Beyond a shadow of a doubt Medicina de amor is Raulin's landmark album. He is my favorite bachata artist among many that I listen to. However, I always seems to pull out of one of his when I want to listen to bachata exclusively. Raulin who writes his own music is one of best representatives of modern bachata and definitely is unique in style. This album has the forever popular "Medicina de amor" but the beauty of this album does not stop there. All the songs are terrific and the lyrics really hit home. Maria Luisa and Que vuelva are also true examples of bachatas that are sung from the heart. With the surge of bachata music and bachateros like Raulin Rodriguez Dominican culture from a music perspective should get the recognition that it deserves. That is where bachata originated with a requinto or a guitar and bachata from anywhere else is a poor imitation. I hope you enjoy this cd and I encourage you try some of his others: Soledad, Corazon Corazon, Sin Fortuna, and Arrancame la vida just to mention some other wonderful albums in his collection.

Best of the Best.......2003-08-21

To have a CD with just one hit is very common. To buy a cd with two to three hits is very rare. But to come up with a cd like Medicina De Amor, where there are 7 to 8 hits is just legendary. This cd introduced me to the world of bachata, along with Juan Luis Guerra's early hits, and as well as Luis Vargas. Why bachata is so great? It's music that derives from the heart of the Dominican culture and with the simplicity of just a guitar and a voice that have the power to capture your heart. I hope you enjoy this CD.

All I can say is . . .I loved it from the first time I heard it. This album really allowed for him to gain the recgonition he deserved. He is one of the best bachateros out there. . .and if you thing this album is hot, you should see and hear him perform live. . .Lo Mejor de los Bachateros es Raulin!!! He is what a truly proud Dominicano should be PROUD!

An early revolution in latin hip hop........2005-11-04

This is the first musical work of the guy now known as johnny prez by then he uses to be call ezd, whom together mc nick started a flowless way of raping the mob. I sure recommend this album to everyone interested in knowing about the roots of nowdays latin hip-hop. I gave it four stars because the guys were not on the top of their shape for it, but almost no one starts doing anything right away at the top.

This is another great recording from Brotzmann, joined here by his Swedish mates in a sax/bass/drums free trio. MEDICINA is the fourth release from this group, following "Noise of Wings," "Flying Feathers," and "Live at Nefertiti's". Brotz does not suffer from a lack of documentation. Atavistic has over the last few years restored many of his great early recordings to disc, in cahoots with the German FMP label (see my EARLY BROTZ list). Whether old or new, there's very little that I've heard on disc by Brotzmann that was sub-par -- the only example that comes to mind was called NOTHUNG, a live sax/bass/drums trio with William Parker at the Knitting Factory that came out in 2002. One continuous performance, it just failed to sustain interest over an hour.

MEDICINA is organized in such a way as to avoid that problem, as it consists of 8 compositions (3 each by the drummer, Peeter Uuskyla, and the electric bassist, Peter Friis Nielsen, and 2 by Brotz), ranging from 6 to 15 minutes long. These compositions are frameworks for improvisation, of course, but the varying frameworks insure some variety of approach. This sounds like a sort of free jazz garage band, and I mean that in the best possible way. Uuskyla, in his liner notes, talks about the boredom of working a straight job, and using music to get in touch with your dreams and visions.

"There is not too much time to talk about it while you better play it, guts out, music as life security, as a daily spoonful of strong kicking medicine -- and you may be able to handle reality."

MEDICINA culminates with "Hard Times Blues," a Brotz piece, and it kicks that line from Uuskyla in unmistakable terms. This is raw, existential music, music that speaks from the gut, from the heart, music that refuses to go quietly, music that speaks of a determination to keep fighting, to keep loving, music of love and rage.
