Customer Reviews:
Sousa By the Royal Marines.......2007-03-31
This is a great CD re-issue of the Band of the Royal Marines School of Music under Graham Hoskins. This band did a three LP series on Sousa marches some years ago that was better than most on this very well covered topic. Sousa march recordings will always come and go, but some like this stand out more than others. For one, there is nothing like the panache of a Royal Marines band. Their sound is a time honored development that gets passed from one generation to the next. Even as the number of RM bands continues to change and downsize, there are now about four bands left in the service, their sound quality continues to be superb.
When these recordings were made RM bands were still at their height in the British service and their quality was amazing. Most bands numbered over 60 in this period, and that is why many Americans may be surprsed at the volume of music produced here. This is not one of your small, though excellent regimental bands! Americans tend to think that British military band instrumentation is on the thin side. Not so here! Of course Sousa always sounds best with either the Allentown band or the US Marine band.
This CD is evidence of how popular Sousa has always been in the UK, and with RM bands in particular. The selection here on two CDs covers most of the standard Sousa fair, with a few different selections here and there. Unfortunatley there are none of Sousa's fine transcriptions for classical music, or selections from his operettas. This music is always wonderful to have in combination with the marches as it shows how much variety he was capable of in his compositions. For that kind of concert the reader is referred to the very fine collection of Sousa music being done under the Naxos label by the Band of the Royal Artillery.
Here you will find a solid collection of Sousa's great marches. Roughly a third of those 136 compositions are contained here. The Royal Marines give a sharpe and clear sound to these works which should certainly inspire. You will also get a very nice idea how RM bands sounded back in the 1980s. Graham Hoskins was a fine director of music, typical of the inhouse genius of the Royal Marines Band Service at that time. He took this band on a USA tour in 1985 with the Arygll & Sutherland Highlanders. Devotees of Sousa should enjoy these spirited versions of the march king's music as performed across the pond.
Still Among the Best.......2006-06-01
I bought two audio casettes with these marches back in the 1980's and wore them out. These performances are hard to beat for virtuosity, enthusiasm, and sparkle. The sound quality is outstanding. And there are some marches that are rarely, if at all, available.
How Sousa Should Sound.......2006-03-07
Great value 2 cd disc set cut in the early 1980's & remastered the sound of the Royal Marines Band is nothing short of terrific. Judging by the sound would not be surprised for this to be a combined double RM band. These 1st chair players give Sousa's great marches that extra kick that takes the "March Kings" music to that higher level. By the center quick march!!!!

Customer Reviews:
A great solo bango bit by Roger McGuinn - yes the guy from the Byrds.......2007-03-23
As a life long McGuinn fan I just want other McGuinn junkies to know that this album contains a real gem. McGuinn was the instrumental accompanist for this album from his pre-hippie folks days (he's even on the cover in a buzz cut and suit) and he really tears it up in his banjo solo on "Whup Jamboree". Roger is soliciting suggestions through his web site for songs to record so I wrote and asked him to record a new version of "Whup Jamboree" for his ongoing folk archives, which he did, and you can now download it. Thanks Roger!
A True Folk Music Gem.......2006-11-10
I have owned this album since it was first released around 1961, and it remains one of my favorites. The Trio is in superb form, with great harmonies and Chad's extraordinary soaring tenor rising above the solid accompaniment by Jim McGuinn (who later changed his first name to Roger and founded the Byrds). The fact that this was recorded live only testifies to the Trio's talent, as their sound could not be improved if it were a studio recording. This is a must for any fan of folk music, and will be a special treat for those who are unaware of the Trio.
the perfect introduction to the chad mitchell trio.......2004-09-05
i'm another who's been listening to (and singing along with) this group for decades. and, even after countless hearings, i'm still amazed at the musicianship and the brilliance of the arrangements.
chad mitchell's voice is phenomenal--and i don't like tenors. but i could listen to him for hours at a time. the technique, the colors, the range--this is a performer to measure others against.
the harmonies and counterpoint are fabulous. the arrangements are spectacular. the width, breadth and depth of musical knowledge and taste and style on this album (and their others) are apparently things of the past, but at least we have the group's recordings to remind us of a time when musicians AND their audiences actually knew something about real music, not just manipulative staging.
i use this group, in particular this album, along with the tannahil weavers, to demonstrate that you really really do NOT need amplification for excitement.
if i had a list of best 100 american albums, this would be on it, close to the top, along with ella's cole porter and bernstein's shostakovich 5th.
I WORE MY ALBUMS OUT.......2002-09-03
I,too, have been listening to the Chad Mitchell Trio for more years than I care to admit. I inherited the albums from my older brother and over the years nearly wore them out (and probably my parents' sanity) from playing them over and over. I have always loved the intricacies of the music and the social commentary of many of the songs. Thank heavens, I finally got them on CD and am now happy as a clam listening to them! Mighty Day on Campus has to be my favorite but all of them go to work with me and I play them during my morning commute to work!
When Folk Music Was Fun.......2001-01-27
I recently saw the Kingston Trio in concert and couldn't believe the good time had by all. Listening to their classics and their new songs, I was reminded of all of the folk albums my parents played when I was a child. Without a doubt the best of those albums was "Mighty Day on Campus" by the Chad Mitchell Trio.
I was only 7 or 8 when we first listened to this album on vinyl, and I almost wish the CD had the slightly scratchy sound that made the album so fun. Yet when I recently heard "Lizzi Borden" again for the first time in more than 10 years, I was taken back to my childhood. The song is hilarious, as is "Super Skier" and "Rum by Gum." The Chad Mitchell Trio represents a genre of American folk music that was laugh-out-loud fun, irreverent, and witty. The melodies are engaging and the songs are easy to sing along with. This, folks, is what good music is all about. If you loved the Kingston Trio, you'll love the Chad Mitchell Trio.
Buy this CD and find out what you have been missing all these years!

Thanks to a superb rerecording of "We Still Need More (Than Anyone Can Give)" by Supergrass, along with a new Elastica track ("Human"), this soundtrack will be a must buy for Anglophiles everywhere. The rest is a mixed bag that may please fans of those featured, but may not sit well with others. Marilyn Manson's remake of Bowie's "Golden Years" gets a mixed review, as does Manson bassist Twiggy Ramirez's collaboration with '60s supermodel Twiggy that is a cover of Dusty Springfield's "I Only Want to Be with You." Both songs are fun, but the novelty will wear quickly. Other notable tracks include the Beck-like "Cowboy Song" by Blur, a Propellerheads mix of Soul Coughing's "Super Bon Bon," and "Empty Ships" by Creeper Lagoon. --Aaron Tassano
Customer Reviews:
3/4 of this c.d. is good.......2000-07-23
While I am in no way, shape, or form a marilyn manson fan, I did enjoy the song "Golden Years". That is probably because it is a David Bowie song, and not an offensive manson song. The rest of the c.d. does have its high points. "Paint By Number" by Self, and "When the Curtain Calls For You" by Jonathan Fire Eater, are particularly worth listening too. All in all, it is a good c.d., though they didn't include some of the great songs in the movie, on the soundtrack.
. . ........2000-07-08
I bought this cd to hear the golden years Manson's version. It was okay; sort of disapointing. The rest was plain annoying except for the twigy and twigy song.

only 2 good songs.......1999-10-10
I bought this CD only for the Creed song Bound an d Tied, and its the best one on the CD. Cowboy Song, and Golden Years aren't bad. I hate all the other songs. CREED ROCKS.

Something very precious.......2004-11-16
John Philip Sousa was a great musician and a great American. These recorded relics are very fascinating, and sometimes most vivid, reminders of his greatness
Great historical resource.......2000-08-24
This set consists of every recording released under the name of "the Sousa Band", from 1897-1930. Since some of these recordings are over 100 years old, they tend to be somewhat scratchy and occasionally faint. If you're a casual fan or you're buying your first Sousa record, your money can be better spent elsewhere.
However, these recordings are an invaluable resourse for students, performers, and teachers. Even with the limitations of early recording devices, there is no better demonstration of the style and nuance of the "March King" than these performances under his own baton. Also, the chance to actually hear Sousa's voice as he introduces the great "Stars and Stripes Forever" is to step into the past.

Love Campus!.......2005-01-30
My sister had the Campus album about the time it first hit the shelves, back when we were in high school (she's 62). I was just amazed at how much of the music and the humor I remembered! The Four Preps had some of the best harmony and overall sound of the times, and all of that was captured in Campus. I like Campus Encore less well, mostly because of the changes in their humor. I wish a CD of Campus were availabe alone, or perhaps combined with The Best of....
Beautiful music, wonderful humor.......2001-04-13
Listening to this CD took me back to when I saw the Preps in concert in the 1960's. They always put on a great show and sang beautifully, and threw in lot of clever humor. I glad some of their shows were saved and can still be listened to. I recommend this CD to anyone who wants to remember or know what late 50s, early 60s music was like.

These albums were recorded live on college campuses around the US back in the early part of the 1960's. The Preps medleys "More Money For You And Me" and "Big Draft" are fantastic, and you have to listen again and again to catch everything said and sung. "He's Gone Away" and "Their Hearts Were Full of Spring" are top-notch ballads. In short, there's something here for everyone. It's kind of Beach Boys harmony in blazers (without Mike's nasal tone) with a lot of tongue-in-cheek humor thrown in for good measure.

Great Sousa Marches.......2001-03-08
This CD is an excellent recording of fine performances of a couple of well-known and many less-often-heard Sousa marches. Those less familiar quickly become as pleasant to listen to as the old favorites. Anyone who enjoys such music will receive more than one full hour of good listening.

Album Description
Sundazed presents the fourth wild Kingsmen platter, featuring the hits 'Annie Fanny' & 'The Climb'! The entire cool 1965 album from the original masters, plus vintage photos, & three mega-rare single tracks as bonus cuts, 'Get Out Of My Life Woman', 'Don't Say No' & 'My Wife Can't Cook'! Look, it's too late to go back & be a '60s frat boy, but you can live it in spirit with the three-inches-of-beer-on-the-rathskeller-floor sound of the legendary Kingsmen! 1994.
Customer Reviews:
Kingsmen - 'The Kingsmen On Campus' (Sundazed).......2007-07-02
First put out in 1965, as 'On Campus' appears to be the frat rocker's third actual album. This CD reissue tags on three bonus tracks. Tunes that keep this disc in my current rotation stack for awhile are "Annie Fanny", their Beatle's cover "Hard Day's Night", Ben E. King's "Stand By Me", the uplifting "Sticks And Stones", "Shotgun" and "Get Out Of My Life Woman". Didn't realize they had SO many compilations available.
Here's the thing that would be the prize........2006-11-06
This was the fourth album by the Kingsmen, of "Louie Louie" fame. There were two original songs released from the album. "Annie Fanny" reached #47 on the charts and "The Climb" reached #65. The rest of the album features mostly mediocre cover versions of recent hits. An okay album, but a Kingmen greatest hits album would be a better bet for most people.
It's Garage, what Else?.......2001-03-17
Judging by the cover you might think these guys were lame fifties folkies, but they are secretly mediocre 60s rockers. For those unaware, this is the band that made `Louie Louie' a household name, but there's nothing that special here. It's enjoyable if you're into 60s garage bands. Recommended for fans of `Nuggets'.
