We love this C.D.!.......2005-04-03
We received the Baby Cello C.D. as a gift, and my husband and I just love it. The music is truly moving in the most uplifting way, and the songs chosen are just beautiful; not at all stuffy. The true test was when our two-year-old, who had not had a nap all day, got completely wired and still would not go to sleep after 10 p.m. She screamed for 20 minutes as we tried to get her down, until I put Baby Cello on, and the screaming stopped instantaneously! She went to sleep to the C.D. without another wimper! We highly recommend Baby Cello for parents and babies alike, and have bought it for other parents with babies that we know. It uplifts, as well as soothes, depending upon what time of day we put it on, and it serves as wonderful dinner music as well. We can't imagine anyone not loving this C.D.! A.and J. Pieri, Albany,CA
Glorious sound.......2005-01-23
I am so pleased with Baby Cello. The sound of this music is utterly glorious. Soothing doesn't begin to describe it. My 2 year old and I love listening to it at all times of day.

Customer Reviews:
Not bad, but not great.......2007-04-10
The 25 tracks on this CD have exactly one thing that binds them together: all the songs were written (both words and music) by Cole Porter. Some of the singers doing the songs were very well-known artists, others were obscure ones I never heard of. Most of the songs have become standards, but a couple are quite obscure. Most of the recordings were made in the 1950s, but not quite all of them. Most are taken from albums, but at least one is shown as "previously unreleased" on the liner notes. And the styles range from quite jazzy to almost operatic. So this is a very mixed bag.
It should be noted that some of the artists (such as Tony Bennett and Dinah Shore) are represented with recordings made after their primes, as they are best known in work for other record companies, and only recordings for Capitol (or other companies that Capitol took over) are included.
But although there is a variation in all these factors, most, perhaps all, sounded decent to me. Not great, but certainly good.
Disappointed.......2006-11-05
After seeing the motion picture "De-Lovely" and reading several Cole Porter bio's, I eagerly anticipated listening to "Capitol Sings Cole Porter: Anything Goes". Although the Capitol CD contains many more selections by competent, well known artists, I much prefer listening to the CD from the soundtrack of the movie. The "Capitol Sings..." arrangements are slick, but to my ear the De-Lovely arrangements are more wonderfully crafted and have a much more sensuous, emotional quality, even when sung by non-singers Kevin Kline and Ashley Judd. Diana Krall's interpretation of "Begin the Beguine", along with the gorgeous minor key accompaniment, is worth the ownership of the CD alone. I find it to be nothing less than thrilling, no matter how often one listens. I gave my "Capitol Sings..." CD away.
A disappointing "Greatest".......2006-03-20
This sterling line-up of songs by the witty tunesmith Cole Porter, as interpreted by some of the 20th-century's greatest singer/performers - Tony Bennett, Peggy Lee, Judy Garland, Nat King Cole, etc. - is surprisingly dull. Very little information accompanies the CD, and I suspect many of the numbers were recorded in mono, which might account for the weak stereo sound "enhanced" by digital technology.
Or maybe Capital was forcing the singers to complete contracts. I found the recently released soundtrack for Delovely, a bad bio-pic about Porter, far more enjoyable and it features a cast of some of the best singers of the early 21st century.
PORTER DONE RIGHT.......2005-08-17
THIS CD IS EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED, COLE PORTER SUPERBLY TREATED BY VARIOUS ARTISTS.
~"You're The Top" Cole Porter~Awesome Selections!!!~.......2004-08-30
Romantic, rhythmic, sophisicated and incredibly brilliant are the classic works of 20th Century legendary composer Cole Porter who is represented here by an impressive array of Capitol recordings artists. The smooth sophisicated swing of "All Of You" kick off a program of greatly diverse and fascinating performances and always true to her legendary fashion is a superb Peggy Lee while Tony Bennett does a stunning "Anything Goes" with Count Basie. "I Happen To Like New York" smolders and soars with the haunting intensity of a soulful Judy Garland vocal that is a truly stunning masterpiece!!! A mesmerizing Nancy Wilson vocal make "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To" a memorable listening experience and this collection is a keeper for those who love the finest songs and singers that music has to offer. Thanks to Cole Porter and all those great Capitol Recording Artists for making this great collection possible...highly recommended!!!!!!!

Listeners in the thrall of the great Cole Porter's lyrical sense and legendary melodic finesse probably don't need to be prompted to pick up an album featuring new piano-trio interpretations of 14 of the master's gems. The good news though, is that Nashville pianist Beegie Adair's Dream Dancing: The Songs of Cole Porter holds up as a first-rate piano-trio record on more than just the strength of Porter's melodies (this is equally the case on her Nat "King" Cole Collection, Frank Sinatra Collection, and even her Love, Elvis set of the King's ballads). An elder stateswoman of the Nashville music scene who's backed her share of country and pop performers over the years, Adair displays a formidable technique and a sensitive soloing style that may surprise even seasoned piano fans. She's helped by her regular rhythm team of bassist Roger Spencer and drummer Chris Brown, both of whom play behind Adair as if they anticipate her every dynamic shift and nuance before it happens. They bring life to everything from the bluesy groove of "I Love Paris" to the gentle swing of "What Is This Thing Called Love." Dream Dancing shows Adair putting her technique in the service of these great songs rather than running all over them--so much so that even her interpolation of John Coltrane's "Giant Steps" during Porter's "You're the Top" seems only to enhance that classic melody. --Ezra Gale
Customer Reviews:
Not Just "Dinner Music".......2007-01-05
Flawlessly executed renditions of well known standards. Here, as elsewhere, BA sports Oscar Peterson-like technique and sensibilities sans the 128th-note riffs. While hard-core jazz enthusiasts may find her work a bit "straight" or predictable, BA is clearly a first-rate pianist.
Dream Dancing: Songs of Cole Porter by Beegie Adair.......2006-11-07
Received in excellent shape. Very satisfied with transaction.
Surprising Disappointment.......2006-10-18
Being both a Beegie Adair and a Cole Porter fan I was eagerly anticipating the arrival of this CD, but would have to say it is, to my taste, the weakest of her works. I've tried to think why, and believe it is a conflict between a great instrumentalist and a great lyricist, indeed poet. Porter's genius was in his poetry, set to catchy tunes.
In this CD, Beegie seems to run rampant with the music to the point that one can't follow the lyrics, either in your head or aloud. It seems a bit egotistical to me to do so, and I would compare this CD with her wonderful "I'll Take Romance,: where Beegie seems to worship the songs she plays. In "Dream Dancing," it's more of a battle.
The final track "Begin the Beguine" is just painful, a slow funeral dirge of a song that can be a great self proclamation.
Not recommended.
Definitely among the short list of great jazz pianists.......2006-07-18
Reading through some other comments, I'd like to throw in my own three cents. Beegie Adair should indeed be considered among the short list of great jazz pianists. Her recordings are one thing. Here LIVE PERFORMANCES are quite another.
On Deam Dancing, Beegie Adair and her trio present the great songs of Cole Porter in a, yes, "romantic" and "easy on the ears" format. Intentionally created for dinners, candlelight moments, and those oh-so-grand times of canoodling with your heartmate.
This in no way dismisses her from inclusion among Bill Evans, George Shearing, Erroll Garner, Oscar Peterson, Tommy Flanagan, Gene Harris, et al. Still a sceptic? Go see her live concerts. I've attended dozens of them, and I have every single recording she has made (23 to date).
Again, her recordings are great, no doubt. Her live performances are beyond great. Hear for yourself.
Beegie Adair once more with her exceptional interpretations.......2006-02-22
This album shows Beegie Adair interpreting several Cole Porter songs. The beginning of several of her performances reminds me of Oscar Peterson (one of the greatest jazz virtuoses ever).
Her choice of chords (harmony) is also very nice.
If you like Gene Harris, Oscar Peterson, George Shearing, McCoy Tyner, Bill Evans or Ray Charles you will appreciate her fine interpretations.

Some Very Good Covers.......2004-01-25
The late Susannah McCorkle cut a very good album with this one. I loved her cover of "Let's Do It"; she effortlessly knocked off what must be every known lyric to that song. My favorite, though, was "It's All Right With Me" for the countermelodies in the arrangement. The back-up instrumentalists (particularly Ken Peplowski) are fine throughout. Consistently fine throughout. Recommended.
Great Album * Sad Admirer.......2003-09-24
I first became a fan of Ms. McCorkle in 1996 when I heard Susannah on public radio doing some of her work including stuff from then new album "Easy to Love: The Songs of Cole Porter". I was immediately enthralled and ran out and bought the CD. I love this compilation of Cole Porter songs. It's great to sit out on the porch at sunset, sipping wine and listen to this entire album, bidding farewell to another glorious day. I was saddened by her death as I'd been planning since 1998 to make a trip to New York City with the sole intent to catch one of Susannah's shows. God bless you Susannah, I hope to catch your act when I get to Heaven!
Unique interpretations of Cole Porter songs.......2003-03-13
Susannah established a reputation for singing songs from the Great American Songbook in her own way. This is never more evident than on this collection of songs written by Cole Porter. Of course, the first thing you notice is the song selection - a typical mix of famous and obscure. It would have been interesting to hear Susannah sing I get a kick out of you, to name one of many obvious songs not included, but instead we get Weren't we fools and Why don't we try staying home - two very obscure but delightful songs that I'd never heard before.
Many of the song will be familiar to you in some form. Night and day is a song that Susannah originally sang part of for a commercial. After it was shown on TV, people wanted to buy her version of the song, so here it is. Anything goes is given an octet arrangement in ¾ time. Just one of those things and It's all right with me are cleverly linked in a medley. Other famous songs to be found here include Easy to love, Let's do it and Ev'ry time we say goodbye.
Susannah recorded many excellent albums before committing suicide. I have all the available original albums and I enjoy them all. For anybody new to Susannah's music, this is a good one to start with, because it contains so many familiar songs, so you can get a sense of how her versions differ from those you've heard before.
Susannah is better live than on cds.......2001-06-18
My wife and I had the privilege of hearing Susannah live on several occasions at the Oak Room in the Big Apple. What a great live performer Susannah was. I feel like she is much better live than on recordings.
What a tragedy it was when we got the news of her death. We felt like she was a member of our extended family. She was a great performer, but least of all a great person. She did a lot of charity work, but never ask for publicity. We will al miss her!
As far as this cd goes, we only liked 5 songs out of the 14 performed her. My calculator says this is only a 40% rating so all we can give her for this effort is a 2 star rating. We need to be honest disite our friendship.
In conclusion we would like to say that we know Susannah is with God and that when we die we will reunited with her again. With all our love, Mom and Pops
Lovely.......2001-06-07
I'd never heard of Susannah McCorkle until an article in the NEW YORKER magazine about her untimely death.
I ordered three McCorkle CD's...this is, by far, the best of the lot.
I love any artist who uses all the lyrics (Weslia Whitfield comes to mind)...and McCorkle coaxes so much out of each phrase.
I didn't much care for WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE or YOU DO SOMETHING TO ME, but the rest are almost perfect.
Enjoy!

Fantastic song bird.......2007-04-06
Lee Wiley was unique as are these recordings. Her voice is sultry, soft and wonderful to listen to. The songs are all "pop" with great lyrics that make today's songs pale in comparison. I have been a fan of Wiley's for many years but only recently learned we share the same birthdate, October 9th. Maybe that was a "hidden affinity". But in any event I think she is one of the most underrated jazz vocalists of all time.

There never was a singer like Lee Wiley and these singular recordings have survived over the decades as a testament to a smokey, knowing, wry, evocative jazz vocalist beyond compare. The songs have survived over the decades, too--literate, unusual, engaging. A wonderful collection.
Classics from the 40s.......2002-09-09
Lee Wiley made these recordings for the Liberty Record Shop in the days before conglomerates controlled everything on record. She was a singer with great musical style and a clarity of voice that lets every lyric shine through. Plus, she knew everyone in New York and got the best musicians as back up to her intimate, sophisticated vocals. I especially like the tracks with "Organ by Maurice" -- Hammond organ played by Fats Waller, though contract restrictions prohibited using his name. I'd give the Gershwin recordings a slight edge over the Cole Porter takes, but all of them are terrific. This is incredibly stylish music from a time when style meant more than the clothes one wore. The recording quality is quite good -- an essential disc for every lover the American popular song.
Best CD In My 2000 Record Jazz Collection..........1999-10-02
I am a 21 year old jazz collector, I have over 2000 jazz lp's and Cd's, 78's exe.. and this is my favorite jazz vocal CD. Lee Wiley is wonderful(read Will Fiedwald's "Jazz Singing to find out how wonderful Lee Wiley is). Listen to Wiley's voice and let all the cares in the world just disappear. Buy the best cd in the world.

Cole Porter's songs have long enjoyed a special place in Bobby Short's repertoire, but this set gives additional luster with fine fresh arrangements by Short, guitarist Howard Alden, and tenor saxophonist-conductor Loren Schoenberg, among others. Short is the ideal artist for Porter's songs, and it's more than mere respect for lyrics and his meticulous diction and musicality. He seems to live inside Porter's world, with its archly comic sophistication, its ambiguities, and its suddenly pointed insights. Above all, Short is able to find the subtle emotional tones that these songs require to be fully realized, the celebratory with hints of losses past and to come, the wistful knowledge that experience must be seized to be savored. The accompaniments range from Short's piano through duets with Alden or bassist Frank Tate to a fine small group and a big band, and along the way there are particularly good solo contributions by Alden and trumpeter Virgil Jones. Amid the sentiment there are two of Porter's witty list songs. "You're the Top," with its manic inventory of all things good and beautiful--Mahatma Gandhi, Mickey Mouse, Pepsodent, Jimmy Durante's nose--is spirited, while "Can-Can," another inventive inventory--"If an elm and an oak and an ash can, Baby, you can cancan too"--is delivered with broad humor and sly insinuation. Short is the ultimate cabaret singer; his art is timeless rather than nostalgic. --Stuart Broomer

NOTHING BEATS SHORT SINGING PORTER.......2000-02-02
Bobby Short has to be the leading Cole Porter interpreter today. It's hard not to think of Short and not picture him singing Porter. As for Cole Porter he is simplely the GREATEST composer that ever lived. In my opinion. I never heard Short sing some of the songs on this album and was wondering when he would record them. For instance "What Is This Thing Called Love" which is a or should I say WAS a very popular song. There's something extra here in this album,Short now works with a orchestra. Also he has Howard Alden playing his great guitar. I happened to hear Alden in the movie "Sweet and Lowdown". Short once again makes a great album. If your a fan of Cole Porter's music or Bobby Short...YOU HAVE TO GET THIS!

Customer Reviews:
Ethel Deserved Better Than This.......2001-06-22
There may indeed be no business like show business. RCA was a major backer of this musical, and fully expected to record the original cast album. Decca, Merman's recording label, wouldn't allow her to appear. The solution the two compnaies decided on was an original cast album on RCA featuring Dinah Shore doing Merman's numbers, and this mediocre studio album.
Decca was never a winner when it came to modern recording techniques. Merman's voice has no echo or reverb to enhance her performance. The arrangements are by Gordon Jenkins, which fit Ethel's style like it was a dress bought in a bargain basement. It is a shame that in the later years of her life, Ethel didn't choose to revisit this score and re-record it, as she did with Annie Get Your Gun twice.
The selections from Panama Hattie are a nice rarity, but they are taken from scratchy shellac originals. There are several compilations that include these numbers with no annoying extraneous noise.

Customer Reviews:
A smooth voice in a smooth repertoire........2004-04-04
Cesare Siepi's bass voice is greatly underrepresented in the CD catalogue. This album lets us know what an artist he was. His interpretations are always just right, and never over the top. Only an occasional accent slips in. His English diction should be a model for all singers. I lost no more than 5% of the words. The wonderful way he caresses his way into "Night and Day" or sails through "Begin the Beguine" are wonderful examples of his artistry. Siepi includes the often omitted verses to each song, and that is a plus.
The sound quality is more than acceptable. It isn't digital, but here the fidelity comes from the artistry and not the sound itself. In fact the sound quality is a lot better than the 1955 recording date might indicate. I was not bothered in the least ... in fact I was pleasantly surprised.
There are unfortunately lots of typos in the notes that should have been corrected. Myto should review such things before putting them out on the market.
Siepi's way with the Italian songs is equally enjoyable. How nice to have someone sing them instead of bawling them to the rafters. This is a winner album, and it would be 5 stars if the sound were a little more modern.
Delightful collection of songs performed by great artist.......1999-05-24
Despite the inferior sound quality of this CD, it is pleasing to have this unusual collection available. Cesare Siepi is a great artist, with the best English diction of any classical Italian singer within memory. Although I remember him best as the most dashing and truly seductive Don Giovanni at the Met, he is equally convincing with a popular song. A rare achievement! Siepi, I love you as much today as I did when I was an infatuated teenager.
