Good But Short.......2007-06-05

Akira Naito plays all the music on this album, and it's pretty good stuff. The guitar work is some solid thrash, with a melodic and/or groove metal feel at times, mixed with some synthesizing. The Japanese touches to the album gives it a different flavor than your typical thrash album. The bulk of the vocals could best be described as a mix of hardcore and clean singing, though there is also some straight out clean singing, and a few death metal growls. The vocals are pushed to the back somewhat, which might be a plus for some as the vocals on this album are probably an acquired taste. The album is only 17:51 long, so basically it's an EP.

The first song, "Flace on the Ice," is mostly a mix of synth, softer interludes, and solos. The second song, "Insane," has some good thrash riffage and solos, and is probably one of Colourfast's best song. The third song, "Mirage," is another song with some good riffage, though this one has a more moderate pace. The fourth song, "Wings of Steel," picks up the pace again, with some solid thrash.

Counter Blast is thrashier and less melodic than "The Art of One," though I think the latter is a better CD overall. Still, if you're into the thrash/melodic metal genre, I'd recommend this album.

Great Country With a Jesus Spin.......2005-03-18

H.L.s album reminds me of the type of music I listened to as a kid with my Great Grandparents. His vocal style reminds me of the great Hank Williams,Roy Acuff, and The Carter Family. In the 80's George Straight, Reba Mc Entire, and Randy Travis were credited with a movement back to the traditional country sound. I think H.L. dose the same thing for Christian music with his album Something Different.

If you have listened to your local country radio station lately then I am sure you have noticed the number of songs that express the artists Christian faith. Josh Turner's Long Black Train, Randy Travis's Three Wooden Crosses and Buddy Jewel's Help Pour Out the Rain are just a few of the great country songs that have climbed the charts with a strong message about faith. It hasn't always been like this. In 1990 H L Tapley began telling people in the Nashville music industry that country music needed to get back to its Christian roots. He presented songs like Something Different, Brand New Man and Heart as Hard as Steel to many of the then top country artists. At the time the current trend in country music was dance mix music. Songs like Boot Scootin' Boogie by Brooks and Dunn, and Joe Diffie's Honky Tonk Attitude were topping the charts. HL was told that his songs were good songs, BUT the secular listening audience would not be interested in country music with a Christian message. After failing to convince anyone that country music with a Christ centered message was where the country music genre was headed, he decided to record the songs himself as an independent artist. Today Joe Diffie is singing Tougher than Nails and Brooks and Dunn sing Red Dirt Road. Both songs have a strong Christian influence. The list of songs that have a faith centered message goes on and on. It's safe to say that that HL Tapley's CD, Something Different was one of the first CDs to bring the Gospel back into country music. Take a listen to Something Different, the recording that started it all. This CD helped define today's country music.

SOMETHING DIFFERENT.......2004-01-18

This is the first Christian CD I have ever wanted to own. The grassroots classic country style is what makes this album unique.
My favorite cut is and will always be "Forgiven" The message delivered through his music is that of a loving and forgiving Savior. Every cut on SOMETHING DIFFERENT can be associated with challenges confronted by Christians. When you listen to each song, you will wonder how he knew what was on your mind!
H L TAPLEY is truly a gifted song writer. SOMETHING DIFFERENT is one of the top 10 CD's in my collection. I look forward to future releases! Thank you for sharing your gift with us,Howard!

I love the variety of songs that put me in different moods for listening. The voice is clear and smooth and have such feeling. I could listen to it all day simply because it is not monotonous. When you think it is going to repeat a sound, you are shocked to hear a totally different melody. Keep up the good work Tami.
