Roscoe Mitchell's new Song for My Sister will surprise those who pigeonhole the multi-reed player and flutist as a "free jazz" improviser and not much more. A founding member of the Art Ensemble of Chicago and the equally influential Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, Mitchell is often associated with the kind of bombastic free jazz that the Art Ensemble pioneered in the 1960s--but as the wonderfully varied Song for My Sister proves, that's not a fair categorization of his broad composing and improvising talents. Recorded with the Note Factory, Mitchell's nine- piece double-trio ensemble (two bassists, two drummers, two pianists), Song for My Sister opens with the lyrical title track, a swinging modal workout that wouldn't sound out of place on John Coltrane's Olé. From there Mitchell dips into several of his many musical personalities: "This," a beautiful chamber-music piece originally set to one of e.e. cummings's poems that utilizes Mitchell's bass and great bass recorders; the percussion-and-piano "The Megaplexian," which echoes Indonesian gamelan music; and some thrilling rides into free improvisation on "Sagitta" and "When the Whistle Blows." Song for My Sister certainly doesn't fit into the neat categories that mark many major-label jazz releases these days--a fact that both longtime and recent fans of Mitchell's nearly 40-year career will find heartening. --Ezra Gale

"Vision--The Music of Hildegard von Bingen"? Make that "Hildegard--the Dance Remix." (Yes, it has been used on the dance floor of at least one New York City nightclub.) What else can you call it when Richard Souther takes the stark, ecstatic plainchant of the 12th-century abbess and adds heavily produced electronic trance-and-dance tracks? Souther's additions aren't bad in themselves--they are a bit New Age-y, yet danceable in a druggy 3:00-a.m. kind of way--but slather them over Hildegard's spare, intense chant melodies and the effect is perverse, if not just silly. Don't blame poor Emily van Evera--she is a fine interpreter of Hildegard, and EMI simply asked her to record some unaccompanied solo tracks of the abbess's music and send in the tapes; she had no idea what was going to be done with them until this disc came out with her name on it. This shows up in the final product: the gently fluid pulse van Evera applied to Hildegard's music (which would make perfect sense in the a cappella performance she thought she was giving) feels completely disconnected from the rigid rhythms inherent in Souther's electronic accompaniment. Now, there are a number of customer reviews, below, from listeners who like this title a great deal--have a look at them, check out the sound clips, and by all means get this title if you're interested. But, if you're curious about Hildegard, go to the recording that made her famous eight centuries after her death: A Feather on the Breath of God. --Matthew Westphal
Customer Reviews:
A very different style of Hildegard.......2007-01-30
This CD isn't quite the shining example of Hildegard's music, but it isn't dissapointing either. The new-agey music and the chanting go well together, but at times the mix is a little akward, and it is those moments when it seems that the vocals are just stamped on top of the music that takes away from this album. Otherwise, the music is pretty rich and conjures epic and heavenly images. I'd have to side with the 'purists' on this one: if you're a stickler for authentic sounding Hildegard music, go for the other albums such as Luminous Spirit because this one might come across as a little weird.
ONE WORD- 'AWSOME".......2006-12-15
I have been a fan of music since before I was born it seems- I have almost all of her music- but this is the star on the night sky- people keep trashing this album /cd- I think this is the best of her visions/music and if you want to be swept away on clouds of tone and dance with angels of light then BUY this cd- I love to darken the house , light the candles and let this one spin again and again- listen closely to " for the virgin' it will make you want to play this over and over again-also this entire cd was recorded in the catacombs- how spiritual is that, music/thought/words/visions from years turned to dust and stone- may this cd bring you back to a time when the world was innocent and gentle/have played this along with Enigma and people can not get enough of this cd!!!!!!!!!!
Very different. Hauntingly beautiful.......2006-03-01
I bought VISION, THE MUSIC OF HILDEGARD VON BINGEN without even hearing it first. I couldn't resist the album's cover art and the premise of recording the chants of a 12th century nun with modern original scores. I was delightfully surprised at how well the experiment works. The tracks are absolutely beautiful and haunting. In listening to one of the chants accompanied by an almost jarring drum beat, I felt as if I were dropped deep into a dense African jungle where a safari of large powerful natives are escorting small white hooded nuns to some mysterious lost city. A very different, very intriguing, very fine work.
"Every Element Has A Sound" ~ Heavenly Visions Of A Medieval Mystic.......2006-01-29
Hildegard Von Bingen (1098-1179), 12th century Benedictine nun, abbess and mystic wrote some of the most heavenly spiritual chants, psalms and canticles in the history of the Catholic Church. Compositions that are so unique and universal in appeal that they were embraced by the 'New Age Movement' more enthusiastically then they were originally by her own Church.
Similiar yet subtly different from the lofty, remote gregorian chants sung in the monastery, the music of Hildegard is much more accessible. Her experience of the 'Divine Mysteries' is conveyed in more emotional and earthy tones, thus linking the higher aspirations of the soul with the passionate nature of the human heart.
'Vision' was performed and recorded within the stone walls of St. Andrew's Church in Toddington, England, an almost perfect location to capture the medieval atmosphere of Hildegard's compositions. The female voices involved in this project are a sharp and welcome contrast to the all male gregorian choirs most of us are more familiar with.
Truly a mystical musical experience has been captured on these 17 exquiste tracks. For the spiritual seeker in all of us!
SUPERB MODERN CLASSIC.......2005-10-26
SOARING, ETHEREAL voices are followed by haunting, vaguely Middle Eastern new age sound. HILDEGARD meets ENIGMA. It works. The purists make no room for this kind of interpretation of Hildegard but I remind you that the Louvre built a separate museum to house the Impressionist art not because they were so valued but because they did not consider it serious art and would not put it under the same roof with the classics. Time made buffoons of them. Listen to the sound clips and judge for yourself.

A Celebration of the American Art Song.......2000-12-30
What a line up of great American Composers. John Musto is personally my favorite New American Composer. "Recuerdo" is an excellent example of his amazing music. His music has so many different influences (Blues, Jazz, Ragtime, and Classical) all blended together to make one rich sound, William Sharp sings them with such sensitivity and grace. Paul Bowles' "Blue Mountian Ballads" are a perfect example of his great choice of text (Tennesse Williams)and his perfect setting of deep southern Music that the text requires. I just get so excited when I hear an album like this, celebrating the American Art Song and it's great and promising future with Young Composers like John Musto and Eric Klein. William Sharp and Stephen Blier are a dynamic duo and pick great repertoire that shows this off exsquisitely.
American classical that blooms from the soul of the earth........2000-09-10
Virgil Thompson's compositions are a refreshing slice of pure amaricana. His works are uplifting, captureing the american soul in much the same way Aron Copland did. Paul Bowles (author of ' The Sheltering Sky')is also featured. He actually studied under Virgil Thompson and their light, airy music compliments each other well, each painting a familiar pastoral lanscape. One can almost feel a cool breeze on a vibrant spring day. The melodies glide like butterflys, conjuring up the smells of flowers or the light-blue of a summer sky. Though not a work of genious, Thompson and Bowles nevertheless manage to create some magical, unforgettable sounds.

Paul Bowles had two careers, one as a composer of music for films, dance theater, and Broadway; the other as a writer of extraordinary fiction of the Beat era. While Bowles's fiction has a roughness and an alienation characteristic of the American expatriate experience of the 1950s (he moved to Morocco in 1949 and was friends with William S. Burroughs), his music is anything but. The Pastorela (1947) and Suite for Small Orchestra (1932-33) rival anything Aaron Copland was writing at the same time without being derivative or otherwise influenced by Copland's folksy Americana. As typical of RCA, the recorded sound is excellent, but special kudos go to the Eos Orchestra who invest Bowles's music with grace, color, and charm. Don't pass this release up. --Paul Cook
Customer Reviews:
It's Great To Be An American!.......2001-05-17
I have had a long-term interest in the missing generation of American composers -- that is, the generation of the '30s and '40s who tended to leftist views. Their most popular surviving members are Copland and Bernstein; but they also include Blitzstein, Bowles, Barber, Diamond, Foss, etc. I am quite grateful that they are slowly being rediscovered.
My interest in Paul Bowles began with a performance script of Tennessee Williams' "The Glass Menagerie," which specified that no music other than the music of Paul Bowles was to be used in productions of the play. "Who dat?"
Then I discovered "The Sheltering Sky," and a collection of his short stories, and an extremely exotic Morrocan autobiography called "A Life Full of Holes" that he translated. So, I thought, maybe he was really a writer who dabbled in music. But the recent biography of Copland said otherwise. Copland felt that he was very possibly the most talented of that generation. Then a door-stop sized biography of him came and went; more clues to his musical accomplishment but still, no music.
I was beginning to suspect that Mark Blitzstein was the more talented among the relatively unknown members of that generation. And I had recordings of a recital of his songs, "The Cradle Will Rock," "Regina," and "The Airborn Symphony" which supported it.
But this CD indicates a rush to judgment. I still adore Blitzstein, but Bowles is the better craftsman and far more ingenious in his creative approach to rhythm, form and instrumental color.
This CD is just too much fun. Thanks to their French training under Boulanger, they all got a thorough appreciation of the entire battery of Stravinsky's various rhythmic, harmonic, and melodic tricks, including his ongoing appreciation for folk songs and dances. Even the arty songs on this CD are spicy. And I am simply dazzled by the concerto for two pianos. What enormous fun!
May young scholars and performers continue to persue this repertoire and give it the fresh and refreshing interpretation it gets on this CD. It's great to be an American!
Dissonant; the work of unfettered creativity.......2000-07-27
I like minimalists. For whatever reason I like the music of Adams, Glass, some of Reich, and especially the work of one composer whose work I chanced across: Ingram Marshall.
On the other hand, I'd never heard of Paul Bowles. Then there was a concert at the Kennedy Center of various pieces for two (and three) pianos. The conductor preceded the performance of Bowles' Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra with the fact that Bowles is better known as an author than as a composer. I didn't know that, but I paid attention to the Bowles piece. It didn't have the melody or magic fingerwork of the pieces by Mozart, Mendelssohn, or even the piece by Poulenc. But I like it. It reminded me of the minimalists.
I confess that I notice that concerto more than the other pieces on the disk; having seen it performed, I can relate to it more intimately. The booklet along with the CD says that Bowles spent a great deal of time in Tangier apparently fleeing from something in the U.S., probably something considered seditious at the time. During that exile, he, according to the booklet, picked up the influence of French composers. The booklet mentions Satie, Milhaud, and Poulenc. While I listen closely, what I notice is a touch of Ravel. And, since I find Ravel's music outstanding, who am I to criticize Bowles'?
It's hard to describe any of the music. Much of it, again, is minimalist to me. It's dissonant, pops all over. Bowles himself said of one of his pieces, that "it's like a monkey jumping from one tree to another." Some of the six songs seem a bit somber, even funerary. (Maybe I'll have to listen to them more closely.) But it's all so soothing. Since Bowles was an author in addition to being a composer, there was a stream of creative juices flowing from and around him. The mixture--or lack--of styles in the pieces on this CD reveals talent, no doubt about that. But it was a talent not constricted by the norms of his would-be instructors, Aaron Copland and Virgil Thompson. For that I think his instructors would be happy.
Get it and listen to it. It'll grow on you, and grow, and grow.
Bowles as composer, a pleasant surprise.......2000-06-16
It was a surprise to me to find music of the famous author Paul Bowles. I have read Sheltering Sky and I was impressed by it. The CD booklet mentions a dual career for Bowles. Listening to his music I think it is a shame Bowles did not pursue a career as composer. He is by no means a mature composer, but the sincerity and passion of his music are very refreshing. His music is American, with strong influence of Copland. His sound is jazzy and romantic with latin influences. I was very impressed by the two vocal works on the disc. One, a zarzuala based on Garcia Lorca is an exiting piece of music with a latin touch. The other is a suite of six songs, beautifully sung by Kurt Ollmann. Overall the performers do a great job. It is clear they like the music and especially the voices are a good match for this kind of music. I gave it a 5 star rating because of the rareness of the music, the quality of the performance. I bought the disc as a gift and I find it hard to part from it.

THIS IS AN IMPORTANT HISTORICAL STUDY LONG OVERDUE........1999-10-13
Kudos to Jimerson for bringing to public attention Lincoln's passion for fine music. The songs on this recording are beautifully rendered and appear to have been carefully prepared with respect to original instrumentation. As a footnote to amazon.com, the correct title of the first song is "Barbara Allen."

--Ezra Gale
Customer Reviews:
brilliant modern music, bridging "jazz" and "classical".......2002-08-28
Roscoe Mitchell, like Anthony Braxton, long ago obliterated the boundary between "jazz" and "classical" music. Since his first record, SOUND, Mitchell has been developing his innovative and personal sound world. On this new one with the Note Factory nonet, the journey continues, a worthy successor to the astounding NINE TO GET READY on ECM in '99 (see my review). Spencer Barefield on guitar and Jaribu Shahid on bass are still on board from the Sound Ensemble of the 70s and 80s, and Gerald Cleaver is also back from the '99 record on percussion, as is Craig Taborn on piano, while other players are new. The band is 2 drums, 2 bass, 2 pianos, sax, trumpet and guitar.
As on some earlier records of Roscoe's, formal compositions alternate with free improvisations -- "Sagitta," "When the Whistle Blows" and "The Inside of a Star" are the improvised pieces. The diverse compositions are what make this a brilliant record. "Song for My Sister" is the most conventional jazz piece, with a lovely melody. "The Megaplexian" utilizes a percussion instrument designed by Mitchell, along with piano. "this," "Step One, Two, Three" and "Wind Change" are the highlights of the album, and would fit seamlessly with a program of contemporary classical or "new music." Of course, the record ends with Roscoe's traditional funky number -- remember "Big Red Peaches" from NINE TO GET READY, or the AEC's "Odwalla Theme"?
This record reminds me of the Muhal Richard Abrams great record THINGS TO COME FROM THOSE NOW GONE in its diversity and clarity. One of the best of 2002, without a doubt.
Unique Sound.......2002-08-20
This CD contains a rich alternative to the normal everyday boring stuff. It's definitely worth a listen.
These Cats Are Reaching!!!!.......2002-08-06
On this album Roscoe is going for it. He has his own
voice that is so strong , that it lingers throughout
the whole group. The trumpeter on the album has some
exceptionally strong chops as well!
