine," more recent fare ("A Song for You"), and a couple of originals by Griffin ("It's Like a Dream") and Pat Boone ("Sweet Lips"). This is one CD that not everyone else on the block is going to own.
