Winner of a 1999 MacArthur Foundation "genius" grant, tenor saxophonist and bandleader Ken Vandermark sounds downright mainstream on this nod to Jamaican-born alto saxophonist Joe Harriott. Of course, you have to figure in the changing perspectives that time allows, though, when considering Harriott's music. He recorded in England in the 1960s, drawing parallels with Ornette Coleman both in terms of his tune conceptions and his biting, bluesy phrasing. But Harriott's band was always more thrilled with vertical harmonic studies than Coleman's and, at the same time, guided by a pianist. Here Vandermark skips the piano, opting for a lean quartet of trombonist Jeb Bishop, bassist Kent Kessler, and drummer Tim Mulvenna. They take pieces from Harriott's cult-fave first two albums, Abstract and Free Form, and neither speed them or slow them, instead honing in on a midtempo bounce that draws the horns into limber solos and complex arrangements that sound like vintage, 1960s-era Blue Note tracks. Vandermark, who's known for volcanic intensity, stop-time shifts, and on-a-dime turns, here maintains a telescopic focus on the tunes, each of which is splendid, even for the many who've never heard of Harriott. --Andrew Bartlett

1 out of 5 stars Decent song from a tragic album.......2007-05-05

This song is half decent, but the follow up album is a major dissapointment, with Daniel coming across as a pretentious tryhard.

5 out of 5 stars Great preview for the upcoming CD!.......2007-04-03

This single is a great peak into the upcoming album. It sort of preps you. Most Chair fans know by now that you never get the same thing from Silverchair twice--and "Young Modern" is no exception. Frankly, though I love all the Silverchair records, I think this may be the best one yet. It at least ties with "Diorama".

This single is worth buying, because it has "Sleep All Day," an awesome song that wouldn't have quite fit on the "Young Modern" record. It's an edgy mix between The Dissociatives, the new Chair songs, and many of Johns' old influences like Nirvana. It is a nice stepping stone towards "Young Modern," and well worth the $12.

The only other exclusive track on this disc is "Don't Want to Be the One (Live)." The best part is Daniel's dialogue at the beggining, but you won't find yourself listening to this track over and over again.

4 out of 5 stars Daniel John's solo project.......2007-03-28

Well. When I heard the first single, "Straight Lines" I thought it sounded decent. I expected a lot more of that sound on this album.
Strangely enough it's probably the most rocking song on the album.
Apart from "Straight Lines" the album sounds like Daniel's side project with Paul Mac, "THE DISSOCIATIVES". It's fairly experimental, extremely pretentious, and so all over the place it's hard to enjoy in one listen.
This may have been better as Daniel's debut solo album or the next Dissociatives album.
The other two members of the band are now basically relegated to backing band to Daniel's self indulgence.
There's very little tone from the bass, it's just merged into the backround. The drums lack their classic "silverchair sound". It sounds more like session musicians playing along.
Musically this album has a 1960's & 70's sort of sound. Cinematic ballads. I hear a lot of John lennon's solo work and McCartney's in it too.
Some of the highlights are "Those thieving birds". "If you keep losing sleep".
Unfortunately there are quite a few weak tracks such as "Mindreader", "Insomnia", "Man that knew too much", "Waiting all day". Boring is the thought that comes to mind. Daniel seems to be trying out some other vocal stylings, a lot of english accents pop up in his voice now. Some sound alright but some sound cringeworthy.
David Bottrill's mix of this album is very brick wall and in your face.
It doesn't back off much.
I still don't know what to think of it as an album. It's very odd.
It's almost bizarre to go back and listen to Frogstomp then put this new album on. It's like a completely different band.
I'm sure it will grow on me more. The highlights are quite good but I would have preferred it if Daniel had continued with the Diorama sound. It still generally sounded like a band back then.
CHEERS!

4 out of 5 stars a fine album it is.......1999-08-09

Music by a band ahead of it's time. Tony Mansfield (singer, composer, producer) has the ability of constructing a warm sound out of all the electronic instruments. Although you don't hear a guitarist and drummer on this album, it still has a great deal of emotion. The second album Anywhere, is already released. I am however waiting on ther third CD-release, Warp.

5 out of 5 stars It's about time this was reissued........1999-07-28

I am one fan who is not afraid to declare that Tony Mansfield was a pop music genius. He had an admirable ability of crafting techno-pop sing-along melodies while tossing in the occasional special effect. This album is the first of two New Musik LPs that came out in 1980-1981. Some of the songs are just fun-filled tunes that you want to tap your toes to. Sometimes some lessons were to be learned in the social and political commentary of the lyrics. "Dead Fish Don't Swim Home" speaks out against war. "On Islands" reminds us that we are all one big happy family on this planet Earth. Let's not screw it up. "Living By Numbers" makes me think of Number 6 on the TV Show "The Prisoner" "...We don't want your name...just your number." Mansfield has gone onto to produce the likes of the B-52's. This re-release is long overdue and a snapshot of a bygone era when disco faded and New Wave began. And to have additional cuts makes it even a better treasure. I hope they re-release the second album soon.

Occupying its own unique space somewhere between alternative-folk and indie-pop, Private Eleanor's third full-length album finds them delivering a rich, textured set of songs that add touches of alt-country heartbreak, post-punk energy, and shoegazing atmosphere to the band's widescreen pop palette. 'No Straight Lines' was released in 2005 to considerable acclaim; 75orless.com went so far as to call it "the final album Elliott Smith should have made."

            4 out of 5 stars Great fun.......2004-09-03

I read somewhere that Tony Mansfield was never as happy with this album as he was with the two later ones (Anywhere & Warp). I don't know. I have always liked this one. i bought it back in '80 when it first came out and as soon as it became available on CD, I was one of the first in line to get it. I like the beat, the catchy riffs, the hooks, and just the whole general feel of the album. Technically it was a product of its time. Today's electronic music has a certain "BIG" production sound about it. If you're listening to this you might hear a weak spot here and there and some of the electronic sounds used are used more than once. But just listen to the songs and you'll enjoy it.

            5 out of 5 stars ELECTRO-POP AT IT'S BEST!!!!.......2001-03-16

This album was quite simply years ahead of it's time!

Singer/Writer/Producer Tony Mansfield (Captain Sensible, Nick Straker Band, After the Fire and others) knocks out some finely-crafted tunes with subjects ranging from ecological concerns to international politics (bearing in mind this was at the height of the Cold War) - yet making it all thoroughly enjoyable.

With a pleasingly-unusual array of some dreamy synth textures courtesy of a Prophet 5 and a Yamaha CS80, a 12-string guitar and a synth-snare(!), this album is a MUST for any afficionado of late 70's/early 80's synthy-pop rock.

Straight Lines, World of Water and Sanctuary were all Top-100 hits for the band in the UK.

This version contains the B-sides of the singles (which were not on the original vinyl album).

            Enjoy!!
