Monsoon Wedding is Mychael Danna's second collaboration with film director Mira Nair, (Kama Sutra was the first), and he has again compiled a winning soundtrack. Danna explores a wide range of emotions, from solemn to celebratory, through different generations of Indian culture. The contemplative "Good Indian Girls" and "Hold Me, I'm Falling" feature Danna's trademark piano ambience over traditional Indian instrumentation, and the vivacious "Baraat" sounds like a Punjabi variation on Dixieland, while "Delhi.com" ventures into dreamy ethno-techno territory. Sukhwinder Singh's "Today My Heart Desires" serves up lively bhangra rock, and Laxmikant Pyarelal's "Today the Weather Plays Tricks on Me" (performed by Mohammed Rafi) swoons with strings and male vocals. In all, the soundtrack's pleasing variety of Eastern music mirrors the film's old and new worlds living within a singular culture. --Bryan Reesman

5 out of 5 stars Monsoon Wedding Soundtrack is Terrific.......2007-05-18

I really enjoyed the movie and was pleased to find the soundtrack. Great cd if you're a fan of Bollywood!

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!.......2007-03-24

I just saw the movie MONSOON WEDDING and I absolutely loved it! Of course, I just HAD to have the soundtrack, so I bought the Cd recently and loved it too! WOW!

The Cd will leave you in a happy mood... Wonderful up-beat songs, many are so danceable and hipnotic. I've been playing this Cd all week ...I just wish it were longer because I would love to have more Cds like this in my Cd collection.

5 out of 5 stars Just as fabulous as the movie!.......2007-01-31

This is an excellent soundtrack from an excellent movie. The music is fantastic - makes you want get up and move your feet! It's got such a happy, wistful, exotic flavor throughout the CD. I think this will probably be one that I wear out from listening to it so much!

5 out of 5 stars Love It, Love It, Love It.......2007-01-21

I just love this CD. I'm preferential to the work of Mychael Danna and this is another awesome work of his. There is everything from old Indian love ballads to the popular Bollywood music of today, with some very beautiful instrumentals in between.

I'd recommend seeing the movie too. As well, I'd check out Danna's music for another Mira Nair movie, "Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love."

4 out of 5 stars Culture-Happy-Dance-Reflect-Appreciate-Savor-Relax-Laugh.......2006-11-06

Above I listed some words that first came to mind when I thought about this cd.
It is very Culture rich and soaked in Indian flavor. It's colorful and makes you happy with a laugh or two; as it seeks to portray the traditional music typical of a Punjabi wedding in Delhi, India.
You want to dance with most songs and sit quietly to reflect with others. I listed appreciate because we often don't sit back to appreciate the richness that other cultures provide. My 2 year old appreciates this music in her broken wanna be Hindi mimic.
She dances as does my 6 year old to this music. It's really a great CD but I would recommend seeing the movie first.

5 out of 5 stars There's lots of melody within these clicks........2007-06-20

Allien, usually known for mixing up her mix cd's with some unique or sneaky twist in the musical style, goes straightforward this time with a sumptuous feast of techno. She takes a few dips in tempo here and there, but it's mostly a fast paced listen, with lots of great melodies in her track selections, and two very good vocal tracks.

She mixed this on vinyl, and the only real flaw, as another reviewer pointed out, is the rough transition between tracks 7 and 8. One very minor issue on an otherwise perfect minimal and techno set. Joins Adam Beyer's Fabric 22, Ivan Smagghe's Fabric 23, and Matthew Dear's Fabric 27 as top, 5-star techno entries in the Fabric series.

4 out of 5 stars The feminine touch: Softly, softly..........2007-06-12

Fabric now has an extensive library of quality releases, and the 34th release, "manned" by the lovely Ellen Allien, certainly does not break this tradition. As one might expect, Fabric 34 is an album comprised primarily of cutting-edge minimal-tech house music, and at times I get the feeling I'm listening to a heavier, more avant-garde Fabric 29 (Tiefschwarz). Allien makes your mind work to appreciate her deft mixing skills and superb track selection, so if you're of the school of thought that aural pleasure should be spoon-fed, this album is simply not for you!

From the onset, sounds bounce erratically all about the musical landscape like rocks skipping across the surface of water; Allien's track selection captured my attention immediately because of this paradoxically inconsistent-consistent soundscape. The sound solidifies with "The Sun Can't Compare," driven by enjoyable male vocals alongside a simplistic yet frenetically tech-house background. As I have mentioned, I enjoy this album so much because of its duality and the paradoxes it presents our minds with, almost like aural puzzles. Ellen has mixed these sounds such that they simply work so well, and after looking at the track titles, I will say that the title "Orderly Kaos" pretty much sums up her style of mixing on this disc. The album starts to get really grinding and tech-house on "Tu Y Yo (Pilas Remix)," and "Sound Stealer," with brief excursions towards the levels of extreme minimalism. Up and down, left and right, side-to-side, this album moves and provokes the listener, prodding the ears in all the right places at precisely the right moments. I honestly believe she will continue this incredible ability at manipulating sound during her upcoming tours.

The only part I can say that I do not like is the mixing between "It Is Now Either" and "India In Me 2?" because it sounds choppy and overtly obvious that two tracks are being mixed into one. After about three minutes, "India In Me 2" finally evens itself out and is quite an enjoyable track - but for those first three minutes, too much is happening at once. Aside from this, there isn't really another sore spot on the album to point out - which is more than can be said for several prior Fabric and Fabriclive releases! Moving on - Thom Yorke's "Harrowdown Hill" eases the relentlessness of Ellen's visionary movement; it is a fantastic chill-out track, very sporadic regarding the beats and (again) utilizing non-intrusive male-vocals to keep the pace constant instead. The mild guitar riffs at the end are killer and close the track well. Consequently, this track mixes into one of Ellen's own productions, "Just A Woman." `Modesty,' anyone? Though she is indeed a woman, Ellen's haunting minimal track is simply perfect to follow Thom Yorke's, all-the-while segueing nicely into a cymbal-driven "Journey," by Ben Klock. Trust me, by this point, your brain waves are definitely out-of-whack, and this is not a bad thing. But "Baby Kate (Plastikman Remix)" drives a techy arrow straight through the heart of the last track, "Arcadia," whose ambient atmosphere is the perfect serum for returning your mind to equilibrium. And thus, we see, Ellen Allien is most obviously more than `just a woman.'

Organized Chaos. Intrigue. Avant-garde. Progressive. These are terms that I have decided adequately describe the personality of the 34th Fabric recording. Ellen Allien spins a musical journey that, for fans of the previous Fabric releases - especially twenty through thirty-three - will no doubt enthuse. Though "just a woman," Allien displays the sort of confidence and deck agility that the EDM community rarely sees from a female artist. In her own words, "It's the unknown that attracts my attention, and I want to know it! The mix... The mix is everything. I push myself to the absolute limit, sweating, and the thrill is that the room will become our room."

5 out of 5 stars Upper percentile of (pigeon hole coming) Chill Genre.......2006-11-11

This guy does not have the industry, spin, and following of genre masters like thievery company, but this is every bit as good. However you characterize this music it is in the top 5% the genre. If you like Zero 7, thievery company, air supply, or radiohead, then you will like this. Other reviewers have done a good job of describing the technical quality...I couldn't do that anyway. The used price reflects the current market value of the music.

5 out of 5 stars Great chilled groove CD.......2003-03-19

This CD is great for a myriad of occasions - it's the perfect type of background music, but can be in the "spotlight", too. It's ambient in the way that while you're listening, you feel like you should be watching a really cool movie - perfect soundtrack music. But it's also "groove" because you can't help but want to move your body to the beat at many occasions when listening.

I have listened to this CD many, many times and honestly am NOT at all tired of it. It's a true "classic" for me because it never gets old - I continue to discover more interesting elements every time I hear it. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Full of images and smooth, solid grooves.......2002-11-20

Uplift Drift, is a cinematic journey that "Lifts you up and takes you higher" Full of images and smooth, solid grooves that transport the listener to a place where you have the freedom to lean back and float or get up and move to the ambient groove.

This CD is very good in the audio sense also... Clean tight mixes, an obvious amount of work went into the recordings presented here. Terms like "attention to detail" come to mind. It seems a lot of attention was also paid to the psyco-acoustic realm, where sound images drift in, out and past the listener during their journey. Check this one out on headphones !!

The orchestration and rhythms are top notch and totally original. I think Magic Sound Fabric has carved out a signature sound here. Working in a genre where there is precious little "Dub" oriented music that smoothly blends elements of Ambient, Reggae, Experimental Electronic and good old Space Music, I would think this CD is poised for major exposure and acceptance in an otherwise cluttered music industry.

The CD features full art work and professional packaging unlike many indie artists. The label, Spiralight, has really pulled out all the stops in quality indie music distribution. I hope to see it grow as well.

All in all, Uplift Drift is a valued addition to any CD collection regardless of musical taste, but especially to those of us who enjoy good electronic music!

5 out of 5 stars An incredible, dub style breaks entry in the Fabriclive series........2007-05-15

Not since the Plump DJ's Fabriclive 8, way back in early '03 has there been as an exciting breakbeat mix for the Fabriclive series. The Meat Katie and Freestylers mixes were decent, and more recently, Evil Nine and the Stanton Warriors, which I felt both missed the mark. Up pops Tayo, master of Dubstyle breaks and Baile Funk, with an exciting 27 track mix that's easily my pick for the most energetic CD to pump up loud this summer. Tayo crosses from your normal breaks, to grime, and over to dub, but the main theme always constant is his choice of the heaviest hitting, high impact breaks. The flow is sensational, and this mix can literally be just kept on repeat throughout your day, without it ever losing it's edge or energy level. Slick rap lyrics and hard hitting, reggae tinged breaks make up 27 fast and furious tracks at a never a dull moment pace, making this one of the best Fabrics ever, and not just in the breaks category.

A phenomenal ride by one of the most exciting DJ's in the UK.

That is all. great tracks on here, the best mix from the Stanton's so far

    2 out of 5 stars snore.......2007-05-30

what happened to the stantons? the cash man came knocking? i think they got a taste of American club culture in put that into their mix. perhaps that makes things fresh and interesting in Europe. i find this mix tired and predictable. there are some solid tracks on here, and if you are the type who is easily pleased and you just want a nice mix for a house party then fine. but if you are a breakbeat conniseur (?) then go elsewhere. hopefully the Plumps will keep things real. this was a total letdown.

    2 out of 5 stars Letdown... totally.......2007-02-24

I have the first Stanton Sessions and that cd is one of my favorites for sure. What happened with this one? Way too much cheesy hip hop lyrics mixed over the beats. The beats aren't that good either. Not much variety, if you heard every other break mix cd out there, you heard this. I gave it a two for a couple tracks that are ok. They don't justify the purchase of this. Well, I guess theres nothing to do but suck it up, and toss it in the "I listened to it once, but forgot about it" pile.

4 out of 5 stars you'll catch your body moving to the groove before too long.......2007-02-21

[...]"The Stanton Warriors turn out a decent batch of dance tracks on their contribution to the Fabric Live series. With a dash of electro ( Kerri Chandler's "Planet Sonic") and gobs of sexy hip-hop, thick but not too dense mixing, high energy beats (Peace Division's house track `Club Therapy') and enveloping textures, "Fabric Live 30" is an awfully good mix of tracks, even if it falls short of greatness. It certainly sets itself up above the level of many of its peers, tossing in more variety than you'd expect from your run of the mill, impulse buy in the techno bin house CD. Even if it doesn't immediately grab you, you'll catch your body moving to the groove before too long. It's a fairly strong set, though its groove pulses in the back of your mind and isn't as in the foreground of your consciousness as a really great dance CD would be. However, they can't all be home runs. The Stanton Warriors have shown they know how to manipulate the turntables and make music that can keep a dance floor busy."

    4 out of 5 stars Tasty.......2007-02-18

This is a pretty high energy set, rockin some edgy breakbeats throughout. There are a few bad apples among the track selection, but as a whole the mix stays right in the groove. Some of the mixing is a little abrupt, but with the tracks on this album it works well. As for the overall feel of the set, the first half is more of an electronic feel, while the latter half provides a gritty urban sound. I would definitely recommend picking up this album, it sounds fresh and is a great way to start off the beginning of a long night

    Album Description

Diplo, the producer behind M.I.A., along with Fabric Records present FabricLive 24.

Raised across the southern states, fed on Miami Bass and DIY DJ party culture, Diplo began DJ-ing in his late teens and started to produce his own tracks after moving north to Philly and New York. While living in Japan he submitted his demo to Ninja Tunes' Hip Hop offshoot Big Dada; swiftly signed he put out the deep, diverse and funky Florida album. He's remixed for artists including Beck, Gwen Stefani, Bun B, and Le Tigre. Diplo pushes the envelope of new sounds and rhythm that constantly absorbs and amazes listeners of his mix tapes and Hollartonix parties.

FabricLive 24 is a fast paced, funk fuelled ride through the badlands of Hip Hop, dub step, electro, rock and techno - featuring tracks from Outkast, Plantlife, Aphex Twin, Ludacris, M.I.A., The Cure, Diplo, Le Tigre, Cybotron, Cajmere, and many more.

2 out of 5 stars The FabricLive Series Disappoints Again.......2007-07-07

Although Fabriclive and Fabric albums are obviously suppose to differ in regards to being truely live recorded sets versus pure studio sets(that may or may not have be modelled after a set that the featured artist or DJ actually played at the fantastic London-based club), there sure is an overwhelming difference in quality between the two major series overall. Sure, Fabriclive is live, and therefore will sound a little more raw, but that is not the issue with the majority of Fabriclive's albums. The artists, DJs, and more importantly their sets are terrible! Diblo is no exception. I may have electronica genre preferences which guides (with some bias) my music collection, I do still try to sample a little from each genre and subgenre whenever possible.

I had a hard time listening to this ablum in its entirity. Various types of a particular food kept popping into my head. Provolone, Mozarella, Feta...you get the point.

    2/5 stars for this album.

5 out of 5 stars The Work of an Innovator.......2006-10-04

Say what you like about Diplo, but the simple fact is that very few, if any, have the vision and courage that is displayed on this mix and just about anything else baring the Diplo name.
With a mixture of old (Debbie Deb, Model 500, Freestyle), new (M.I.A, Outkast, Ludacris), exotic (baile funk) and downright strange (Aphex Twin, DJ Nasty), Diplo delivers a set of quality mixing and innovative track selection.
To those of little musical bravery - stay clear of the great Diplo in general and definately this mix,as you will find everything from 80's breakbeat to 00's hip hop rubbing shoulders with the rockier sounds of The Cure and Le Tigre. If however, you are open to musical experimentation, then this mix will surely install in your brain the feelings of euphoria it did in this humble reviewier's cranium.

Turn it on and take a journey into the wonderful world of Diplo.

5 out of 5 stars Best of old and new.......2006-03-22

I have to give Diplo props for putting together such an ecclectic mix that delivers on all levels. All the old school party jams from the eighties infused with current hip hop and latin flavors shows how diverse his musical tastes are. I particular enjoyed hearing Le Tigre being mixed in with old school techno and house grooves. If you want a fresh musical experience that is guaranteed to get the party going pick this up.

5 out of 5 stars BUY THIS MIX!.......2006-03-14

Diplo, the mastermind DJ/producer behind M.I.A.'s legendary "Arular," has compiled one of the phattest party mixes I have heard in recent years. He starts out with some classic, hand-picked 80s techno tracks, including Yaz, Debbie Deb, and Cybotron. Midway through the madness, you can't help but throw your hands in the air and shake your ass to Solid Groove's "This is Sick." Diplo then takes a sharp turn into the realm of South London grime, continuing on to some underground Brazilian tech-hop. The beats get more aggressive through this later section of the mix. Towards the end, he shows his true genius as a party DJ by throwing everything you wouldn't expect into the mix--The Cure, Le Tigre, and ending up with CAT POWER??? This IS sick!

    4 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-01-28

Diplo is the man behind the decks with M.I.A. He is also her main collaborator. There fore he is the hottest new DJ in quite a while. He hooked up with Ninja Tune two years ago. He did a few remixes and ended up working on the mixtape that put M.I.A. on the map. Of course he was a DJ at Fabric soon after that. This mixes old and new tracks. A little funky ass with old electro. Cybotron, Model 500, and even Yazoo are some of the best of that era of Electro. He even throws in some of his own tracks with M.I.A. "Bucky Done Gun" and Aphex Twin, and also The Cure. Ludacris and Outkast represent Hiphop. Le Tigre makes pretty lame albums but some of their remixes are tolerable. There is even a track by Cat Power on here. I am very unsurprised by these sort of collections. But this one and Annie DJ Kicks are great collections.

5 out of 5 stars Medely of Dark Minimal Tech-House that doesnt get boring.......2007-04-19

Imagine Richie Hawtin meets John Digweed @ a Electronic Symphony and they decide to orchestrate! You would get Tiefschwarzes Fabric 29. This CD combines some of the best minimal tech-house tunes out there in flowing manner. Unlike most Minimal Techno that I have heard, I do not get bored with the Songs or the CD in general.

The CD starts out hard and bumping with a aggressive semi-industrial tune and quickly switches to more melodic and harmonic tunes building back up to a combination of bouncy tracks and Mid-based Tunes.

I can strongly recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys the dark side of house and yet is bored with techno and minimal alone.

    5 out of 5 stars This rocks!.......2006-10-31

The best Fabric CD since the Craig Richards (#1) and Terry Francis (#2) mixes. I thought I'd died and gone to heaven after hearing Freefall!!!

    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, mind-bending music.......2006-10-07

This latest installment of the Fabric series marks not only what I consider the finest disc in the series to date, but also the finest mix I have heard by Tiefschwarz.
From start to finish every track only serves to add to the beautiful, strange journey through hypnotic techno and electro provided by the Schwarz brothers.
I cannot recommend this cd highly enough to fans of quality electronic music. A masterpiece of the dj mix genre.

5 out of 5 stars A relentless tech mix that starts off with a bang........2006-08-30

This mix starts off heavy, and never lets up, with the quirky, yet hard hitting vocal track Grace (Anxiety) by Troy Pierce (as Louderbach) starting things off in a very energetic way. This track worked well in Sascha Funke's Boogy Bytes 2 mix, but it was deep into the mix. I feel it's even more effective starting a mix off. Things quickly lighten up with the bloopy Claude VonStroke next, and then it's into the M.A.N.D.Y. remix of Tiefschwarz's excellent track Damage, featuring Tracey Thorn of Everything But The Girl on vocals.

Two solid tech house tracks follow, especially Touane's snappy track Bassic, and it's right into the gritty, churning, techno sound of Thomas Schumacher's incredible track Rotor. The mix then hits a very slight snag in track 7, which I feel is one of only two so-so parts of the mix. It's not bad, it's just a little too light and bubbly tech house for my liking. It's quickly forgotten as the mix races through with 4 solid tracks in a row, and right after the melodic Freefall, it's into Tiefschwarz's own remix of a Depeche Mode track. This is the only other slight miss in the mix for me, as I feel the track was a tad too long at nearly 7 minutes, and could have been trimmed to better fit the flow of the mix. Another solid melodic track is next, and we end with the dubbed out vocals of Kate Wax.

Overall, it's an exciting tech house mix that's a full lineup of solid tracks, with not a bad one in sight, and very few dips in the scorching pace of one, very sound, top to bottom mix. Do not miss picking this one up, as it's easily in the top 5 techno/tech house mixes this year.

    Album Description

Meat Katie, AKA Mark Pember, is a ceaseless devotee of "music for music's sake." Recognized by many as one of the finest breakbeat producers currently on the scene, Meat Katie has grabbed the attention of music fans in the last few years through his production and remixes for Island UK, Kingsize, Marine Parade, Bedrock and his own label Whole 9 Yards.

On FabricLive 21, Meat Katie provides a full throttle eclectic late night dance floor mash up. Lee Coombs vocal led "Banned Practice" sets the pace as Mark weaves through the throbbing beats of Albino Allstars, attention grabbing vocals from UNKLE over Infusion's enthralling "Better World." Real ear-openers include Jem Stone & JC's "Disco Daze," Meat Katie's own grinding remix of "Salty," Vandal's unreleased track "Mad as Hell," and future breakbeat heroes Atomic Hooligan's evocative "Shine a Light" keeps the listener gripped to the very last note.

Meat Katie is a great breaks DJ. I could give it 5 stars but nothing is perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent breaks mix.......2006-08-19

I got this when it was released because I had just heard Lee Coombs spin "Mad As Hell" at a live show. Any cut that features Peter Finch's classic monologue from "Network" is worth the price of admission.

There are a lot of other great cuts on this CD though. The ones that stand out for me are

Banned Practice- Very 80's retro. I'm not sure who the vocal sample is from. My first guess would be Peter Murphy of Bauhaus fame, but it might be Jim Kerr of Simple Minds. Regardless, it sticks in my head until I put this CD in and play it in its entirety.

Mismoplastico- This cut sounds like it belongs on a Deep Dish compilation, except it has a breakbeat. Very nice.

Shadow Box- Great bass hook and floor tom sound. Love it.

Salty (Meat Katie Remix)- Great remix of this classic.

Mad As Hell- The reason I bought the CD in the first place. This is a perfect example of the sample carrying the song. The main groove is good, but the build section with the sample kicks. Imagine a room full of people screaming "I'm mad as hell, and I'm not gonna take it anymore!" Ironically, the effect the words had in the movie have a similar effect on the dance floor.

All in all a great CD.

    5 out of 5 stars Slick!.......2006-01-08

Love this CD. One of the top ten in my collection. Funky, smooth breaks, driving beats, new fresh grooves. This will keep you rollin all night. If you like this CD, also try, Deep Dish Yoshiesque, or Lee Coombs Breakfast of Champions.

5 out of 5 stars I'm As Mad AS Hell And I'm not going to take it Anymore.......2005-06-20

Seriously I had just written a massive review for this CD and it was just eaten by cyber space aaahhhh! So to quote the vocal from Vandal's Mad As Hell (my favourite track on this mix) I'm as mad as hell!!!!

This mix is an absolute corker and my best buy for the year so far I have been giving it a caning and a couple of my mates that heard it went out and bought it too.

So to keep it brief standout tracks are 1 (great electro style vocal), 3, MK's rework of Better World with the Reign acapella is inspired stuff and comes off very well. Tracks 9(get ready to Testify!) and 11 are also great, I really like MK's remix of Salty much more grunt and dirt to it with a Male vocal than the original. Then followed by Vandal's Mad As Hell this track should be huge and will undoubtedly get a thrashing from other DJs at a club near you soon. I just can't help but get pumped byt the breakdown in this track.
Finally shine a light brings a fantastic mix to a fitting conclusion its structured more a song than a dance track but it works well and gives an insight to Atomic Hooligan who if you haven't heard some of their other stuff that will undoubtedly change soon with their new release out now.

This is a diverse mix of a variety of styles broken whipped and twisted into a dancefloor inspired cranking release.

Big Up's Mr Pemeber you have excelled yet again!!!

    5 out of 5 stars 5 out of 5 !!!.......2005-05-23

For those people who appreciate Break beat this album is a must have!!!! The fines break beat album since "Eargasm" (Plump DJs) and "Stanton Sessions" (Stanton Warriors).

This album is my personal favourite alongside FabricLive 08 (Plump DJs) from the whole Fabric and FabricLive series! People who like d'n'b might also find it interesting.
