3 out of 5 stars Flat inside the dog.......2005-05-15

Ever wonder what acid piano-jazz sounds like?

No, I haven't either. Yet that's the sound that best describes Bablicon, one of the lesser-known Elephant 6 bands. And it's the sound that runs all through the inexplicably named "The Flat Inside A Fog: That Cat That Was a Dog," which has a lot of marvelous moments that never quite get together.

It begins with an ominous piano solo, which quickly segues into a mellow jazzy song, with "Blue Hawaii" singing too softly. A more folky, bluegrassy sound enters with "Travelling," but there the "normal" sounds end. After that comes a strange, ominous instrumental, and an eerie violin song with what the liner notes call an "alien orchestra." So that's what those quacking noises are.

From there on, the acid-jazz sound rules. With emphasis on the "acid" part -- there are many jazzy rhythms, sure. But there are far more demonic wails, sparkling theremin, samples from another planet ("ghetto duck"?), drunken horns and weird instrumental interludes.

Actually, "Flat Inside a Fog..." is pretty entertaining, and extremely original music. It sounds like jazz played by aliens, a sound that few other bands can claim they have. And they manage that kind of music exceptionally, giving a psychedelic edge to your ordinary jazz rhythms and dancey piano grooves.

But Bablicon seems to be striving for the exquisite chaos of Olivia Tremor Control and other bands, and here it doesn't quite work. Those songs sound like jams, rather than orchestrated mayhem. "Misted Fin," for example, is a minute and a half of tuneless fuzz organ, while "Aether" is a repetitive piano solo overlaid with eerie theremin. An interesting idea, but it's actually kind of boring.

Despite those songs, they can rock out with outstanding style, mixing psychedelic madness with jazzy rhythms. Drums, bass, electronics, and piano are joined by sax, clarinet, organ and oboe. Not to mention the less conventional instruments listed, like alien orchestra, fish duet, and electric ghetto duck. No, don't ask me what those are, because I don't know.

Bablicon does a pretty good job of bringing this strange acid-piano-jazz sound to life, but the chaotic experimental tracks bog down the amazing sound.
