they are everything you could want in 60's Heavy Psychedelic Rock the way it should be "Live and Wild" the only thing I did not like was that they changed the order of the songs and I only knew that because of a bad cut which did not effect any of the song preformances. Tim and Carmine Still blow you away. Turn it Up and trip to the 60's.

5 out of 5 stars Album #4 of 7.......2006-12-17

Mind Blowin' is in my opinion, a great album. Vanilla probably was trying to
go for the "gangsta" or maybe even "g-funk" sound here which was quite a stretch. But, if you want to sell records, you have to adapt to what is popular. At least to an extent. Obviously, no one really bought Vaniila Ice as a "G", but if you actually listen to it, the production is good. It would be easy to imagine Snoop, Dre, Eazy-E (R.I.P.), or almost any other black rapper (except maybe Hammer or Fresh Prince) spittin' on these tracks. As far as lyrics, I'd say this is probably his best work, he borrowed a lot of lines from this album and used them on later ones. I thought the dreads were a little ridiculous, though. If you are a fan and you haven't heard this, buy it. If you aren't a fan, try to forget that this is Vanilla Ice. Imagine he is some rapper from the 90's and just pop it in and chill, you might be surprised when you notice yourself bobbin' your head.

3 out of 5 stars Probably the best in the Vanilla Ice catalog.......2006-03-30

I first listened to this album about seven years ago and have heard it a few times since, including just this past year, as I know a couple people who own a copy. I don't own this cd myself, and have no plans to buy it. However, I felt the need to offer an objective review that will balance out all the ones left by people who are either hardcore Vanilla Ice fans or extreme haters, with no middle ground in sight. I've heard it enough times to give a pretty informed review. I've also heard pretty much everything else in his catalog, so it will be easy for me to make some comparisons to earlier (and later) work.

'Mind Blowin' was Vanilla Ice's attempt to return to the top of the charts in 1994. The album had a more loose and laid back feel compared to earlier efforts from Rob Van Winkle. 'Mind Blowin' turned out to be a commercial failure, for a variety of reasons.

To start, SBK Records (Ice's label) went under around the time this came out and any promotional efforts dried up with the label. Secondly, hip hop (and pop) fans were not buying the new, tougher, funkier Vanilla Ice sound. This is an album that is often classified (mistakenly) as gangster rap, like M.C. Hammer once attempted himself. This is actually more along the lines of Cypress Hill or House of Pain, as opposed to Dr. Dre, N.W.A. or Snoop Dogg. You could even classify this as safe, radio-friendly party rap, not unlike Sir Mix A Lot. Ice manages to avoid any real cursing or profanity on this album, even stopping himself before swearing at one point, so he doesn't come across as tough as he might like to. That or he wanted to get as many cuts played on the radio as possible. Isn't this what it is all about?

Truth is, 'Mind Blowin' is actually Vanilla Ice's best album which may not be saying much. However, it is significantly better than 'To The Extreme', 'Extremely Live' or anything that has come out since this release. There are a lot of popular songs that are sampled or lifted in this album, something Vanilla Ice has done throughout his career. Rob/Ice has a number of very short song intros (i.e. "Live Intro" and "Smooth Interlude"), which is also par for the course on his studio albums.

"Fame" is indeed a David Bowie cover and this selection opens the album, getting it off to a decent start. "The Wrath" and "Roll em up" were both released as singles, which gives you a clue as to what some of the better songs on this effort are. "Hit em hard" is a comical track in which Vanilla stumbles through an attempted diss/threat on Mark Wahlberg (Marky Mark) and New Kids on the Block, which is pointless since neither of them (or Ice) were selling a lot of records in 1994. Why even bother going after them? You won't find top-notch rapping on the song, but the diehard Vanilla Ice fans will undoubtedly eat this one up. The rapping isn't much better on "Now & Forever" but at least the sampling is pretty good. "Iceman Party" follows and sounds very dated, like an outtake from an earlier album. The song makes references to both cassette tapes, thanking fans for (quote) "buying Vanilla Ice tapes", and to the year 1992 (even though 'Mind Blowin' came out in 1994). It suggests that Ice had this tune laying around for a couple years and threw it on the album anyway, without bothering to update it.

"Oh My Gosh", like "Roll em' up" earlier on the album, makes reference to smoking pot, a theme that occasionally shows up on this record. "Minutes of Power" sounds like something Coolio was doing when he was still making MTV hits. It is actually one of the best (and funkiest) tunes Ice has ever done, for better or worse. "I Go Down" is Vanilla Ice copying Tupac Shakur and doing an ok job. He actually gives a shout out to both Tupac and Mary J. Blige in this song, maybe hoping this will give him some credibility. "Bullet On The Chart" is just another short song intro (like some of the others I previously mentioned), which leads into the next tune ("Phunky Rhymes"). "Phunky Rhymes" disses Two Live Crew and also thanks all the supporters who stuck with Ice during thick and thin, it isn't that bad of a song overall. "Blowin' My Mind" is something that would have never appeared on an earlier Vanilla Ice album. However, it does contain the same old lyrics boasting about his sexual conquests. "Son Of A Gun" (mistitled on Amazon) is a short sample, like the ones that came before it. "Get Loose" attempts to rehash the earlier hit "Ice Ice Baby" at one point. This final track is the weakest effort and has some of the poorest rapping of the entire lp. It is certainly not a good way to finish things up.

Quite honestly, I liked this one better than I expected. It is the best Vanilla Ice is capable of and that isn't so bad. Some fans of this artist may not know that Rob Van Winkle later rehashed two songs from this album, "The Wrath" and "Oh my gosh", on his so-called heavy metal/nu-metal comeback cd, 'Hard To Swallow', which came out in 1998 on a major label and nearly went gold (stunning a lot of naysayers).

Despite the modest rating of three stars, anyone who digs Vanilla Ice or late 80's/early 90's whitebread or pop rap would do well to pick this up. This is an essential release for the Vanilla Ice fanbase, which has more members than people might think, even if they are fans for the kitsch value alone. If you've always loathed this "rapper", don't even bother. Nothing about 'Mind Blowin' is likely to change (or blow) your "mind", pardon the pun.

While it is not all that important, it is worth noting that 'Mind Blowin' had the best cover art of any Vanilla Ice album. It was also the very first time he started using a brand new logo which has appeared on every album cover since.

5 out of 5 stars Smart concept to put two popular rappers on one CD!.......2004-05-30

When I saw this in 1997, I went "Long overdue!" They are the true reasons why rap albums spent 37 weeks at Number One on the Billboard 200 in 1990 and 1991! They were two different artists to me, even though they wore nearly the same kinds of glittery outfits. MC Hammer's songs concentrated on repetition and addictive hooks, while Vanilla Ice focuses more on his rap style riding over very catchy but daring dance tracks! But there is more an emphasis toward hip-hop than the pop labels given to them. They are surprisingly street too! This album has a lot of energy on most of it--it will have you dancing for days!!!! Along with Run-DMC and other artists before them, they helped rap become huge during the '90s. Even though their later albums never matched their most successful ones, they are still classic artists to me! The last Hammer song weaves very well into the first Ice song on this album. They were two of Capitol-EMI's most successful artists at the time, and it was smart for Capitol-EMI Special Markets to release this. I hope that each of them consider making another album like that and have everybody dancing again. They were really at the top of their games with their music.

5 out of 5 stars Life is worth living... now........2004-03-14

This CD is an amalgam, a confluence if you will, of two radically different artists audio masterpieces. As everyone knows, "rap" music was invented in 1990 by Master of Ceremonies Hammer (or "MC Hammer", as he was known on the streets). The Hammer had tired of the drivel that emanated from the speakers whenever he turned the radio on. Hammer decided it was time, no... "Hammer Time", to make an album of music that would cause no less than a paradigm shift in the world's pop music scene. His Piece d' Resistance, "(yo)U can't touch this", garnered nationwide critical praise. The song was an infusion of street beats and quirky synths, and rife with Hammer's patented brand of bragadoccio and swagger. Perhaps Hammer's most stunning artistic achievement, "Have You Seen Her", is a tender ballad which showcased crisp beats and complex contrapuntal textures. As Hammer is also a high ranking member of Mensa, it surprised no one to hear such insightful and witty lyrics as "The girl is hard to see, like an unseen DJ". But Hammer knows that the formula for Success has a very important variable: God. With the release of "Pray", Hammer lets you know that he doesn't just have a closet full of baggy pants and a trophy case full of music awards... he also has a Bible. Well, as if having a disc full of Hammer's Sonic mastery weren't enough, included are tracks by his Protege, Vanilla Ice. Vanilla Ice began writing music under Hammer's auspices, and soon the student overtook the teacher. Vanilla literally turned the music industry on its head with "Ice Ice Baby", an obvious metaphor for the cold and unrelenting misery that everyone feels as they come to the painful realization that we are truly alone in this world. Vanilla also had impressive production skills, as is evident on his masterpiece "Dancin". The fast, schizophrenic editing and choppy beats have influenced such artists as Aphex Twin and Conway Twitty. Do yourself a favor, and purchase this CD as soon as possible. You will improve your quality of life by tenfold.

5 out of 5 stars A perfect collaboration.......2004-03-12

MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice is two rap legends, and without them, I don't think that rap music would be such a big deal. "Ice Ice Baby" is fantastic, but "U can't touch this" is the greatest number of them all. It's hard to sit still when you hear it, your feet wants to dance. its a fantastic CD to a fantastic price, and when i saw it, i bought it right away....

Album Description

Nanette Workman is taking care of business at the "Vanilla Blues Café"! Following up on the success of "Roots N Blues", the Mississippi Queen now proposes a sweet cocktail of Electric and Acoustic Blues with a twist of Rock and just a dash of Soul. What gives these 11 tracks their hard-edged taste are the c ollaborations; be it with Eric Lapointe on a remake of the hit "Rock Steady" (written by Bryan Adams), or with talented guests like Jimmy James, Jim Zellers and Jean Millaire. And let's not forget her very special rendition of "I Lost My Baby" by Quebec star Jean Leloup, the perfect punch to a well-blended album.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Nanette.......2005-09-10

Nanette just plain sings good blues. She uses good material & has a great delivery. I probably really like her previous Roots & Blues better, but this is just a darned good blues album. I guess I'd like to hear her do more on the jazz side & more of her French (Montreal) blues, but one way or the other , it's a joy to listen to. She doesn't try to affect a down & dirty blues image (thank god for a little honesty, but is just a great performer who has a way of putting her own very personal mark on everything she does. I had the chance to see her do a kind of glitzy TV special type of thing at the casino in Montreal back in June & was frankly glad that she didn't put on a blues singer show. This woman has a lot of talent & works with great musicians.
